Always enjoy Hugh Acheson's establishments and this one does not disappoint. By George does a wonderful job displaying classical French cuisine in a beautiful dining venue. Lots of wonderful options to choose from, thoroughly enjoyed our experience.
Overall very good, just a few specifics. I had read the reviews complaining of service and wait time issues previous to our visit so i wanted to be sure to counteract that as much as possible. New restaurants always have growing pains, it happens not a big deal.
We had an 8:30 reservation. We were at the bar grabbing drinks at 6:30 and confirmed with the hostess that they had our booking for later that night. We had several drinks at the bar which were absolutely wonderful and our bartender was knowledgeable and friendly.
We then went up to our room to get ready for dinner. We came back down at 8:20 and was told by the hostess that the waiters were a bit overwhelmed if we wouldn’t mind waiting at the bar, maybe 20 more mins past our reservation. No problem. Got another round, again delicious. They were definitely getting very busy and I could tell the staff was trying but the poor hostess was having a hard time delegating. Two different groups game in without a reservation after us and when they kind of pushed and complained about having to wait, she caved and sat them anyway.
I waited till 9:15 then went back over to ask her, it was evident that she still didn’t really have us a table but she sat us anyway. We wanted 15 mins for a waiter to come over... but again they were clearly busy. But once she came over everything was fabulous.
The clams were to die for and everything we had was very good and we’ll timed. Not too far apart, etc. she was a good server and we were pleased. The atmosphere was cozy and nice. Overall a very nice restaurant. I think the true struggle their having is understaffing/ inexperienced staff. But like I said they were definitely trying and I believe it will improve as time goes on.
If your flexible and not in a hurry a great place to check out. Might have the best luck sitting/ eating at the bar, they were very on top of things the whole time.
Our experience was mixed. The restaurant is gorgeous, and we love the way it looks so elegantly out over Peachtree Street. But the service had issues. We were seated 20 minutes late for our reservation time. After taking our order, our waiter pretty much ignored us until he came back around at the end of the meal wanting to know if we wanted to see the dessert menu. As for the food, the cocktails and appetizers were outstanding. The entrees and sides were good, not not extraordinary. We'll give By George another chance, because we love the idea of a destination restaurant in the prow of the Candler Building, but our first experience wasn't what it could have been. I chose the Yes button, but if there had been a Maybe button, I would have chosen that.
Comically chaotic service. Took 3.5 hours to get through our meal. A few of our table’s drinks took 15 minutes to arrive, the rest took yet another ten minutes. Everything followed suit from there. Impossible to get anyone’s attention for water. Soups, salads and entrees all arrived at the same time, and then servers realized we had no silverware. A water boy scrounged up a few forks but not enough for everyone (and no knives for the steaks). Waiter finally appeared and ceremoniously pushed forks and spoons INTO each of the dishes. He did not reappear until it was time to clear the table, so we were never able to get much-needed salt and pepper. Kitchen manager came up to apologize for the delay and generously offered us free desserts. These arrived 30 minutes later.
The team does not appear to have been trained.
The space is cool, the hotel looks great, but bad service and average food would not cause us to return or recommend By George.
I really like this restaurant. Great service food was delicious and The French inspired dishes were wonderful. Thanks to a wonderful Birthday weekend
And overnight stay in the Candler Hotel. Highly recommend this restaurant and beautiful hotel
Food was not great for being a Prix fixe meal. Very salty and very slow. May have been better with other options to choose from.
Surprisingly the restaurant had a 730 available on Valentine’s Day so we booked it. We were both excited to try out the menu since we had heard good things from friends. When we are seated, we are given the fixed menu for the evening. At no point was I told it was a set menu for the evening or frankly we would have gone elsewhere. Maybe that is why the place was less than half full. Our server told us that everyone was supposed to have gotten a call about the menu but we never did. What we had was good, but none of it was what we were actually wanting that evening. Staff seemed slightly overwhelmed again with a half full space, but our server was very nice. Cocktails were very good! Not sure that we’ll go out of our way to try it again.
I planned a Valentine’s lunch with my wife and By George, mainly because I was curious to see the newly opened Candler Hotel. with Hugh Acheson as the Chef, what could go wrong? Well, to start on a positive note - the food was good. But that is where the positives end. Because the service was so terrible that it completely spoiled our lunch. The server was flustered at best and really seemed to have no clue what she was doing. Deserts were not available, but then showed up at the table anyway. There was a breakfast item on the receipt from a previous guest (?), the receipt had the wrong amount (twice) and in the end the tip was just included even though at that point I was ready to give no tip at all. Servers also did not seem to understand which tables they covered and the wait was long even though there were only a few people having lunch. And it wasn’t that the restaurant had only been open for a week or so... All very unfortunate because the hotel was beautifully restored and Hugh Acheson does have a good name (to uphold).
It is the perfect place to treat yourself and guests to class and elegance.
Pleasant enough business lunch. However, with only 5 tables with diners, it was a bit chocking that it took over 10 minutes for our server to make an appearance.
Food was ok. I had the Niçoise salad and while an interesting take, it lacked flavor altogether. Coworker enjoyed her pasta but then again she might have been just being nice.
All in all - lovely decor. Food was rather ordinary.
Angel was fantastic! Manager stopped to check on us. Not to mention the ambiance, design and curation of the restaurant is top notch. We initially had delicious Steak Tartare, had our minds set on something else until the Burger (yes, burger) passed by and switching our order was the best decision of the week. Bravo By George and welcome downtown!
I wasn't amazingly impressed with the food, as I had extremely high expectations from Chef Hugh Acheson. The service was very nice and friendly. The space is beautiful.
This is the only dining experience where the service was so bad, we had to leave. About 2.5 hrs after being seated, we still had no entrees. And the restaurant was only half full.
-Cocktails were excellent!
-took 1 hour to get served our salad course. The waiter also inaccurately describes the item I ordered.
-the waiter forgot to put in our entree orders. We had figured this out by 9pm—2 hours after being seated.
-the manager came to apologize, and promised to have our entrees out in 15 minutes
-the waiter came back to confirm our order, and got it wrong again (!?!?!)
-at this point, it was 9:30 and we left. We were not charged for our drinks and appetizers (nor should we have been).
-we walked to a nearby restaurant to finish our dinner, which we were promptly served and ate .
I have never had to leave a restaurant in my life. Hugely disappointed by this restaurant, especially since we are Hugh Acheson fans.
We went on a Friday evening and it looked like the restaurant had gotten slammed -- maybe a lot of people showed up without reservations? In any event, the staff and kitchen seemed overwhelmed and though the servers were trying, the overall service suffered. Here's where being a hotel restaurant is a definite drawback - if the hotel or its lobby is too crowded, the restaurant experience declines. This place has potential and is definitely the best dining option downtown. We'll be back and hope for a better experience.
The restaurant was beautiful. The cocktails were great. The appetizers were wonderful. I had the escargot my friend has the Blue crab. However for the entree we had the Steak Diane and it was not good. The sauce was way to much along with all the herbs. The Dauphin potatoes were good and the spaghetti squash was was amazing. My big complaint was how loud it was. There were only about four tables in the dining room and the bar was somewhat busy but it was still really loud.
We arrived at 7:00 for our reserved time. We did not eat until 8:45. The waitress was very knowledgeable and nice, we were just disappointed in the wait. And it was not crowded at all. Overpriced for the overall experience.
Great experience. Excellent food. It’s fun to have servers with heavy southern accents who are so well versed in French food!
From the moment you walk into By George you know you are in for something special. It is a beautiful space! Our server Teal was wonderful and hopefully we will have her every time we visit this restaurant! She was so friendly and knowledgeable and fun! The chef was just amazing. We all loved everything. At one point I wished I could lick the plate! This chef came in recently and overhauled the menu to something excellent. I hope he remains there for a long time! Everything was wonderful! Run, don't walk to By George! You will not regret it!
Nice location in downtown Atlanta. Worked well for a business breakfast.
We had canceled reservations at Bones for a birthday dinner to try By George instead, even with the very mixed reviews. Well, By George is no where in the class and quality of food of Bones, Aria, Bacchanalia or Atlas. The space is beautiful but comes off as very cold, with the marble columns, undraped, cold-looking windows and absence of tablecloths. I can’t complain about the food, even though the menu is very limited. With all the previous reviews stating how bad the service was, you’d think it would have improved by now. Nope. Our waitperson was very spotty in her service and attention to us. We asked her if they had raw sugar for our cappuccinos. She assured us they had and then never brought it to us. We had also had her plug-in our cell phone when we arrived, which she did. At the end of the evening, we asked her to retrieve it so we could call Uber. Once again she forgot and started doing other things instead. My guest and I both agreed that there are far better restaurants in Atlanta and would not return. Sad.
Fantastic cocktails, especially the Airbus, and lots of really delicious starters and small plates. The service was very professional and attentive and extremely accommodating. By George offers a grown-up dining experience which is becoming all too uncommon in Atlanta. I’d recommend it.
Beautiful space- food delicious. Service was a little slow- but would be willing to give it another try.
Amazing food. Service has a lot of room for improvement. Don’t know if we had a new server, or they were working out kitchen issues... But will definitely go back
Service started off energetic, but fizzled off. I guess our server got busy. Bread was very good. I was disappointed, my dish was over cooked.
We started off with cocktails (I highly recommend the Candler) and then shared the clams (an excellent fennel-based broth) and crab with celeriac appetizers. Moved on to the special soup of the evening (lobster bisque with caviar) and the vichyssoise. For our main course, we shared the pot-au-feu (enjoyed this very much but the parsnips needed to cook a little more). And, crème brûlée with shortbread for dessert. Food was outstanding but service was a little lacking (timing of courses; extra plates for sharing; and the attentiveness of our server). The Candler Hotel is gorgeous and we will be back.
Food and staff were both great. Highly recommended that you dine here soon!
My guests and I provided all of our comments, both good and bad, to the MOD. He was receptive to them. He offered to comp our desserts for the troubles encountered during our dining experience. However, again, another misstep on the server's part, and we paid for the desserts. Our initial intention in booking the restaurant was to enjoy the historical building, enjoy the French menu and celebrate a special occasion. In actuality, we ended up spending a large sum of money for a very uneven experience . Too many amateur issues that were not of the calibre this restaurant aspires to. I don't choose a restaurant to conspire to have the meal comped-I hope to return when the multitude of small messy distractions are corrected. The restaurant has potential -it's just not up to each diner to make that happen through trial and error.
As you soon as you walk into this beautiful hotel, you know you're in for a treat. There are gorgeous marble pillars and beautiful furniture. The restaurant has a wonderful ambiance. Now in all honesty, they are still working through their service issues so you'll need some patience to navigate the slow service. They more than make up for it with the incredible food that is coming out of that kitchen. The steak Diane was beyond good. We also had pate wrapped in puff pastry which was again so good. Overall, this is a good date night pick if you've got some time to spare.
Great food, great atmosphere, great service. All around superb experience!
Joshua took great care of us great waiter! Excellent food and beautiful and elegant atmosphere!
The food was outstanding and the environment and decor is incredibly well done.
I was hoping for a wonderful experience. I had heard good things. The building and decor is gorgeous. The service was horrendous. I ended up leaving half way through lunch in compete frustration. I don't think I have ever done that before.
Full disclosure: I own a restaurant. While it is not a fine dining restaurant, we offer farm fresh ingredients that are made fresh daily. If I saw one of my servers ignoring a table the way we were ignored, I would fire them. There were three tables in the restaurant while we were there and at least two servers. Pitiful.
By George is still working out some of the kinks that come with opening a new restaurant, but we still enjoyed a good meal and good service. I look forward to trying them again in the future.
Service was very slow but wait staff thanked us for our patience. Entrees were undercooked but some sides were delicious. Beautiful hotel and lovely ambiance.
Exceptional service but the food was very bland and not worth the hefty price .
You have to go into your reservation knowing that service will be slow. We went for lunch and there were maybe a dozen other diners but a 3 course lunch still took 1hr & 20 mins. Service was very good on the drag level and the food was wonderful. Save room for dessert as the pastry chef is amazing
This restaurant has been such an unexpected surprise! I’m a guest at the hotel so I decided to try it my first night in Atlanta! OMG! It was fabulous - gorgeous ambiance and a very professional and friendly staff! My dinner was totally first class starting with an amazingly fresh chicory salad! My main course of salmon melted in my mouth and the lentil side dish was simply perfection! I spent 2 weeks a year in downtown Atlanta and this restaurant is heads above all the others I tried - not even close! So I must confess, I have now eaten here 4 nights in a row! My servers, Teele , Karen, Char and Myeesha were exceptional. BY GEORGE is a delicious treat!
Food was superb and our server Shar was fabulous. She was knowledgeable, friendly, professional and had a great sense of humor.
A great room with delicious food and drinks. Acoustics are a bit loud, and the wait staff needs a little training. Our waitress was new, and although she tried really hard, she was a little off. Will visit again.
The food is excellent, if pricey. We came on a busy night and unfortunately the place was kind of chaotic and the service was poor. Our server was nice and knowledgeable, and took our orders in a reasonable amount of time. Then things broke down. Long long waits for each course - so long that two hostesses had to come over to apologize, though they didn't do anything to make it right. Table next to us was seated after us but had eaten and paid the bill before we even received our entrees. Empty plates sat on our table forever before we could finally flag someone down to bring our check. I hope they can work out the service kinks - I probably won't be back for awhile.
