Canis Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Only improvement to management would be to put a curtain around the entrance to block cold air coming in as it does during the winter. During our visit, we had the four spot table right in the line of the doorway and the door opening had some moments of chill.
Found the restaurant via a Google search of best new restaurants in Toronto, and was not in the least disappointed. The food was beautiful to look at and even better to eat, with truly original and inventive takes on ubiquitous ingredients.
Amazing food and attentive service. Would for sure go again.
Fab service and even better food, easily the best meal I had in Toronto. Portions are on the small side, with is a relief after too many too-large plates. Only complaint is the noise level, which makes it tough to talk, even across the table...but people were having a great time, so it's hard to complain too much.
We really enjoyed our diner and we were very impressed with the service and the food. Our waitress, Sandra, was very knowledgeable and friendly!
Great tasting menu, good wine pairings as well. Service was spot on, very attentive and knowledgeable! The wine list could use some Champagne.
Food and atmosphere were both good and interesting preparation and plating. Honestly however, for being recently ranked #2 in Canada it didn't stand up to some of the other top restaurants in Toronto / Canada.
Great use of flavours and textures in all dishes. Fantastic ambiance and very attentive, knowledgeable service.
One of the very best in Toronto!
Contemporary, fine, seasonal cuisine in an intimate and casual setting. Service was attentive without being pretentious. Food was sophisticated and inventive without being contrived. One of the most delicious meals we've eaten in Toronto. Four course prix fixe, or 7 course tasting menu, so limited choices. Not recommended for strict vegetarians but as fish eaters (but no meat) we were able to enjoy a celebratory anniversary dinner. Definitely will go back in another season.
I came here with a couple of friends after passing the place by several times while in the neighbourhood and seeing it on a Best of Canada list. We had the 4 course menu and we were not dissapointed! The food was delicious, the atmosphere was relaxed and the open kitchen ran so smoothly. I will be going back again soon for a 7 course option!
Inspired cooking executed perfectly. Friendly service. Loved it!
Everything was perfect except for the food.. too salty for our taste.. and duck was too undercooked taste like raw poultry (I eat mid rare steak with no problem)
Fantastic meal. On par with the best in the city, including Alo, George, Scaramouche, etc.
A thoroughly amazing dining experience from start to finish!
The best meal I have had this year! Very knowledgeable and friendly staff with a superb culinary team. My only negative comment is that trips to the washroom take away from the overall experience, but in the end, the dining experience more than makes up for that. Bravo!!
The 7 course tasting menu was fantastic. It's was very well thought out and the duck breast was the best I have ever had. Good people at Canis! Thanks.
Excellent food and service. One of a handful of Toronto restaurants offering truly creative and sensational food.
The best meal I have ever had! The thought put into each dish from texture, to temperature, to contrasting flavours is unparalleled. A must go in Toronto!!
Not a single dish disappointed. Not one. It was the perfect blend of comfort and palate-pushing with the cohesiveness of a truly great culinary staff. There's not a lot I can say here because I enjoyed this so, so much. We were visiting Toronto from Philly and were looking for something we wouldn't find anywhere else. Canis was very reminiscent of some of the best elements of BYO culture in Philly (no one can get a liquor license so some of the most well-crafted menus and star chefs have 25 seat BYOs) but with a wine pairing menu that took the guess work out of the process. I'd recommend this place (and, again, every single dish on the menu) to anyone willing to put a little faith in a credible chef.
Went as a birthday gift for my wife. The food was by far some of the best we've had this year. The play of flavors and textures was artfully performed. The atmosphere was lively and the Staff were very knowledgable, friendly and attentive.
I had great expectations for Canis and its tasting menu and Prix fix menu. However, it has disappointed me quite a bit in terms of plating and creativity of its food. To be fair, the taste is not bad, but it just didn't impress us. Some of dishes are dull tasting.
We had high expectation for this restaurant after hearing review from a friend's friend.
So I booked the restaurant for my wife's birthday. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. However the food was a bit off from what we were expecting. The price was the same as Alo and we are not sure if it was the menu of the day that was off or what, maybe it was Asian influence in their food(Being Asian-Chinese). We weren't WOW-ed by the dishes. The overall food/experience was not close to what we experienced at Alo Restaurant.. We would likely not go back again.
The meal was very good. Every dish was tasty, and had good flavour and texture. Our waitress seemed a bit confused at times and was bringing wrong dish to tables, but she may be new.
Very good experience and a wonderful restaurant. Excellent staff and very well cared for. Courses well spaced out and a great way to relax and enjoy a meal. Sandra and the rest of the staff were very helpful and explained every course that was served to us.
Had a wonderful meal with my husband! We tried the prix fix, will definitely try the tasting next time. Highlights are: beef tartare, the duck confit, and lamb loin.
All courses excellent; service informed and engaged. Delightful all around. Must visit (but not when I want to. 😏
Amazing 4 course dinner!
Although quite under the radar Canis was very busy on a Wed night. Not surprised because it was excellent on all fronts from the bread service to the unusual but appropriately light and delicious dessert. Definitely recommend.
We spent $750 for small so-so items from the tasting menu. The downstairs smelled atrocious and the bathroom was disgusting. Trying to be high end but is not. Staff very nice but started cleaning with Lysol at 11:30 when we were still trying to enjoy our expensive wine. Toronto Life you are so wrong - this restaurant is not worth it.
Ausgezeichnete Produkte- kreativ verarbeitet.
Leider fehlt die asiatische Note oder ein besonderer Geschmack. Alles sehr neutral.
Preise- Leistung extrem positiv.
This restaurant was recommended and it did not disappoint. Did the seven course tasting menu with the wine pairing. Everything was fantastic and different. A memorable evening.
My review won't do Canis justice ... but I will try. Absolutely fantastic experience with probably the best tasting menu I've had in a few years. Supreme value at 85 per person. We opted for the wine-pairing and the selection matched up with the food very well for 60 per person. We dine out a lot and had similar dishes at other TOP restaurants in Toronto, but Canis does them two notches above all others. All the dishes were great, but highlight was the 30-day aged roasted duck .... just the duck alone is worth returning again, which we are doing in 2 weeks. Oh, service was excellent and non-pretentious. Must try.
Definitely one of the best restaurants in Toronto, if not the best at the moment.
The food was absolutely delicious, with very attentive service.
I loved every single course and it is hard to choose a favourite one, but maybe the duck. It was extremely tasty and perfectly cooked.
Will definitely go back.
Canis does prixe fix and a tasting menu. The prixe fix does come with options for each of the 4 courses. We selected the tasting menu with 7 courses. We enjoyed all 7 courses. The halibut had a wonderful smoky flavour . The short ribs was outstanding. It was fork tender yet had a pink centre, easily the highlight of our meal. Chef Kang personally served it. We hope that Chef will include it in the prixe fix meal as an option. On our short list as the best meal 2017.
Joanne Kates ( Globe and Mail food critic) gave this place a glowing review and she is never wrong. We had the Prix fixe menu and it was an excellent value. Much better than the usual Prix Fixe menus one would get at other restaurants. Creative and tasty offerings with a Scandinavian minimalist decor.
Some of the highlights include:
Pan Seared Halibut
Beef Tar Tar with tongue
Lamb cooked to perfection!
The best good I had in years!!!!! Gourmet without being pretentious. Every bite is a symphony and clean and complex taste. "Amazing" doesn't describe it well.
Excellent food, originality and service. Would highly recommend and would return.
Every course was amazing which is very difficult to say with all chef's table menu. We would eat there again.
Great food! Our meal was incredibly refreshing but still very complex. I was impressed how they blended the different flavours. The scallops, duck and halibut were outstanding. My only complaint would be the desserts, they were so-so. Looking forward to going back, Canis is one of TO's best restaurants.
