Fusion / Eclectic
We know the word "fusion" has been wielded about to justify everything from Hula Burgers to Mexican lasagna. But the East-meets-South brand of fusion happening at Poor Calvin's? It's creative; it's innovative; and it's probably unlike anything you've tasted in the ATL. After working in kitchens around the world, Calvin Phan wanted to shake things up a little. And so, into the mac 'n cheese, the Thai spices went. Now, Calvin's giving Southern staples, like sea bass and fried chicken, a decidedly creative Asian-inspired twist (and a nip of spice, too). We didn't think good old-fashioned mac 'n cheese could get much better. And then, we tried Calvin's ridiculously rich take on the cheesy classic, gussied up with chunks of lobster and given a zing with Thai spices. This, and more innovative dishes, approached in much the same way, leave the hands of Calvin Phan day in and day out. His dedication and attention to detail are evident in each dish and dessert. You won't be disappointed.

Don't be deterred by the name of a supposed Chinese restaurant. We didn't order any traditional Chinese dishes, because the menu offered so many more interesting choices. Food and service did not disappoint.

The fried chicken was great and my coworker had the lobster dish and it was so good. I would recommend this to anyone. Make sure you get reservations as it is very crowded.

Poor Calvin's is always consistently awesome! I have had most of the entrees on the menu. This time I had the seafood omelet. My friends had the lobster fried rice, crab grilled cheese, and the pineapple rice/veggies. We also had the crab fries and the seafood eggrolls. Everything was wonderful. The sangrias are tasty and potent! Great waitress.

It's been a long time since I can say everything was perfect at a restaurant. We were greeted enthusiastically, seated on time, the craft cocktails are fantastic and the bartenders are quite entertaining. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The service was amazing and the food was heavenly. Can't wait to go back.

Wonderful experience and excellent meal. Was looking for a restaurant near the Fox Theater. Poor Calvin's is .4 miles and an easy walk to/from the theater. My wife, daughter, and I dined at the restaurant. Each of our meals was delicious, lobster fried rice, lamb chops, and crispy beef. Our waitress, Sylvia, was phenomenal. She knew the menu in and out and was extremely helpful in answering questions. Level of service provided by her was absolutely top notch. We will definitely be back as there were a number of dishes we want to try!

I bring all my out-of-town guests here. Never disappoints. Consistently good service and great food both when it's packed and when we beat the rush. Personally grateful for delicious gluten-free plates. Those dishes make me feel like I'm not missing anything.

The space can be a little tight but the staff are very mindful of that.

Can't ever go wrong with the scallop/shrimp curry or fried red snapper or crispy beef. The gluten free fried chicken is bomb.

I don't usually give all perfect scores, but I had no choice. The food, the service, was superb. As a pescatarian it was numerous choices I could choose from.

Food was different but very very good. We had lobster macaroni and cheese and a meat loaf to share. Everything including the service was great. Will eat again!

A favorite of ours. Little known best restaurant in Atlanta, though getting much more known now. Definitely need a reservation. An eclectic blend of Asian and American dishes with top notch service, amazing one of a kind drinks and really cool atmosphere. Love Poor Calvin’s

My favorite in Atlanta. Food is always awesome, I asked for a quiet table and we were put in the back room next to a window-perfect. Our fish was loaded with bones, but the kitchen made it right. Cocktails always delish!

Waitress was amazingly knowledgeable, service was on point as well. Calvin is doing his thang in this joint!! It was our first time and I had Fried chicken, it was cooked perfectly, They do a wonderful job with deserts too. Try the pound cake👊🏿. Almost forgot the big thing. The drinks are the best I’ve had to date in Atlanta or anywhere else.

A friend and I went to Poor Calvin’s after attending a downtown theatre performance. This was my second visit to Poor Calvin’s. Once again, I was impressed by the service and food. I had the crab risotto. Wonderful! My friend had the seafood curry, which I had on my previous visit. She thoroughly enjoyed it. Then there was the marvelous dessert: peach empanadas. So good!!! Can’t wait to go back to Poor Calvin’s!

The food here is consistently good, portions are abundant and the fusion dishes are undeniably unique. However, I’m lost on the service. It’s hit or miss. I’m at the restaurant because I enjoy all the mentioned things, but if my experience with the restaurant service doesn’t reflect the same level of care and attention that my meal was made with, I take issue with that. I’ve had fantastic servers here and a meh one. I think that this restaurant has been burned by some of its patrons (late arrivals, returning food items, etc) and it’s starting to show up as a poor experience for many for Poor Calvin’s. Not sure I’ll continue coming here. Too many service and food oriented restaurants in Atlanta for club-type customer service.

I loved the lobster fried rice and the baked kale chips that accompanies this dish. The only problem which I understand completely is the size of the place and the close proximity of each table. It is a very small space and the tables are closely situated next to one another so I had the unpleasant experience of hearing the next table's conversation that was laced with profanity and ignorance. Other than that the food and service was great.
