Friedmans is a family run business, which operates locations throughout New York City. Friedmans was named after the famous economist Milton Friedman who popularized the phrase, “there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch”. This phrase has gone on to be used in science, economics, finance, statistics, technology, sports, & now food. However, to put it simply, “to get one thing we like, we usually have to give up another thing we like.”
Our mantra is simple, “Eat good food” and this is what we strive to deliver to our guests. For us, it has two meanings. Firstly, eat food that tastes good. Secondly, be proud of the food you serve. We know where our food comes from. We communicate regularly with our farmers and are proud to serve antibiotic free meats & local vegetables. Our mission is for you to love, respect, & enjoy, not only the food you serve, but also the team you work with.

My friend and I had a great lunch at Freidman's! The Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup were delish !!! Service was great, they did not rush us at all even though the restaurant was crowded! The only thing was the place was a little loud, but manageable !!! Go and enjoy !!!

Huge fan or the OTHER Friedman’s location. But here? Food was okay, service was fine. But what OpenTable doesn’t show is that from 5-8pm Wed-Sun they have “singing waiters” and if you’re into it, great. But I didn’t want Stardust Diner I wanted a quiet dinner with my family. This was not it, food was marginal, and we couldn’t talk to each other at all. Terrible experience due to lack of info from OpenTable. If they advertised it I wouldn’t have chosen this place.

We were EXTREMELY disappointed to find that there was now live LOUD singing of showtunes by the servers. I love Friedman’s -the food & service & ambience This ruined the experience entirely The singing was insanely loud and non-stop & there was no where in the restaurant to escape it. I will never return to this branch. It ruined our dinner. I didn’t go to Ellen’s Stardust but to Friedman’s. Very disappointing

While I love the idea of waitstaff singing in the restaurant , the volume was ridiculously high. It was impossible to have any conversation when they were performing. It does interfere somewhat with your service as your server is busy singing. That said you have to admire their talent and desire to sing.

Wow, they have ruined the oasis that was once Friedman's in an otherwise culinary black hole that is the central theater district. Nowhere in the immediate vicinity could one find such an array of gluten free options, terrific price point, personable and attentive service, and its terrific space harking back to its architectural origin. What was a mellow happy hour vibe has been shattered by management's pandering to the tourist set by incorporating roving "waitstaff" screeching show tunes into blaring microphones that make conversation impossible and the torture quickly causes a migraine and nausea. However, the adolescent tik tok crowd and their parents were in heaven. We found ourselves in hell. So we immediately left after a "performer" sidled up to our booth and leaned in with her mic and hit a note which rung in our ears for the five block walk to another restaurant. So, it seems to be working economically, since what was once a moderately busy Friedman's was teeming with customers enjoying themselves. So it goes...

This was a great experience! There was so much great gluten free food available and the prices were reasonable for Manhattan. My food was not marked with the gluten free flag as promised, but that was my only complaint.

Food was good but was not aware that the restaurant had performing /singing waiters. We found it very difficult to have a conversation at the table as hard to hear. The volume was too way loud for a restaurant with no breaks in music. Would not go back.

Let it be said that OpenTable really should warn members that Weds-Sat the waitstaff become performing singers throughout dinner service. This isn’t really our scene as native New Yorkers, but thought it had potential to being a good time so we leaned in. Plus, we wanted the OT points. They’re all very talented but the song selection is literally every high belting show stopping number with no breaks in between - or any consideration that people are also trying to enjoy dinner. The acoustics of the venue leave it impossible to have a conversation while you enjoy your gluten free meal before whatever Broadway show you’re heading to later. Our server in particular was very good, but upon looking at other tables I saw people searching for their server who was either lost in their karaoke track or too busy singing back up at the waiter station to bring their table a refill or their bill. The worst part was probably Gayle, the namesake for the performing troop, who approached our table exactly one moment after our food was dropped and someone was belting a number on the microphone. This wild haired woman holding a ratty cloth hat for tips wouldn’t take the hint that we were trying to eat our food while it was warm. Instead of coming back to our table when we were finished eating as requested she took a step closer and screamed over the music to scan the QR code to tip her performers (which she probably takes a cut out of) - when we told her that we are aware of how QR codes work she gave us a dirty look and stared at us from her post at the exit for most of the rest of our meal. The food? Good! Falafel was dry, grain bowl was delicious and Fish & Chips was expensive for what it was - not sure I’d ever return. Wishing all the performers well!

We enjoyed our food in what appears to be a somewhat historic location. Large portions, freshly and properly cooked (a rave from my husband for the salmon that was cooked rare, as requested, in his salad), service was prompt and attentive. A good place to go before or after the theater. Prepare to spend some serious money for simple things like bacon and eggs, but our salads were plentiful for the price, as were the sandwiches ordered by our friends.

Our experience was phenomenal! I was looking for a place near our venue for the night with safe, gluten free options. I was so glad to find Friedman’s with nearly the entire menu available as gluten free. And delighted when I read that our servers would be broadway singers and singing their way through our dinner. Our experience was perfect to kick off our NYC eve!

This was a let down. Friedman’s is a favorite of mine and my fiancé and I love dining here before our date nights to the theatre, but the brunch before our matinee was a big miss. The stars given were for the friendly and prompt service of the hosting staff who greeted us and sat us promptly (very busy so get your reservation in!). The lavender collins was a great drink that we both enjoyed but the experience from there fell off. We have three maybe even four different people take our orders, bring out our food/drinks, check in on us, and give us our check. At the end we just flagged down whoever. I know it’s busy but having a designated server or being informed that it was all hands on deck would have been helpful. The food was lackluster. Pancakes when hot were okay but they came rubbery and tough when they cooled and the e syrup didn’t soak in but ran off. The blueberry compote was almost bitter and didn’t help the situation. The Egg and Hash my fiancé got required him to salt and pepper the crap out of it, no flavor what so ever. The dinner menu usually is pretty good but I was so upset that I had to review the brunch. Overall I would not recommend it and I hope improvements can be made.

The food is always great, and as a diner with celiac I appreciate the attention to detail regarding allergies. But the addition of the singers at this location is AWFUL. The noise level is unbearable—it’s impossible to have a conversation—and we were actually approached by Gayle herself and more or less forced to tip for the music, which we felt was really pushy and uncomfortable. We appreciated that we got a table up front by the window as we requested (to be as far from the noise as possible!) and our server herself was fine, but we had to ask three different staff members three times for plates for our appetizer and never got them. Everyone was distracted by the performers. As a location in the theater district, with diners usually trying to get to a show on time, I’d expect a little better.

I was unfamiliar with this restaurant, but the reviews looked good. The interior looks nice, and everyone is friendly. However, the service was abysmal and the pastrami sandwich I ordered was perhaps the worst I have ever had. My companion ordered macaroni and cheese which was a nice sized portion and very tasty. Fortunately, it was oversized and enough for me to have some. My aforementioned pastrami sandwich showed up about 20 minutes later. It smelled and looked great. However, 1 bite informed me that it was 90% fat and grizzle. It was such a poor-quality meat, that I couldn't even cut it with a knife. I would have sent it back, but we were pre-theater and didn't have the time. I put it aside, paid the bill and ran over to Shake Shack. We made the show in time.
