Elephant & Castle - Toronto King St.
Since 1977, Elephant & Castle has rolled out its well-worn welcome mat to anyone and everyone looking for a cracking good time. Whether that means cheering on your beloved team or chatting up your mates or simply savoring fresh made eats with a bit of jolly old England folded in here and there, this is the pub where you get your brit on.
Proximity to Mirvish theatre, and availability of seating, were the attraction or the restaurant when booking was made. Yet, we were not displeased by any of : food, ambiance, service; and so, we felt we received good value for money.
NOTE: There seemed to be no notice taken by staff, who had been informed at each encounter, that the evening was part of a 'special occasion' (attending theatre on wife's birthday); but, that was forgivable.
Waited for service, had to ask to order. Had to send order back, cold no taste. Order something different hummus much better
Staff was friendly and attentive. The food presentaion is good and the taste was great.
Steak and Mushroom Pie was delicious!
The Reuben sandwich is delicious and I always go for that. My dining mates have always raved about their choices. Fries could be better though. More incentive to order a side salad.
Good food. Great waitstaff. Close to theatre. Quick service.
Had the special of the day (Tuesday - pint and wings) and the food was very good. The service was attentive and prompt. The place was quieter than usual which was very good.
Honestly we go to E&C often, but this time was not great. We were a table of 8 by the bar. The service was OK but the food was cold. We had been waiting so long and had the Taylor Swift concert so we didn’t have time to wait for warm food. They couldn’t even find utensils for us.
The food is always delicious. Wait staff is very hardworking. Only negative is the noise which is common in most restaurants. At least we were seated comfortably and spaced well.
The wild mushroom tortellini in a white sauce? Delicious!M!
Service started slow with our drinks. Then we waited for an hour for our food which never came. Then we left. Waitress was nowhere to be seen. Never getting your food should rate a zero but the program requires me to give it at least one
Fantastic server, some food disapointments. Stuffed Yorkshire Pudding was served with simply awful tasteless gravy over less than fresh tasting beef but in a terrific yorkie. Good Castle Club sandwich. Would recommend to a friend with caution about menu selection.
Overall experience was good. My friends and I went to watch the final World Cup game. I'm glad they have TVs everywhere and our seats were in pretty good view of some as requested. Service was a bit slow and there was some confusion with who ordered what when we received our bills, but no big deal. I like this place and would totally come back!
We had a good evening, and the service was prompt and the staff friendly. Each serving easily met the standards of "down-to-earth pub food."
We had great food at a moderate price - friendly prompt service - noisy , busy atmosphere but
not unexpected. Would highly recommend when going to the theatre or concert hall.
Had lunch here before the play. Food was excellent as was the service. Will definitely be back.
Great food - great service - convenient - I will visit again!
Out for dinner and a theatre show. Overall great experience, if there was anything to offer for improvement purposes would be signs pointing to where the restrooms are and our server wasn’t very attentive to us having empty glasses.
Our server (if she wore a name tag I cannot recall her name) went above and beyond to provide us with excellent service. At our request, she had the music turned down and switched to a playlist more suitable to our taste.
Food was excellent! Prices are adequate for eating in Toronto. Service was great at the beginning. I did find once it became busier, the waitress was a bit slow returning to our table. Very friendly atmosphere and staff.
The serve was friendly but hard to find during dinner. The food was like warm and when we complained about it we were given an apology, however the replacement was the same temperature. Given the time window before the show we continued on with what we had. Perhaps more attention needs to be directed at food preparation/quality.
The kitchen is heartless, as was evident in both preparation and presentation of its menu. I thought having a limited menu would help back-of-house "get it right" even when in the weeds. I was painfully wrong. There is no soul in that joyless kitchen. And mine and my dining companions and those around my table would agree based solely on the look of their meal. If it were not for its prime location I suspect the Elephant & Castle would no longer be in existence. I had wings and fries which were anemic and rubbery (asked for sauce on the side because kitchens tend to over dress them). Two of 10 wings were undercooked and left on the plate. Our lovely server, on the other hand, was efficient and very pleasant. I didn't have the heart to complain to her. It was only wings, after all. And I wouldn't have offered my opinion on Yelp or what have you, but since you asked...
We have been to the E&C many times over many years but this was our worst visit. Food was cold when it arrived and the fish (Fish & Chips) had a crust on it which defied cutting. Sorry to see things going down hill.
A convenient place for lunch before theatre at the Princess of Wales. Good variety of choices between brunch and lunch menus. We allowed ourselves 11/2 hours and had plenty of time to eat, relax and walk to theatre. It was nice to be able to make a reservation to eliminate worries of not getting a table and being late.
Enjoyed our visit to the Elephant & Castle prior to the performance at the Royal Alexandra. French Dip sandwich was excellent whereas the Fish & Chips were mediocre. Was it frozen fish by chance? Craft beers were excellent.
In theatre district on King St. typical menu of roadhouse - y fare, but well presented and very tasty. Big place. For matinee shows, book no later than noon seating.
Not only was the food good but our waiter - Guy - was outstanding...
he is a good ambassador for the E & C...
he's a keeper...
The staff was the highlight of our experience. We had our 6 year old granddaughter with us (pre theatre) and all of the staff were wonderful. The online reservation was simple and although we had to cancel 2 of our party due to traffic issues, they were very accommodating. The food was good too. All in all - a delightful experience.
It was a great lunch...food was very good. Service was satisfactory. The restaurant itself was very clean and well run!
Great place for dining before theatre and/or sporting event.
Elephant and Castle is always reliable in terms of menu options and quality of food. I have been there often. The restaurant was quite busy on Sunday as I am sure there were many diners heading to the nearby theatres after their lunch. Service can be a bit slow so give yourself plenty of time if you have some place to be. It is a pleasant atmosphere but it was extremely warm inside during our visit. I think the heat was still on even though it was warm and muggy outside. The server was pleasant and the food was good.
We went for lunch before the theatre. It's in a great location if you want to be close to the theatre. The service was good and the food came out in a timely manner. Everything we had was tasty. I would not hesitate to return.
Had lunch before theatre. Early reservation. Welcomed nicely. Seemed a little understaffed and not as prepared as they might for the bus load of people who arrived later. Waiter was excellent, apologized for slow service and gave a fee dessert. Can not remember his name.
We actually had lots of time because we were early. Certainly would return when back in the area. Good food and excellent server.
After waiting one and a half hours we did not receive out meals. As we had tickets for a play, we had to leave without eating any lunch. Very disappointing. We won’t be back.
Fantastic meal pre- show at Roy Thompson and still had a screen to watch the 1st period of the Leaf game.
Our first time at Elephant and Castle but won't be our last! Food was terrific, service fast and efficient and price was excellent.
Our lunch was very disappointing! We ordered drinks - one came and the rest didn’t. Asked our server and she said she would put the rest of drink order in. We still didn’t get them so we cancelled. Our food was so slow in coming and then was only luke warm. We asked to speak to manager and she said they were extremely busy and would give one free dessert. She apologized and took 25% of bill. We have been to E & C and it is often busy but we get much better service. Going to see a play next Sunday but will look for another place to eat.
We were there before our theatre reservation, the atmosphere was friendly and robust, it was a busy restaurant but did not lack in service, the food was delicious and we didn't have to wait long. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and i would go back again.
We waited forever for our order to be taken, we arrived at noon, there was lots of empty tables but it filled up quickly. Once they finally came over to take our orders it took forever to get them. I ordered calamari and it was the worst calamari I had ever had. Mostly batter crumbs! However, the rest of my group enjoyed their meal.
Very happy with everything . Waiter was very accommodating knowing we were off to the theatre. Food was great
This has become a pre-theatre regular spot for my group. They had changed the menu a little and it was missing a few items I used to love, but it's alright. I remember it being better.
