Butcher and Banker NYC
Butcher & Banker is no ordinary steakhouse. A dozen different steaks are on offer, but non-steak eaters will dine exceedingly well here.
Butcher & Banker pays homage to the New Yorker Hotel’s storied history. The New Yorker opened in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression as the then largest hotel in the city. It has attracted a who’s who of entertainers and dignitaries from around the world, including Muhammad Ali, JFK, Joan Crawford and Nikola Tesla.
Beneath the hotel, a bank vault and offices were occupied by the Manufacturers Trust Company until 1980. With the opening of Butcher & Banker, the public can see the vault for the first time in 37 years.

The food, and service was AMAZING! My husband and i had the tacos as an appetizer..and let me just say they was so cute and small but packed with so
Absolutely a wonderful experience. Great service
Really enjoyed our meal which we booked for Thanksgiving and was also our last night in NYC.
Whilst expensive it is well worth it and comparable to other similar establishments in the city.
I will be back again!
Great service, food and wine!
It was Thanksgiving dine out. Enjoyed it very much.
Nice restaurant that features an old bank vault. Great food and bar
Perfect steaks and side dishes. Wines are good value. Professional service in a unique bank vault
We celebrated Thanksgiving here with my family. My teens, husband and myself loved our appetizers: calamari, iceberg salad, butternut squash soup, French onion soup and macaroni n cheese. My husband and I stuck with the traditional turkey and stuffing entree while the teens did filets. The cocktails where amazing and worth the visit alone in addition to the amazing service and ambience. I would go back here again the next time we are in the NYC area.
Food was fantastic, but service was subpar. We had indicated on the reservation that we were celebrating getting married earlier that day and we were initially sat in a shared booth by the bar in a nearly empty room. They moved us to the vault, which was much better, however our server never acknowledged or inquired about our special occasion and did the bare minimum.
Very great experience for a date night in New York with a boo or just with friends!
The worst service I ever experienced. Classless restaurant. Was there for an hour before my glass was refilled with water. Our table was forgotten about multiple times. Not a good experience at all. Left before our entrees came.
For the price and location of this restaurant my expectations where very high. Service was slow my waiter kept forgetting orders or never came to check on the table. My medium tomahawk was chewy and lacked flavor. The max and cheese thick cut bacon ans crab cake was amazing though. This is a restaurant to try for thr ambiance not anything else
Started out at the bar where the Manhattans were delicious and served by an engaging bartender. Once we were seated, it quickly went downhill. Waitress was ok at first, but when we didn’t get one of our appetizers and we inquired about it, her response was, “Don’t worry about it. It’s coming.”
Okaaaaay…we waited and it eventually came out. Once entrees were delivered, we knew we were in trouble. Two of the four of us ordered filet mignon, but only one of us got one. The other person got a different cut of meat. When we mentioned it, they brought something else out that they claimed was a butterflied filet but it didn’t look like any filet mignon any of us had ever had. None of the meat knocked our socks off in terms of quality or taste. We ordered three sides, but only one arrived. When we inquired again about missing items, the waitress used her standard line, “Don’t worry about it.” One more side arrived, but the third one never did. Got no satisfaction from the manager, and then they had the gall to charge us $25 more than the menu price for our bottle of wine. At that point we just wanted out. When you have a cool space like a vault for people to dine in, I guess you don’t have to follow through with good food or customer service. We were very excited to dine here but majorly disappointed. Don’t waste your time or money.
When I checked in, they sat us by the kitchen. I asked to be moved. Then they seated us in the middle of the room next to the vault door where EVERYONE stands to take their picture. We didn't feel like we had our own space. Towards the end of the meal, we couldn't find our waitress for our check. The plus side, the food was good and plentiful (eating the leftovers today) and our waitress did bring us a complimentary glass of champagne for our birthdays. I will go back only if I can sit in the vault room.
cool vibe eating in an old bank vault. food was delicious.
We spent our anniversary here and we loved it. The ambiance is so cool. I love the decor. I like that it’s hidden and intimate. The food portions are large and everything was delicious. Try the johnnie walker butter. It’s incredible!
Love the vault room and coziness ! Great cocktails .
we had a great time. The wait staff was very attentive, the food was great and if you get a table in the vault it's pretty unique. It was pretty noisy in there when the vault was full of diners, but i was still able to hear my party.
What a little hidden gem! Was looking last minute for a steakhouse and this restaurant popped up I read the reviews and they were all great so we gave it a try and it did not disappoint at all. The steak was amazing so flavorful and nice portion and the mac & cheese side amazing. Great restaurant and really cool ambiance would definitely recommend this place and the prices for what you get were great
The portions are too big which makes it less pleasant as it can not all be eate]n but one is left feeling wasteful.
The food was good. Not cheap.... my bill with tip was 360 for two ppl. Here is the thing, the place is lacking class. And an elegance a high end steak house should have.... here are two examples. 1. They have music playing. But it’s hip hop type music (kenye west, cardi b. Beyoncé etc). IMO this doesn’t set the mood quite right. If you like that? Great. Otherwise stay away. 2. No inspired dress codes. They seem to be okay with Yankee t-shirts and attire for a basketball game. At least this is what I witnessed. Should be business casual enforced. I have seen ppl dressed better at Applebee’s. Btw, don’t let them sit you in the back by the kitchen. Noise from kitchen will ruin your meal. Not just kitchen noises you hear. You will hear laughing, clapping and yelling (like you would at a party). It’s distracting and not worth it. If they fix those things this place could be so much more and a winner.
Your restaurant was nice however you had a guest in distress who eventually fainted and fell to the ground and the manager was more worried about constantly walking by tables and closing out their tab to get them out of the restaurant then helping your guest. The server was great the food was mediocre probably would never visit again.
Food was okay ,Morton's steaks are better. They season with too much garlic. Not worth the money.
The setting is amazing, the ambience and background noise give the place a buzz but doesn’t get so loud you can’t speak, the food was best I’ve tasted in New York and the service was 1st class from beginning to end.
Would recommend to anyone looking for an incredible dining experience and will definitely be back myself.
Cool setting within old bank vault. But be aware that there are no windows in the restaurant. Short rib was very good.
good food an ambiance. Good for date night. Close to MSG.
The filet was phenomenal!! I would plan another NY trip just to come back here.
First time at Butcher and Banker and I must say the food was amazing. The ambiance was great. Our server was ok. Felt a little Standoffish but other than that everything was great. Would definitely recommend and by far has been added to my top three favorite steakhouses.
Service started off a bit shaky, but after a quick chat with the waiter, everything was great! Food and drinks were excellent and the atmosphere was incredibly unique! We will definitely return!
The wife and I were here, celebrating our anniversary. The service was great and the food was amazing. I highly recommend the Bone-in Rib Eye. It was a very pleasant ambiance we thoroughly enjoyed our evening here.
Service was rushed and inattentive up front and through at least the first half of the meal. Entrees we’re not fully described well or in a fashion that was relaxed. Ambiance was great and product was solid. I had the NY strip which was solid but NOT spectacular. If coming here for a pre-show this is worth a chance but there are much better steak options in lower Manhattan
Steak was overdone. 35 minutes into our meal we got a bacon appetizer and still didn’t get our drinks. Big letdown
The food was just ok. Our appetizers came out before ours drink order and way to fast to be freshly cooked. We ordered the thrice cooked French fries, asked about the preparation after receiving the unexpectedly soggy fries, and were told they are just fried once and not thrice cooked in any way. The “buttery mashed potatoes” looked and tasted like instant potatoes as well and were not in fact buttery. The steaks were great, which is why I gave the place 3 stars for food instead of just one star. Due to the lack of quality of the food, besides the actual steaks, I do not believe the value is good. Overall I enjoyed the environment and would try the place again, but not for at least a year to see if their quality has begun to match the price point and ambiance.
Busy boys and servers were careless, brushing up against us when placing or retrieving plates. Server too distracted with other tables. Meat was excellent, everything else was mediocre.
We went for a date before our Broadway show. We were the only ones there in the entire restaurant the whole time we dined there. No one else came. It was strange. We split the tomahawk steak and it was really good but half of it was tough so it didn’t fill either of us up. Great service (not the waiter but the guy that takes care of you).
Service was extremely friendly and they staff ensured I didn’t have to wait long to order and ensured to keep my water glass constantly filled.
Food….. the NY strip steak was a little tough. The creamed spinach was super salty.
Cocktail was like drinking straight tequila.
I’ve been to a number of 5 start restaurants lately that all check vaccine cards. The hostess here didn’t even ask. Meanwhile their Open Table pages states the following “Proof of vaccination required to dine indoors.”
First time and absolutely loved it! Wonderful food and great service! My friend and I had a very relaxing and delicious dinner!
The food was really not great especially for the price.
My hanger steak was not edible and my husband ordered the prime rib which was not a prime cut of meat at all. Fatty and tough.
However, even though the food was terrible, the service was worse. While we know and are aware of staffing shortages, our waiter was exceptionally rude. Rushed us with our courses, opened an extremely expensive bottle of wine so carelessly. I am not being a sob, I just mean it was a chore and he could care less. He could have also hurt someone with the 3way i saw him open a bottle of champagne at the next table over.
The place is a cool concept and looks pleasing to the eye but we will not be coming back here.
Great quality, great service. Nearby to Madison Square Garden. Excellent spot for pre game feast !
4.5 stars… just misses out on 5.
Unique dining experience in an underground old bank vault. The food was incredible and service a delight. The one down fall was the lack of ambiance - for a Thursday evening dinner it was missing the hustle and bustle of NYC. Highly recommend it though!
