We always enjoy having Saturday or Sunday brunch at the Duke of York.
Went for dinner on a Thursday night. Great menu and awesome atmosphere. Would definitely recommend. Would prefer not to be seated beside a group of 15 people next time as I couldn't hear those at my own table.
I always emjoy the food and I like the new menu. However, I always find the service slow and I don't think the waitstaff is at fault. This is not good for people trying to have lunch and get back to work.
The service was awful, wait staff and manager were not apologetic until confronted. A very disappointing Mothers Day Brunch. We will not be returning.
We were greeted warmly and taken directly to out table upstairs with a view out the windows, a very nice feature. The wait staff, Patricia, was excellent and very friendly
It was very quiet for a Saturday night and we weren't hurried so we really enjoyed our wine, dinner and coffee afterwards in amiable peace and contentment.
We loved the basket bites for tastiness and good value for your money; however, the noise level, mostly from the next table, made it difficult to carry on a conversation without shouting to each other. Left with a bit of a stress headache.
We love their Sunday Brunch. Always worth the walk.
Great location, easy access by transit, or access to parking
We had a reservation for 20 people at 7:00 p.m. We received confirmation for the reservation. We arrived at 7 p.m. and were told that they had reserved a room for us. Unfortunately, there were other patrons in the room so they could only seat 10 of us together and tightly. The others were at two other tables. We tolerated it because the other people were about to leave. We later realized that wasn't true since they were served food after we arrived.
Our group was divided for most of the evening. I would recommend this place for food, but not for a big group. Next time, tell us the truth so we can go elsewhere right away. There was no compensation either! Very disappointing. Very unprofessional.
Excellent service and great food and beverages! 😊 Would definitely return!
A bit pricey for what's offered, but overall a nice pub in a central location.
I like the front room for a friends' get-together.
Inexpensive food in an expansive location. The upscale bar food was better than expected with a few veggy options. Service was good.
We love meeting friends there for Sunday brunch.
They do a wonderful Bloody Mary and very good breakfast offers.
We like to go on Sundays and have the pub breakfast. Often meet friends there.
Everyone likes the choices. In the summer we like to sit on their terrace.
The menu covers all the expected Pub Food plus some interesting additions, which is good., Our food arrived in good time but was certainly not as hot as it should have been....I suspect it had been sitting plated somewhere but not close enough to the heat lamps. We mentioned this to both the server and the manager, who didn't really seem to care.
We chose the Duke for its proximity to Koerner Hall and reasonable prices. For a British Pub, the menu is a bit unconventional, i.e. no Steak & Kidney Pie, Bangers & Mash, etc. lots of healthy stuff. Very good Fish & Chips. Strange quirk, most mains come with a muffin of Yorkshire Pudding au jus. Mine was cold and the jus was not evident but I don't see the logic in putting that on the plate with fish'n'chips so it didn't matter. If it was a beef dish, then the YP ought to be hot with adequate jus. Service was okay, food was good, in spite of my comments re the YP. My wife really liked the featured Moroccan Vegetable Stew. Lots of interesting beers to try. We would go back again if needing a meal in the area.
Very accommodating staff and good food. A bit noisy but overall a good little pub experience.
We had a group of eleven and were treated very well. The staff was friendly and helpful. orders were taken promptly and food delivered at a great pace. We were not rushed and special requests were honoured. The food was good and substantial. We would definitely return! Thanks Duke of York for a great evening.
Great dinner at the Duke of York. Attentive service throughout the meal. Tried different items from their "basket bite" menu to start then went with the pub classic fish and chips.
Excellent pulled pork nachos with extra cheese....great pub atmosphere.
I find Duke of York slightly overpriced and the portions slightly undersized - in other words, we pay more for less than at comparable pubs - and the service generally so-so. The only real advantage is its location for U of T folks and the décor. Sorry I couldn't be more enthusiastic, but honestly you have work to do to improve.
Also, the reservation person made the reservation under the wrong name (good thing I arrived first and straightened it out before the others arrived) and the wrong number of guests: 15 instead of 8. This resulted in our section having to be partly dismantled in front of us when the error was realized.
Front room where we sat was too overcrowded with tables and could be a potential hazard if there was a fire.
First and last time at this pub.
On Fri Oct 14, two male staff at entrance left us waiting/feeling awkward while they searched unsuccessfully for our reservation, then questioned whether we'd booked it correctly.
I pulled up confirm # on my phone and they found it, then said they'd only been using Open Table for a week so weren't familiar with how to use it.
But then our host felt that was reason enough to behave as though he was doing us a favour by finding us a table.
After his 3rd request for us to vacate the table he'd set us up at to move to yet another table, we were more than done.
We got up and went across the road to the Bedford Academy and were seated immediately and served promptly.
Service was poor, although servers were polite, they were much more interested in discussing with eachother than interacting or serving guests. It took 10 minutes just to take the drink order, 15 for the drinks to arrive, which is odd for a tea and a beer, in a restaurant that isnt very busy. Me and a friend went for our thanksgiving dinner as neither of us could go home. The food portions were ridiculously small, and not very enjoyable, quite bland; although the men sitting behind us had portions about twice the size. we ended up ordering dessert, and still had to go to another restaurant after for more food, as we were still hungry. I have been asked multiple times how my dinner was there, and my reviews were not positive.
