Big Grove Tavern
Love love love! Such a cool place and the mimosas are devine
Yes, I would recommend Big Grove to a friend, but with these suggestions: if you are part of group and you want to be able to easily visit during the meal, do not go during common eating hours--it's far too loud in the room to hear people, even across the table. Also, be aware that the service staff can vary widely; some are absolutely excellent, but sometimes--like this visit--service was not enjoyable: she interrupted conversation immediately literally every single time she came to our table (even a pause would have helped so we could pause talking) and she asked the same question regarding drinks and appetizers multiple times.
Amazing food and drinks, outstanding service, and an ambiance that can’t be beat! Truly a gem in Central IL!
If you want an attentive server, this is not the place. Bottomless mimosas yet we only saw our server once after we ordered.
Loved It. Lots of delicious choices and very friendly staff. Will definitely be back!
Busy Saturday night. Reservation was honored quickly - seated in rear room which was quieter than the main room. Deviled eggs appetizer always good. Burgers are good and a decent value, dinner items can get pricey as can drinks. Patio is a great place for a drink in warmer weather.
Noise level is a real problem. I love the music from the 1980s, but it is not the kind of music that is appropriate for a high end restaurant. Open space contributed to difficulty of hearing your dinner companions. Layout of tables does nothing to add any ambiance to the experience. Wait staff was fine, but they seemed overworked. Didn't feel doted upon, and I certainly never felt that they were paying attention with where we were in the meal. Food was good enough. Prices were reasonable.
Big Grove Tavern was excellent! Food was amazing and delicious! Service was great! Noise level was not an issue because we were in one of the rooms off the main dining area & bar.
Just out for dinner on a regular business trip. Wanted to treat myself, and enjoyed the restaurant very much. Great service and great food.
Great food! Great atmosphere! Great service!
Great staff. Overall the food was bland and dry. We had the surf and turf tacos and pork tacos. Even the Currie soup was was more like an oatmeal.
Cocktails were wonderful, as was our wait person Kory
Wonderful! Took my girlfriend here for her birthday. The cocktails were amazing and the food was delicious. Great service too.
We were there for Saturday brunch. We had been there a few years ago and the food was very high level. Saturday the food was very average. I had eggs Benedict but the sauce did not have a good flavor and the english muffin was not really toasted well. It was just ok. It was also very noisy so it was hard to talk. I was disappointed in my experience. I will say the service was good and the drinks were good. But in the past the food was bistro level and now it is sports bar level. Many like that but I do not care for it. I would not recommend and I will not return.
Always fun to go there for weekend brunch. The menu keeps evolving so there always seems to be something new to try. The service is usually good and today it was excellent. Be careful though. If you get the bottomless Mimosas’, and some appetizers, and then a main course, you can end up spending $40-50 or more per person with tax and tip. But for a weekend brunch splurge it’s almost worth it
I *LOVE* Big Grove Tavern. It is by far my favorite restaurant in Champaign and I am always, always happy to go. Recently I went there for lunch and ended up very dissatisfied with the service. Everyone in my party received something wrong about their order. Our waiter was beyond inattentive and the other waitstaff did not step in to help, even when we tried to get their attention. We had to ask multiple times for simple things before they were delivered, and the overall time spent in the restaurant was much longer than usual. The food was as delicious as ever; they really get elevated comfort food at Big Grove. I will absolutely be back, but I probably won't bring colleagues or business meetings there again.
Many of the menu items haven't been changed since the restaurant opened. It's time to shake it up a bit. I don't think any of us would really rave about our food. The chicken and dumplings were just ok.
Our waitress was dressed as if she was going to a campus bar. Although polite, she did not seem happy to be serving us, and spent some time talking to other staff at the bar rather than coming back to take our orders.
She was patient and polite about bringing multiple drinks orders over as our table of 6 did not order our first round at the same time.
This is not a quiet place, as expected from a room with a very high ceiling with no soundproofing and with no dividing walls between bar and restaurant areas. I would not call this "energetic" which is how the OT survey phrases it. I would describe it as "too loud to hear each other unless you are speaking VERY loudly" even when the restaurant is half filled.
We hadn't visited here in quite awhile, and it will be quite awhile before we do so again, except perhaps to visit the bar. The cocktails were well mixed. No real ginger ale, root beer or bottled sodas available for non-drinkers, as I would expect from a restaurant at this price level.
All in all, we had an enjoyable experience. The service started out not so good and we waited (after being seated) for a good 15 minutes (admittedly, this was New Year's Eve) with no one paying any attention. Finally, one of the table setters passed us several times and asked if we needed assistance. We told her that no one had waited on us yet. She apologized and went directly to the host to let him know. Within minutes, our waiter appeared and was very attentive from that point on. When my drink (a glass of Prosecco) was delivered with absolutely no bubbles and flat as a pancake, he immediately replaced it and apologized. Our appetizer of crab cakes was spectacular. The entrees, however, were ok but nothing special. Husband's 12 oz. Ribeye was cooked to medium rare as requested but was tough and chewy. My Steak Frites were not medium as ordered but were very close to well done and also somewhat dried out and tough. The sides were very nice. I give the ambiance a 3 because there must be absolutely no sound absorbing material used in the construction of this restaurant. As always, it was extremely loud and one has to shout at your partner to carry on a conversation. Not conducive to a having a pleasant conversation with your partner. We have avoided this restaurant in the winter for that reason (in the summer, you can sit outside) but our favorite restaurant downtown where we had NYE reservations closed abruptly and we had to go elsewhere.
Enjoyed everything but the lights need to be dimmer. Much dimmer. Better for a ambience on a one on one date. For big parties..then brighten it up! Not sure if that's what you're looking for but overall enjoyed it.
The restaurant looked really nice, my wife loves the ambiance, but I didn't appreciate the host seating us in the back by the kitchen and bathrooms when the restaurant was 80% empty, our waitress did a nice job. I got the bone in ribeye which was a little undercooked and chewy, it came with some flavorless green beans, the mashed potatoes were good. My dessert was delicious, I had the fried pecan pie and my wife had the vanilla cake with ice cream and fruit, she didn't finish hers, she couldn't tell if it was stale or it was made that firm, she mentioned it was a first, not finishing her dessert. wish I could have rated it higher, but i can't.
Always enjoy dining here, whether for brunch, lunch or dinner. Always great. Taste food, friendly staff.
The food was good and the service was as well. We celebrated a birthday there and it was a nice evening.
We went for an early dinner on a Friday. Great food and excellent service. The only concern was how loud the music was during our dinner. It was loud enough that we had difficulty having a conversation.
They have a really great location. The layout with the horseshoe bar (really big) and tables was really nice. The menu selection had some interesting features. Food and service were great! Our server Katie was super friendly and helpful.
The food and service were excellent. We enjoyed pretzel and flatbread appetizers to start. Enjoyed the Apple Cider Sangria. The four entrees were Steak & Frites, Prime Rib, Shrimp & Grits, and Chicken & Dumplings. All were excellent with the beef served as ordered...rare. Our server was attentive, gave helpful suggestions, and gave great service. I wish I remembered her name.
Early Dinner after Ballet. We arrived 1/2 hour early. Staff was very courteous and immediately got our table together.
Make a trip th Big Grove Tavern....it's worth it, especially if you are visiting camput!
My meal was fantastic. I started with a half dozen oysters, and they were fresh & delicious. And this is in the middle of Illinois. This was a tip-off that the place cares and only will serve the good stuff. For my entree I had the Chicken Mole dinner and it was an amazing mole sauce. Much better than most Mexican restaurants in fact. It was truly delicious. The pretzel bread was a great starter and served freshly baked and warm. It is clear the Big Grove endeavours to use only the freshest and best ingredients and organic wherever possible. Our server Chris and our bartender Katie did an exemplary job with the service. GM Scott paid us a table visit and it was clear that he has an eye on all that is going on around him. Kudos all around. I cannot wait to return.
The food was excellent! It did however take an unusually long time to get our food. Also, my husband ordered a second Moscow Mule and it didn’t taste anything like the first one. He asked the waiter to add more ginger beer, but it still didn’t taste like a Moscow Mule.
thanks for accommodating our large group for the IHSA football playoffs
We were visiting from out of town and had a larger party. The staff was flexible and friendly, the room we sat in was perfect, and the food/wine was terrific. Will come back whenever we are in town!!!
Everything great except, I didn't like having to give a credit card for reservations and for the parking in the parking garage receipt did not work for me.
We have been here a few times during both dads and moms weekend events and highly enjoyed the experience. This visit overall was not good. All entrees were cold and over cooked. Service was slow. I felt like because we were sitting in back room we were forgotten about at first. 2 waitress passed our table and said they would be back or send someone and never did. Finally Miles came to our table. He was friendly and apologetic which was nice but as mentioned all entrees were cold and over cooked. Very disappointing. I understand it was busy due to U of I weekend but in future Big Grove needs to be prepared to service busy weekends.
Had a delicious Sunday brunch! Love that they also take reservations. The maple bacon doughnut was incredible as was our meal.
Amazing biscuits...huge burritos and tasty pancakes!
The pork chop was spectacular, but the service was absolutely horrific! Our waitress was rude to a point where we thought we were being punked! no refills on water, no cutlery provided, we literally had to ask for everything. The server dropped the sauce all over the table and then threw the napkin we asked for on the table. We would go back but making sure that we did not get the same server
Waiter was terrible and food over cooked!
The food was overpriced. Nothing was cooked properly and the quality was poor. The only good part of the experience was the service.
Best brunch in Champaign! Good food, service, and bottomless mimosas!
Sat at bar. Waited s while for bartender to come with s menu. Tacos ok but not great
