I feel that the people running it have their hearts in the right place, but if they keep on the way they are, it is likely to go under. Place was nearly empty on Saturday night. The service was very attentive and the waitress was a really nice kid, but she did a lot of apologizing. The menu had a thing or two that wasn't available, the wine list the waitress had put blue marker dots beside the ones they did actually have, the dessert menu had items crossed out. So, the food. Bread was toasty warm, butter was whipped up with a bit of garlic, very nice. Everything else took a LONG time to arrive. French onion soup was . . . OK. Years ago when I came here, the French onion soup was the best I ever tasted--classic French style, deep, dark broth overflowing with flavour. This time the broth was just OK, plus they'd added a bit of spice to it or something so it didn't really taste like proper French onion soup. The bread on top was a bit short of cheese and was crispy at the edges, so it was hard to eat. Main course was . . . OK. I had the Carthage Couscous, which had chicken, house made sausage, and was supposed to have lamb shank but they didn't have lamb shank so they substituted some lamb chop. When it was served there was couscous, with a mound of vegetables on top and then the meat on top of that. The chicken was good, falling apart; the sausage wasn't really to my taste; the lamb chop was tough. The vegetables were vastly overcooked, turning to slush. Spicing was OK. The couscous was fine I guess. My wife had grilled salmon; it came with some rice and some vegetables. She said the salmon was fine, but the sauce on it actually detracted from it, while the vegetables were badly overdone and the rice was dry. Desserts were good. It wasn't terrible, but competition is tough in this city. It felt like they were amateurs, and struggling to make ends meet, and if you want to succeed you can't let the customers SEE that.

We went to Carthage because the place we booked earlier could not accommodate us. The restaurant looked cozy and warm. Even though they were having some issues that night (the chef was temporarily away due to an emergency), the waitress made us feel welcome. She was upfront about the kitchen situation but soon we saw extra people coming in to help. We ordered 3 different couscous which were all very flavourful and deliciously cooked. Our favorite was the Carthage, a mix of lamb, merguez sausages and chicken. We also had the grilled salmon that was also delicious. We really liked the ambiance and being at Carthage made us feel like we were in a fancy romantic place far away from Vancouver! We would definitely like to go back and we recommend you to try this hidden gem.

The food is very good. However we were waiting for 1 hour to get our food. Don’t know if it’s because they change the owner or what. If you aren’t in rush. Definitely go try it. If you’re not very patient like me. Do not recommended.

Family run pleasant place with little or no effort to pretend that the restaurant is “fine dining” anymore. Mom and dad are talking loudly in the back watching television louder than the ambient music tracks - while the kindly daughter tries to manage the front of house - we were the only customers on a sleepy Tuesday night and food was tasty but not fresh, and service was kindly but not mindful.

We booked for an early dinner which turned out to be excellent food. The restaurant was quiet which was nice and the service was great.

Delighted that this neighborhood favourite has re-opened. The chicken tagine and lamb couscous were both fantastic.

We remember Carthage from its pre-pandemic time. The food and service now is abysmal. The person who appeared as owner was friendly, but that could not compensate for the poor food quality and the awkward and unprofessional service.

Server was on her 3rd day on the job and likely first time working at a restaurant. Everything was a challenge for her. If the restaurant wasn't empty, it would have been a long night for all concerned. We've been to this restaurant a few times before and enjoyed it. Not this time.

The restaurant was extremely hot and there is no air-conditioning or fan system. The food was very hit and miss: great salad, poor mussels. Good couscous, very poorly done steak. We were charged $12.00 for a “glass” of wine (no oz is listed on the menu, but an industry standard glass is 8oz), but the pour was 4 oz. and the white wine was not chilled. Service was alright - if a bit stoic. We won’t be going back.

Nothing to do with the old Cafe Carthage that used to be at this same location years ago. Same menu, sadly everything else is different.

Two of the people in our party had eaten at Carthage before & highly recommended it. We understand ALL restaurants are having staffing issues. Arrived at noon, only patrons the whole 2 hours. Very slow kitchen output. None of the food was served at the same time. Couscous & veg came close to an hour after ordered. Mussels serve without frites, waitress & kitchen had to be reminded. Appetizers described by waitress as small were actually quite large so we over ordered. Tasty enough but scallop & prawn appetizers tough, over cooked. Have seen online that original chef has left, might somewhat explain deficiencies.
