Charlie Palmer Steak - DC
Much more than a steakhouse, the timelessly stylish restaurant moves the political power meetings out of the back room and into private dining spaces, sleek enclaves of dark wood. Located off the wide, open expanse of the National Mall, Charlie Palmer’s Steak’s rooftop terrace can accommodate 400 guests for private events, offering the city’s most impressive view of the Capitol.

I had the pre fixe lunch special for $29 which included an appetizer and entrée. I ordered the Cesar salad and the burger with cheddar cheese and an order of chimichurri sauce on the side. My burger temperature was a TRUE medium (it was cooked closer on the medium rare side). The burger was amazing (moist, juicy, and tender). The side of chimichurri sauce took it to the next level.
Pandemic New Year's Eve dinner at Charlie Palmer was perfect. Low key, delicious food and great service. We had the NYE fixed menu and everything was great. Scallops were perfectly seared, truffle risotto amazing, steak perfect med rare and delicious.
While my seating in the restaurant can't be blamed on anyone the extremely slow service can be. For this to be a high price restaurant the attention to detail was lacking. Any meals close to $500 should be a dining experience and this was far from that fact.
As always, Charlie Palmer does not disappoint. I treated myself to a New Year’s dinner and it was superb. The food. The drinks. The customer service. Superb!
Visited Charlie Palmer's last night and had some issues that turned what could have been a great meal into an average one. It started with our appetizers, we ordered a salad to share, the tuna tartare, and an french onion soup. All 3 were brought at the same time for our table of 2, which was not ideal. The soup had no flavor and the salad had a lot of brown lettuce. They waitress was very helpful and took away the soup and brought a new salad. We had the dry aged Porterhouse for our entree, it was good, but not as good as I'd expect for a $130 steak. The onion rings were delicious. When it came time to pay the check, they told us there was a problem with the credit card machine, it took almost 30 minutes to get it mostly sorted out, and they still had to write down my credit card info and process it later. Not an ideal situation.
I would say it was marginal at best. Steak was great, as were the cocktails. I’d only go back if someone else offered to take me for a free meal.
The very warm welcome from the hostess/host made us feel at home!! Excellent service provided by Tom (our server). Overall, me & my family were very happy with treatment we received from staff and the food was great too. Thank you !!
First, the food at CP is excellent. We were happy with everything that we ordered. It is not cheap, but you pay for the full experience. This is where Charlie Palmer’s falls completely flat. This was our experience:
I’ve eaten at CP numerous times over the past 20 years. Both personally and on business functions. Service has always been…fine, but the food more than makes up for it. I’ve never had an experience like we had on 12/23/21. It started off fine. Ordered drinks, including a bottle of wine. We had a party of 5 - 2 adults, two teenagers and one ten year old. Here are the highlights: wine took 20 minutes to come to our table; we had to use our bread plates for the appetizers (which were already dirty from the rolls and butter); after the initial pour of wine, I personally poured all additional glasses; no one got any refills on drinks, we saw our server three times the entire experience; we ordered 4 entrees for the middle of the table and did not get individual plates (had to ask twice); asked for an additional order of rolls and they never came; and to top things off, the table next to our left started playing their own music on their phone for them to listen to, at top volume. We spoke to two servers about this. None approached the table to ask them to stop. They said a manager had to be the one to talk to them. It was like we were in an episode of the twilight zone. If you go to CP for the food. Great. If you go for the experience, I’d suggest going somewhere else. Personally, I won’t be going back anytime soon for personal or professional dining. I expect more from this caliber of restaurant.
Thank you SO MUCH for a beautiful evening with my family. We enjoyed every minute here. The service was amazing and the view is the best in DC!
The food was very average. The steak on the lunch steak salad was tough/not tender. At an establishment like Charlie Palmer’s, the steak options should be the best options! Ambiance is very nice and easy to converse. After the meal, I had to travel across the dining room to request the check. For many eating lunch, there is a limited window to do so thus having an attentive/intuitive staff is very important.
The my waiter was outstanding and food was excellent as usual.
They did an amazing job! Set us up a private dinner when the restaurant was purchased for the night. Made our family feel special. Thank you to all the staff and management!
Great service. Had a real enjoyable evening. The waiter was attentive and made great selections.
We had such a wonderful time here celebrating our three year anniversary here. The staff was so lovely to us and it was phenomenal service. We were greeted with champagne and at the end of our dinner, a dessert on the house with a beautiful inscription on the plate reading “happy anniversary!” They were kind enough to to take pictures of us with the beautiful view of the Capitol. We felt so special and ate so well. The food was incredible and exceeded our already high expectations. We are excited to come back! Thank you so much to the entire staff at Charlie Palmer!
Perfectly done steaks! Wonderful accompaniments, nice atmosphere for a business dinner.
There is no better restaurant in town for a business meal.
Ahi Tuna Tartare tasted amazing. Oysters were fresh, and the steak salad was a nice portion. Service was superb.
Service was a bit iffy. We ordered Brussel sprouts and never got them. My son ordered penne pasta with red sauce but we got macaroni noodles with butter sauce.
The waiter completely confused what we ordered. The food came out in different spacing for the three of us. The sides were completely cold and actually terrible.
One of my favorite, go to places in DC. Food is fabulous and customer service is consistently good.
Great location, no parking.
The food at this place has been very low quality and tasteless. Microwave processed
Excellent vibe and great food!
My husband and I were visiting from New York Thanksgiving weekend which also fell on our anniversary. Being from out of town, this place was perfect for a date night. It’s extremely cozy inside, the ambiance is good, tasty food and the service is impeccable. They kept giving us complimentary food which was so nice! Since the restaurant was so quiet the night before Thanksgiving, our waiter graciously invited us up to visit their rooftop which provided amazing panoramic views of The Capital and the city. It was an experience we will never forget!
We have lived in the DMV for nearly 18 years and have never heard of this phenomenal place. It was my husband's birthday and I asked a friend for a recommendation, and she didn't even blink before she said Charlie Palmer's. Let me say that we have visited some nice steakhouse's in the area, and NONE have compared to our experience here. From the service, the food, drinks, everything was amazing. I would not change a thing about our night, my husband had a wonderful birthday evening, and all was well. OH! And the twice baked potato with truffles!!! WOW, just WOW!
If you have never been, please go. If you have been, then you already should have your reservations to go back!! We sure will.
Had a window seat with the view of the capital. Service was excellent and our meal delicious.
The service and food, at a time where both have been compromised due to the pandemic, were great! I had the halibut and my partner, the hanger steak. We both enjoyed our meals and, though I'm no steakhouse buff, I certainly will go back.
I had really high expectations and maybe that was my downfall. Everything was good: nothing was sent back and service was fast, but nothing wowed me. I was disappointed about that. Some people dined in t-shirts and jeans, others in suits and dresses. I expected a more refined experience, and was let down.
Mediocre. Feels like a hotel dining room not a steak house. My bone in rib-eye was not good. Gristle. Lacks ambiance
Great food and ambience. Charlie Palmers never disappoints.
Loved the raw oysters
Highly recommend the creme brulee.. it's so good and I will have it over and over again.
The food was a little bit salty and the NY steak slightly tough. But the service was great!
Charlie Palmer is our go to, whether for a business lunch, an outing with friends or for an event. We know that we will always encounter a beautiful space, terrific food and beverages and attentive, careful service. GM Michael Irving does an outstanding job of ensuring the highest standards when it comes to hospitality. We could not love this wonderful spot more!
For place known for steaks, my steak was poor. First not cooked to medium rare. But more so lack of flavor.
Long time Charlie Palmer fan (cookbooks, Healdsburg, Mauritson winery) and the chance to dine here on the night prior to the USA vs New Zealand rugby match was an opportunity not to be missed. Staff were outstanding, menu options varied and delish. Would definitely recommend and will definitely visit again when travels take us to DC. A Charlie Palmer restaurant experience is uniformly outstanding.
We rarely go to restaurants; "saving" them for special visits. We have in the past 4 months truly enjoyed the Charlie Palmer experience 3 times. This 4th visit was a disappointment. The filet was delicious. Everything else was oversalted. We were never asked how our meal was progressing, if one of us would like 2nd glass of wine. We truly could have over looked the food, if we had not felt invisible.
Excellent food and service
This was a beautiful place to celebrate our 34th Wedding Anniversary! The food and our server was excellent!
The resturant had a pleasant atmosphere but was poor value. My steak was excellent but my wife’s similar steak was under cooked. The manager apologised and offered free deserts and coffee
Everything was amazing! Our bartender and waitress Danny and Kamara were on point the whole time as well as the manager Lamar! The playlist was also very good! We enjoyed all of our food and the drinks were great as well. As a fellow Washingtonian I recommend this place and will be back again for sure!
