A cool Mediterranean retreat from the city's chaos, with fabric-swathed ceilings and pristine white furnishings. Even on a hectic night, service is calm and competent, and the professional couples at most of the tables seem to be speaking in peaceful whispers. The kitchen offers scintillating versions of hearty, refreshing Greek favorites. Souvlaki is charcoal-grilled and up scaled with filet mignon to produce an impressively tender, succulent result. Wine-marinated octopus legs are also charcoal-grilled, resulting in astounding flavor and not a hint of rubberness. Classics like garlicky skordalia, fava beans, sauteed chicken livers over lentils, and spanakopita are all best-of-breed versions, the latter prepared as a platter of bite-sized pies. A sizeable portion of moussaka, consisting of layers of juicy ground lamb and eggplant, tied together by a superlative béchamel. For dessert, the array of delicate pastries and the deeply creamy rice pudding are excellent without exception.

    I was really looking forward to coming back here, first two times I really enjoyed it. Tonight the service and food was off the mark. We left after not being tended for quite some time before desert.

    Very charming spot. We went for restaurant week and ordered from the prix fix menu. The mezze plate was fantastic. Octopus was delicious, had a great marinade and so tender. The fish entree was branzino and prepared simply and delicious. Also have to rave about the almond cookies and walnut cake. I wasn’t prepared for dessert to be so good. We will be back!

    The wait staff was superb and the food was fresh and just what I needed. We had the sea bass with broccoli rabe, grilled octopus and Greek salad. The choices of desserts like the orange and walnut cake is mg go to.

    It was a spontaneous decision to have dinner in the city and we were in the mood for Greek. I came across Periyali on Google and I really liked the way everything looked from the photos. It was a quiet weekend in the city July 4th we had no problem getting a last minute reservation. Upon entering Periyali I was immediately impressed with the decor. This restaurant is very beautiful and romantic! Our server Mack made us feel so welcome and he was a pleasure to chat with regarding the 35 years Periyali has been in business. In regards to the food everything was really prime quality and perfectly seasoned. I had the lamb chops and they were outstanding. We had walnut ice cream with walnut cake for dessert and it was excellent! I would highly recommend Periyali for an above average dining experience across the board.

    This restaurant, that is now more than 35 years old continues to provide a civilized but casual dining experience. The staff are very interested in making sure that you're happy and the food is really delicious. My recent meal of lamb chops were fantastic, everything except the string been which were overcooked for me but might be fine for others. The fried squid with scordalia was perfection and it surprised me that this potato and garlic puree (scordalia) worked so well with the squid, as I have generally had it with vegetables, beets, grilled peppers, etc. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for dining with people you actually like and want to have a conversation with.

    Periyali consistently offers a gracious dining experience where the food is delicious, the service is on point and the ambiance is casual yet refined. Always greeted with a warm welcome, Periyali remains one of the few NYC restaurants worthy of destination. It’s on our “favorites “ list and for good reason.

    Everything was delicious! We shared the spanakopita which is always a treat. For mains my husband had the special scallops and I had the special Sea bass. Both dishes were fantastic! Great service, nice ambience. Wonderful!

    It was Orthodox Easter, but we arrived for an early dinner. It was really quiet (at first). The Easter choices were interesting but we chose from the regular menu. The price fixe ($49 with some potential extra charges) was a great deal. The appetizers (octobust, tomato salad and spanikopia) were just perfect as were the main courses. My guests shared a split of wine and thought it was delicious. Our service was just about faultless (sometimes a bit challenging to pay the bill to depart). I heartily recommend Periyali as it never disappoints...oh and the dessert (orange cake) was really yummy too!

    Food portions were decent but the food was very bland and had no taste. Simply put, it was tasteless. The fish (Branzino) was disappointing. Even the lemon potatoes were tasteless! Even the salad- something that you cannot go wrong with- came in a very small portion. Even that was tasteless too! There are several better Greek restaurants in Manhattan. I can name at least 3 much, much better Greek restaurants in NYC.

    Periyali is an exceptionally well managed, truly neighborhood gem! The food is authentic Greek, prepared expertly, with the freshest of ingredients. Service is implacable, and features largely the same familiar faces that we have come to know and like for many years. The restaurant is housed in a historically significant building, which has been well maintained, as a great Greek Taverna in Athens would! For I and my family, no trip to NY is complete, without lunch or dinner at Periyali.

    Excellent dinner here. Had a nice mix of aps - char grilled octopus highlight. Entrees were all excellent especially lamb shank (and I don’t normally order/like lamb - server convinced me to try it). Nice wine list with reasonable prices. Service was attentive, but not intrusive. Highly recommend.

    The service was incredible. The staff was attentive and friendly. The restaurant is cute, maybe a little too bright, but the food was a little disappointing. I ordered the filet mignon. It came out as a kabob, and I’m not sure what I got was a filet. It was tough and felt like a cheaper cut of meat. Everyone else got the leg of lamb and they seemed to enjoy it. Normally, I wouldn’t gripe, but the check was $400, quite steep for an average meal.

    Went in for Restaurant Week. I would go back for the appetizers alone - grilled octopus and dips with warm pita bread. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Eleni, our server, was friendly and provided us with great and honest suggestions. Husband loved his branzino entree. My chicken was tender with the flavorful couscous with lots of veggies. Sweet ending with baklava and walnut cake (a little too much clove for me). Thanks for making our night wonderful.

    Great Chelsea based Greek Taverna style restaurant that has been there nearly 40 years! Dimitri, the manager was very accommodating and service excellent. Prix Fixe (for Restaurant week) was a deal too. Excellent evening.

    The Restaurant Week menu is excellent. There were four of us and despite it being a busy night, we were not rushed. Everyone ordered something different and we each were happy with our choices. This restaurant has been serving New Yorkers for 37 years I believe; a venerable establishment.
