Toronto Life Magazine 2017 Best New Restaurants #5
Second time visiting - and it was even better than I remembered it. All of the courses were extremely well thought out, presented and cooked perfectly. A good amount of food to leave you pleasantly full. The service was fantastic- and the restaurant runs with amazing precision with courses arriving quickly. Wine pairings were fantastic complement to each course and enjoyed all 6 wines. Sommelier was extremely knowledgeable and has chosen wines that are unusual.
Great value tasting menu with lots of unexpected flavours. Managed to make a reservation on the same day we dined there. The counter seats are awesome and give a great view of the action in the kitchen. Their water is also really good.
The food was absolutely delicious and everything we expected after all that we had read about the restaurant. Everything was beautifully arranged and clearly each dish was designed with thought and care as the flavours came together so delicately and deliciously. However, for this price point we found the service a little too avant-garde for us. With three other couples arriving for the 8:30pm spot, the staff welcoming us appeared a little caught off guard. As we all tried to fit into the restaurant to keep the winter breeze out, we were each given the opportunity to pick our own table while also trying to avoid bumping into guests who were seated at the tables closest to the door. In addition, though the staff were generally lovely, and the restaurant wasn't too loud, it was extremely difficult catching everything the wait staff was introducing.
Therefore, though the food alone is definitely worth returning for, at this price point, there may be alternatives that may provide a better overall experience.
The menu was fantastic. Showcasing North American ingredients in an honest and creative way. Utilizing different fermentation techniques elevated each dish and created a unique dining experience.
This was a spectacular meal with lovely service and ambience. The restaurant is serene in decor and the staff are super knowledgeable and charming. There is a tasting menu which changes. They accommodated one in our party who does not eat seafood, bringing her a different but equally well thought out option when we had seafood courses. The brown butter dessert was the best (they served three!) and the tuna and duck middle courses were spectacular too - frankly each dish was wonderful. This is an incredible restaurant with gifted people in the kitchen.
We’ve been to canis a number of times now. Jeff and the team never fail to impress! What a gem of a restaurant.
Very great attention to detail. Much better than the pretentious French restaurant down the street (you know which one)! The chicken liver, although I’m not typically a fan, stood out. It had a very potent and distinct flavour complimented by the crusty tart it was presented on. 10/10 in my books and I’m a picky eater...
Good food excellent tasting menu!
Amazing! Every dish was very exceptional! Perfect tasting menu
The food was outstanding- perfect portion sizes, visually appealing as well as fresh, delicious flavor combinations. The service was wonderful, warm and professional. The atmosphere was a little too flat or minimalist. Atmosphere is important but definitely the least important relative to food and service.
Had a fantastic meal at the Chef's counter. Loved the wine pairing too. Absolutely fantastic value.
We found the quality and creativity of the dishes served up at Canis to be outstanding! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for an interesting meal!
A fantastic spot with great food and service! Did the wine pairing with the tasting menu and was not disappointed. Every course and wine was explained. A great night indeed!
Very delicious, amazingly presented food. Just a bit cold (but it was 30 below outside) especially when doors opened as people came in. Otherwise a great, perfectly timed, perfectly executed dinner!
Everything was amazing! Food was spectacular and service! I loved the presentation of each dish and it’s descriptions. We opted for the wine pairing as well and it was perfect! I would def go back.
Restaurant music was so loud it was difficult to maintain a conversation from across the table. Food was good but heavy on the meats and lacked vegetables. Great service
The best restaurant in the city. What a gem. I’m always surprised that I can get a reservation, the wait list should be months!!!!
Food was good, well plated and thought out though one item was too salty but we were offered a replacement dish so it evens out. Could easily see paying 50% more for this meal and being ok with it.
Beautiful food and presentation in a casual and cool space. Great value.
Highly recommended! Food was creative, beautiful and delicious. Service was elegant and unobtrusive. Room was quiet for conversation - no loud music. The evening was perfect!
Pretty good 👍 when the service know that we don't like one dish, they changed it. Really nice service.
Excellent tasting menu covering a variety dishes and styles. The pacing of the experience/evening was perfect as was the level of overall service. Relative to other similar experiences/restaurants in Toronto Canis offers exceptional value. Great drink menu if you are into that.
One of the best restaurants the city has ever seen.
Overall we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening, chatting with the chef de cuisine and sous chef. Personal fav was the chicken liver parfait and buttermilk, grape and white chocolate dessert and hubbie's the duck! Sitting at the counter though we found the seats very uncomfortable after 30 minutes - perhaps a foot rest on the counter would help relieve the pressure points.
We had wanted to go for awhile and when we arrived it seemed more casual than we were expecting. The servers and staff were pleasant but distant and not especially friendly. The food was incredible and the presentation was creative and well worth the 88$ for 7 courses! We will definitely be back when we have the chance.
Course after course, the dishes were a knock-out. Harmonious, elegant flavours beautifully presented.
My husband and I celebrated our second year wedding anniversary here. The food and service far exceeded our expectations, and the atmosphere was very energetic and lively which we loved! We thoroughly enjoyed everything especially the chicken liver parfait. We would definately recommend this to foodies and anyone who loves creative cuisine.
Very much enjoyed The creativeness and outstanding quality of the food. The chef was not put off by my dietary restrictions. We had a wonderful dinner!
We are celebrating anniversary on a quiet Tuesday evening. Everything is perfect for two of us. Got a table near the window and enjoyed every dish presented. Tried their orange wine and it’s just right. Perfect! Thanks Adam!
One of the best tasting menu we’ve experienced in Toronto. Every course was creative and very tasty. Service was technically irreproachable. However, for an outstanding overall experience, a warmer and more personalized contact would have been appreciated: there was barely polite greetings; no eye contact with the various waiters, who were quickly mumbling through the description of the various dishes; there was no soul in the service. Again, we would recommend this restaurant, but we hope service will improve.
Great tasting menu for a reasonable price. The food at Canis was very well cooked and rich on taste. The cooks don't try to be unnecessarily fancy but focus on really good products and great taste. The wine pairing wasn't that exciting so another time I would probably order something else instead. but for the food at this price tag, I thin Canis was a very very good experience.
Modern cooking and excellent technique, good presentation, fantastic service and classy surroundings
We have been to this restaurant many times and each time it meets or exceeds the previous eating experience. Fantastic food, beautiful presentation and description by very knowledgeable staff. Very accommodating to eating restrictions.
The tasting menu was excellent. A great variety of interesting flavors. Every course was delicious. Service was attentive but not overbearing; pacing was just right.
Came with my wife on a rainy weeknight. The room was at most half full and service was attentive without being overbearing, accommodating my wife's pregnancy diet with no issues (just no raw red meat and cooked medium). Recommended big/bold red wine was great and the dishes were uniquely presented. I found an issue with my raw fish dish and when I pointed it out, they were quick to apologize and made appropriate amends at the end of the meal (on the bill). Everything was well executed and flavours generally played well together on each dish. Was a great last hurrah before the baby comes!
Great meal overall, the tasting menu is a lot of fun. My main complaint would be that although the wine pairings we good, the amounts poured were painfully small given the price. Value is not quite there, but overall it's a good experience, especially on the food side.
Very interesting tasting menu, especially the duck and the homemade Ice cream! So good!
Canis is still my favourite restaurant in Toronto. I’ve been here 4 times and everytime I’m blown away with the execution of all the dishes.
Visiting from New York and staying on Queen West, I googled best restaurants in the area and this came up as an option so I made a reservation. I'm so glad I did. Really great tasting menu and at $88 Canadian for an 8 course tasting it was WELL worth the price. Very good food, nice progression from small bites to final course and amazing dessert courses. I am a big food snob and I highly recommend this place!
