This was THE worst dining experience I have ever had.
We presented an open table cheque (#79328) and they told me it was “expired.” We paid for our full bill and tipped without using the “expired” cheque, and finished our dessert.
We googled and it says Open Table cheques expire after 180 days. We asked to see the manager to discuss why she felt the cheque issued on October 16/18 was “stale.”
The owner came out and told us that her bank (CIBC) wouldn’t cash Open Table cheques after 30 days and that she wouldn’t get “burned” again by Open Table.
The owner’s husband (?) came out and started to yell at us and told us that he “worked all his life for the restaurant and didn’t need to be “ripped off by open table”.
They were extremely rude and speaking loudly infront of the other patrons.
They both threatened us, told us to “get out” and told us they didn’t care about Open Table customers.
The waiter then apologized profusely for the management’s behavior, and we left.
Honestly, after tonight’s experience I would never go back to Carisma and I don’t know if Open Table would want to be associated with this establishment. I would appreciate if something could get back to me to confirm the 180 day cheque expiry.
Amazing experience! Would highly recommend to others.
My favorite Italian restaurant. I visit every time I’m in Toronto.
I have been dining at Carisma at their location on King Street for 7 years now, and it has maintained my vote for best Italian Cuisine in the city of Toronto, even after a recent trip to Florence. But, it is with a heavy heart that I must report that their new home at 15 Toronto Street, just a slip north or their original locale leaves a lot to be desired. Gone was the charming, intimate and elevated dining ambiance. The only remaining shining quality was the food. I had reserved a table for me and my partner to celebrate his milestone 40th birthday - and the whole experience felt like an afterthought. Every single experience previous to our last booking resonates in my memory as incredibly special, which, by comparison is incredibly saddening and disappointing. The light in the new location is off, almost sickening and huge tablecloth-less IKEA tables separate diners in an almost isolating way. A note to other Carisma patron hopefuls , do not book late in the evening unless you want to be a part of the staffs clean up ritual. We felt rushed out as staff stacked tables and chairs around us. A night I had been looking forward to for weeks fizzled into disappointment. I hate to leave this tale with no compliment to the fine food we enjoyed, but I certainly will not be back to Carisma save perhaps an afternoon by myself to enjoy the top notch cuisine in a setting that feels more business lunch casual than my memory honoured intimate celebratory meals of yesterday.
Came here for dinner to celebrate my birthday, which was on the reservation . I was a little disappointed they didn’t acknowledge that it was my birthday . Aside from that I felt the tables were too small and too close together. Portions were tiny and the food seemed to be lacking flavour for me. We had the gnocchi , truffle pasta(it was a daily special) and sea bass. I don’t think I would go back.
The service was incredible. Never been to a restaurant that has gone over and above to create such a personal experience.
We chose Carisma to celebrate my birthday based on reviews and the proximity to our hotel in Toronto. We were staying at the King Edward and the restaurant is just a block away. And it was a fabulous experience in every possible aspect. The staff is warm, friendly and super helpful. The place is lovely and the service is super efficient. And the food... that is absolutely top. Delicate flavours, perfect textures, everything cooked to perfection. The menu is varied and has options for every one, the portions are generous and satisfying. Haven’t eaten such wonderful pasta in a long time. The grilled calamari were absolute perfection and the best example of how a great cook can combine just a few, simple ingredients and produce something memorable. Carisma is Italian cooking taken to a new level, at a surprisingly good price and in a delightful environment. A real gem to treasure in a city with many good restaurants but few that get everything so right. We cannot wait to go back!
Love the new location and room - felt like I had been transported to Italy for a truly wonderful evening of amazing food and wine - service was exceptional !
Worst dining experience ever. Our condescending waiter totally spoiled our evening. I won't be going back.
At first sight we thought the seating was too bright and crowded. But between the amazing food and the exceptional service the atmosphere was lively and entertaining.
The waiter Amadeus made the evening. He hugged me when I arrived and made me feel immediately welcome. His description of the specials was nothing short of amazing and entertaining and his conversation and service level was at the perfect level. The food he recommended was outstanding. Definitely would go there again and would try to get served by him again. Simply OUTSTANDING. Helped to make a special evening even better!
When we got to Carisma, it was relatively empty except for a party in a separate room. Soon afterwards, the restaurant was full. Although it was full, the noise level was not high and although the separate room was only separated by a wine cabinet, we didn't hear anything from there. Service was attentive throughout the evening.
Appetizers: Warm mushroom salad (Insalata Di Funghi) and Seared Scallop with Foie Gras (Capesante Con Foie Gras)
Mains: These were the daily specials: Shrimp Risotto and New York Steak
Desserts: Molten Chocolate Cake and Strudel
All of the food was very tasty and prepared to our request.
We loved the old location this new location and version of carisma will take a little getting use to. Food and service is still really good but the vibe is different.
Food and service were excellent as always. But, the restaurant is just not the same in the new location. It just doesn’t have the same vibe.
Carisma has moved to a new location. Same staff and same fantastic service. Food was awesome. I ordered the beef carpaccio which seemed smaller than expected for the price. Would have preferred more meat and less arugula. The osso bucco was quite satisfying. Overall great atmosphere and great experience.
Overall was a fantastic fine dining experience. Amazing customer service. And such a classy and relaxing scene!
Great modern space with goood authentic Italian food . Great wait staff! A litttle on louder side but well worth a visit! Great for group or a dinner date!
Usually very good but this time was a miss with our main served cold.
Carisma has great food and wine lists . I love the new location !!!
Best in the city. Bar none
Place had a great atmosphere but they seemed to rush us out ... the server was awesome, just seemed like the owners were all over us to eat and leave . Food was overall great ....
Excellent service, there's little like it in the city to match their attention to detail and hospitality.
My wife likes Italian food and I went to Carisma for my Wife's birthday dinner. I was talking to my colleague and he suggested me this restaurant. It took a bit for me to find the restaurant because they recently moved to a new location. But, on google they still had the old pictures and due to the landmark in the pictures we were trying to find the restaurant at the old location. Anyways, it was not that far from the previous location. So, after entering the restaurant, it was an amazing experience for us. The ambiance.. The staff... Everything was fantastic. Food was delicious. We had a three course meal everything was lip smacking. You have to watch for their prices but it is worth of it. I would definitely recommend if you want to visit this place.
Great food. Excellent server. Nice cocktail. Love the new location. Definitely recommend.
Our recent dinner to celebrate a birthday was mediocre at best. My partner's pasta was undercooked, not even el dente. I ordered the veal with mushroom sauce and they forgot the sauce so I had to wait for the server to bring some out in a container. When we ordered the apple and pear struddel, the server came back and said they had no vanilla ice cream (which is suppose to accompany the struddel). They offered chocolate ice cream which wouldn't taste very good with this partuclaur dessert. We passed on dessert but still had it on our bill and had to ask the server to take it off. We don't mind spending $300 for a special dinner, but honestly, the only thing we really liked was the bottle of wine we ordered. So disappointed. We both said we wouldn't go back. We celebrated at Scaramouche last year and it was 100x better.
Could not have been more friendly-I think we met everybody on the floor except the chef. The wine "guide" talked us down from $100 bottle of wine to $75 and he was right. Elegant, quiet, very attentive. Could not have been better for our last night in town.
Charisma has recently relocated to Toronto St and it was worth the wait whilst they closed for a few months.
The owner greets you and takes time to talk to you, the service is excellent with staff very knowledgeable about their offerings. The food is fabulous and the fantastic choice of great Barolo wines is top notch.
The atmosphere and decor is great too!
We certainly enjoyed our meal and trip to Carisma and will definitely go back.
Thank you Michael & staff
Very good food and seevice
Beautiful upscale restaurant! The gnocchi was one of the best we have had. The owner handled a small issue respectfully and exceeding our expectations. We will return again soon as a result. Best of luck at your new location.
Disappointing. The new venue lacks the charm, character and ambiance of the previous location - this restaurant could be any contemporary eating establishment in the city. It seems the emphasis was on being trendy, and in as much the enjoyment of the overall dining experience has been diminished. This, along with a much more expensive bill, will prevent us from returning to what once was one of our favourite restaurants in Toronto.
Outstanding restaurant. Owners work the floor and know theirbcystomers
order anything but pastas. i think you should be good then
Had visited Carisma at their old location. The decor at their new location very modern and airy. Food is great and very attentive service. "You gotta eat here".
Wonderful food, delicious pasta. Service was great and friendly. Love this restaurant!
Excellent food! Fresh and flavourful. However, the price is a little high for the value.
We were concerned that it was actually their "last night" as they were moving locations the next day, but in fact, other than regulars stopping by and wishing the owners good luck, there were no stumbles at all that we could tell. The food and service were both great. My lamb was superb and the fish that the others ate was delicious. The appetizers were great and since it was my birthday the complementary candle in a cake was great too. As far as the singing waiters, can't say they got all the notes on key -LOL! But can hardly wait till they're back open at a new location.
Went on the restaurant's last day on King street. You could tell that the restaurant staff really enjoyed working together as they were taking pictures of each other to commemorate the occasion. Our waiter was wonderful and quite frankly all the staff were very attentive to our needs. The food was delicious and authentic. Will go again when they open their doors at the new location.
Had high expectations but was not impressed.
This is my first time here, and i actually heard about it for many years and didnt get a chance to give it a try. Unfortunately, the food was good as i hoped. I had the osso bucco, and it wasnt tender and flavourless. The rissotto that came with it had not taste. I only smell thmye that came with the dish and taste the parsley in the rissotto. My girlfriend ordered the scallop risotto, which tasted better. You can taste the seafood flavour, however there was sand in her scallop, and the scallop was sliced in half to make it two pieces. She had two pieces (4 sliced in half). The risotto was not cooked well, it was quite raw for some of the rice and it was hard to chew. Iwas quite disappointed as i had very high expectation.
The server didnt pay much attention to my table, maybe because i didnt order a bottle of wine, like the table next to me. He asked if we needed pepper or cheese, and then went to serve the guest next to us. He forgot to give us pepper and cheese for the tasteless food. Also, i had an empty glass of water for half my meal.
