We came here on a date, to get away from the chaos of the world. It did not disappoint. The service was great, with perfect recommendations on wine. The dishes are beautiful and well thought out, each component making the perfect balance for every bite.
I cannot wait to come back for more.
Our experience was fantastic. The server was very friendly and answered all our questions about the food. The food and drink were outstanding. The setting Wes very nice even though the city is doing bridge work. There was lists of room between table. It was one our nicest evenings out in sometime. Thank you for that.
Lovely meal out with a friend. Price Fixe was of great value. Snowy evening and great view.
I took my partner out for dinner for his 55th birthday. We had a lovely evening. The food was exceptional, the jazz was beautiful and the ambiance lovely.
Thanks for a great evening.
Avoid this place if you're hungry; the dishes are lacking. $16 for one waffle with a little berry jam and cream.
Avoid this place if you're meeting with friends; they will abruptly try to kick you out after an hour and 20 minutes.
A beautiful setting to enjoy a meal in the sunshine. The brunch options are a little limited and it was pricey for what we got. Paying for ambiance, but I'm not against that now and again.
The view and ambiance is amazing. Of course the food is simple and delicious. Love it.
We're pleased to hear that your enjoyed everything. Thanks for joining us, looking forward to seeing you soon!
Treat yourself to a marvellous venue with delicious food served by gracious and attentive staff. I hadn't been for a few years and it was delightful to return. They upped their game since my last visit.
Hi Marcy, thanks for joining us and for the kind words. See you soon!
We loved Deane House, our meal was amazing, the service excellent, and such a charming setting. We would have liked to know a bit more about the history of the house!
It has sadly lost its spark since reopening. New staff, new menu...Just ok.
Perfect place for lunch and talk with a colleague beautiful seat wonderful view excellent oysters
Loved how quaint and lovely it was!
Thank you for joining us. We're so happy that you enjoyed your experience and the aesthetic of the restaurant.
Fantastic food at a reasonable price. Great for social gathering and causal dining.
Sorry to say that we were unimpressed. Food was served "family style" as our server called it, meaning shared plates similar to Chinese food. But unlike at a family table where all the plates arrive at he same time and everyone takes a share, these plates arrived one after the other more like courses. So we had 1 plate of vegetables, then another plate of another kind of vegetable, then the meat dish. Not terrible overall, but odd and not "family style." The grilled chili cabbage and the squash were exceptional, building anticipation for the meat dish, braised boar shoulder. This was a disappointment. A very small portion for 2 people (and the cost) but as it was both too salty and dry we would not have wanted any more than we got in any case. We also had the triple cooked potato "chips". They are really chunks, not chips and they were dry and could have come with an aioli to help with the dryness. Everything is a la carte, even bread and butter.
I do not believe that my taste in liquor is all that strange but both my requests stumped the waiter. First, pastis to get started. After much searching they uncovered a bottle of Pernod, (a poor substitute) which they proceeded to drown when I asked for it over ice with a splash. I should have asked for water on the side. To finish off I requested Calvados, a French apple brandy. They had none, so I asked for a cognac. They only had St. Remy (not bad, not great) which they served in a shot glass, not a snifter.
The desserts, treacle pudding with cardomom condensed milk cream and caramel apple with home-made ice cream were okay. Nothing special.
The location is great, at the confluence of the Bow & Elbow rivers. The house itself is pleasant and airy.
Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant. With the prices and general lack of knowledge of the staff I would have to say I found it pretentious.
Our family celebrated my wife’s birthday with a Saturday brunch. From Kaylyn’s service, to the food, to the ambience...we couldn’t have asked for a more enjoyable experience.
Thank you for joining us. We're pleased to see that you enjoyed your experience.
Renovations recently done. Place still looks great.
Hate what they’ve done with the menu
Won’t be back
Amazing food and amazing service. Never thought I would eat carrots and prefer them to steak. Will definitely go back.
Thanks for joining us Anita, we look forward to seeing you soon!
Food was amazing. We were there for lunch. Acoustics were challenging - very noisy.
We're glad to know that you enjoyed your lunch with us. We look forward to having you join us again and we would be pleased to seat you in one of our more quiet corners next time.
I had a social evening at Deane House with three international business colleagues. This was not an easy group to please, they appreciate the subtle things of service, decor, menu and wine and we have all had many opportunities to experience some of the great restaurants of the world. Choosing which dishes to share was a challenge as they all sound intriguing but our waiter had some suggestions which we happily followed. The service staff organized 'flights' of food so as we finished protein, carbs and veg, the next set started to arrive. One of the group is very knowledgeable on wine and had a discussion of the relative merits of a few alternatives before settling on what turned out to be just the right one. Our first protein was boar, and one of our colleagues loved it so much he ordered a second serving of the boar before many of the other dishes had arrived. The waiter and the sommelier displayed great knowledge of the offerings and engaged us on a variety of topics, such as 'why do you use coriander on the menu for what is called cilantro in north america?' and the waiter provided the answer. As is the case with great service everywhere, they were attentive but not intrusive. The food was superb. We had a strong debate about the 'best' dishes - the boar and the cabbage coming out ahead but no agreement on the sweets - all delicious. My colleagues were fascinated with history and location of Deane House and noticed the little details - such as the serving plates. I was very pleased to be able to show off in my home town. Thank you.
Thank you for joining us, Bill and for your kind words. We're pleased to see that you and your guests enjoyed your experience. Looking forward to seeing you soon!
Discovered this only recently as I'm new to the city. This place is fantastic. Quaint, elegant, comfortable, beautiful natural light... dishes were all unexpectedly as divine as the plating. Lunched here 2 days in a row. soooo good. friendly staff. Please do not ever change that.
It was nice to see you twice in one week. We are thrilled that you enjoyed us so much! We're looking forward to hosting you soon.
I love this place. My food was just ok though. I ordered the leek eggs benedict... just ok. I did have the pastries beforehand and they were great!
We had an exceptional meal, one of the best ever, without exaggeration. The food is original, creative, and very well presented. Every plate we ordered was a delicious discovery, with a fusion of textures and tastes that was remarkable. For the excellence that we had, the prices are quite reasonable. Definitely a superior experience all around.
Ce restaurant ne deçoit jamais. Tout est bon et raffiné. Les portions sont parfaites.
We went here for a Saturday night date and it was beautiful ! Service was amazing, food was to die for and we can’t wait to go back. With drinks, lots of food and a dessert each the bill was only $140. Definitely would recommend.
Awesome new menu and updates to the Deane House. Server was amazing; excited and knowledgeable about the new menu. Only slight criticism was the dishes came out faster than expected. Nice to take a bit of time between courses during a shared plates dinner, IMHO. Otherwise, spectacular job.
Everything was exquisitely executed. A+ From the decor to the service to the food. Beginning to end it was brilliant.
Excellent food, service and value. Can’t wait to come back!!
An excellent dinner at an excellent establishment. Will be making my way down there again soon!
The Deane House is a dining jewel providing incredible food and a fantastic wine list in a beautifully restored Calgary landmark. Newly reopened and excited to go back it did not disappoint.
Our most professional and charming server, Chris made it very simple for us by recommending some standouts on the menu like Alberta poached trout and perfectly grilled Atlantic cod. His wine guidance was spot on too!
The Deane House is perfect for a special occasion however, it should be more of a weekly go-to. The only occasion you need is wanting to eat well.
Excellent service and great food in a great ambiance. Noise level was low so we could have a good conversation.
It was an amazing experience. The server was very helpful with his suggestions and he was fast and friendly. The food and drinks were amazing, probably the best meal we have had to date. We knew we were coming a few weeks in advance and made sure we had an unlimited budget for our date so we could fully enjoy what this place had to offer. It did not disappoint.
Good ambience. Our server was ok. Could have explained what was in each dish in better detail
Very small p
Good food but small portions for price.
We came on a Sunday for their free corkage and music night. Obviously the music made the place a little bit louder than normal but still very easy to have conversations and once the music finished later in the evening it returned to its normal quiet and cozy self.
The food was delicious as always, we started our evening with a 1/2 dozen oysters and their red fife sourdough. They’ve changed how their menu operates, and have it sorted by sharing, vegetables, fish, meats, and sweets. Our wonderful server Ethan explained that they’ve shifted to smaller plates and would generally recommend two plates per person. I opted for the the lacquered duck with charred cabbage, and my partner got the beef tri-tip with the study of carrots. We both shared our veg and I stole some bites of his steak. Very delicious overall :)
We finished our meal with another bottle of wine, one of their rieslings, and some dessert. I got the chocolate tart and my partner the citrus posset. An excellent way to finish our meals!
At one point I had managed to get some sauce all over my white sweater, and the servers acted quickly to get me some soda water with soap. The service and food, ambience and mood at Deane house make it one of our favourite places to eat. We really appreciate everything they do here and will absolutely be back. I recommend that everyone should eat here at least once.
I came for my birthday with my heart set on a chef tasting menu, but was told that it wasn't happening. I would have went somewhere else if I had known they were going to pull it off the menu
Very nice experience 1st visit would welcome to anyone will come again...
It is fine. Unfortunately, it is very expensive, the service is ok, and the area isn’t cleaned very well which is quite unpleasant if you try to eat.
The ambience is very nice here and the service is excellent but I’m not a huge fan of the tapas style menu. The portions were very small, the quality of food was good but nothing wow’d me.
We were really disappointed with our last dining experience at the Dean House. We've been customers of Dean House many times before, when we heard the restaurant was re-opening we were excited to come back and check it out. The new menu was extremely poorly executed to say the least, the mignonette on the oysters provided zero flavour whatsoever, I had to ask for lemon and tobasco sauce to make them palpable. The salad with fried egg didn't make any sense, the lettuce was under-dressed and the egg... well it's an egg. basically we ate dry lettuce leaves with an egg that wasn't seasoned in any event... The duck breast was entirely raw, the fat on the duck breast hadn't been rendered at all and was completely inedible. The lamb dish... not what we had expected... it showed up in a small bowl and resembled wet cat food. after being presented the lamb we were then told the lamb was missing a component, "fresh turnip" that apparently the kitchen was out of... how do you run out of turnip?! We thought the lamb was a pasta dish... instead served with one piece of sourdough cut in half.... certainly did not suffice. Bar service was incredibly slow, we got our oysters before the wine even hit the table.... The wine was overly expensive for a mere 5oz per glass, not even an option for a larger glass which ran our bill up over $200. Finally, the dessert we thought we'd give one last shot at was out and so it was time to head home. The table next to us had ordered the beef tri-tip which we inquired about and they mentioned it was tough and not seasoned... All in all, it was a terrible meal and we likely wont return until we hear news of a new chef, the 'small plates' idea is not what we came for, we came for a great meal and instead were left yearning for the old quality and menu which was orders of magnitude better before. We left still hungry and incredibly unimpressed. It's unlikely we'll be back.
