R&D Restaurant - Toronto
At R&D, eastern dishes meet western style in the form of modern Chinese sharing plates, where classic ingredients are given a vanguard treatment. The eclectic menu features bite-sized dishes like Grandpa's Fun Guo and CSB (char siu bao), and sharing plates like the Best Duck in the City and Braised Sichuan Lamb Shank. An innovative and vibrant selection of cocktails complement the bold and playful fare.
The peking duc was literally the best duck in town! Amazing meal and highly recommended.
Love everything about R & D! The service, ambiance, music and of course the delicious food! Such a happening place and yet can be so kid friendly too. My girls and I loved our time there and will definitely be returning soon!
I booked this place for my husband's birthday, and we will never go there again!
The host leaded us to our table while the server Micheal is serving other table, we didn't know why but the host looked scared to go up, so we waited with him till Micheal completely left the section. But later we know why, because the server is a BULLY.
We sat down and I went to washroom. Micheal came around and offered us water, he poured water for my husband. My husband was on his phone didn't notice the water bottle, so he asked if we can get some water in my glass too, Micheal stopped. Then my husband noticed the water bottle, he apologized he didn't see the water bottle earlier, we can do it ourselves. Then Micheal came back poured water for my glass and he STARED at my husband the entire time. My husband apologized again and Micheal said nothing but just stared at him.
Later Micheal brought us two cute bowls, left them on the table heavily, I didn't know anything but a little confused. Then my husband smiled and nodded at him trying to get an order, he ignored us a few times, and finally came over. During order, he said nothing just confirmed order in the end. It was weird for me not getting feedback after I ordered two dishes, so I talked to my husband that's quite a different serving style. So my husband started telling me he might have offended Micheal earlier, my husband thought by asking him to pour the water made Micheal felt being bused around.
During the entire dinner, Micheal introduced dishes to other tables pleasantly but said nothing to us, not even ask how is everything. I understand he might felt uncomfortable at first, but we apologized twice, and the way he served us made us felt being bullied.
We said nothing because it's birthday but it ruined our experience with the great food and the birthday. Our appointment was at 8:30pm, we left at 9:15pm.
I understand the place is in Chinatown, but this kind of service? We can get it anywhere else but half priced.
It’s true that they have best roast duck in town :-)
So good to see them change their appetizer menu to includes some seafood appetizers. We have been here for more than 10 times and every time is amazing.
We would ask if possible to bring back the pancakes, we found it goes better with the duck than the bun.
Wonderful dining experience
Came on a Sunday evening and one waiter for several tables meant we waited for some time to order drinks, appies and mains. We had to prompt the waiter each time we needed something
fried rice tasted bitter. The meat on top of the rice was fat and hard to bite through.
The Canadian-Chinese fusion taste was surprising good. Our server was very professional and kind. He gave some excellent recommendation for the menu. I would definitely go again!
Delicious meal! We had very high expectations coming to this restaurant and it definitely did not disappoint! The @wok_lobster is to die for!! Service was amazing too!
The food was overpriced and was rushed. The chefs presented food items that were either incomplete or rushed.
We ordered the Chicken Fried rice, but it tasted like butane and had a gas odor to it. The rice was black and burnt, and when we told the barkeep, he informed us that the kitchen was closing.
The servers were dealing with a large group at the bar, but their delays were unacceptable and when we wanted to speak to someone about it there was no response from the floor manager.
At that point we just wanted to pay and get out. The food was overpriced and no one cared to address the issue. I spent more time apologizing to my business client for the choice of Resturant then I did speaking about the business.
The food is amazing!!! What a great place, we’ll definitely be back! Especially btw 5-7 pm to take advantage of the great deal on special cocktails!
Excellent food! Wonderful staff and cozy atmosphere
great food, cool atmosphere and delicious cocktails. Can’t wait to come back! Will def be pre-ordering the Duck!
Food was really good for the price and I was absolutely in love the ambiance.
It is a great place to have a first date or any anniversaries for couples.
Overall ok dining experience. There are some hits and misses on the menu. Their CBS, popcorn shrimp and beef spring rolls are delicious, the tuna tartar and lamb shank not so much - no flavor at all had to douse the broth with hot sauce and the foie mousse was too many flavors packed in a glass didn't enjoy it. Cocktails were pretty delicious and service was great!
The service was slow - tho this was no fault of the server. He had too many tables to wait on. The food was very bad.
It was awesome!
I was not impressed at all by the food. We ordered a bibimbap and the chicken was completely burned (like black charcoal) and we had to return it. Also, we wanted to try the duck but it was not available (we where there on Saturday at 6:30pm) and it turns out you need to reserve the duck 12 hours in advance, but that info is not communicated anywhere and we did our reservation more than 24 hr in advance, so we could have asked for it. I will l not be going back!
Food, special cocktails and wine list were excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed those, and will definitely go back.
Our waiter was not pleasant, warm, or friendly - though fairly knowledgeable about the menu and alcohol selections. He initially told us once seated at 6:30pm, there was another booking and we needed to be out at 8:30pm. We were a party of 6 and 3 of our group were running late. He reminded us 3 times of this situation, even though he also added that the bookings might change, and he could reseat them elsewhere. As time went by, and our full group arrived, and we ordered etc., our waiter seemed to become happier. The "urgency" to eat and leave, seemed to vanish, and there was no further communication from him on this topic. Hmmmmmmm?!
Service is a critical part of a restaurant's experience. Our waiter and the leadership of R & D need to pay more attention to this, regardless of whether this was a one-off. We spent 500$ that evening, and we have lots of choices where we eat and spend our dining dollars.
The pig on the main course of the winter menu was a bit dry.
Winterlicious salmon was under cooked and apple tart was extremely salty
It was good.
Me and my boyfriend went there for the first time and we had their Winterlicious menu plus Madai sashimi..
The service was good, our server was really friendly, and see he didn't come to over table and ask how the food is or if everything is okay! I LOVE IT! I hate it when the server keeps coming to the table and asking how the food is, and sometime even before we have the chance to taste it.. If we have an issue with the food we will definitely call you over for that.. So that was a plus for me.
In terms of the food quality, overall it was good. I can understand that the quality of the Winterlicious is just so-so since they are mass-produced.. For entree I ordered the Japchae, and it was mushy... However, I felt like the Madai sashimi was a bit too ginger-y... The spice from the ginger overpowered the freshness from the fish.. I was a bit disappointed on that..
Overall I liked this experience, and I would probably come back for their regular menu.. Plus, I would love to have a picture taken with the head chef Eric!! He was too busy tonight ☹️
Went for winterlicious. Good food, great service, best value. Highly recommend!
Went on a double date here for Winterlicious. The food was delicious, quantity is less but the quality is great and it gave you an opportunity to enjoy all three courses. Definitely would recommend to anyone looking for a tasting experience from a famous chef.
It is generally good except for the service is average. Food is exceptional.
Went for Winterlicious and the 3-course dinner was only $33...such amazing value. It was so awesome to see such young chefs cooking amazing, delicious, non-pretentious food. The Korean stew and nasi goreng bibimbap were my favourite...perfect amount of flavour and spice. We sat at the counter so we had front row seats to the kitchen, and the chefs even served us the food. We saw them prepare a Peking duck and it looked so delicious that we plan on going back for it.
One of my absolute favourite restaurants in the city. Really respect how great their offerings are for winterlicious - they put just as much into it despite the prix fixe aspect (which not all restaurants are willing to do). The bao is amazing, the drinks are amazing, the pork is amazing. I have never been anything other than very full and highly impressed after a dinner at R&D.
Food was excellent - we went for the winterlicious special. The suckling pig was a misnomer as it was pork belly and basically fat. They took it back and replaced it with the salmon belly. The food was just short of spectacular particularly given the price point.
Service was too fast. We ordered 10 different dishes to share and they brought everything immediately. We were done the whole meal in 30 minutes end to end. Not much of an experience.
Food is surprisingly not good.
It was great to see Eric Chong being very involved in the kitchen. His leadership in the kitchen (with his relatively young brigade) is needed. Keep it up Eric!
Everything we tried was spectacular! We had the torched Salmon belly, grandpa’s dim sum, lobster, bok choy, lettuce cups and an incredible handheld pie for dessert. We’ll be back!
Mediocre in nearly every way. The two things that stood out were the pork stew starter and the old fashioned that I ordered; both were outstanding. My main, suckling pig, was well prepared but completely lacking in flavour. The barley risotto that accompanied it was delicious. For dessert I had chai pannacotta and it was beyond disgusting. It was unbelievably bitter and tasted like an old, over extracted chai teabag. I genuinely cannot believe someone would serve something so terrible, it's like they tried to make it taste as bad as possible. I'm on the fence about whether I would go back but the starter was so good I would consider it.
R&D is a great spot for unique and high quality Asian food. Good value, and portions and good. Their Lucky 7 cocktails are super unique and taste amazing. The decor and ambiance is very young/modern, however the tables were a bit too close together for my liking. Would recommend.
Very good meal for winterlicious! Suckling pork with barley risotto was amazing!
I’ve been here a bunch of times and their Winterlicious menu wasn’t as delicious or adventurous as the ones on their regular menu. Food is great if you love fusion.
Absolutely floored with the quality of food and presentation. Went above and beyond my expectations of what a Master Chef Restaurant should be! Definitely a Hidden Gem that seems to be going under the radar and needs more notoriety. I will be back and I'm happily spreading the word!
