Honouring the history of our coastal locale, our restaurant was named after the year Tofino got its name. With a fresh take on local ingredients, our shared plates are devised by up-and-coming chef with an impressive pedigree, Paul Moran. Unwind off the water with wood-fired bites or a libation inspired by the tides.

I came from an outstanding experience at a very well known/established restaurant that shall remain nameless - to the 1909 Kitchen - and to be very frank - i was blown away at how GOOD the FOOD was at 1909. It was a themed night experience, and every dish we tried was better than anything the other restaurant could produce. The level of service was very prompt and courteous at 1909 with all my requests being addressed in a friendly manner. I found the room to be hot - too hot, but as it cleared out - the temperature became more bearable. (This was not the fault of the staff as they tried to accommodate the best they could) We ate tapas style and the Taco's were outstanding as was the cerviche and tortillas. The Dessert(s) were very yummy (Tiramisu and S mores) and I'd go back there again anytime.

Our 3 day trip to Tofino from the Sunshine Coast to celebrate my birthday was 'open' in terms of dining. Once we arrived it was a typical west coast winter day ... cold, raining and lots of recent snow around so for the first nights dinner we only ventured next door to our accommodation .. it was a very enjoyable dinner but to be honest like many we have had as we do dine out often. Next day my wife suggest I google 'fine dining' in Tofino and whilst the usual 'paid ads' popped up one stood out to me advising about 1909 Kitchen which had a chef who had recently won an award for best new young chef .. so that appealed to me and we made the reservation. I have to say now that this chef is NOT a great 'new young' chef ... he is a GREAT CHEF .... and deserves to be rated up there with the 'best of the best' in Canada. We are 'grazers' and like slow dining and sharing dishes ... we where truly BLOWN AWAY with this whole experience ... an emphasis on all fresh local food. Starting with oysters ( 6 ) and then 'doubling' up as they where SOOOO good .... then a great green salad ... then what has to be one of THE BEST EVER meals we have had .. cod to DIE FOR ... all of this complimented with a great bottle of Foxtrot Chardonnay ... has to be one of BC's finest. So Tofino is not an easy place to get to ... however for those who make the effort you should NOT make the effort and without experiencing 1909 Kitchen.

We really enjoyed the sharing experience and the food was wonderful. We are a family of four and there was something for everyone! Would have liked a little less "toppings" so we could really taste the main ingredient (brussel sprouts, scallops and apple salad) but other than that was excellent.

The service was friendly and fast. The food was good, but the amounts were extremely small. I had Black Cod and it was about a three inch square piece by 1 inch thick. It was cooked perfectly and flavourful, but only about four bites in size. On the plate with the fish were four 1 inch square pieces of fried tofu with 7 or 8 pieces of watercress on top and a teaspoon of some kind of sauce. It was delicious, but again only two bites worth of food. When the meal is in the $30.00 range you expect a little more food. We won’t go back.

My husband and I enjoyed an amazing meal that our tastebuds are still dancing from, the choices in spices and presentation gave you excitement and anticipation for your next bite. Our server was alert and delightful to converse with along with the rest of the staff.
Thank you for a wonderful night!

Had a lovely Christmas Eve dinner with family. Our server was exceptional. The roasted squash soup was delicious as was the black cod, wood-oven pizza, and all the other items we had. The ambiance was perfect for that magical, cozy Christmas feel. Loved it.

Limited menu. Only 2 choices of seafood. It’s Tofino for God’s sake. COD was tasteless with a very small portion.

Overall, quite disappointing. In an empty restaurant, as a couple, we were seated next to a large and rowdy group (no slag on them - they were having a great time but the restaurant was empty so why not seat us away from the group?). The food was well cooked but under seasoned. Server knew nothing of the menu and was unable to answer most questions and those she did answer, she answered incorrectly. Our bottle of wine was spilled all over the table and chair and never wiped or cleaned up by the server. Desert, a skillet cookie, was a small cold and stale cookie, plopped into a hot skillet - not what we anticipated. For what it was, it was very expensive so generally poor value. We went based on this restaurant being short listed for En Route’s best new restaurants and were sadly disappointed and would not return.

We also went to Shelter and Wolf in the Fog the same weekend in Tofino and were thrilled with both experiences and would highly recommend both of those establishments for exceptional food, well crafted cocktails, beautiful service, and lovely spaces.

The "dinner" that I got was just an appetizer. Tiny piece of cod and some fondu. There was only one person ahead of us and we still had to wait over 45 minutes for our meal. We were told a 20 minute wait.
We hated the RAP music.

NOT impressed. Will not be back.

Our table was perfect and the food was good once we got it, but the service was so slow (we were the first and only people there for at least 15 minutes) and our food took so long that unfortunately the good food was not enough to compensate and we would not go back.

We were greeted by Oliver, a friendly informative host. Much to our dismay we were shunted off to a waitress who appeared to care less about the guests and service. We had to track her down for everything we needed. The bus person actually cleared our table because she thought we were finished—we had no food or drink. We had been ordering food each time we finished a couple of sharing plates. My son and his partner’s wine was finished as well. We wanted to try another plate and a dessert to share. While the food was so delicious we are not sure we want to attempt another disappointing evening. As the evening progressed my son became more and more upset because this was supposed to be a special time and the event was ruined.

Everything about 1909 Kitchen was outstanding, from booking through to arrival and dining experience.
The extensive wine list provided a lot of choice and all of the food options were absolutely outstanding. I adored the watermelon and feta as well as the broccoli dish.

2/5 dishes were very good, two were okay and one (pea shoots) had an unpleasant tasting creamy sauce. We would have sent it back if someone had come by or we could flag someone over. There were only two servers who easily became overwhelmed with a full room and little control on how plates became available from the kitchen. A youngish fellow (manager or supervisor?) did attempt to assist and became more of a problem, saying something offensive to our server, dropping swings for a table change and making things worse. Recommend you loose him, add a third server and support them properly. They have the right skills and personality for your business.

This was a very cool eatery. The watermelon and feta salad was outstanding and the pork meatballs not far behind. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that our pizza arrived cold. They very kindly rectified the situation though. It was great but not too fussy.

Wow! This place is amazing! We loved all of our food selections but stand outs were the cauliflower, the broccoli, and the smoked salmon pizza. We enjoyed sharing dishes and getting to try so many items on the menu. The service was some of the best I’ve ever experienced, friendly and attentive without being annoying or hovering.

Halibut overbooked
Poor service Server never inquired about our meal
It took far too long to clear our dishes and only after being reminded; same long delay for bill
Our complaint about service and over cooked halibut was received flippantly
We observed that many diners were kept waiting too long for heir meals. We also met a very unhappy couple that actually left after waiting too long for their main course
