East is East Chai Lounge - Main Street
As evening descends upon the vibrant city of Vancouver, Chai Lounge comes to life like the courts of the eastern Raja's. Imagine a warm, dreamy and visually arresting venue where global sounds cascade the room over the din of lively conversations. Spicy scents waft from the kitchen followed by an abundance of delicious trans-himalayan cuisine.
Chai Lounge is our landmark location. There is no place like it in Vancouver, and visitors from near and far marvel at the ornate carpets, ceiling mandala's, and the nature-inspired furnishings.
The large central stage features a rotating line-up of world class musicians and dancers. We ask for a small patronage fee of $3 per person which goes to support all the live local music at East is East. Because we are very busy we hold tables for 2 hours. We look forward to serving you.
Interesting menu for both meat and veggie eaters. Rolls can be a little messy to eat and I had both a veggie and a meat choice. Both were very tasty and served with a delicious Mystery soup and salad! Also came on a Friday night when they had music!
Would come again!
We had such a good ladies evening, especially being able to sample the different teas. Then we realized that the green tea one has the most aromatic and strong spices! It just made our day that we could sample the teas and because of this, I shall bring other friends to eat again. The spinach and lamb curries were delicious and even more, the famous Bulani bread. Loved it all, this is definitely my fave restaurant. The music was nice but hoping for Flamenco next time!
Wonderful experience, all you can eat and they accommodated us when we arrived during last call. Great service and staff. Thanks so much!
This is a good mix of vegetarian and carnivorous type of eastern cuisine. It's very tasty, affordable and the place has great energy and vibe
Warm environment and excellent food! Would definitely return.
So fun! Like the only time I have seen live music durring corona, the staff was super friendly! The food was amazing, the décor was stunning! Can not wait to return!
Solid food, friendly service, live entertainment.
Originally had a reservation to come at 9pm. We were called the day of our reservation by the restaurant at 5pm and told last call was at 9:30 for food and drinks. Why they would have a 9pm reso, I am not sure? When booking there was no mention of a 9:30pm cut off. We were apprehensive and asked if this would be enough time to enjoy our meal. Our group was told to show up at 8:30pm because our table would be ready around then. When we arrived we were told to wait outside as our reservation was at 9, we told them we were told to come at 8:30 and the host didn't care. We were not offered tea while we waited in the cold, which is something they used to do in the past when I visited. We stood outside in the cold till 9:05 when we went back in to ask them about our reservation, and they sat us down. The hostess told us not to worry and she would extend our 3 course meal till 9:45. They sat us down and we were not asked about our first course till around 9:15. The server wasn't aware that we could order till 9:45 and told us we had till 9:30. We were rushed and were not able to try the dishes we wanted to. Our dine out experience is probably the worst I had at any restaurant so far this year and of any restaurant I've been to for dine out Vancouver 2021. The server wasn't kind and we were rushed while told we should get the dine out menu. I do not recommend this place. I used to come here often and bring family and friends from out of town but from this experience I will not be returning.
10/10 lovely server and fun vibes
Beautiful place to eat delicious food!
East is east was excellent. Great food, the server was very nice and friendly. However we had a time limit of 1.5 hours stretched to 2 hours because we had a party of 6 and the service wasn’t fast enough to reflect this time limit. We had the chai feast which is all you can eat and needed to order more and there were times we were sitting there waiting to order more dishes.
Everything is great except the background music was little too loud
I had the rice bowl with basmati rice, lamb curry and chicken masala. It was delicious. The decor and atmosphere is great.
Amazing vibe with awesome musicians that will leave no stones unturned to lighten up your mood and day. Very positive energy in the atmosphere.
Awesome food! Great music! Amazing service! This is my favourite place in Vancouver to eat!
Love the decor and the big wooden corner tables for privacy, makes it feel extremely Covid friendly, rustic and like you have stepped away from the city for a moment. The food is wonderful, so full of flavour, it was my second visit only so much more to discover. Cannot wait for covid to go away so I can return in the evening and check out the entertainment too. Thanks
Really enjoyed the fresh lamb wraps. Juicy and flavourful . Thank you
Great place! Service and friendliness surpassed my expectations compared to when I tried to come here before (pre-covid times). Amazing improvement with hospitality and the food is so good! Thank you for providing such a great experience.
The food and ambience was definitely amazing! Loved the unlimited food that came with the Chai tasting menus. A classier take on all you can eat menu where they bring you more food when you are done what’s on your plate! Zero waste and no waiting in line to get your own food.
Excellent friendly service, tasty food and covid protocol followed. We were not rushed during our meal and were treated to a delicious dessert for our anniversary.
We will certainly return to eat here!
Food quality and chai was great. We are thankful for the chefs amazing cooking skills. Staff were nice. We miss the old days prior to the pandemic.
Things to improve... Service was very slow. Restaurant was initially cold but it warmed up. The music wasn’t as unique as before. We ordered chai feast trays. But we could tell they were short staffed. the waitress was trying her best to help everyone as fast as possible but unfortunately it took a long time for tray refills to happen. The waitress made sure we know that we cannot take chai feast left overs home and she also made sure everyone of us has ordered a separate food and informed us that trays are per person and she asked who is ordering each tray.
Fantastic place for a filling delicious meal. Servers were very nice and the atmosphere was beautiful.
Wonderful as always! Went on a Saturday the day before Valentine's. I thought it would be busy but it was quiet. They had live music which was wonderful and made the environment more lively. The food was amazing , we had the feast, I wish I could of ate more but it was soo filling! The price for the feast was great. It was a fine out Vancouver special ... So 45$ a person for 1 appetizer, 2 mains ( to start , you can order more ) rice , roti, salad, soup and a dessert. The waitress was so kind and very attentive.
I can't wait to go back. :)
You can't go wrong with the Chai Feast or their Dine Out menu. The portions are perfect - enough to satisfy and not too much where you can't try everything else. Their Gulab Jamun comes out hot and fresh and the Khir is fragrant and delicious. The Soy Chai sample you receive while you wait for your table is a must-have. I ordered a full-sized cup to with the desserts after.
They ask for $3 for musician patronage. The group we saw was fantastic and opted to pay much more than that as we stayed for 3 hours. Can't wait to come back!
The welcome tea wasn’t offer till we askedfor it!
Their best dish with shrimp was taken out from the Menu!
The food was expensive for what it contained!
The ambience was good.
It’s a very welcoming and the food is very good for sure recommend to all my friends see you next time
Awesome service and staff!! They accommodated us even when it was passed their closing hours. Will definitely come back and recommend
Always have a great experience at East is East. Service was a tad slow, but reasonable because of the limited staff working. Worth dropping by just for their chai teas.
It's always fun to celebrate a special event at East is East. The musicians and dancers made the evening particularly enjoyable, while maintaining the Covid protocols.
Super surprised how much I enjoyed this place. Live music, unlimited curry's via the Chia Feast, and super great ambiance, it's basically the trifecta of a good place.
One minor setback, it was a little too cold.
I picked this place for my birthday celebration. Our host was the most welcoming and ensured that we have a great experience. She walked us through the menu, made great suggestions, and even sang the happy birthday song :) It was a fantastic experience way beyond my expectations.
Very nice place for different food and nice environment also the place is so unique and food is really good
💘 the live music 🎶 and ambience
Very service with a smile staff
Was a bit confused about dishes we chose
Didn't realize it was in a wrap
Would have preferred a bed of basmati instead
But taste was delish
Wine list was good
We really enjoyed great customer service and beautiful music. :)
1st time and it exceeded expectations. Food was excellent and really enjoyed the live music. They seemed to be doing a great job of COVID social distancing and cleaning between guests.
East is East is consistently delicious, the atmosphere and service is always welcoming. Great place.
The food at East is East is amazing and we always love enjoying the Chai Feast. However, the service leaves something to be desired. We arrived for our 6.15pm reservation time, no one acknowledged us for about 5-10 minutes, it then took another 10 minutes to be sat. I asked to clarify if our 90 minute dining slot would be extended as it took 15-20 minutes to be sat which was agreed.
We had three kids with us and sat there for another 30 minutes with no one coming over to take our orders, bring us drinks etc. When we finally got someone's attention, she was super gracious and took us over even though we weren't in her section. She immediately got our orders in & the kids meals came out quick - even quicker than the drinks.
However, since we weren't in her section, we weren't seen all the time. Dirty plates/dishes stacked up, water wasn't ever filled up, drinks weren't replenished. etc.
It took ages for our second round of Chai Feast to come out, which by then took us to our 90 minute window and we had to get our desserts to go.
I love love love the food, music, and people but would suggest keeping slower service in mind when visiting.
In general, I like pretty much everything about this restaurant. Just one suggestion would be the following: Both live and ambient music are fine but it would be interesting to actually listen to music that is related to the restaurant's culture.
The food was delicious, as always. The server was helpful and friendly. All in all, a great experience.
While we understand restaurants are struggling during Covid, the value here is just not here any longer. They removed tabbouleh salad, replacing it with an ordinary green salad (with a 'persian' dressing). The servings are miniscule but prices higher. We froze throughout our dinner as there was no heat turned on, and despite asking to move, was seated by the door creating a cold draft. We found it quite dark, and our table candle snuffed out minutes after being seated, with no one bothering to relight it. I made several efforts to flag someone down to get a knife. The entertainment, flamenco dancers, were so loud that conversation was impossible.
