Butcher and Banker NYC
Butcher & Banker is no ordinary steakhouse. A dozen different steaks are on offer, but non-steak eaters will dine exceedingly well here.
Butcher & Banker pays homage to the New Yorker Hotel’s storied history. The New Yorker opened in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression as the then largest hotel in the city. It has attracted a who’s who of entertainers and dignitaries from around the world, including Muhammad Ali, JFK, Joan Crawford and Nikola Tesla.
Beneath the hotel, a bank vault and offices were occupied by the Manufacturers Trust Company until 1980. With the opening of Butcher & Banker, the public can see the vault for the first time in 37 years.

Hostess seemed irritated upon arriving, we were sat down with only one food menu, it was my boyfriends birthday, we were accommodated to sit in the vault which was nice but the service overall wasn’t what I expected being in an expensive steakhouse. The staff seemed a bit overwhelmed. I just didn’t feel like the dinner was special. The ambiance gave me old school, all American. There was 80’s music playing very low. Almost felt like I was sitting at a dinner with a radio on. Food was ok. Overall just wouldn’t come back.
The wait staff was great. They accommodated my gluten allergy. The scallops were divine. My husband loved his skirt steak
Came here for dinner for my boyfriends birthday. The service was wonderful, the food was excellent, will definitely be back when visiting the city again!
We were in town to see Hamilton at the Richard Rogers Theater. I made early reservations at Butcher and Banker for we were staying at the New Yorker. They did not disappoint. We were seated in a timely fashion and provided with excellent service and accommodation. My wife had the filet mignon which was a very generous portion and I myself indulged in the duck breast with cherries.
Mango sorbet topped off the meal and prepared us for the show.
On one of the coldest nights of the year so far, this place made us feel warm and cozy. Thanks for a great time.
Great place. Friendly staff. Food was fantastic. Located below New Yorker Hotel. It’s worth the visit.
Lovely ambiance, delicious food & great staff
Excellent service- I have foods allergies, but Ray was able to recommend some good choices. Very charming and funny made his customers at ease.
Excellent food - t-bone steak was a recommendation and tasted heavenly. I had no starters as I have been warned about the size of the serving.
As a dessert - I had delicious sorbet.
It's a special place with a character. I am sure that it is worth considering for a special occasion dinner.
Great food great experience
Posto molto bello, location raffinata. Torre di salmone meravigliosa, tomowak invece un po’ magra. Prezzo alto ma non altissimo per la qualità nel complesso.
Very nice place to eat. Yes it expensive but the size of your entree's wasa lot. Was on honeymoon New York and wanted a nice sit down for New Years night.
It was ok but not as special as expexted. The portions were defonitely too big for us. Would have been good if the waiter had told us before. We have left so much food there for a high price Unfortunately.
Server and manager was very attentive. Enjoyed eating in a vault
The steak we all had was excellent. Filet mignon or fillet steak to us Brits. One small niggle I asked for Oscar crab on top of my steak, which never appeared and what did appear for the extra USD 14 was quite frankly a joke…the rest of the meal we had was fine. If you want portion size a plenty then this is the place to eat. We sat in the vault which was quite noisy when the room was full, should have dined in the lounge area which looked cool with massive door of the vault open and warm cosy setting…the waiters were attentive but probably they maybe needed a few more staff as the evening went on…but that was probably due to Covid. Anyway thought it was a good venue, steak was moist but I think if we come back to New York next year, we will try another steak place just to compare…
Dinning experience was amazing. The decor was immaculate and very intimate. The servers were very nice and attentive. The food came in a timely fashions and the drinks were strong and delicious. I definitely recommend going for an intimate dinner, birthday celebration, or just a date night.
Below average quality over all. Steak and apps were not up to par with other high end steak houses.
Was incredibly excited about this restaurant. Waited 2 years to visit due to Covid and finally made it on Christmas.
Ambiance - nearly perfect. Fake candles on the tables in the vault were a little cold, and music was nearly inaudible. Sad, because they were playing Frank in the main lounge and that’s perfect for this venue.
Bankers Bacon Starter - quite delicious but definitely for two, was as big as a steak. Poorly listed
Oysters - listed as ‘northeast oysters’ and were least memorable oysters I’ve ever had. Steer clear of no name oysters
Mashed Potatoes - good
Asparagus - good
NY Strips - ordered 2 medium and received 2 well done. Bernaise sauce (add on) was served cold. I understand there are many ways to experience this but the preference was warm. So we asked for a heat up. 15 minutes later it came back to table cold. Don’t be appreciate the attitude coming out of this kitchen.
Dessert: skipped, wasn’t feeling too confident at this point in the dinner
not for these prices, go to Ruth Chris
Lovely spot with a nice menu. Service was great and ambiance is stylish, but prices are high for the quality of food.
Our experience at Butcher and Banker was PHENOMENAL. Excellent customer service and the food was ahhhmazing! I can’t wait to dine here again in the future and recommend this place for tourist as well!
Everything I hoped it would be! We had the Tomahawk with Mac and Cheese. Incredible! We travel all over and seek out places that offer Tomahawk. This is definitely at the top of my list! You could feed 3 people with this one. The roasted garlic gave it that sweet garlic flavor. You have to have this if you are a Tomahawk fan.
Excellent overall experience. Great service. Excellent steak, appetizers and sides. Near ambiance being in old bank including vault space. Went to an early dinner before a show on Broadway. Easy walking distance to Broadway theaters. Highly recommend!
Great, as always. We love the speakeasy vibe of this place. Everyone was wonderful, accommodating, and just plain nice. Food was fantastic as always! Can’t wait to go back. Our server was top notch, and Dave and Jalena were delightful.
I am very sad to say but this was the worst meal I have ever had. The steak was over cooked and the mashed potatoes had no flavor. When I told the waitress about the steak she was very rude to me and said that it can happen that your steak is over cooked when ordering medium well. I have never had the problem. I also didn’t feel like I was able to just sit and enjoy. Overall I would not recommend this place to anyone
Amazing food. Fabulous ambiance. Kind staff. Food is absolutely worth the price!
It was my first time there, but it won’t be my last. Everything was wonderful and food exceptional. Friendly staff, great menu from drinks to dessert!!
Was not disappointment by anything.. great food, great service, and interesting atmosphere
The service was very good. The food was just ok for the money they charge (we go to high-end restaurants all the time). Our Kids would not even eat the Mac and Cheese, which never happens. I ordered the filet mignon and the cut was not that good, also it was not cooked how I asked.
Great service and food!
food was ok seems like there are better classic steakhouses in the area but the location and the interior is really cool
Not bad, but not necessarily worth it
Just wow - the steak was incredible. My partner had the new York strip and it was cooked to perfection and so tasty.
Friendly staff who advised us on cuts of meat and wine, and in a beautiful setting in the old bank vault under the New Yorker hotel.
Would 100% recommend and we’d definitely return.
Holiday business dinner
The location is very convenient for travelers! If you’re looking for great food close to MSG or Penn-station, this is a great pick! We loved the uniqueness of dining in a bank vault. Everyone commented that their food was amazing. I will definitely go back!
First time and definitely a repeat. I was wonderful dining before a concert at MSG, perfect location. They have a nice/different assortment from other steak houses. It is an interesting location. The food and service was wonderful.
Overall experience was nice. Food and service was good. The best part was the ambiance and drinks.
Meal and service very good
Very nice ambiance. Delicious food and
profession service. Classic cocktails served in lovely stemware. A hidden gem near MSG.
Love the atmosphere of the old bank. Food and service were great
Good meal well cooked as requested. Wine list could be deeper and more diverse.
They completely ignored my note on Open Table that this was for a b-day. But the manager said he’d make it up on my next trip there. Misleading ad that you eat in the vault. Food was excellent despite too much 80’s music.
