I really don’t like leaving a negative review. Unfortunately our experience of eating here was not a totally good one. It took a while for our drinks to arrive and then a waiter appeared explaining we could not have our wine of choice as no one could find the key to the wine store . We were offered an alternative which we did not like or the remains of a bottle in the bar which was not enough for 3 people so one of our party had to have a different wine from from the bar. When the bill arrived we felt sure that the drinks would have been complimentary due to the wine store mishap but instead we were charged an extra 17.00 service charge. We told the waitress unfortunately we would not be paying this although we acknowledge it was not her fault. The food was ok but the whole experience was a little ruined by the hotel not being able to supply wine of our choice with our lunch.

Booked for Bank Holiday Sunday night and was not told when making the reservation that the only menu was the Sunday lunch menu. Having said that the food was really good. The restaurant was very quiet so not much atmosphere, should imagine it would be better with more people. Before our dinner we went to Becketts roof top bar, that was something or nothing to be honest. The waitress didn’t know what a kir royale was and when she came back to say they couldn’t do it I asked for chambord to be used instead of the casis and she said she would need to check if it could be done. Disappointing as good cocktail lounges tempt you with delicious cocktails or if they have run out of something suggest alternatives, not here just a bit bland to be honest, they won’t do very well if they don’t get a decent mixologist. Lovely viewpoint though, amazing.

We were expecting better. Our dinner was in the lunch area as the dinner area was already set for breakfast, we could only choose from the lunch set menu, the table was next to the toilet door and the food seemed to have been reheated.

The restaurant was a little quiet during my midweek visit but the staff made for a friendly atmosphere, the food was very nice with although I did think the wine a little expensive. There was a kitchen area including a charcoal grill within the restaurant on which Byron the very helpful chef cooked me a wonderful steak.

The person who greeted us was not welcoming and not interested in the fact that we had a booking. He seated us and gave us menus but no drinks list and didn't come back! We had to ask more than once for tap water. We were served by three (or maybe four) different staff with various levels of grace and competence. The food was good but the vegetraian / vegan main was very unimaginitve and there was no dessert option. My friend ordered a dessert which was still being prepared at 8.30pm so we were told there would be a delay - she rapidly changed her mind. Very much a hotel restaurant with a noisy birthday party in the lobby around the corner and rather stark seating with diners seated in close proximity despite there being many other tables available.

Relatively new and well appointed. Part of an Indigo franchise that has very good restaurants, so I have no doubt this will come right. Agency chef on day we visited who I wouldn't trust to cook toast. Our mains went back twice. Most people left in anger before being served because of the waiting time. Yes, I did put 'most' and meant it. Felt really sorry for the servers. Check back in a couple of months. I have no doubt the management will pull this around and hopefully Colsons will become a local star like its sister the Elder in Bath (Plate in Michelin). Just not now. Breakfast (different brigade) was very good though, and the hotel in which restaurant is located is modern, comfortable, friendly and professional.

Awful service, out of most ingredients, could only serve a Sunday Lunch menu at 7pm at night despite there being an All Day menu on the website. We definitely will not recommend this place to friends or family.

We visited the spa first which was amazing then had a meal booked in the restaurant. There were only 4 guests dining (including me and my wife) and we sat down at 12.30 and if took almost half an hour before anyone took our order! Then we had another long wait for the fold. My wife specifically said she was gluten free and when her roast came out she had a Yorkshire pudding so we questioned if that was gluten free and when the waiter checked he said no sorry! My wife was reluctant to eat the rest but the waitor assured her it was ok and all gluten free including gravy but since the meal she has been poorly with cramps and sickness which she suffers when she's eaten gluten or wheat. No one apologised for delays or service. Disappointed.

Awful. Table booked for 8pm but didn’t get main course until after 9pm. We were told the chef had walked out so kitchen was ‘a bit slow’. Halibut was overcooked and dry, mashed potato- when it finally arrived - was stone cold. They replaced it with a different mashed potato dish, this one was not just cold but oily too. We were then asked if everything was alright!!! The bar manager had been left in charge of the restaurant for some reason, she was very apologetic and reduced our bill accordingly. Something very wrong at Collins, I suggest you avoid it at all costs.

I asked the waitress twice for a gin and tonic and all she kept doing was asking me if I wanted water to drink maybe I had to fetch it myself from the bar but she did not say that. The scones were over done very dark brown and hard as bricks and too big. I did mention the scones to the staff who asked if we wanted more which sounded like they had a choice whether to give us burn ones or not. The rest of the food was very nice. when we booked we were asked if it was a special occasion and it was our wedding anniversary but no one even said happy anniversary so dont why they needed to know.

Beautiful restaurant with quality furnishings & comfortable chairs . Would return , but there are better places in Exeter for afternoon tea .

Good food but terrible service from being ignored at the bar at the very start to waiting for menus or service for 10 minutes, to being told they had about 5 wines on the entire wine list and then being asked to order 3 different times. Just all over the place which is a shame as the venue is gorgeous and the food was great

The staff there were great but not enough of them so at the end of the night we were waiting a long time for service. The food was mostly good but one steak was cooked incorrectly and the triple cooked chips were anemic and floury, seemingly from a freezer bag although we were assured otherwise. Definitely not worth £39 price tag for 1 steak and chips. Very disappointing as the previous visit the chips were clearly hand cut and the best we’ve had anywhere. Such a shame

We had the roast which was very nice, the beef was tasty but a little too rare for me. Lovely choice of vegetables, however, the roast potatoes were not crispy & were very pale. My husband had the pork & said it was superb. We would certainly go again .

Unfortunately, we had a bad experience here. Mine and my friends meal were inedible. Some staff were poorly trained and quite rude. Some of the meal didn’t even turn up. My partner did every much enjoy his beef check and the wine was lovely. I feel like it was vey hit and miss, which you don’t want when you’re paying that kind of money.

we weren't offered a dessert menu and so didn't realise there was one until we left and saw other tables eating dessert. The restaurant did have bottled water (unlike the bar Becketts) although not chilled, but also surprising that a bottle wasn't able to be run up from the restaurant to the bar earlier. I would have been happy to go down and get it had I known. I asked to order a glass of rose to have with my dinner. The waiter returned to inform me that a bottle of rose would be over £400 and that there wasn't any other rose he could find. This surprised me for two reasons, firstly the cost of the bottle or rose and secondly because there had been guests in Becketts drinking glasses of rose. The sample wine list on the Colsons website is very good. Whilst I appreciate this is only a sample the actual wine list was very disappointing.

Pre-booked an afternoon tea for a birthday. Arrived and staff running around clueless like they didn’t know an afternoon tea was booked (it wasn’t even busy?) Staff shouting across the room at each other. On their phones. Chatting personal convos just two tables away from us. Not very attentive. Took almost 30mins for the afternoon tea to come to the table. Didn’t come with tea? Didn’t have takeaway boxes for the leftovers. Then charged me over £50 just for the two of us for the privilege! Overpriced. Cheap young inexperienced labour. Poor from start to finish.

We had a great meal and loved the food, although some of the portions were small and it wasn’t cheap. We also felt the lighting was too bright, connecting the dining area to the hotel reception rather than making you feel you’d come out to a high end restaurant.

It was my daughters birthday and we were really looking forward to a night out. Service wasn’t great as we had to wait quite a long time for our mains in the end we had to ask where our food was. Drinks took too long to arrive. Also the dining area was very cold couldn’t even take off my jacket. The doors were open all the time in the reception area which made the dining area very draughty. The food was lovely but extremely expensive. We had to ask for bread with out starter. We had to ask for a spoon and steak knives. We won’t be rushing back. Disappointed as we were looking forward to it on my daughters birthday.

This place has so much potential but isn't there yet. It was difficult to find something to choose from a complicated menu, not helped by the waiter forgetting to tell us what wasn't available until he came to take our order. The food is VERY expensive and just not worth it. £38 for a steak- more expensive than the Ivy down the road. My brisket was over powered by rosemary and was salty, the scallops were very nice. My friends pudding had not been given enough time to come to temperature and was hard work to eat. On arrival I had a drink at the bar, the bar was under stocked and it took sometime for the bar man to return, they also didn't have the wine I ordered, the stock room seems to be quote far away, as it took a long time foe them to check. I will probably try the upstairs bar for a drink at some point, I won't return to eat, you can getter nicer and better value food elsewhere in Exeter. Shame.

I booked a table for 5 for my wife’s 60th birthday. We were among probably 3/4 tables eating. The staff were great but service was woefully slow. Our starters were Luke warm. The mains were nice as was the desert. The website asked if the meal was for a special occasion which it was, but not one thing mentioned even though it was for my wife’s 60th. I don’t expect anything but if you ask about the occasion even a token gesture would have been appreciated. In conclusion I would say that Colsons is ok but probably due to it only just opening there are a number of kinks to iron out. Given the cost of the meal I would have expected most, if not all of them, to have already been addressed.

I have previously eaten in the restaurant not long after you first opened. I had the Beef which was amazing as was the veg and potatoes. It seems to me on my last visit the cut of beef has changed and was no where near as good as the previous time. This time probably topside, previous time probably sirloin! A little disappointing.

Amazing food, beautiful venue, terrible terrible service. The manager Ollie and Caroline are clearly under a lot of pressure and new to their jobs. The venue is beautiful and has been refurbished to a really high standard and has the potential to be a fab place to go, the food is fantastic but the service is letting the whole thing down. Every table in our section complained, people left, long waits, no one checking if our food was ok, no one asking if we wanted more drinks etc, ran out of steak on a Saturday night.

Beautiful surroundings and lovely waitress Alice. Awful food , steak looked boiled rather than grilled and couldn’t differentiate that and the mushroom alien looking think assembled on top. Braised / boiled Onion stuffed with cream cheese presented in an enormous bowl was inedible. The chips were the best bit !! Mentioned on the evening to waitress and noted but nothing remedied or any kind of action to help take the sting off a terrible and bad value meal. I emailed the restaurant after the evening as well to see if any response or customer care but no response at all , hence this review.

Delicious food but unfortunately the service was poor. We arrived at 7:30pm and didn’t get our main courses until 10pm. The waiter was very nice and made the best of a bad situation by giving us a free bottle of wine and coffee. He was rushed off feet as I believe the restaurant was understaffed. Hopefully the restaurant can improve their wait time for food as the chief is clearly talented.

When we got there an said we were there for afternoon tea the waitor looked a bit confused and said hmm interesting as if he wasn't expecting us, after we were sat down it felt like we had been forgotten about even though there was only 1 other table in the restaurant, my sister was running a little late but wasn't offered a drink for 15 minutes when she got there we had to ask a nearby waitress. When the cakes came out yes they were presented very nicely and tasted good but every single one had nuts in, unfortunately I didn't make them aware my sister had a nut allergy when booking - completely my fault for forgetting but have been for plenty of afternoon teas where not every single dessert has nuts in it and its normally fine. The only reason I gave 2 stars for service was because the lovely waiter got an extra little dessert made for her

Unfortunately we had an extremely bad service at this restaurant, the starters took over 50 minutes to be served after several status requests, once arrived food was lukewarm / cold. Followed by the mains which took another 45 minutes to arrive, steak was overcooked / extremely well done when requested to be med-rare, manager apologised however the fresh food took over 25/30 minutes to arrive when infact it should have been a priority. Total dinner time took 3 hours due to the poor service, not a place we’d visit again. Atmosphere of the restaurant and bar was lovely.
