Tasting menu was beautifully presented. Flavours were so unique. The care taken and quality of every ingredient is evident. Service was exceptional. Wine list is beautiful and selections were perfect. The space is minimalist, but still warm and relaxed. Highly recommend.
Amazing meal. Had the 7 course tasting menu and there was not a course I would change. Fine dining but still casual .
Absolutely amazing... so delicious from start to finish... wine pairing perfect!!!
Best meal of the year. From the incredible food to the thoughtfulness of the menu and plates, this is hands down one of the best restaurants in Canada. Do the full menu. Worth every penny for the multiple foodgasms.
Amazing dining experience with fresh local ingredients, been meaning to go for a while and not disappointed despite my high expectations. Can't wait to visit again
Delightful dinner with knowledgeable staff. Very willing to answer all questions. Excellent food.
Excellent restaurant. The tasting menu was fantastic and very flavorful. Outstanding service. I would recommend this restaurant.
The chef was very accommodating and was able to create dishes for my guests with numerous food allergies and aversions. Service was great, and the food was delicious.
There wasn’t a dish I didn’t enjoy in the entire meal.
The most memorable dishes were the duck liver parfait (tart), halibut, duck, and the desserts.
Very creative menu and great flavors .The chef is taking you into a gustative tour and the presentations are simply pristine. The only downside is the service witch to my liking was hurried and not to the same level as the food . Servers serving plates from the left and passing in front of your face with plates explaining what, the chef created in a very hurried fashion with no passion . Food 9/10 service 5/10
Had a lovely time at Canis. My husband and I both had the 8 course menu. The rumours are true- the duck is the best I’ve had. Thought it a little odd that they only stock the bar with the liquor used in their very limited cocktail selection. No vodka but my negroni was delicious.
We tried the deliciously crafted long tasting menu and had a fantastic dinner! I would definitely recommend the counter seating... you still have privacy to hold a conversation, but truly get to appreciate the work that the chefs put into each plate.
The service was excellent. Food was avante garde and modern. Would happily go back again once they change there chef’s tasting menu
Amazing tasting menu
Friendly service for the most part, some staff very engaging and others a little flat. Food was nicely presented and served at a good pace, but we were not impressed with the flavour of some of the dishes (tuna course bland, short rib overdone). Wine pairings were ok. Had high expectations for a tasting menu of this calibre and price point, but we were not wowed. Won't be back.
Really good food. Interesting combinations of flavours. Beautiful presentation.
The staffs were very good as well.
Went there for my partner's birthday. We decided on the larger of the two tasting menus paired with the wine and had a phenomenal experience. The food from start to finish was incredible, the wines, something I know very little about, were a real treat. While it's certainly not somewhere you could eat everyday, not that they tout themselves as such, it is certainly worth a visit. I give my wholehearted endorsement to anyone who wants an immersive food and drink experience on a special occasion.
It's also worth noting that the staff were swift, gracious and attentive. It was all very efficient without feeling rushed in the slightest.
Excellent food, light, seasonal and flawlessly presented. Excellent value. Music was a little bit too loud, service could be a little bit better but was ok. Highly recommend.
The food was very unique, the food presentation also quite different. The service was flawless. There is no bar, they serve wine and beer only. The ambiance was a bit disappointing. The staircase to the ladies room in the basement needs urgent attention.
Overall, I found this place to be a bit of a mismatch - the ambiance fits a casual dinner, but the food and the bill is more appropriate for a special occasion. This is a onetime visit kind of restaurant to me.
Great food and variety of flavours, will definitely go again. A real treat!
This restaurant is the new Fine Dining. Gorgeous presentation and flavours. Helpful and attentive service. Without attitude. Can’t wait to return.
Nice restaurant, some of the dishes were very creative, couple dishes were very tasty, I will give an E as effort, but their main dishes were okay just okay, I don't think they will survive in the long run if they just have tasting menu and really have to work on their main dishes.
Amazing food and service !
Beautiful menu full of fresh, regional ingredients. Wonderful experience!
I love the use of local/seasonal plants in the dishes.
Sat at the counter so able to see all the things being made which was very entertaining. Some truly divine food came our way and the tastes bounced all around our mouths. My favourite dish was grilled tuna with maitake mushrooms -- my mouth starts watering remembering the depth of its taste when I type it -- my friend's favourite dish was asparagus, fresh cheese and ramps. So many of the dishes were so physically beautiful too. And the wine pairings were all interesting and very memorable/enjoyable.
My friend and I often have very different tastes, but we agreed that the last menu item (out of 12 different items) was an absolute dud (sunflower seeds and a non-spectacular chocolate) - up until then we had been in different degrees of bliss with every item served. It was followed by a non-menu item, a little sugared almond-y cake which was light and almondy and goopy in all the right amounts and should have been the last menu item, say with a black currant coulis .
The experience was an expensive one by my standards, but the price was very fair for what we experienced. I will return again when I can afford to and I am already excited by the prospect.
Excellent food and service and lovely tasting menu. Very expensive - which would not be a problem in there was some entrée choices as an alternative to a 7 course meal
We would highly recommend Canis to our food loving friends. My husband and I enjoyed the small tasting menu. Each serving was exciting with different flavours. Particular attention was given to presentation without sacrificing taste or over complicating the dish. We quite enjoyed the flavoured butter and ricotta brought before the actual tasting menu. The liver pate tart was just exquisite. The main dishes were varied and segued nicely and the two deserts brought the experience to a fulfilling finish. Particular mention to the attentive service. Everyone was pleasant and very informative of each dish. We were both very happy to have chosen Canis where to celebrate our anniversary. Thank you.
Wonderful tasting menu with good pescatarian options...delicious wine pairings...outstanding service
This restaurant exceeded expectations. Service was attentive, wine was outstanding and the food had a great balance of textures and flavors without being pretentious or outlandish. Will definitely return.
Canis came highly recommended by several food magazines, and it was a good restaurant. My wife and I felt that it was quite bright in the restaurant and that the way some of the dishes were served made the place feel too casual. The dishes were creative and the food tasted good, but the fact that we could clearly see into the kitchen and we the crates that were used for produce and shipping ingredients took away from the decor and ambience. The soundtrack was also trying too hard to be cool - it didn’t add anything to the experience.
For the next date night, there are other places that offer similar food level with better ambience and feel! Canis was good, but not great!
Really good food taste and presentation! Definitely worth the value!
Food was absolutely delicious. Service was remarkable. This is my third time here and I always leave with a full stomach and a smile. Will be back soon!
Fantastic as always :-)
Food was good, not exceptional as hoped. Small basic unflattering venue. seating is very tight and practically on top each other with little privacy, no candles or table settings. Service was no better then any average restaurant, had to ask several times to have water glasses refilled. Had the wine tasting as well which was under whelming, delivery was rushed and arrived after some of the dishes were already started. No co-ordination whatsoever. Rarely does a dinning experience rate as low in my mind, would not recommend and would never return. Bill was over $ 500.00 dollars and left hungry.
I'm a big fan of fine dining and make a point of visiting new and interesting restaurants when I'm away from home. So when I read about Canis in Toronto on Canada's 100 Best List, I was excited to see what they had to offer.
The restaurant was set up in a small unassuming space in Queen West. The decor was pretty basic and was in line with many of the other "up and coming" restaurants in Toronto. The FOH was likewise average and the service staff didn't seem to have the polish that one would expect at a nice / high-end restaurant offering a tasting menu.
By way of comparison, Maison Boulud in Montreal and Hawksworth in Vancouver both set high water marks for an exceptional high-end dining experience.
The food, by contrast, was excellent. Each course thoughtfully combined ingredients to achieve balance of flavors and textures, and it resulted in a very enjoyable meal. My only reservation in providing an outright endorsement is that they could put some more effort into the presentation.
Overall I enjoyed my dinner but I'm not sure that I would go back. I've visited Hawksworth and Maison Boulud dozens of times, and Canis doesn't sit at top of mind for me.
Great mail! Great atmosphere! Great service. Casual dress. Definitely recommend!
Fabulous food. Highly recommend wine pairing with full tasting menu.
Amazing. The flavour and taste were very strong. Each ingredient was brought out precisely. Some may find this too overwhelming. But if you put into the context that this has a strong Asian influence, then it will all make sense.
Definitely one of the best new restaurants in a Canada. In fact, it is one of the best in Canada.
Sumptuous from start to finish, very knowledgeable staff with endless enthusiasm for their product
