Food was absolutely delicious and the service was amazing! It’s a hidden gem on the backside of the mall attached to Saks Fifth Ave - SO great!
Sadly, I cannot recommend the risotto, as both times it has been overcooked. The mushroom bruschetta was tasty, even though the toast was slightly burnt. I also would recommend the pan fried calamari over the crispy, even though I have never tried it. I own up to not saying anything to the server because she did not need to have that kind of night, where everything was described as shallow and flat tasting.
In the hope of being constructively critical, my intent is to review what this restaurant can easily improve.
1) If the restaurant is going to be come an eco-warrior - no problem. If there are not going to be straws available at the restaurant, please provide clean drinkware without some previous diner's lipstick on it. Also, the pencil thin glassware filled with ice far past the brim is simply impossible to drink from directly.
2) The crust on the pizza and the calzone needs a completely new recipe. The current recipe is totally devoid of flavour; the top is mushy and the bottom is rock hard.
3) The sauce on the pizza is just plain unadulterated canned Marzano or other tomatoes. The flavour is diluted and tinny, and lends to the "mush" on the top of the pizza, which is clearly made without thought or care as is evident from its shocking unevenness of toppings. A better solution would be to reduce the tomatoes to a sauce and add something to enliven the flavour of the sauce, which currently tastes more watery than water.
4) The Breakfast Calzone is supposed to contain sausage....but fresh sausage rather than "week old funky" would be much better. Also, rock-hard boiled egg inside is unflattering to the dish. Also, don't use "rehydrated mushrooms stored in water". The flavour becomes terribly diluted to the point that small chunks of wood would have been more flavourful. Also - the small pieces of potato inside the Calzone need to be actually cooked and sliced thin if you are going to use them. On second thought - this breakfast calzone is a terrible idea with exceedingly poor execution.
5) This restaurant would definitely benefit from a consulting executive chef to completely revamp the menu, which is largely inaccessible for a light and enjoyable lunch. Low attendance speaks do this.
6) Servers: please don't count and divvy your tips at the bar while ignoring the clients who would like attendance. It conveys poorly.
7) Experienced Management.
Not impressed. Food was lackluster. Pasta undercooked. Sauce and meatballs were bland. Service was horrible. Where did my waitress go? Won't be returning. Won't be recommending.
You should have cocktails on happy hour. Gin and tonic $14!
Food was great and the service was outstanding
We had a lovely NYE dinner with items from both the special NYE menu and the regular menu. The soup of the day was a bit too salty to our liking. However, it is expected as both of us prefer our food pretty much unsalted. The mains were wonderfully done and offered a delicate balance of enough sides and sauce to the main protein (chicken and braised beef rib) portions, while not overwhelming in total amount. The in-house made pasta was flexible, served nearly el-dante, and finished cooking on the plate in the sauce (as should be and is often not the case in Calgary Italian restaurants' scene). The gnocchi were fluffy, but firm in shape, and offered delicate taste. Desserts were good for the most part, but were not the height of the meal. Our semifreddo was served too 'freddo' (i.e. too frozen) and we had to wait with it for about 5 or so minutes. The tiramisu was perfect in size but had too much dough to custard ratio. The main issue with both dishes was that they were too sweet to our liking. Blame it on our European origin vs. the overtly sweet-tooth North-American preference, or don't, the bottom line is the dessert was good, but not outstanding.
We look forward to our return to Buffo to sample dishes from other sections of the menu we couldn't try this time around.
Service is good, Food was very good especially the beet salad and Tiramisu.
The food was delicious and our server was very attentive. Wonderful time was had by all!
We were seated in the side room which was great! They were very accommodating with my nieces’ allergies.
All round great experience
Food was good, water was $7, and we were not warned. Service was polite if a bit rushed at times.
This was the second time I had been here and it was outstanding. I was celebrating my birthday and we were in the small room which very nice and intimate. My son who is a chef complimented how fresh the food was, he really enjoyed. He said he would come back. I certainly would recommend this restaurant to family and friends.
Food was good overall. Portions of some of the appetizers were small. Been here a few times and I’ll keep coming back!
I would recommend the food but if I ever have the same server I would ask to be moved. He was inept at almost everything. We had to call him over for everything and more than once because he would forget. The table beside us was equally frustrated. I think he needs some training.
Place about half full for 1 hour before 8pm close on Sunday. Service was attentive and prompt. Appetizers - olives and bread were good to very good. Pasta and chicken Parmesan we had were good but not great. Best thing was no dishes to clean. For place that claims fresh pasta daily this was not good enough
Service was disappointing
Celebrating our birthdays, the food was great; surprised we didn’t get a complimentary dessert for our birthday.
We enjoy Buffo, and this visit did not disappoint. The special pasta on offer was terrific, and the refreshed menu is good- keeping some of the previous dishes and incorporating some new. We find the ambiance a welcome break from 'the mall'. It feels like a nice adult space-- even though it is family friendly, the restaurant doesn't have a frenetic kid zone feel.
It was our golf ladies get together before Christmas. We were all very impressed with the food, service and accommodations. The staff were excellent and big compliments to the chefs because they did an outstanding job. We will definitely come back and I would recommend this restaurant to friends and family. I have a birthday in December and I requested to my husband this is where he can bring me for my birthday.
Thought we would try something different and was glad we did. Meal was excellent.
This was my first visit. Met a friend for lunch on a Tuesday which happened to be the day for discounted pasta and pizza and was an unexpected bonus. It was busier than I would have expected, which is always a good sign. Food was definitely good but at the same time definitely not outstanding nor very good. Service was also good with just the main complaint being our waters were never refilled even once. Was still an enjoyable visit and would recommend it.
The main courses were delicious but the soup and coffees were not hot enough. They did comp our desserts which was appreciated after the dreadful service.
Quite loud in the small corner room. Hard to have a conversation. Small portions but food is good.
Great food, great service, great location, just what Chinook Center needed!
The service was excellent but the food was very average. The drinks took forever to come, perhaps a new bartender? The bill was quite expensive and I don’t feel worth the price. I would maybe go back for lunch instead and try again.
Door to outside near us and every time door opened it was very cold
Great food, great service, nice decor. Highly recommend.
This was my first visit to Buffo's. I liked the fact that parking was so simple and close to the front entrance, as it is in the West Parking lot in Chinook Centre and is well lit. My friend and I met there for dinner to celebrate her birthday. Kudos to our server Roxanne, who also handled the bartender role and made our evening very enjoyable, as she always appeared at our table at just the right time. She was very sweet and pleasant, and at the end of the meal, surprised my friend with a sample taste of two of their desserts. Also, she was open to mixing up a cocktail which was not on the menu. We ordered the Caesar salad to share, but it was smaller than I expected and some of the leaves were not as fresh and crisp as they could be. My friend ordered the carbonara pasta special, which was good she said, but when she tasted my mushroom pizza with bechamel sauce, we both agreed that it was a winner! The crust was perfect, not too thick and not too thin, and the sauce with the mushrooms on top made for a very tasty and unforgettable pizza! If I return to Buffo, I would definitely order the Mushroom pizza again! And perhaps try their Bruchetta as I've heard it's pretty good too.
Great gem hidden away in the back of Chinook Center, park right at the door. Food is delicious and it's a cool ambience. This time we sat in a different area, kind of an orange room. Not as cool as the rest of the restaurant.
Our second visit to Buffo and I felt it was good value. I will go back.
Best Happy Hour in town! (2-6PM) Wednesdays are half price bottles of wine, plus half price appetizers. We went pre-movie and had an amazing meal of Happy Hour options. Outstanding food (I'd like to go back to try their other menu items), excellent service and great value. We'll be back!
Our food was excellent. However our waitress was absolutely awful. Her name was Helen. We waited 20 mins for drinks, 30 mins for her to come around with a machine so we could pay. Her excuse was “sorry, there’s a regular here.” Like okay, so we don’t matter as much because there’s a regular here? Waiting 20 mins for a drink and 30 to pay our check is atrocious. But the food was remarkable so we will probably be back no thanks to Helen.
It was a terrible experience. From our server to the dry Chicken parm. Horrible.
I always order the penne and it was, as usual, outstanding. i could use more as find I am still hungry. The desserts disappointing. No pies or Italian panna cotta? None of us ordered dessert and we all wanted it. My biggest complaint is the noise level. i voted energetic but for us, and we are senior's, too loud and not great Italian music. However, I requested table 40 and 41 and this was made available to us so helped. we prefer this table (2).
Great staff and delicious food.
Boffo is a nice Italian restaurant that isn't overpriced. My only criticism is that all except for one seafood dish has black squid ink in it. My dish would have been the best ever except for the awful black ink squid risotto. I wouldn't have ordered it, but I so wanted to try the fish and I thought how bad could it be??? Well it was pretty bad!!
Absolutely amazing, above and beyond. Great food and great service, bartender Rox is amazing
Our food was excellent as always but service was poor, server kept walking past us to service other tables despite making eye contact several times. Water was never filled without asking.
Great service very friendly and attentive staff. Food was very delish we came for the summer feast for a second year in a row and were not disappointed.
I love the space very bright with lots of windows and also a full view of the kitchen. Prices are really good for what you get.
We will be back no doubt.
I took my dad there for summer feast and the food was great. There were quite a few options, which is why I picked Buffo. Our server entered my appetizer wrong and reassured us that my salad would be out shortly. Shortly turned out to be 20 minutes. Understandable due to dinner rush but would have appreciated a check in after rather than us sitting around and wondering if she forgot again. Overall, it was a pleasant experience.
