Our experience at Bar Laurel is always amazing. It’s our favourite restaurant but this even was especially wonderful.
Fun and unique spot. Will certainly go back and try other items on the menu.
Food was really good. Server was super nice. Really nice place, loved the design of the whole place, the bar looked really nice. Small cozy place. Little loud but great place altogether.
The cocktails are phenomenal here. Our server knew everything on the menu and was great at helping us make decisions. Very unique food options and a lovely ambiance.
Awesome Valentine’s Day menu. Worth falling in love just for this dinner alone.
I DO NOT recommend Bar Laurel for Valentine’s day. There was a strictly fixed menu, $75 a person for VERY sub par food. When we saw the menu and considered just staying for a couple drinks we were told by the waitress that “the expectation” was that we will order dinner, and we are not allowed to keep our reservation if we only plan on having drinks. Really disappointed in the service and selection of food for this special occasion. It would have been nice to at least be informed upon reservation of “the expectations” and the fixed menu.
Well, i will be back tomorrow...three days from the last time. How is that for an impression? :)
fantastic menu, wine & cocktail list. very attentive & friendly service. great ambiance. highly recommend.
A small space in Hintonburg that has lots of promise with it's Spanish-themed menu and inspiration. Unfortunately, did not live up to the hype. The "background" music roared into the foreground at volumes too high for any real enjoyment outside of a dance club making it hard to hear the person sitting across from you. Other dinners shout so loud that I have an intimate knowledge of the weekend date to our left and the research project of the aspiring academic on our right.
Entering the front door greets you at a dinner's high top table and no staff, waiting queue or even any indication what to do other than impose on the couple enjoying their drinks.
We were eventually seated and our server introduced herself after ten minutes of waiting to be noticed. She gave a well-received wine recommendation based on my partner's likes and my draught was enjoyable.
The generous charcuterie fell flat and single-noted; many slices of imported salami. The sides (mustard, pickled peppers, beets and onions) were the star of the board and it's a shame they only gave a nibble of each. The cheese plate was much the same: too small portions of the extras from the chef and the added sting of a nearly 30$ plate. The stuffed mushroom caps were bland and inexplicably placed atop burnt (not pleasantly charred, burnt) toasts.
The best dish of the night was the cauliflower which WAS pleasantly charred and topped with toasted almond. The octopus was perfectly cooked but left much to be desired with lack of textural variance and it tasted overwhelmingly of paprika which drowned out the rest of the plate.
Rounding out the evening were two orders of "skewers" which came as small plated portions (~3 per order). The iberico was balanced but the texture was limp and dissolved in the unappealing sense when consumed. The halloumi was tasty but wasn't innovative or spectacular for the value.
With so much dining competition in the area, Bar Laurel is not one I'll be eager to overpay at again.
This is a great place for sharing plates - because there are SO MANY amazing small plates and its fun to try as many as possible. It's not inexpensive, but it's well worth it.
Food was delicious and our server was greeat in helping us choosing the food given our allergies
Intimate & delicious! The perfect spot for a post-work wind down at the bar, a date or a gathering of friends!
My first visit to Bar Laurel in the Westboro area. Service was attentive, food very good. They accommodated my friend's allergy to onions. Will add to my list of good neighbourhood find in Ottawa.
Great selection of options. Staff were very knowledgeable about the food and drink and mentioned gluten free options for bread made in house. Also were great to mix up a non alcoholic beverage for we when asked.
Would definitely come back.
Great place with amazing drinks. The atmosphere profound! The Friendly staff makes it welcoming and homie while having that feel of sophistication
Hello, we found the wine very expensive. On our third bottle, we opted for the lowest price wine. Sever said it was an adequate choice. I would think all your wines would be more than adequate.
Poor service, wine way too expensive( they only have a few bottles under 100$), very noisy. Food really bad especially the lamb and the octopus. My recommendation... go to another restaurant
Excellent service, food and presentation.
We went in for New Year's Eve and had the set menu with wine pairings. All the dishes were delightful but the beef was the best. We sat at the bar and had fantastic service from Quinn. A wonderful night out although hard on the pocketbook.
We went for New Years Eve and sat at the bar. Great place to sit and see the fantastic drinks get made. Unfortunately, it was incredibly slow. We didn't complain and they offered 20 dollars off our bill because they knew it had been quite slow. Drinks were incredible and I'd love to go back for more.
Once again, Bar Laurel was fun a place to eat, the food and drinks were awesome and the service was really great. 5 stars all around. :)
Much too noisy - sound dampeners would be a good idea.
The restaurant was very crowded and space was tight. People kept bumping into one of us as the chair was close to the bar.
Service was friendly but the place was so busy that our server wasn’t able to check on our table during the meal.
Food was fine, though what we ordered didn’t require any preparation so can’t comment on the cuisine.
We were a group of four sitting at the front banquette and it was extremely noisy.
Bar Laurel blew our minds. The food was incredible, impressing us with each dish that came out. The drinks were perfectly made, the service with Rhys was outstanding and the overall evening was relaxed, delicious and so enjoyed. It was the first time for all of us and we cannot wait to go back.
Cool spot. Food was very attractive, but not as bold flavored as my palate craves.
Always a great place to drink hard-to-find wine and enjoy great food!
Superb dining. Will definitely go back
Bit too noisy
Really enjoyed the flavours of the different dishes we tried, as well as the special cocktail of the day. Loved sitting at the bar.
The atmosphere of this place is unparalleled. The drinks and small bites are great to be enjoyed with a group of friends. The place is casual and good value for money.
J’aurais aimé entendre de la musique pour plus d’ambiance samedi soir dernier ☺️
I would highly recommend this restaurant. However, if you are looking to have a conversation over dinner, I would avoid going on a weekend. I asked our server which evenings tend to be quieter and it seems like Mondays or Tuesdays are more conducive to the type of atmosphere I would prefer to have a great meal and visit with friends.
While the food and service were both enjoyable, the noise level was so high that I came away with a sore throat from needing to shout across the table, in order to be heard. When that space was first opened as a restaurant a number of years ago, the owner had to put considerable time and effort into providing buffers to deal with the noise. I would highly recommend that you do the same. I must admit that I couldn’t wait to get out of the restaurant despite all of the positives.
Food and drinks were awesome. Gimlet cocktail was great. Didn’t have anything I didn’t like. A bit pricy, but worth it.
Service could have been friendlier and not so pushy to get out by 8:30pm
Food was delicious and bar tender was up to the challenge we set!
Too noisy and too dark.
food deserves better.
More wines by the glass or half.
The server Tom was outstanding
The food was heavenly, the drinks were delicious. LOVED IT!!!
I would absolutely recommend Laurel to a friend, but on a week night when it’s hopefully less busy and less noisy.
The restaurant was very loud, with ruined the ambiance a little, and the space felt a little cramped.
The food however is fantastic, and so are the drinks.
Overall a good experience.
