Chef Duncan’s techniques using fresh, local ingredients bring new and unusual flavours to Calgarians who seek new gourmet dining experiences. Imagine house-made charcuterie infused with crisp Asian spices and a room styled after the elegance of colonial Vietnam with some modern surprises.
Food was a little slow coming out of the kitchen. Please bring back the beef tartar !!!!
Foreign Concept never fail to extend an amazing dining experience especially with impeccable special Food & Drink Exp 3-course menu.
Great hospitality Chef Duncan Ly and his staff.
Has been and will always be my top 3 dining spots in Calgary, AB.
Amidst the coronavirus scare, we decided to venture out of our house into -20 weather to take advantage of The YYC Food and Drink Experience special menu. The restaurant was very quiet for a Friday, but we didn’t mind. The special gourmet menu was fantastic and the service was even better. Our server Brody was very welcoming and made sure that we were well taken care of. He was attentive without being annoying which I hate when a restaurant is slow.
Great service, delicious food. Couldn’t ask for more.
Went for the 5 course gourmet meal with my fiancé and it was one of the best meals we’ve ever had. We are excited to return and try some of their regular menu items.
The food was very good but the server appeared to be looking after too many tables. She seemed to be very rushed. Wine was late - came half way through main course. The very serious problem for us was the level of noise. My wife and I were sitting across the table from each other and we couldn't hear what the other one was saying!! We were between 2 parties of 4 and this added to the noise problem. We like the restaurant, especially the food, but when we return I hope it will be a quieter place. Perhaps a table out by the bar would be better.
Went to Foreign Concept for the YYC Food and Drink Experience. Food was really excellent, portions were perfectly sized, the beef short rib was particularly good.
Always love my dining experience at Foreign Concept. The food was outstanding, the service was great and the price was especially amazing during the Food & Drink Experience event that is happening city wide right now. Highly recommend to everyone who is looking for a good dining experience with a twist of traditional Asian food.
Such an amazing night. Fabulous food, lovely wine, fantastic, well-timed service. Loved it. :)
Had the $65 gourmet meal during YYC food week. It was excellent! Loved that the noise level was low so we could easily have conversation, and the service was excellent too.
Food was amazing and service was great! I would definitely go back!
I loved your brussel sprouts and all of the food was delicious,
Food was great, service quick and friendly. Noise level a bit high for conversation.
I would highly recommend FC as a lunch meeting venue: great service, great food and an overall great experience.
Excellent presentation and balance of flavours served well in a calm dining atmosphere. Simply, it was great.
Tasty food served in a timely and courteous manner
Amazing food, decent service. Will definitely go there again
My partner is vegetarian and it was disappointing to find no vegetarian options on the large plate menu. When we inquired about options our server was confused like it was the first time she came across a vegetarian. We then chose the rice dish (minus the meat) but it took them 3 attempts to get it right. Mine was then cold by the time they got it right.
I was also brought 2 glasses of wine when I ordered by two different servers. They took back one but left me with the wine I hadn’t ordered.
The other dishes were excellent and the environment is great.
Our experience at Foreign Concept was very strange. We obviously had a reservation through OpenTable but we were not seated in the restaurant. They sat us in the more casual 'cafe' area (not even photographed on their website). We thought it was odd but maybe we were just being picky? We weren't be, we overheard the two tables that sat next to us both mention, 'why aren't we sitting in the restaurant?'
The food was okay. For appetizers we had the tuna tartare and beef carpaccio - both were good. But for meals, we had the squid ink pasta and hanger steak. The steak was so tough it was almost inedible. The pasta was so buttery. I like butter, but it was a lot.
I wouldn't recommend this place. We likely won't return.
We were very impressed with the food. Similar sized portions to other restaurants of this type. This restaurant has two separate seating areas, an east and west area. Our experience likely would have been much better if we had sat on the east side of the restaurant. The west side of the restaurant feels like the seating area of a mall food court. The tables were so small that we couldn’t fit two large plates and a single small plate on the table. The couple beside us ordered 4 dishes and had to put their first dish in a to go box on the floor to make room on their table for the rest of their dishes. The same couple also had a room divider knocked into them as one of the servers was trying to squeeze by. The east side of the restaurant is much nicer and if I were to make another reservation I would specifically request to be seated on the east side.
I honestly expected more. The Brussels sprouts appetizer was incredible. I could’ve eaten an entire meal of just those. My fiancé’s steak tasted really greasy, like it had been tossed in a deep fryer. It didn’t really taste like it had been seasoned at all. The char siu pork and fois gras steamed buns doesn’t actually come with any fois gras - the whole reason I ordered that dish. The sides were really flavourful, the steamed buns were really fluffy and delicious, but again, the pork didn’t have much flavour itself. However, it fell apart like a dream.
There are three sections, which I believe are different restaurants operating out of the same kitchen. The wait between our appetizer and entrée was just over an hour. It was busy, but that’s a long time...no matter where you are, especially when you’re paying more.
During our wait, our server kept our glasses full, and the person working the pass came over and sincerely apologized to us a couple times.
The restaurant itself has a comfy vibe, small and intimate, low lit, it’s nice. It’s not really loud, so you can easily enjoy conversations. There’s just simple non-vocal EDM/minimal music playing in the background.
I had such high hopes for this place. We don’t go out much - like a couple times a year - so I have to say, I was kind of disappointed in the food.
Every category was absolutely wonderful.
Next visit will be on my birthday for sure.
Excellent dinner! Really enjoyed all the great flavours. Great wine and service.
I love Vietnamese food so when I saw their menu I was really excited to try their Mango Slaw and the Cha Ca, both dishes didn't disappoint and were great interpretation of the real thing. I hope they had more Vietnamese inspired dish on their menu! The service was a bit slow in the beginning because there was an hockey game and they were packed, but as soon as people left for the game the services was good.
Thanks for the great dinner!
Excellent food and service only comment was that they just had a bottle left of a nice Brunello and we were 10 people. Probably best to warn us this was the case as we were clearly going to drink more wine. Otherwise spotless service and fantastic food.
Been here twice, mainly to see if it was a one hit wonder, or if it would match up to our first experience (which was awesome). Good news, they’re consistent!! We had as good of a time as our first time. Food, service and ambiance are all consistent. If this place isn’t on your list, add it right now. It’s amazing!
As a child, my father made the best rainbow trout. Foreign Concept came in a close 2nd. Glad I had the trout.
Yummmmm. Beautiful and delicious food. Would suggest going with a larger group of people so you can as many things as possible!
Excellent meal, each dish was unique while being traditional and executed perfectly!
Fantastic Lunar New Year dinner at Chef Ly's flagship restaurant. A perfect 5 course-menu prepared with finesse.
Please bring back the beef tartar!
We absolutely loved all the fantastic flavors combined in a still very healthy meal!
Overall was very good , not a single dish I would not order again . Had a few modifications to make celiac friendly and had no problems.
Interesting food, gourmet twist on Asian comfort favourites. A couple small plates and one large plate was plenty to share between two people. The pork belly char siu baos were a delicious combo of flavours. Also had the tuna tartare and kimchi which certainly had some spicy kick! Would come back again to try other dishes
Foreign Concept is one of YYC’s best places to get really fine food in a fairly casual but classy environment. Love this place.
Shared five appetizers and three entrees between four of us and everyone was sufficiently full. Lots of great flavours and fun dishes. Cocktails were great. NYE meant slow service but understandable given the volume.
Second time going for New Years and the food was outstanding plus a great value for the 5 course menu. Will be back !
The table was next to the base heater and was far too hot.
Very slow but good food
