Chef Duncan’s techniques using fresh, local ingredients bring new and unusual flavours to Calgarians who seek new gourmet dining experiences. Imagine house-made charcuterie infused with crisp Asian spices and a room styled after the elegance of colonial Vietnam with some modern surprises.
We wanted to so badly to like Foreign Concept. However, the entire evening was a dud. Food was mediocre at best. “Fusion” takes a nose dive when you dumb down authentic flavours and it takes an even farther nose dive when it’s served cold. Not one item we ordered was to temperature and the most expensive item on the menu, the 14 oz steak, was bland and very much needed salt and pepper. The 72 hr sous vide short ribs were bland as well served along cold mashed potatoes.
Food was very good but waited a long time to get a soup and a salad. Our diners seemed to get their food quicker.
A wonderful dining experience celebrating my wife's birthday. It was everything and more than what we were told. And, thanks so much, to Duncan (owner/chef) for coming out to say "hi."
This place knocked my socks off. Decided to try their Mother's day dim sum style brunch and was thoroughly impressed. They had great seafood, amazing "pastries" which were like sweet breads and the best brisket I have ever had. My mom asked me how to eat the brisket with chop sticks and we soon found out that it was so tender there was no cutting required, literally melt in your mouth. Our server was great and the cook fellow at the brisket station took great care of me putting together a platter of brisket and Kim chi and sauce for our table to share. Thanks for making my mothers day brunch a success, will highly recommend this spot to everyone!
Checked out the Mothers Day Brunch. We liked the variety/difference from standard fair but few of the dishes could be called remarkable. Some of the hot dishes were only lukewarm and the vietnamese crepes were greasy and nearly tasteless. Dessert table had a limited selection and was disappointing as well.
Great food, never needed to ask for my water to be filled. The pork belly and the rice were standout hits- just beware because it rings up pretty fast
One of our favs in Calgary, owing to the food which is hands down top 5 in Calgary. Ok parking on the street close by, pleasant reception, not really a bad table here. Favorite dishes - the char siu, cauliflower, seafood spaghetti and more! The tenderloin fried rice was a little salty. Otherwise, great service and a nice evening. We’ll be back for sure.
We had a lovely lunch here. It is an attractive, comfortable space and nice and quiet for talking. Service was excellent and we all enjoyed the food. Very interesting/fun potato chip appetizer. I would definitely go back.
Accommodated my dietary restrictions very well. The food was great. Good selection of gluten free, lactose free, pork free, crustacean free, peanut free options. And the staff was very friendly and approachable. The restaurant is beautifully decorated.
Great space! Good food. The value for the food was not there but when you come to a place this, I do not expect that. The service was excellent, the only hiccup was I ordered another cocktail and it took longer to arrive as the bartender was personally attending to a larger table and pouring their wine and so was not able to make my cocktail in a timely fashion.
really good food
The food was excellent! I think this will now be one of our top restaurants for date night. It wasn’t too loud, great ambience, great service and delicious food!
As always impeccable, delicious food with friendly, efficient service!
We really enjoyed the food and atmosphere, the service was spot on and for a busy night, we didn’t feel rushed. The quality of the food was excellent and I would recommend anyone to dine here. I’ll be back.
My husband and I were impressed with the food and service. The servers all took their time to discuss and address any allergy concerns prior to ordering and came back to check on us often to ask how our meal was. Would definitely come back again.
Absolutely one of the best meals I have ever ate. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Amazing experience
We had a great time for my wife's birthday the steamed pork buns were excellent. Service was great as well.
The trout was exceptional! Highly recommend. We quite enjoyed the squid ink spaghetti, tartare and imperial roll as well. Despite myself not caring for the dessert my partner loved it. Our service was attentive but not overbearing and very friendly. The decor and ambiance are wonderful! We’d go back in a heartbeat and will recommend to everyone.
Excellent meal Tremendous variety of flavours. Interesting combinations. Loved the short rib, brussel sprouts, beets and the tuna!
Foreign Concept has a unique menu. It's definitely a different take on Asian! There's a lot of amazing options to choose from so I think you need to go more than once to experience the diversity their menu has to offer. The ambience in the restaurant is wonderful. I didn't find it so noisy that you can't shoot a good visit. I recommend giving it a try!
A fantastic meal and great service. I will definitely be back.
Always consistently amazing. I love everything on the menu. Especially the pork buns. Best ever!!!
My wife and I went to Foreign Concept on a recent Monday evening. We booked a reservation, though there were available tables at 6:30pm. The menu of entrees and small plates looked fabulous, however we opted for a nice selection of small plates, including charred rainbow carrots, braised brussels sprouts, Imperial rolls, crispy chicken and golden beets. The food presentation was nicely done and the flavours were excellent. Our service was friendly and efficient. We will return to Foreign Concept!
We enjoyed our dinner at Foreign Concept. Although the prices are slightly expensive, we enjoyed discovering new tastes and sharing dishes. The seared tuna was delicious!
This is my go to restaurant for bringing groups of friends and family. The food is amazing. The combination of flavours and share plates means that everyone loves something and keeps us interacting with each other. It’s more of a holistic experience to be dining, talking about the food, and connecting with each other. Speedy fun service and an excellent liquor menu is the icing on the delicious cake. Best in the city for quality, value and fun.
Excellent food and service!
Amazing food. Everything on the menu was excellent. Between us I think our group shared one of everything.
Awesome place for a special dinner. Food was unique & exceptional. Service was outstanding.
Wonderful, yummy & thankfully gluten free!!!
Food was very tasty! The way they are plated and proportioned make each dish good for sharing! Brussels sprouts were amazing! Our server was great with helping us pick what to get. All staff members did seem to be a little flustered however, for it was busy for a Wednesday and there were only two servers, resulting in a slower service. Would love to come back to try more dishes.
Not a lot of selection for wine by the glass.
We had a condensed milk parfait for dessert which fell pretty flat. Nothing too exciting flavour wise and served in a weird red glass box which hides all the layering and isn’t too visually appealing.
I would recommend trying this place out with a larger group in order to be able to try more dishes in one go.
Wonderful meal. Will be back again to try more of the menu.
Always a great meal and they take allergies serious. Great people great food
Did the yyc 5 course meal. Wine pairing was phenomenal. Good on the sommelier. The braised beef was very tough and difficult to chew. Good flavor and presentation. The desert needs work. Felt like it was made overnight, left in the fridge and taken out and served. Bad ending to an otherwise good meal.
My client and I have been here before, so our expectations were pretty high. We were a little underwhelmed with the appys, the kimchi didn’t have the kick I hoped for, and the Brussels sprouts were over-cooked. We actually didn’t finish them. First time in this restaurant.
The mains were better: Forbidden Rice and the Trout were good but they didn’t really shout out.
I come here for bold flavours, but it didn’t happen this time.
Maybe just an off night.
Food was delicious; service was good and the atmosphere relaxing. Honey butter chips were so good. First impression, excellent.
Got the 5-course meal for the food & drink experience event going on. The char siu pork belly dish and the poached lobster dish were amazing! Wish they were bigger portions though. The flavours in the 4th course, angus beef short rib galbi with turnip kimchi, wasn’t nearly as strong as Korean food usually is. The purée was quite good, but overall the dish was lacklustre. Would go back to try their regular menu!
This was the YYC food and drink menu and the food was absolutely awesome so much flavour and such beauty
Did the YYC Food and Drink Experience with wine pairings. Their menu was exceptional! TOP NOTCH. Service is excellent, pleasing restaurant decor. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.
Food was outstanding! Service was impeccable, our servers were wonderfully friendly and very patient when it came to splitting our bill at the end of the night. Would definitely recommend. Thank you for a fabulous experience.
The Bao Buns, Duck and Brussels Sprouts were delicious, however the rest of the dishes fell fairly flat. Flavours were underwhelming for the higher cost.
