Contemporary Asian

R&D is an urban casual restaurant in the heart of Toronto’s iconic Chinatown, headed by first-ever MasterChef Canada winner Eric Chong and his mentor, Michelin-starred restaurant owner Alvin Leung. The stylish interior reflects R&D's dualistic nature: open & abuzz with energy while preserving an intimate atmosphere.

At R&D, eastern dishes meet western style in the form of modern Chinese sharing plates, where classic ingredients are given a vanguard treatment.

I was expecting more from this restaurant - maybe that was my mistake. I was expecting the service to be more curated and professional and that dining would be more of an experience. It was a special occasion and we said we weren't in a rush. The cocktails were great. We ordered a number of smaller plates and pre-ordered a peking duck. The small plates just started arriving one after the other so that we had so many all at once like we were actually at dim sum. The duck was good, the bao served with it instead of traditional pancakes was good, but not enough provided and the cucumber plate was tiny and inadequate. No one ever tried to serve us more drinks. I thought some of the small dim sum items and medium plates were good. I would come for drinks and a few small plates but no more.

Well presented dishes. Persimmon bavarois with candied orange and merengue was fun and interesting. Beef noodles were presented as a tower: straight up comfort food.

The food was amazing. Price is good the taste. Service is ok. I told the waiter to add an extra bao for to go instead the order came all 3 together. Server said he is going to make sure another one will be ready for to go but then they didn’t give & I didn’t ask for it. But the food was so good. Specially wagoo beef was so good.

One of our favorite restaurants in Toronto. The duck is to die for. Best siu mai we've ever had. We like to sit at the Chef's bar and watch the action. 10/10 for sure.

One of the top 5 dining experiences I’ve ever had. I’ll be dreaming about the food for years! The black cod with pesto and shrimp butter was heavenly-awesome, rich flavors that were unique and did not overpower the fish. The French onion spring rolls had a deep flavor offset by the yummy cheese. For dessert I had the persimmons 3 ways- blew my mind! For me the only drawback was the bad hip hop music that to me didn’t seem to fit a dining atmosphere, but that being said it had a cool vibe. Excellent service, great drinks too. A must go!

The place in general is a great place to dine with a date or friends. I have gone there multiple times and the quality of certain items seems to be decreasing especially when it comes to staples like the fried chicken. The original was perfect and don’t know why they keep addijg different flavours to it. The RD Fried Rice is amazing and will keep coming back just for that.

Flavorful food - i like the R&D fried rice; the onion soup spring rolls are good but taste more like cheese sticks - i couldn’t taste any onion 😅. Very nice cocktails. Friendly staff. You can also interact a bit with the chefs/kitchen staff, which was really fun. I sat at the counter near the kitchen so it was a bit smokey and at the end of the night, i smelled like smoke/wok hay 🙈 I should have known that.

Came here for the Valentine's Day menu, was super excited and looking forward to the experience. The food was abysmal. Other than the appetizer, everything else didn't taste good or look good - it was just not really a coherent menu for Valentine's day (raw tuna/beef, followed by dimsum, along with a really sweet bun, and then risotto, and then custard bun....). We were rushed as well. The whole experience didn't feel very special .. it feels like they really didn't put much effort into the Valentine's Day menu. Drinks were good. Overall very disappointed given it's our first time there and it felt like we should've just have gotten their regular menu. The whole thing came to $380 after tips, which was honestly outrageous for the quality of food that was served. We understand it's just a one day event, but if you have a Bib Gourmand, you should be upholding a level of dining experience for any day, especially for special occasions. (We were literally so disappointed we had to go elsewhere the next day to make up for it...)

My group of 3 friends visited R&D for the dinner winterlicious menu. It's been a few years since I've visited R&D and thought the winterlicious menu was a good way to introduce my friends who have never been before. Right off the bat, our server was incredibly rude. He rolled his eyes at every question we asked him and was very short tempered, as if we were wasting his time by ordering. The appetizers came quickly which was nice, but then the entrees came out shortly after while we were still working on the appetizer so there was a bit of crowding of plates at the table. After the dessert came, the server came by and without a word slapped the bill on the table without us asking for it, while we were in the middle of dessert. We weren't ready to leave, and actually wanted to order some coffee but he never came back and we continued chatting. When he did come back, he brought the machine and slid it in front of me, all without saying saying anything (no, how was the dessert, can I get you anything else - nothing). We wanted the bill to be split and he seemed annoyed at that because he needed to reprint the bills - but if he had asked us in the first place we could have avoided this! Overall, the experience was rushed and the server seemed like he wanted us out. Even when leaving, he pushed past us at the door without so much a "thanks for coming" or "enjoy your evening". Outside of the poor service, the winterlicious food items were just average. The regular menu at R&D is much better. Would give this experience 1 star.

We enjoyed the food. We ordered the pekin duck and additional plates. The food was good but somewhat pricey. What dampened our experience was the service. Must have had my head cranked around trying to get the attention of our server for half the 2 hour meal. They were not attentive to our table. A 15% tip was generous in this case as opposed to the 25% pre programmed option. I wouldn’t go back. For the spend, the experience just wasn’t worth it.

This review is for their Winterlicious 2024 menu. Every bite was overseasoned and unpleasant. Despite the hype and recognition that R&D has acquired (and it showed with a full house at my time of dining), the flavours presented during this Winterlicious event completely missed the mark. They even broke the golden rule of Asian desserts: don't make it too sweet.

Such a wonderful Winterlicious experience. Having a seat at the Chef’s Rail was such a treat. The wait staff were attentive, the courses were served by the chefs with a quick explanation of the dish, and the flavours were nostalgic with a mix of something new. I had the Po-Boy, the duck fried rice and tea-misu with a lychee cocktail. I loved all the appetizer and the main, the desert was a tad sweet for my taste but I generally don’t like things too sweet, so no fault of the chef. Would love to come back for their regular menu!

We went for the Winterlicious menu. Firstly, the food itself vs the pictures online did not match up. Secondly, the fried food had a little too much MSG where you could feel an uncomfortable after taste in your mouth. And the duck fried rice although had good flavour, tasted like it was reheated. Finally, the tea-ramisu (matcha flavoured) had this fluorescent green that looked a little concerning and lacked matcha flavour. I get that it’s a set menu but the food lacked a wow factor. The flavours were great overall, and we loved the vibe of the restaurant but some of the food missed.

We visited for Winterlicious 2024. This was my first time visiting the venue. I ordered the papaya salad as a starter and it was wonderful. The mix of green papaya, peanuts and the seasoning was absolutely delicious and opened up my appetite. It was slightly sweet, tangy, and spicy. My main was the eggplant terrine and I was extremely happy with the decision. Sprinkled with parmesan and I think Nori, my date said it was better than the long salmon option. The ragu was a punch of flavour from the start. The eggplant was thinly sliced and crispy on the edges. It was a delight to enjoy and just the right size, as I feel a larger portion would become too heavy. For dessert, the tea-ramisu was impeccably light and a fine choice to end the meal. In terms of service, our server Ray was extremely attentive and we were well looked after. I appreciate his attention to our experience and the night was definitely one to remember as I had such a wonderful night.

The Asian twist can be overwhelming. You can fined spicy kick in most appetizers, but a sip of water will wipe it all out. Colors and textures can be joyful, so plenty to look forward to :) I had shared Eggplant Terrine with the table. We all loved it! Lasagne twist to the vegan dish is super comfortable; a great choice for Asian fellows to another white food. Hoping to see it become regular menu of R&D. If you do see this review, thank you so much chefs of R&D. The food is inspiring.

A bit loud and the seating in the back is a bit close to other tables. Decor a bit all over the place. Love the walk by open concept kitchen. Servers were friendly and quick. I tried the passion fruit mojito. It tasted like a sour ball in my mouth. Way too sour for my taste. Food was very good. Lamb spiducci was very tender with a bit of a kick. Calamari in the po boy was crispy and delicious. Feel like it was missing something to liven it up though like a spritz of lemon. Baos were a bit spongey. I've had better elsewhere. Duck fried rice was the star. Love the sweet tanginess from what I believe was the oyster sauce in the duck. The rice was salty to counter it. I expected the fried chicken to be crispier but I loved the taste. It also had a bit of a kick to it. I like how the rice in this dish seemed a bit more subdued to go with the loud flavors in the chicken. The mousse itself was delicious. Not too decadent. I like how it had more of a cakey texture than a standard chocolate mousse. It had an interesting texture. I did not like the orange sabayon though. It was a bit sour and distracting for my taste. Overall I liked the experience and I got to see Master Chef Eric Chong in action and chatting with the guests. Very cool. Excited to come back and try different dishes.
