Between the central locale afforded by its gracious home in the landmark Lord Elgin Hotel, a warm and yet contemporary ambience, a locally sourced menu and a casual-to-sophisticated stocked cellar, Forty-One has become one of Ottawa’s top new restaurants.

Named Forty-One in recognition of the year, 1941, that the Lord Elgin was built, the restaurant features a modern environment and classic menu that is a perfect match for connecting with new and familiar faces. Guests are able to relax in the inviting lounge with flat screen TVs and large windows overlooking Elgin Street or enjoy an intimate dinner or a group get together in the dining area. With a capacity of close to 150, the restaurant features booths and banquette seating to allow flexibility to accommodate guest needs whether they are popping in for lunch, a quick after-work cool-down, a pre-theatre warm-up or an evening night cap. Forty-One also includes a private dining room for up to 30 guests.

    Wonderful service. Went for breakfast (second time). Awesome french toast. This time around I ordered the topping on the side so I could control the amount of toppings.

    Apparently there was a wedding party at the same time we were dining. I think they should have cancelled dining completely for anything other than wedding party. There was no way of us knowing there was a wedding because it was in a separate room. We waited 1.5 hours for our dinner. The server came after one hour to tell us that the dish we ordered takes longer to prepare. She offered us soup and nuts from the bar. When our meal arrived, mine was burnt. The server brought us complimentary coffee and dessert and our bill was discounted by one meal. It was very disappointing overall. There were many other diners that were also very disappointed. If they had told us that there was going to be a long wait from the get go, we would have gone elsewhere. By the time we would have left, found a new place to dine, ordered and ate- it would have been longer we thought. We did go back in the morning for breakfast and it was great. I really believe that dining should have been cancelled. They did not do themselves any favours that’s for sure.

    I thought this would be a high end restaurant, but it was more like a mom and pop breakfast place. Granted it was remembrance day, it wasnt overly busy, and the servers were struggling to get orders in and food out. They started telling people the a la carte menu would take 'a while' for them to get their food. We ordered eggs benedict from the a la carte menu, which took about 40mins minutes to get. The food was mediocre and the juice and tea and latte was garbage. The home fries tasted like they were sitting around for hours. They left tables full of garbage and used plates for 20-30 minutes before bussing them. They charge top tier prices, but we were very disappointed.

    Service was friendly, well-paced, respectful and courteous. Appetizers of mushroom soup and mushroom toast were delicious. Chicken club was hearty and delicious. Chicken with veggies a little dry and chewy. Price was reasonable. Ambiance was pleasant but could benefit from candles or flowers on the table. Lighting on upper level was dim and hard to read the menu but would recommend upper level for view outside.

    Service for food was very long. Could hear table behind us complaining about wait time during whole dinner as well. Food was same quality as a Kelsey’s or Montana’s. Fake candles on table were tacky. Very disappointed as guests at the Lord Elgin for hotel restaurant to be a 2-star experience for a 4-star hotel. Would not come back. Also requested a booth in reservation but hostess sat us at table. I then asked during drink order to relocate to an open booth I saw.

    Too dark had to use the phone to read the menu. Great service except the main arrived as they cleared my starter. Putine was cold but that much food it didn't matter I didn't eat it.

    Just another average restaurant in a big hotel. Really, grill 41 is below average. In just about every aspect. We chose the place because they accept reservations til 2300. Our concert ended at 2130 so all seemed to be going well. But the place was dead. The host was literally disappointed to hear we were there for dinner. Wine choices were pedestrian. Service was halting. The nachos were the highlight of our visit. Now THAT should tell you something. Steer clear.

    I am so sorry to hear that our service standards in the restaurant was not up to par. That is not our typical procedure. One of our key principals here at the Lord Elgin is “Always do the right thing” which we believe is a pillar for the hospitality industry. For us, doing the right thing means attempting to serve our guests every way we can. I recognize that in this instance we have not lived up to our normal standards so I am truly sorry.     Unorganized serving staff, food was pretty good considering the service wasn’t. Needs to be more attentive to customers, you can clearly tell the serving staff didn’t know what was going on, who’s being or has been served.

    Food was excellent. Lots of variety . Friendly service I thought it was a bit overpriced. It might be because of the location (?)? I would only recommend if you have money to burn $300 for 4 people for mostly breakfast type food is a bit excessive…. But then again I guess everything post the Vid is excessive and over priced

    We went for Easter Brunch. We were very disappointed that there was no prime rib carving station as advertised on the Easter Brunch menu. This significantly decreased the value. The rest of the buffet food was decent. We particularly enjoyed the omelette station. Service was excellent.

    We went for the Easter brunch and it was 150$ including tax and tips for two people. I really didn’t see why it was so expansive. There was no fruits, high end food or mimosa that would’ve made me understand the 60$/person. There should be either better food, alcohol included or simply be less expansive. I was borderline insulted and felt a bit scammed.

    Service was a bit slow. Also didn’t come back too often to see how we were doing and if we needed anything. Dessert took forever to get. It was just sorbet. Food was very good.

    I was there for lunch recently. My first visit since the pandemic. Good food, nice presentation and good service. The restaurant was fairly busy but the noise level was low. I will definitely return.

    It was all very positive, except there was a hair in my lunch companion’s soup. The serving staff quickly acted, brought a new soup and offered to take it off the bill.

    Unfortunately, when we were at Grill 51, it was not very busy. I think the ambiance would have been much better with more diners. We were there pre-theatre for a performance at the National Arts Centre so it may have been busier later in the evening. The service could not have been better - friendly, efficient. Food was good. Not the best we have ever had but, for a restaurant in a Hotel, I think it was more than acceptable. We would recommend Grill 51.

    Our servers were very pleasant and helpful in finding a table we were happy with. Unfortunately we waited almost an hour for our meals, still not sure what the hold up was. The food was good but overall found the meal to be overpriced. The chocolate torte cake was amazing, best I've ever had!

    Touted as a steakhouse, but only had 3 steak options on the menu and no traditional “steakhouse appetizers” on the menu such as shrimp cocktail, bacon wrapped scallops, etc. They did have side dishes of shrimp and scallop skewers, that you could add to your entrée, which we did. I asked for horseradish for my entrée and cocktail sauce for the skewers, but they had no horseradish, and therefore couldn’t make a cocktail sauce. A little disappointing. Steaks were cooked well, but nothing exceptional.

    Nice wine, nice appetizers, lovely service. Reasonable prices. Quiet until rather inappropriate music was turned on after 5:00 p.m. Everything was very nice; the only disappointment was that music, which then made conversation difficult. And it wasn't music befitting the atmosphere generally.

    The menu was super short. We basically had to choose from 3 mains which all included pork of some kind. Both of the steaks were under cooked. The service was just ok. Overall wouldn’t recommend or visit this this spot again.

On special occasions we offer specialty menus other than the regular a la carte, and menu items are modifiable such as the cooking temperature and protein in the dish to best suit all dietary restrictions. Unfortunately, we didn't offer any pork items on our specialty menu we offered, but we will always be happy to modify the protein in the dish to best suit our guests' dietary needs.
