Originally built in 1832 as the Cross Keys Hotel we have been serving the locals of Blaenavon and beyond for almost 200 years.

We are well known across South Wales for our award winning Welsh black steaks which are locally sourced by our local butcher Bromfield's. We always use local produce to support local farmers, suppliers and producers.

Its was our 4th time dining with yourselves and each time as been perfect..the service the staff the experience is beyond amazing have recommended to all my family and friends..well and for the food out of this world. Definatly be back for our 3rd valentines meal and an other occasion..just simply fabulous thank you ever so much

Completely overbooked, left staff short and customer service suffered because of it. Took them ages to take our drinks order, then ages to bring the drinks, then ages to take the meal order. After that they moved us from our table to fit larger groups in, which in turn led to us being forgotten by the staff who were now concentrating on the larger tables. Another couple were actually moved into our old table and then 5 mins later were moved back to their original table. Food is ok, good quality, it’s well cooked but it’s not amazing like I had been led to believe and a bit expensive for what it was. We had booked 3 months in advance and then to be shifted around the place and forgotten about wasn’t really acceptable. If I was the owner, I’d throw away some tables to prevent yourself getting over booked, because as nice as the profit is for that night, the truth is, it’s cost you some returning customers.

Perfectly cooked roast beef. Moist and tender and flavourful. The gravy was amazing. Very good service from staff. Generous portions. We had the 3 course festive set menu at £30 per person. I struggled to finish my main! Had to take the desert home. Would have been nice if there was a children option with smaller portions. There was no way our children 8 and 16 could have eaten all the food. Nice surprised service charge was not by default on bill I like a lot of establishments in Cardiff. I prefer it that way as I prefer to give gratuities in cash. (More for staff less for HMRC) Seating was roomy. Was not too packed in like some places we been too. Lovely relaxing family atmosphere. Nicely decorated for Christmas. Good selection of beers on tap. Apparently the hot chocolate was the best. Felt like a friendly country pub rather than a posh city restaurant. Glad we booked months in advance, it was very busy. Parking was ok. Plenty of free parking on surrounding residential roads. Worth travel 1 hour to get to this establishment.

Me and the mrs had the butchers block and it was fab Lovely sides with it and triple cooked chips was on point Wasn't fussed on the lamb chops on it is the only slight negative but overall amazing Lovely staff and staff cannot do enough for you with friendly smiles all round

Came to the butterflies for a birthday meal,probably my 4th visit. 4 of us, two had turkey dinners and two of us shared the mixed grill sharing platter. The ladies really enjoyed the turkey dinners and we were blown about my the quantity and quality of the sharing platter, excellent meats, plenty of them, cooked perfectly. 10/10. table service was excellent and staff were pleasant and chatty. Overall, excellent value for money with a happy service, would recommend and will defiantly be coming again

Our 5th time eating at butterflies and can honestly say it gets better every time! Unbelievable food, fast service and lovely staff. Really enjoy coming and looking forward to our next visit :)

Not enough vegan options on the menu and the ones that are on offer are very lazy and seems as if they're just on the menu to tick a box. Too much animal flesh on the menu and not enough cruelty free food.

At first they took us to a table in the back room that was impossible to get into our seats, as a large table was pushed up against it. We are both large I said we can't get in there. I saw a few tables for 2 in the bar area and asked please could we go there, confused why we weren't put there in the first place as we stayed ages and it wasn't booked ? As we were planning on treating ourselves to a £70 steak treat disappointed we were getting a decent size table. Food and service was amazing as usual.

Excellent food. The reputation of this restaurant is well earned. If I was picky I’d say I’d like all the desserts on the menu to be home made.

Been waiting a long time to get a booking here. Well worth the wait. The staff were very friendly, attentive and helpful. Good selection of draught beers. The food was very good indeed and the portion size was excellent. Will definitely return.

Booked for my 50 th birthday with close family , when we arrived we were told couldn’t take our orders for a bit as chef was backed up . We waited half hour before giving orders . Food arrived quickly and was amazing , although children did not like burgers as too spicy for them , mabey having a menu option for children would be a good idea in addition to normal menu , doesn’t have to be plain nuggets ect . Food wasn’t cheap and well worth the price , but wasted on my 2 children as too spicy. All in all would definitely return without teenagers 😁very noisy in back room everyone speaking louder to be heard by own tables companions x

Was very busy when we went with two large tablets but still the food service and quality of everything was excellent. We had the steak experience and it was well worth the money, we even got to take some home. Will definitely be recommending and visiting again. Thank you!

No parking No cloakroom for coats. Wet coats on the back of your chair. There is a bar but nowhere to sit so don't arrive early (unlikely as you'll be looking for parking in the narrow, already congested side streets) Chef refuses to cook lamb to customer taste so it is mostly raw. Some parts are pink which I assume is how he would like to think it is all the way through the cut, unfortunately it's not. £200 for a meal for 4. Won't go again and don't recommend.

The ambience was perfect with the fire lit, the staff were amazing, so welcoming and friendly. The food was outstanding, we had the surf and turf. The best dinning experience ever♥️

The most beautiful meals for miles. If you love good food, you can't go wrong. I recommend you book a table and enjoy the beautiful cuisine in this hidden gem. Tucked away in a quiet valley is one of Wales's best kept secrets.

Well the reviews are the true - well worth the drive from Cardiff to go and see what all you fuss is about! The food was top notch and generous portions. I had the prawns to start and my friend had the tomato/ goats cheese starter followed by the Chateaubriand for 2, all of which was superb. I cannot stress enough how good this place was and this can be backed up by the wait time to get a reservation on weekends. No wonder people travel from all over the place to go there are is is a local gem. We will be back soon!
