Paying homage to Oakland history-about 100 years ago there was a lounge and club called the VARSITY LOUNGE located in our same location, who knew! In digging up old Oakland memorabilia, we found an old menu. To our surprise-they were well known for two things the Varsity Martini and Conga Lines!! While we aren’t ready for a conga, we are ready for the Varsity Martini, and to celebrate it’s only $5. Come join us in our downstairs café Monday through Friday after 2 o’ clock for $5 martinis and other drink specials.

Steak was rare not medium rare, schnitzel was super greasy with way to much butter on it, chicken was dry and over cooked. Combination of flavors made no sense … octopus was gamy with terrible combination of ingredients that made no sense and didn’t belong together. Overall these folks try but they just don’t know how to cook.

Perfect place to meet friends to catch up! Well located for BART friends and easy parking. Not too crowded, so it was easy to get a table and to hear each other. We sat for two hours and enjoyed the meal and space.

Not bad for Oakland and being next to a Bart station, great for happy hour. Staff is responsive, but not very friendly. I get it, it's just a job. It sucks, but helps pay my bills. Food is meh, artichoke was tough (if we have to peel it, why is it drenched in oil?), the pizza had potential but the crust was so salty it was unedible. Fries and octopus were good though. Decor and ambience were good though, I'd go back if they still let me in after writing this review.

The food was delicious and original, as reviewed by others. What made our visit special in addition to the food was the service. Our own servers were unobtrusive, but seemed to anticipate our needs, changing plates, filling water glasses, etc, before we observed the need ourselves. Even more impressive, as we sat in a place where we could observe the staff coming and going from the kitchen, we noticed courtesy and enjoyment among themselves, a helping hand, a smile, in all a sense that the staff members like each other and work together helpfully. A treat.

The food was mediocre. Absolutely no flavor to their Schnitzel and the server said it was German style, but definitely wasn't. It was just an overly doughed and fried pork medallion. It was massive in size, but had no flavor or sauce. And what was called polenta with the steak was not polenta, but had to be mixed with something else. I asked what it was because it was pumpkin orange and tasted like sweet potatoes, but the server kept saying it was just sweet corn polenta. It was a very strange flavor that didn't go well with the steak. Also, the top end good wines were way over priced. In some cases, 4 times retail. They had a zinfandel for $280 that we could get for $70 retail. Everything felt like it was not worth the money.

Acre is a great place for a date night. The service and food is outstanding. The staff makes you feel as if your the only person there. The food is excellent. I had the grilled octopus and fired Castelvetrano olives to start followed by the the Pacific Crest Rabbit A La Moutadre (saffron, jus, squash and rigatoni) it was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. I'm not a dessert person but I the Chocolate Demise with coffee was the perfect ending to a long week. And try the Black Manhattan you won't be disappoint.

I have been supporting this restaurant since the day after it opened. I love the servers, the greeters, and the ambiance. Now...I am getting tired of the menu! It would be nice if there would be some additions to celebrate the season. I LOVED it when the fava beans were in season, and they had them on the menu. Last night, everything was good...but I couldn't find anything new to try. Hence my 4-star review. Fingers crossed the menu will have expanded on my next visit.

Our first time at Acre and we had a terrific experience. Had a drink downstairs first, it is such a great indoor/ outdoor neighborhood vibe, people watching, great energy. Lovely service, try the fried olives! Dinner upstairs in the VERY pretty dining room. Modern and clean but not cold. Our server was just great - struck the perfect balance. We ordered a number of things to share and were so happy. Cavatelli pasta may be the best thing I’ve ever eaten!! We had no room for dessert - so ordered two! Strauss Creamery vanilla with olive oil and sea salt and stone fruit galette. Wow to both. Can’t wait to go back!

This was our second time dining at Acre. We had another wonderful dining experience. We sat in the bar and had a drink while we waited for our friends to join us. We were welcomed by the bar staff. When our friends showed up we were seated and welcomed by our server, a very personable young man. All of our food choices were delicious, and the presentation was impeccable! We never felt rushed. We so enjoyed our meal and our time with good friends. Parking was very accessible.

I had the Nicoise salad, which was delicious. The front of the house needs work. Indoor seating was cramped and LOUD. Outdoor seating has no ambiance and the corner we were in was covered with cobwebs. Our waitress was pleasant, but not particularly attentive.

Menu has not improved much since the beginning. Corn chowder was good, as was a pasta dish. The rest was not memorable. I told the waiter, the hostess downstairs, and wrote ahead of time. 2 birthdays. Only 1 candle came with two desserts.

Had dinner for the first time to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Restaurant was crowded on a Monday night, and thus loud. The staff seemed overwhelmed by the crowd. Twice a waiter (not our assigned waiter) brought us dishes we did not order. The burrata appetizer was tasty but the cheese was chilled instead of warm. More surprising was that both of our main dishes were at best lukewarm from the second they hit our table. The rigatoni apparently had been plated after sitting around cooling off. Similarly, the mushroom chickpea main course was barely warm. I told our waiter the pasta was cold and he offered to give us another one, but by then we had already eaten it (the portions are modest). Since all the dishes were small, we ordered a side of cauliflower. Even that was room temperature. Acre did take off $11 for our ice cream as compensation. I won't be eager to come back, however, given that I expect more when I spend over $50 per person for dinner (not including drinks).

What a wonderful redo of Olivetto! Great beverages, beautiful interior, friendly and attentive service, but the food is simply incredible. Garlic shrimp! Fried olives! Pizza! Lamb ragu! The only disappointment was that my stomach wasn’t big enough for more! Looking forward to our next visit!
