Visited on a busy Friday night early December. Server was friendly but overall service was slow. Wasn’t offered water at any point even with empty drink glasses. Asked for more napkins but they never showed. Food was good but quantity and quality doesn’t match the high prices. Not enough Mexican dishes for a Mexican restaurant. Why are there 3 different burgers, $48 steak and pork chops on the menu but no traditional Mexican dishes. Music was much too loud for 6:30 - I know it’s Friday night but this is a family restaurant not a pub.
Servers were pushy to get you to leave early by taking you plates and bringing the bill after your last bite . Not great
We had a fun evening. The food was good especially the tres leche cake
We always have a great experience here. The staff is excellent and the food quality is amazing. They are constantly striving to improve on all fronts and they always succeed.
Great food, great drinks and great staff.
Excellent!! Love the new menu
Every dish had very similar flavours. I’m Latino, so it’s hard to find a resto that hits the spot.
Hi Wayne, Thank you very much for your feedback about your experience with us. We really appreciate your comments, and are happy to inform you that we have launched a brand new menu on Nov 30th. We have received a lot of great feedback over the past few months regarding flavor, and have invested the last 2 months into redoing our menu in what it offers, and the flavor profile. We hope you will consider giving us another chance. Sincerely, Rob Shevchenko Operations Manager - Starbelly Group
I heard they had good Birria tacos. I was sadly disappointed. Tacos were single-wrapped, not double. They fell apart very quickly. The only option for shells were flour. No corn available. The menu said burritos only available till 3 pm. What?
Service was less than acceptable. Didn't get cutlery till half way through the meal. Poor value for money.
Great service and food. We will be back. Tuna tostada is great and the margaritas worth trying. Friendly staff.
Was really excited to try out Calavera but it felt like it just missed the mark. When ordering we’re told that several menu items were out of stock and that they had ran out of forks as they were short staffed
Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to pass on the feedback from your experience. We apologize for the lack of silverware, and the items that you did not get to try, as this should never be acceptable in our restaurant. I assure you that these issues have been rectified, and encourage you to give us another try. We are relaunching a new menu on Nov 30th, that we hope you will consider experiencing in the weeks to come. Kind Regards, Rob Shevchenko Operations Manager - Starbelly Group
The food was ok at best and it was so cold every time the door opened I couldn’t take my jacket off. The atmosphere was really nice with the Mexican music playing though. Probably wouldn’t go back.
Hi there, Thank you for your comments on your experience. Your feedback is appreciated as we strive to provide a comfortable experience for everyone dining with us. This has been applied to our daily vibe awareness, and look forward to the potential opportunity of welcoming you back to try us again. Thank you again for your feedback. Tacos were delicious.
Guacamole lacked flavor
Chocolate tart was good
Churros were not good. Very heavy/oily and not hot.
Hi there, Thank you for your feedback on the guacamole and churros. We have recently changed our recipe as we work towards the relaunch of our new menu on November 30th. We are very excited with the flavor profile and presentation. I hope that you will give us another try in the next week or two. Thank you again for your feedback. Food was great, great service, drinks were on point. A little on the pricy side but would definitely recommend to anyone for a date night or any one looking for a fun meal out.
Loved our server ! She was funny and very attentive!
Food was amazing !
Good Mexican eats
The waitress Wasn’t the best she forgot a bunch of things and the cocktails took about 25 mins and it wasn’t that busy. But I do appreciate the food and try to support local
The jugs of margaritas are delish but they put too much ice in! Lol more tequila!
Food was amazing. Tip- order smaller amounts more frequently
Brilliant night, food is really authentic and the drinks are amazing!! Definitely be back soon
Not what we were expecting, and very expensive. My wife and I got 2 (very small) tacos each, some taco chips with salsa, and a couple of expensive yet mediocre drinks, and the bill came out to just over $75
It’s also like eating in a warehouse/cafeteria.
Great Mexican and fun atmosphere. Wish the music turned down a bit though as noise level on par with a dance club. Difficult to talk at table.
Very impressed with the service, the manager was very attentive to us and the waitress was very good. I’ve been to this restaurant before but this visit the food was very fresh and the tacos had plenty of fillings unlike in the past. I now will definitely be back and recommend to all my friends and family.
Food wasn’t the best here and very loud on fridays can’t hear your friends at all
The food was amazing and the service was fantastic. Our server Kylie was excellent. Thanks for making a great date night for my wife and I
First time there. I loved it. Tasty food and beverages
The food was amazing and I wish I could have given our tip solely to the kitchen and bar. So bravo. The service was meagre. Our server was attentive if we asked but didn’t bring our drinks in a timely matter, we could see them sitting at the bar. At one point I just grabbed my own drink from the bartender. We asked for no cilantro and our food came with cilantro. Also, if someone asks for no cilantro, usually restaurants will often say “our creama is full of cilantro would you like to try something else” but that didn’t happen here.
We will for sure be back as the food was amazing! Hopefully the training can improve for the servers so more people don’t get frustrated and not return.
Guacamole is amazing and the tacos were outstanding! We'll definitely be back!
Casual dining. Small but tasty tacos. My wife had tostadas which she said were great. Some of the staff new and didn't know drink menus.
The food was good…discovered things we liked and didn’t like (personal choices). The house marg was awesome. There was a table next to us that was quite loud….made it hard to talk. But otherwise, great experience.
Great tacos and margaritas. A bit loud and it wouldn't have hurt if one of the TVs showed the women's hockey gold medal game
Great atmosphere! Our server was very attentive and friendly. We enjoyed the happy hour tacos and margaritas. Will definitely be back in the future!!
Great food! Super reasonable prices. Will be back for sure!
For a Mexican restaurant to serve pre bag guacamole was super disappointing. Drink was not bad. I don’t think we will return. The pork taco was also so dry.
Great Mexican food. Awesome fish tacos! Great selection. Only weird thing is you can’t get a burrito after 3pm! What’s with that?!? We asked and waitress said no one will answer that question in the kitchen. Weird!
We went mid day on a Monday, so the restaurant was very quiet. Good service. Food was yummy, but don’t really love the menu and how it’s laid out. Would prefer meal selections rather than individual items. Also, during a time of COVID, not sure it’s reasonable to put everyone’s tacos on the same platter - made impossible to grab your food without touching anyone else’s. Probably could’ve asked for separate plates, but wasn’t aware it would actually arrive this way as I would have hoped for more common sense. Overall was $115 (incl tip) for 3 of us. Little much for a lunch. Was good but wouldn’t travel to go back.
I wanted to love this place. I tried twice now, one brunch and one lunch. Basically, they just aren't getting it right. The flavours, the ratios, the service. All just meh. I had the burrito for lunch and the pork was just salt. Nothing beyond salt. Nothing else had any flavour at all either. Where were the refried beans? Pico? I could see some other ingredients but the salty pork was overwhelming anything that might have been there. Service was the same lovely young lady as the brunch date. She was sweet but mostly absent. Definitely not on the ball. The place wasn't that busy. We shouldn't have to chase her down for more water. So I am sad to say that Calaverna will not get my business again. Twice I came from the NE to check it out and that's enough. I miss Mexico. I crave Mexico. I need Mexican food in my life. This isn't it. Sorry, Calaverna.
Happy hour tacos are definitely worth it! Also the margaritas. Otherwise would not go at full price times.
Went on a Tuesday, the place is not busy. Ordered 4 margaritas, all different flavor, all too sweet. Ordered 4 kinds of tacos, chorizo and beef were very salty, seafood ones are decent. Also forgot our order of chicharron. They were apologetic and gave it for free.
Generally speaking I enjoyed my visit. The portions were small but so was the price. The flavours were nice but with my brunch tostada the chorizo overwhelmed any other flavour. I saw a bit of black bean. I read there was some cheese but both had no presence in the dish. I wish I had known my decaf coffee was a french press because although that's a nice touch, I tend to want more than one cup. The service was friendly but sparse. I would try this place again because I love Mexican food and it's hard to find good flavours in Calgary but based on this experience alone, I won't hold my breath.
Really bad experience. I took some friends and we were all disappointed. We are not going back there or recommend this place to anyone!
We didn’t know much about Mexican food. We asked our waiter and he was very knowledgeable and told us the difference between their tacos and cantinas (tacos less meat, cantinas a lot more meat) Food, service, drinks were all exceptional. Will defiantly go back. Only con is that the price of their margaritas is a bit expensive for what you get.
I hope they can make this work...great concept and much needed in this part of town. The menu could use some variety...we had two types of tacos but they tasted the same. Both were deep fried with same crema . Would have liked to see something more “fresh”. Appetizer prawns were expensive for what you got and the Chile sauce was very heavy. Drink menus and drinks very very good.
Service was good and attentive. Was a bit noisy due to open concept.
I will go back but hope to see some changes to the menu...Mexican be be so good when flavours are bright and fresh.
