Very impressed with the service, the manager was very attentive to us and the waitress was very good. I’ve been to this restaurant before but this visit the food was very fresh and the tacos had plenty of fillings unlike in the past. I now will definitely be back and recommend to all my friends and family.
Food wasn’t the best here and very loud on fridays can’t hear your friends at all
The food was amazing and the service was fantastic. Our server Kylie was excellent. Thanks for making a great date night for my wife and I
First time there. I loved it. Tasty food and beverages
The food was amazing and I wish I could have given our tip solely to the kitchen and bar. So bravo. The service was meagre. Our server was attentive if we asked but didn’t bring our drinks in a timely matter, we could see them sitting at the bar. At one point I just grabbed my own drink from the bartender. We asked for no cilantro and our food came with cilantro. Also, if someone asks for no cilantro, usually restaurants will often say “our creama is full of cilantro would you like to try something else” but that didn’t happen here.
We will for sure be back as the food was amazing! Hopefully the training can improve for the servers so more people don’t get frustrated and not return.
Guacamole is amazing and the tacos were outstanding! We'll definitely be back!
Casual dining. Small but tasty tacos. My wife had tostadas which she said were great. Some of the staff new and didn't know drink menus.
The food was good…discovered things we liked and didn’t like (personal choices). The house marg was awesome. There was a table next to us that was quite loud….made it hard to talk. But otherwise, great experience.
Great tacos and margaritas. A bit loud and it wouldn't have hurt if one of the TVs showed the women's hockey gold medal game
Great atmosphere! Our server was very attentive and friendly. We enjoyed the happy hour tacos and margaritas. Will definitely be back in the future!!
Great food! Super reasonable prices. Will be back for sure!
For a Mexican restaurant to serve pre bag guacamole was super disappointing. Drink was not bad. I don’t think we will return. The pork taco was also so dry.
Great Mexican food. Awesome fish tacos! Great selection. Only weird thing is you can’t get a burrito after 3pm! What’s with that?!? We asked and waitress said no one will answer that question in the kitchen. Weird!
We went mid day on a Monday, so the restaurant was very quiet. Good service. Food was yummy, but don’t really love the menu and how it’s laid out. Would prefer meal selections rather than individual items. Also, during a time of COVID, not sure it’s reasonable to put everyone’s tacos on the same platter - made impossible to grab your food without touching anyone else’s. Probably could’ve asked for separate plates, but wasn’t aware it would actually arrive this way as I would have hoped for more common sense. Overall was $115 (incl tip) for 3 of us. Little much for a lunch. Was good but wouldn’t travel to go back.
I wanted to love this place. I tried twice now, one brunch and one lunch. Basically, they just aren't getting it right. The flavours, the ratios, the service. All just meh. I had the burrito for lunch and the pork was just salt. Nothing beyond salt. Nothing else had any flavour at all either. Where were the refried beans? Pico? I could see some other ingredients but the salty pork was overwhelming anything that might have been there. Service was the same lovely young lady as the brunch date. She was sweet but mostly absent. Definitely not on the ball. The place wasn't that busy. We shouldn't have to chase her down for more water. So I am sad to say that Calaverna will not get my business again. Twice I came from the NE to check it out and that's enough. I miss Mexico. I crave Mexico. I need Mexican food in my life. This isn't it. Sorry, Calaverna.
Happy hour tacos are definitely worth it! Also the margaritas. Otherwise would not go at full price times.
Went on a Tuesday, the place is not busy. Ordered 4 margaritas, all different flavor, all too sweet. Ordered 4 kinds of tacos, chorizo and beef were very salty, seafood ones are decent. Also forgot our order of chicharron. They were apologetic and gave it for free.
Generally speaking I enjoyed my visit. The portions were small but so was the price. The flavours were nice but with my brunch tostada the chorizo overwhelmed any other flavour. I saw a bit of black bean. I read there was some cheese but both had no presence in the dish. I wish I had known my decaf coffee was a french press because although that's a nice touch, I tend to want more than one cup. The service was friendly but sparse. I would try this place again because I love Mexican food and it's hard to find good flavours in Calgary but based on this experience alone, I won't hold my breath.
Really bad experience. I took some friends and we were all disappointed. We are not going back there or recommend this place to anyone!
We didn’t know much about Mexican food. We asked our waiter and he was very knowledgeable and told us the difference between their tacos and cantinas (tacos less meat, cantinas a lot more meat) Food, service, drinks were all exceptional. Will defiantly go back. Only con is that the price of their margaritas is a bit expensive for what you get.
I hope they can make this work...great concept and much needed in this part of town. The menu could use some variety...we had two types of tacos but they tasted the same. Both were deep fried with same crema . Would have liked to see something more “fresh”. Appetizer prawns were expensive for what you got and the Chile sauce was very heavy. Drink menus and drinks very very good.
Service was good and attentive. Was a bit noisy due to open concept.
I will go back but hope to see some changes to the menu...Mexican be be so good when flavours are bright and fresh.
The servers are serious lacking in experience. I’ve been twice and both times it was a bit painful
First time experience and felt the food was really good and fresh tasting. A bit pricey. For 3 adults and one kid, the bill was $160. Still, I’d venture back again.
In all fairness when your used to paying Mexico prices for Mexican food we were kinda harsh on our first opinions but the food in itself was good. The drink prices were horribly expensive and the service was not were I’d like. They were out of a few options which was weird as pretty common choices. What Mexican restaurant doesn’t have fajitas or quesadillas and burritos only midday?
Shrimp tacos not great. Too much breading- couldn’t taste the shrimp. Churros too greasy.
Service was not great, we sat outside on the patio and we’re seated with no menus, we had to ask for a menu, and the server asked for or dinner order before we had our drinks. The music was really loud, felt more like a bar rather then a restaurant. Food was just ok, nothing too exciting.
Cute new place on south trail. Food pretty good. Fun atmosphere. Music was fun and not too loud. Wait staff lovely. Outdoor patio. Very casual atmosphere
It was amazing we always go back!!
Need to make some minor improvements with service to make it a great establishment. Having recently been to a couple other Mexican restaurants in town, Calavera Cantina felt short on my expectations compared to the quality and service levels I received at the other places. I will go back but will have to lessen expectations for just an average location to receive decent tacos.
Below are a few places where improvements could be made.
- took 15 mins for anyone to ask us if we wanted starters or a drink upon being sat down. Ended up just placing our complete order.
- when plate of tacos were delivered no one explained what each one was. A great experience would be for the servers to explain the selection of tacos.
- upon placing our complete order, drinks were the last item to be received. We are our appetizer and half way through our tacos before drinks were delivered. Unacceptable.
- we would have ordered more drinks during our stay but didn’t seem like they wanted us to stay and enjoy ourselves. Decided to go home and make some more drinks instead.
- upon finishing our meal it took another 15 mins before waiter came back and asked us how the meal was. And then just asked if we wanted dessert. Didn’t even ask if we wanted more tacos or not.
From the time we were there till we left was 45 mins. With 30 mins of waiting at the front and back. Food came out quickly but not the enjoyable experience I was looking for.
Overall I think Calavera could be a much better experience but may reserve going back for awhile and enjoy some of the other Mexican places in town for now.
The servers were attentive and knew the menu very well. They were able to make great recommendations and describe the dishes in a way that made us confident with our orders. Food came out quickly and was good but a little pricey compared to some other Mexican places in town. They have a nice patio and the inside is bright and decorated nicely. I have been to Calavera several times and will not hesitate to return.
It happened to be all-day happy hour on the day we went for dinner. This was a nice surprise. The drinks and tacos were excellent, made all the better with a nice reduction in price. I recommend this place highly.
For our first visit, we were underwhelmed. We arrived for our 7:15 reservation at 7:09, and were told we needed to wait, as we were early. We were seated to an empty booth, no plates no cutlery, no glasses, even though we were made to wait to prepare a table. When our server brought water glasses, they came directly from the dishwasher making the water tepid at best. There was no explanation of the menu, drink or food,
No introduction and very littlecontavt at all. We had to get napkins our selves from the bar and when the appetizers arrived no plates were brought and when the entrees came we had ask for cutlery. The restaurant was not busy but we waited quite a while for the food. The most conversation from our server came as we were paying the bill. It wasnt horrible, and although there was mention on the reservation that we were celebrating an anniversary nothing was done to make the most of our evening..it wasnt memorable, which is such a shame!
The tacos were loaded but the flavors were not great. The stools were very uncomfortable and unfortunately where we were seated the sun was directly in your eyes.
Great service, delicious house margaritas, and excellent happy hour specials.
In all fairness we got up and left prior to ordering.
I would consider myself a very experienced critique of culinary arts, Resteraunt’s and all aspect of business management.
My review will limited much like their menu. So prior to booking your reservation make sure you are aware that you will pretty much get the choice of tacos, tacos or tacos. Don’t try to order the burritos as they stop serving that at 2pm.
I guess the evening kitchen staff can’t figure out how to put the filling into a 12 inch tortilla instead of a 4 inch tortilla used for tacos.
No soups, sides, fajitas, tortillas, Carne Asada or any other Mexican specialties aside from chips with salsa or guacamole.
Let me simplify my review. If you are looking to go for drinks and tacos and have no other food expectations then you may like this place. If you are looking for a real authentic Mexican meal then you may be disappointed.
What amazed me the most about our trip to this Resteraunt is the fact that it is being run by some very experienced, skilled and talented people who owned and operated some of Calgary’s best Resteraunt’s. This building is nice, prominent and in a great location however all prior businesses have failed here. Please feel free to reach out to me for complimentary assistance with the menu, recipes and marketing strategy.
Nice place. Patio looks great.
Came in during Happy Hour, and really enjoyed the fish tacos and churros! Good service and friendly staff. Nice ambience. Family friendly.
Very nice restaurant. Bar is in the center with the tables all around. Service was fast and friendly. Menu through the app is a little hard to read as you need to go back to the home page a few times. Miss the old printed menu pre covid. Nothing like going out with the wife and first thing you need to do is look at your phone for 10 minutes.
Heavy portions but generous for sharing. Maybe a little more refined would go a long way. Native tounge’s taco’s win for sure. I found several of the items from appies to mains utilize the same tomato sauce which made everything taste the same.
Sure nice to be able to go out again and feel free!!
We went for lunch - More specifically tacos and margaritas. Tried 5 different tacos and 2 different margaritas. Enjoyed the food and drink - Ingredients were fresh and there was lots of variety in both proteins and flavours to select from on the menu. Server was friendly and attentive. Overall a good experience. We will return.
Always awesome. Food and drinks were great. Our server was phenomenal (I wish I could remember her name)!
