Chapter One - Guilford
Stonington sea scallops over a tomato-asparagus risotto, garnished with pecorino romano cheese
Fresh picked Maine lobster meat served either hot with butter or cold with celery and mayonnaise, on a toasted bun with Old Bay potato chips & fresh lemon
1. My lemon drop martini came without a sugared rim. When I asked the server to ask the bartender to make a new glass with the sugared rim she said “I’ll ask her if she wants to do that!”
2. I’m a firm believer that alcohol should be offered with a carb like bread or crackers. None here.
3. The swordfish was overcooked.
4. The shrimp scampi was bland. No grated Parmesan was offered.
I’ve seen many people eating there for breakfast and lunch; perhaps those meals are better.
I brought my sons and Mom, waitress was great, food so/so- overpriced entrees at 30$ For most plates. It wasnt bad food, just not what Id consider 30$/plate quality. Id go back for apps and drinks probably not a dinner. Drink menu was excellent and apps we had were very good. Definitely not geared toward kids but they were very accommodating.
Ambience was great. Food was tasty and very nicely presented. Would definitely go back with friends.
Delicious Food. Good Service. Nice atmosphere. Easy Parking
Decided to treat my husband for his birthday to a new place. Found this restaurant in open table and the menu looked good. It took 25 min for the waitress to stop by our table. Mind you, our table was right in the middle. Our drinks were wrong but the excuse was “we have a new bartender.” We ordered oysters but the waitress did not know where they were from. Instead said “the ones you catch.” I wondered if the oysters were from the marsh area :-).
Our dinner came then the oysters, only because we reminded the waitress we had ordered an appetizer. We ordered an extra plates for sharing and we never got it.
Overall the food was good. Ambiance was good and they were busy for a Friday night.
Ended up driving to another restaurant for a birthday dessert and an after dinner drink.
Will definitely not return to this restaurant named Chapter One. One wonders if they will be more chapters :-)))).
Service unbearably slow
Took us quickly to our outdoor table we had a cocktail and waited for our meal.Soup and salad came out reasonably on time and then we sat for a long time until the waitress asked my wife how was your dinner she said I wouldn’t know as it did not turn up? Our waitress was unaware of our situation and said let me go look into this when she came back it was just like matter of fact that they misplaced our ticket. The food came however it was disappointing it took so long.No attempt was make to rectify the situation poor customer satisfaction.Maybe on time next time would be helpful if there is a next time.Want to give back locally however need to pay better attention to detail.
I will be back! Very classy and nice atmosphere the food was tasty but my complaint is it could’ve been bigger portion for the price but now I know for next time. The waitress was very friendly and helpful and the location is downtown Guilford is a delight!
Charming early evening dinner on the patio. Our server was attentive and polite! Our visiting West Coast guest loved the New England clam chowder.
Unfortunately, like many other restaurants these days, Chapter One seems to be trying to maintain a quality dining experience, but falling short due to staff shortages. Our food took an exceptionally long time to arrive and my shrimp scampi dish was void of the flavors and items as described in the menu. The waitress understood and spoke with the manger for a remedy. I was pleased with the drinks and appetizers enough to consider returning in the future for happy hour only. Also, we noted during the reservation that we were celebrating our anniversary - most places acknowledge that sort of thing, Chapter One did not.
food was good but service very poor wine was reasonable scotch was way overpriced
Enjoyed outside patio but service was slow
Raf our waiter was fabulous and took care of my allergies. Fabulous food. Sat on the patio beautiful lighting on a late summer evening. Highly recommend
From the seating by the hostess to the final check, it was a pleasurable experience. Christie M. our server was a delight. Several of us started with the French Onion Soup and it was very good. I had the Bolognese and it was very good but not as hot as I would have liked it. My wife had the Scallop Risotto and again good but not hot.
The tastiness outweighed not being quite up to temperature. This is a great place to eat and their outdoor patio is very quaint and cozy.
Our waiter was very friendly and the food was delicious! Great brunch menu, cocktails and outdoor patio!
The outdoor patio, drinks, food, service and atmosphere was amazing. I have no complaints. As a bonus the servers all were wearing masks. I can’t wait to return! Highly recommend.
This is one of our go to places mainly for the outside patio and a couple dishes we love. Cheesecake to die for! They could stand to be a bit more consistent with food prep and replace the narrow dishes that food falls off of. Staff always friendly & accommodating.
Such a beautiful little spot - the outdoor dining was quaint and lovely. Our server was charming and the food was very good.
I have been to this restaurant many times and usually have enjoyed my meal very much. In fact, last month overall great. This weekend, poor service and food. No bread-they ran out, appetizer arrived at the same time as the entre and to food all subpar. New cook? New waitstaff? I don't know. Very disappointing.
It was a great experience and a beautiful place to have an outdoor dinner.
From all the great reviews (and from the prices) I really expected more from Chapter One. The food was mediocre at best. My bolognese was pasta with meatballs, a couple of sausage slices and a stray piece of what might have been veal. It pretty much tasted like spaghetti and meatballs. My husband got a Caesar salad with a tuna steak, which he asked for rare. It came well done. He left half of it on his plate. The server did not ask why. We won’t be returning to Chapter One.
$43.00 for the pasta special (gluten free) says it all. NYC prices in Guilford, Connecticut just wasn’t worth it. My cocktail was huge and delicious, and our servers were attentive.
Server was friendly and efficient! Pleasant outdoor patio. When asked regarding watered down Watermelon Martini, server was understanding and brought an additional oz of vanilla vodka to be added to drink. No charge other than $14 for the Martini. Tasted very delicious once more liquor was added. Fried calamari soggy from the chili thai sauce served directly on the calamari rather than on the side.My wedge salad good, but stingy with bacon. Husband’s Mac and cheese needed salt and more cheese, quite bland.
Will be back as service is good and close to home. Some improvements needed.
Sebastian was a great waiter
Dinner was very slowly paced. If we were in a hurry, it would have been too slow. We wanted to talk so the pace was okay. Service was attentive and friendly. Drinks were good appetizers were good although they ran out of oysters. Not a big deal. Entrees were good but could have been served hotter. We got one entree comped and desserts for the table. They were unfortunately understaffed and the kitchen was overwhelmed so it was decent of them to comp one entree and the three desserts. I hope they can hire more help soon. I’m sure the pandemic has taken a toll on their business. We would probably give them another chance as there was a spark of something there.
Excellent service by waiter Sabastian . All of our dinners were excellent. They did run out of all of the oysters and most of the deserts. However our experience was great.
Brunch was pretty good, nothing to write home about though.
Beautiful outdoor setting; excellent attentive service.
Outdoor seating was comfortable and cute. Good tasty cocktails. Those were the good parts.
Both appetizers came out at different times not hot. Salmon was thin and not good tasting. Citronella candles were blowing excessive black smoke due to wicks too long. We told wait staff but nothing was done.
It took an hour for simple breakfast food to come out. But the food was delicious and the service was ok.
Great service, great food, great company
Great service as always!
Food was very GOOD and service was GREAT
WILL RETURN TO THIS RESTAURANT
First time here. Ordered several menu items for our party of 4, all were very tasty and freshly prepared. The server was pleasant and helpful with menu suggestions. Kitchen accommodated our special requests without any issue. The special entree was a bit on the pricey side, but delicious. Would definitely return!
We like Chapter One a lot for both lunch and dinner. The food is good to very good. The service is also very good. The garden in back is nice. I will suggest that one bring a sweater because it is always very cold in the dining room.
Food was excellent, waitress was attentive & helpful, no long waits. We will definitely return to Chapter One. We were seated at a table for 2 close to the hostess station, which was not a problem, but would have preferred seating closer to the windows, where we could see the Guilford Green on a summer evening. Next time we will mention that. Overall a very good experience.
Sebastian is an excellent waiter
The floor was dirty the glasses were dirty the napkins were dirty the bathrooms were dirty
Comfortable, casual, and delicious. I hade the Tuna entree and my wife had the Shrimp Alfredo. Mystic oysters were fresh and delicious. Service couldn’t be beat
Took over an hour to get our food.. the waiter was very inattentive. He didn’t check on us and we had to pull another waitress aside to order our food. Wasn’t busy so there was no reason for it. Strangely quiet too… overall decent food
The server was attentive at first Took drink order right away but then didn’t take our food order for 30
Minutes. Caesar salad was bland and not crisp. Fried shrimp were very good though.
