Alex H
Alex already had restaurant experience from some of Montreal’s greatest, such as, the Royal Embassy, Mother Martin, Grand Motor hotel, Elmridge country club, and the Ritz Carlton to name a few. Alex had decided he would want to offer the same fine dining experience at a more affordable rate.
Established in 1990, the original Alex H (on Monkland street) was family run for 10 years, until 2000, when it moved to Sherbrooke street where it is still found today.
Today a family trio runs the kitchen, Alex, his daughter Maria, and his son Edward. Every night they cook your meals with pride we hope you’ll take the chance to experience the pride and care that goes into making every dish at Alex H. Please BYO Liquor.
Menu prices have gone very high for a neighborhood restaurant that used to include a salad or soup with the main enteee and no longer does. A pity since they have overpriced themselves and we will not return, as will our friends.
exterior door let in very cold air. left resto as soon as we could
It was an extremely cold night and each time the front door opened the entire interior was freezing. This happened the entire meal. Other than that everything was amazing.
Great neighbourhood restaurant! BYOW and reasonably priced. Not a huge menu but there’s something for everyone. Professional but accessible wait staff and charming atmosphere. Will definitely return!
AS usual, we had a great dinner at Alex H. Great food, great price, great service. My only complaint is that at times it can be noisy
Find the new menu pricy, don’t know if I’ll return.
Birthday for a friend
We enjoyed our dining experience very much. The food was delicious and the ambiance relaxing. The staff was very attentive and did their utmost to make our evening a pleasant one.
The service is too slow. Servers are efficient and courteous but they require more help.
We all enjoyed our meal - the individual who had the liver thought it was excellent
THis long standing restaurant has a very nice menu, but the service is very slow. It was half full and the one server or the kitchen could not keep up to the demand.
Always good food with friendly service - and one can bring one's own wine.
very good, calm and cozy, not too crowded, we can talk there :)
Excellent meal and service. It was very winter’s cold day outside (minus 20 C) and the restaurant dining area was on the cool side. Otherwise, a superb experience.
Lovely waiter and very good food in a relaxed mid-week atmosphere. We will definitely return!
A great local restaurant, with tasty food, and great service from friendly staff (Matthew, and Alex, the chef) The table was very elegant to look at, with nice clean wine glasses and cloth napkins. The menu was not vast, but the choices were excellent, something for everyone. We all chose from the table d'hôte menu, the four of us selecting different dishes, all superb. I had the salmon with maple glaze, absolutely delish, and I heard rave reviews from my eating companions, regarding the calves livers, and the duck, and the chicken, all very tasty. Soup or salad was included, and we were able to substitute french fries for rice, or potatoes, no questions asked. Our server, Matthew, was very polite, and made our meal even better. Cappuccino coffee for me was great, and the whipped milk lasted until the last drop!!!!!!! Thank you for a lovely evening, enjoyed by all. Oh, and the restaurant encourages you to bring your own wine, nice touch!!!! I have already recommended the Alex restaurant to my friends!!!!!
The food was great and the staff very helpful and courteous.
Lovely, friendly restaurant with a nice selection of appetizers, main courses and desserts. Good value too.
I went with my daughter and husband. One had the liver and the other had the flank steak I had the duck. We all enjoyed and shared with each other. Each meal was as expected and delicious. We all enjoyed the evening and the bonus was byow and the desserts were also worth mentioning.
Lovely menu, very courteous and efficient waiter, only problem was the manner in which one had to order the food ie.you could not order just an appetizer.Otherwise, everything was great!
Delicious food, excellent service. The menu is interesting and the presentation very appealing.
only complaint is the cold air comes in when the door is opened
That evening with only 3 tables & 9 patrons the service was nil! I 1/2 hours between salad and main course is inexcusable. Decided to give it another try with a reservation booked several days in advance of Nov 17th. 50 minutes before the reservation they called to cancel us(4 people) because they had over booked. We HAD been regular customers & referred people. NOY ANY MORE. A free dessert was offered for our next booking. HA! I know there will not be a next time based on the past 2 times. Other people have also told me the service has deteriorated. Too bad. Loyalty is very important in the restaurant business. They have lost it.!
Don’t expect anything fabulous. Often they run out of things. Duck and liver are generally a good bet. Salad and soup are average.
This is a great NDG neighbourhood restaurant great to meet old friends you did not see for a long time.
We had a great dinner! The salad was fresh and delicious. The maple-glazed salmon was the best I’ve ever had! Each of my dinner companions were also happy with their choices- the pasta with shrimp and the calf’s liver. All in all a great experience.
We had the salmon with a maple glaze. It was amazing😊
Again a wonderfuldinning experience. The food was excellent with a good selection for the 7 of us dinining. Alex H is a definite must!
The food is reliably good; service, although not always "polished" is friendly, helpful, and polite. The dishes are well presented and good value. The BYOB policy is a welcome addition to the already good value, and makes this upscale restaurant attractive as a more frequent venue.
They did not let us know they dont sell wine when we calles to make the reservation.
It took almost one hour for us to get our dinner served, thats a loooong time.
Excellent as always!
Great food, awesome service...great night!
Waited almost a hr. For food Food was good but on the cool side
we had a table for 5 and everything we tasted was really nice: gnocci, snails, flank steak, soups, deserts.
service was excellent aswell
We were not impressed by the food. Port reduction sauce was too sweet with undercooked flank steak, french fries were processed, frozen and spicy. I had a very thick chicken breast that was also undercooked. Not impressed with desserts either. Those who ate the snails were happy. We went to this restaurant last year and were not happy with the food either. We tried again this year, because we were going to a street fest on Belgrave. This restaurant will not be on my go-back list.
The food is excellent and this place is ideal for special occasions.
The best in town!
Great food and low noise levels. Service is always good and the bonus is one gets to bring your own wine.
Best resto experience we've had in a long time! Everything was on point, from the apps to the dessert. Gnocchi starter was excellent, veal absolutely outstanding, liver, shrimp/salmon pasta were awesome as well! Great birthday celebration!
Food is always very good and the service is excellant . The wait staff are friendly, efficient and helpful. Always love the liver and the escargots were really different and very good on my last visit. It is quite noisy when busy which seems to be a problem with many restaurants. Just put a soft art work on the walls to absorb the sound.
As always the food excellent, as always. The only drawback to the meal was the service. It was friendly and competent; unfortunately, it was very slow. The restaurant must have predicted a slower Wednesday evening because there was only one server on duty.
