Chi Modern Vietnamese Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
Dishes had great flavours but we found them slightly oversalted. Favourite were the duck rolls, sable fish and braised pork belly. Prices are quite steep for the size of the sharing plates.
Dined early at 5:00 p.m. with a party of five before attending a concert. We asked Chi Le, the owner and chef to choose dishes for us (but to include shaken beef, one of my favourites). Chi steamed a snapper that wasn't even on the menu and curried duck and yams was excellen. One couple was so impressed that they planned to book themselves with a party the following evening.
Not your typical vietnamese restaurant .. great modern fusion twist. The mint ice coffee is definitely a must try.
The grilled garlic brussels sprouts was an excellent recommendation by the server.
Completely understaffed and food was very overpriced. It would have been better at a hole in the wall.
Outstanding food and experience, as usual.
Chi herself is so personable and attentive, which makes it all the more pleasant.
Everything we ordered was exceptional!
This restaurant is fantastic. We have been to Vietnam and the food at Chi is not only autherntic but superior Vietnamese cuisine. It is most definitley high end Vietnamese cuisineWe are so fortunate to have this restaurant in Vancouver.
Absolutely delicious food and wonderful food. Cannot say enough about how great this restaurant is.
I'm not normally a fan of Vietnamese food but the aromas wafting from this restaurant drew us in. The food was FANTASTIC! We had the 'Shaken Beef' which just melted in your mouth. The tamarind prawns were delicious and perfectly cooked and the green beans were yummy. The restaurant is beautiful and the service great. Would definitely go back again!!
Went here with my partner the other day and it was super romantic, we came in and were seated promptly by the server and the restaurant was very lively, yet romantic which was perfect! The server there was really kind and helpful and he helped us through the entire menu and wasn't distracted or in a rush despite the restaurant being a little busy and he gave us ample attention, which is quite awesome for an asian restaurant. The food was also quite delicious, the Shaken beef was recommended as a must have and although we were skeptical because of all the steak I have tried in my life, chi does not disappoint at all. The filet mignon melted in my mouth and it's comparable to the likes of slanted door in San Francisco. Moreover the Garlic Green Beans and the sablefish claypot were very nice and the duck rolls were filling and umami heaven. I definitely recommend and the food came out super quick as well! The drinks were amazing, the service was above and beyond and the food was delicious! We will definitely be one of their regulars and we hope they stay here for a long time.
Service was really poor. Once seated our server was slow to take our drink order. Equally slow to come back and take our food order. She didn't offer any explanation of the menu or suggestions other than to add more orders of rice because she specifically said that there was certain dishes we had selected which required rice.
The food arrived by a second server; the food was placed on the table with no explanation of what dish it was or what it contained. The food also unfortunately came well before the rice forcing us to wait and have our main dishes turn cold. Also once the rice did arrive it was crusty on the outer edges and luke warm. It tasted like it had been sitting out on a counter for a very long time. Surprising that of all the dishes the rice was the most poorly prepared.
We tried hard to get the attention of our server to inform her of the rice situation - even though the restaurant was not busy - and finally another server came over and offered to replace the rice.
The food itself was tasty but our server never came back to check on the food, our experience or to allow us to order more drinks. We tried flagging her down a few times before she came over again so that we could order another bottle of wine. She then disappeared again and never came back to ask if we wanted any more drinks or anything else to eat. And then we waited again, quite a while, for her to come back with the bill and when she did we asked for it to be split in two but she came back promptly with one single bill.
It really is unfortunate that we experienced such poor service because the food itself was good. But there are a lot of restaurants in Vancouver with good food AND good service and I'd rather frequent a restaurant where I feel valued and cared for during my visit. My first time to Chi is my last time - sorry.
Innovative Vietnamese food suitable for small and large appetites. Lots of different meat, vegetable and seafood dishes to suit a variety of tastes and dietary requirements. The chef/owner came by to make some recommendations. Good value for money.
One of the best Vietnamese Restaurant in town. This is my 4th time there and still loving it. The food were delicious. Will be back again the next time I'm in town.
With a reservation, we had to wait a very long time to be seated & again for service even though the restaurant was a quarter full on a Friday evening. The staff appeared to be rather frazzled.
We started with the duck spring rolls which were flavourful but not crisped properly and arrived at room temperature. The Garlic Green Beans were ok - not properly spiced. Both the Shaken Beef & the Lemongrass Chicken Claypot were overly sweet - tasted more like dessert than main course. The ingredients appeared to be very good - beef was tender with lots of fresh herbs as was the chicken. Unfortunately, the execution of the dishes was poorly accomplished. To top it all off, the sticky rice was just a huge gooey mess that chopsticks couldn't maneuver.
Always fantastic food, great service. Definitely some of the best Vietnamese food anywhere.
Excellent food and service. The cook came out and showed us a jackfruit and gave us some to taste.
Great food and unique dishes. Would recommend as higher end Vietnamese restaurant
Haven't had such a bad meal for a long time.
Not only were the dishes skimpy they were also over cooked, over salted and burnt! I wouldn't go back there again!
Delicious food. Many many GF choices. Terrific service. Excellent cocktails
This was our second time going to Chi and both times it has been fabulous. The modern Vietnamese cuisine is very innovative and incredibly flavourful. The staff are very attentive, including the owner/chef who engaged us in conversation both times and is very nice. The ambiance is great with a beautiful painting done by the owner's daughter dominating the room. A fantastic experience!
The food is overpriced and the beef didn't tasted like wagyu..
Food was delicious, without a doubt. Service was a little slow and there was some confusion with a drink order, but everything was taken care of in the end. Restaurant loses stars for value - menu dishes overpriced for the quantity of food. While this is not your local Vietnamese restaurant (staples like pho and bun aren't on the menu), $17 for a dish of fried green beans is ridiculous. And charging extra for a "side" of rice that is barely a few mouthfuls feels like overkill. Don't nickle and dime your customers on that sort of thing - if you're going to charge a lot for your main dishes, at least provide the $0.20 of rice to go with them for free.
I was blown away at every dish I had at Chi. I had seen mixed reviews but I wanted to give it a try for myself. As someone who likes unique flavors and dishes this place really hit the spot. They use local ingredients and the quality really shows in the dishes, this is definitely worth every penny and the experience itself is lovely. My whole party loved the fried rice, the tamarind crab, and wagyu beef. Service was quaint but friendly, good place for business meals or family. Beautiful restaurant and great drink and food menu. Will be back soon.
A must-try for anyone looking for innovative Asian cuisine. Beautiful decor. A very interesting menu. The cocktail and tea list look great. Great for gluten-free vegans.
Twice, I've been to Chi. Both times, the food takes ages to come, and it appears that drinks have been forgotten. The food is okay, but not for the price. Definitely not worth how much it costs.
Loved Chi! A fresh take on Vietnamese food. Duck roll, shaken beef and everything we had was great. Will definitely be back.
We had read a few negative reviews, but mostly ok ones. Had to give it a try. Absolutely, a great find. Innovative menu, nice portions, owner came over and shared her passion about the restaurant. If you are looking for an upscale Vietnam restaurant with a cool vibe and very good food , please try Chi. We will be back Duck egg rolls were excellent
It was a dine out dinner with small potion. Foods are delicious and very creative.
Good food, good service. Nothing to really complain about. Music a bit loud.
Mother in law's birthday dinner. Fantastic food and service, highly recommended Chi. My only complaint would be the music choice was a bit aggressive and loud for conversation (hip hop/dubstep)
While the price point during this year's Dine Out Vancouver event was excellent, I gave the value grading a "good" because it may be quite pricey for everyday dining. However, if you're coming here for a special occasion, I would highly recommend it. Chef Chi creates such creative, innovative, and delicious dishes using traditional ingredients with a modern twist. Every dish we sampled was excellent. If these dishes are this good during a Dine Out event, I can only imagine how divine it must be during regular times. Can't wait to come back!
The food was very flavorful and authentic but with a creative twist to some dishes. The duck rolls were amazing and definitely a must have. Though the music was a bit loud, the decor and service was quick and staff were friendly. Will definitely come back !
Went there for their dineout menu. Food was absolutely delicious and portion size was generous! My favourites were the duck roll and the coconut chicken. We had to get it packed to go cause we weren't able to finish it all. Rice came out a little undercooked but once we told our waitress it was fixed immediately with a new bowl of steaming fresh rice. Definitely recommend!
Came here for dine-out. The crispy duck rolls alone were worth the visit. The beef carpaccio was a little less successful - a bit too sharp. The coconut lemongrass chicken was solid. The tamarind prawns were juicy and delicious. The tapioca pudding was decent, the other for pay option of the ginger syrup (black sesame mochi) was a little too odd for us. Would go back. Hip atmosphere.
Went here during dineout vancouver and had one of the best meals of my life. As a carnivore who loves red meat I went with the beef carpaccio and zabuton wagyu shaken beef upgrades which were a steal. For the price of the set plus upgrades it was still half the price of a 8oz cut at other restaurants! The meat was deliciously cooked perfectly so it was juicy and flavorful. Will be back again to try the other dishes on their menu, extremely beautiful and innovative restaurant. Really changed my perception of vietnamese food and culture. Thank you chef chi and team.
The food was a real surprise. Excellent flavours and textures. Overall good value.
We made a mistake coming here during Dine Out Vancouver as they did not have their regular menu available. Vietnamese food is best enjoyed family-style and the Dine Out format is not conducive to this.
There was an upcharge for most items on the menu, which I feel they could have avoided by serving smaller portions.
I specifically do not like going to restaurants that participate in Dine Out, but unfortunately I had booked weeks in advance and it was too short notice to go somewhere else.
Environment was super nice whether for date or friends gathering! Amazing food experience as well. We truly enjoyed the time
The appetizer was amazing, the entree was good but was only chicken and rice (no vegetables at all!!) and dessert was another starch-bomb. Half tasty and half meh. Not a good dine-out value choice.
It was our first time there, quite a disappointment knowing the chef was a master chef runner up in Vietnam. The entrees was a food court average; the duck spring rolls hardly tasted any duck meat, the squid salad was nothing but burns on your tongue with red hot chilly pepper. The service was slow and unattended most of the evening. Towards the end of evening, the pop music was so loud we felt they were trying to kick us out, it was only at about 9:30.
Modern take on Vietnamese cuisine; well-executed flavours and nice spices. Had a 3-course dinner featuring the duck rolls, shaken beef (came with a bowl of rice) and taro tapioca dessert. My two other dinner guests ordered different mains but they both thought the shaken beef was the best. Had a cocktail as well - modern take on a Mai Tai that was pretty tasty. Ambiance is dimly lit clean modern decor with bar height seating. Service was attentive. No complaints.
