Food is very innovative and tasty that I would recommend friends to go. Service was great during the dinner and the servers are very knowledgeable of the dishes and ingredients. It is a small restaurant and music was soft but somehow a bit noisy and hard to hear the servers full description of the dishes. Part of the reason might be someone at the next table speaking too loud. One thing I want to comment is the flexibility. We were 1st one to be at the restaurant and was given a table for 3 by the window. It was sunny so we asked to have the next table not by the window. They were set up for 2 people but all you need to do is to put 2 tables together and split the other tables into 2 of 2 seater. This is a 1 min thing but the waiter refused to do and insisted us to take the window seat and put down the blind. If the other tables were taken, I could understand but being first in the restaurant,...
Food was delicious, fresh and very creative. We enjoyed every single dish. The portion was just right for me but my husband may have a different opinion on that. Service was impeccable. $95 for a tasting menu of this quality is not bad at all but $65 for wine paring seems a bit on the expensive side relative to the price of the food. Would definitely recommend this place.
Food and service are excellent. Unfortunately it was very noise in the restaurant. I hardly hear what the server when they introduce their food.
Firstly the staff were fantastic, attentive, informative and hospitable while not overservicing
Secondly the tasting menu with 10 selections was exceptional - very creative dishes and we couldnt come up with a favourite - delicious and beautifully presented and for $95 super value.
The wine parings were not to our taste with a bit too much Sake so we opted for ordering from the wine list - while not extensive there is enough to choose from on the wine list both by glass and bottle
My only negative comment is we found it a bit warm early on with the sun beating in but it cooled down later in the evening - best recommendation we can give is we rebooked to take our friends there in a couple of weeks
A wonderful culinary adventure!!!! So glad to have a restaurant of this calibre in Thornhill!
It is a pleasure to dine in a restaurant where everyone really cares about what they do. This was evident throughout our experience; the passion and care shone through. We will definitely be back.
It’s honestly so thrilling stepping through the front door not knowing what to expect. I came during the winter & spring menu and I became such a fan. Staff is super friendly. We could go on and on talking about food. You could really see the passion and love for food.
Winter menu: This menu filled me just enough that I didn’t hate myself afterwards. Every dish warmed my belly but at the same time felt very clean and light. (The best menu I had)
Spring menu: very unique take on vegetables and Japanese techniques. Mix between salty, sweet and savoury flavours. Wasn’t my favourite menu but plating was beautiful!
The food is so good and the service is good too, I will back again
We love food and Frilu NEVER disappoints!! We think this is the best tasting menu experience in the City and the non-alcoholic pairing it always perfect and enjoyable.
It was a plesant dining experience!! Some flavour profiles and techniques were interesting and delicious. Housemade cider and peach kombucha was a delight!!
The food was amazing and the service was very attentive, waiters were knowledgeable about the food and happy to elaborate.
I normally do not get wine pairing for a 'tasting menu', but since it was our anniversary, I did. I am SO GLAD that I did. My fiance also got the non-alcohol pairing, which I really appreciated that they have. Our server Neil was great! He explained every dish and pairing to us very well and very detailed. All the dishes were great, my particular favourite was the "lamb brede". Food, service and atmosphere was awesome. I would definitely want to come again when the menu is changed.
Food was conceptually interesting and execution was a bit unbalanced. We were excited to see the menu. Each dish had one item that didn't work for us. The daikon on the lamb was bland. The creme fresh didn't match the shrimps fragility. The lemon dab on the root was odd. The greens with ground oyster had almonds when the highlight flavor is to be the oyster. Service was strong and well done with the exception of one lady in black dress who asked for our dining feedback and then got defensive. Overall a nice start. Looking to see more iterations of the menu to compete with similar kinds of menus downtown.
Amazing staff, amazing food. Menu changes per season so expect something different, the chefs put in their work and the staff as a whole are friendly and knowledgeable.
Worth every dollar.
I think from concept to execution the food was amazing. It really emulated what the menu's concept was. I had a lot of fun at Frilu and the sommelier and waiters were really nice and friendly. It was even a great addition to actually meet the chef himself who came up with the restaurant.
My only downfall was just the pairing of the sake and the food however I'm generally not a big sake drinker.
The canales are sososo good! All courses were executed perfectly.
We went to Frilu as a family for a Mother’s Day lunch. I was intrigued by the review in Toronto Life and as foodies, we wanted to experience what one of Canada’s up and coming chefs with Noma experience would offer.
In a word: WOW! This was a full sense gastronomic experience where the food had to be savoured for taste, texture, appearance, creativeness of ingredients use, and suggested pairing both alcoholic and non-alcoholic (both are available). All were exquisite!
This lunch was comparable to the very best I’ve had anywhere in the world. Chef Troiano and his wife were consummate hosts and it was very exciting to see a restaurant like this in Canada.
The location is unconventional - a strip of shops on Yonge Street in a very unscenic part of Thornhill, but consider that this startup would rather focus on quality rather than pay crazy downtown Toronto rents.
Frilu is not inexpensive, this is not where you go to save money, but it IS where you go when you want a rare and amazing gastronomic adventure.
Such a wonderful fine dining experience. Tasting menu for the season was presented with amazing flavors, nice presentation, thoughtful creativity, wonderful setting in a friendly and elegant environment. The non-alcoholic pairing offers an option for a different dining experience from another perspective. My wife and I have had repeated meals at each season’s creative menu and it never failed to amaze us. Wonderful team led by chef John Vincent, Sandra, and Kelli. Thumbs up. Cheers.
The food and service were exceptional.
Inspiring spring menu, keep it up! Will definitely come back for the summer menu!
The food was innovative, surprising, super fresh, beautifully plated, and most importantly, tasted really really good. The wine pairing with each dish was superb – as good pairings should, the wine accentuated the food; amplifying the intensity of every bite. The restaurant is small, which allows the service staff to provide a really intimate, personalized dining experience. It feels like they’re there just for you. Dedicated to making sure you’re having a good time. I went in not knowing what to expect. I came out gobsmacked with amazement. Like, what just hit me? But in a really, REALLY good way. This is a resto I will recommend (check it out AT LEAST once!) and I will definitely revisit.
The tasting menu was interesting but not exceptional. The service was great and our servers were very knowledgeable about the different courses.
The spring menu was devine! Both the alcoholic and non alcohol pairings complimented the courses perfectly! I can’t wait to see what the summer menu is!
I only like 1 dish out from 10 dishes. They are mostly bland taste and definitely not worth $.
Beautifully designed and presented tasting courses, all of really high quality. Superb tastes and textures. Willing but inexperienced servers got the pace right but lacked finesse to match the meal
very creative menu, delicious food, wonderful service
Really enjoyed the pacing of the dishes which gives ample time for conversation. Service was top-notch and never rushed.
Had a great dinner.
I have already recommended this to all my family and friends. I would highly recommend this to all gourmet foodies as well.
We came here for our anniversary. We got the tasting menu with wine pairings. Half was wine and half was sake.
The food was simply incredible with beautiful plating. The ambiance was classy and mature, great for conversation. The service was the absolute best part. I am so impressed by the team working there. Such sweet people who are truly looking to provide a great experience. We chatted with each of our wait staff and felt like they were old friends.
I plan on going here many many more times before they get more popular and I can't make reservations anymore. Incredible price as well. I am sure they can charge much much more for the fabulous experience.
Please note, the menu changes twice a season, so this is a great place to go to repeatedly.
A great restaurant with great service. Will be back soon.
My wife and I dine out frequently and have been to every top restaurant in Toronto and to many of the world’s top 50. We feel qualified to say that Frilu is the best high end restaurant value! The food is creative and exceptional...the non-alcoholic tasting menu is wonderful....people are passionate and professional and we love every time we are Frilu. Three things to remember when you walk into Frilu...1. The professionals are in charge (this is a set menu and you have no say). 2. The pace will be determined by how you choose to eat your food but plan on a 2-2.5 hour experience. 3. The price is set ($95++) so the bill should never a surprise and as such you can enjoy the evening.
We think Frilu is a top 5 Toronto food experience but the best value!!!
Frilu was a fantastic experience - great fusion of Japanese and Italian with surprisingly complex and unusual flavour combinations. We loved it and hope to return soon! Small restaurant so book early
Such an amazing experience! It’s my third time around to try their seasonal menu that changes every few weeks and it never fails to impress me with the level of perfection and love you can see and taste crafted for every single dish. Absolutely amazing, friendly staff, perfect tasting dishes. Can’t wait for the next season!!!
Small, intimate restaurant. Food was amazing. Presentation and service impeccable. Would definitely visit again.
Finally decided to try Frilu out and it didn't disappoint! The interior was warm and stylishly-simple. I was greeted and led to the bar table, where I could chat with Kelli the general manager and learn more about the dishes and paired wines and sakes. As expected for any tasting menu, portion of each dish was not huge but all tasted great. I loved the Winter Turnip as the chicken puree was rich and hot (perfect for warming up in a winter evening). Another dish that surprised me was the black cod. The fish was done just right, moist inside, without too much seasoning which could have hidden the true taste of the fish. And the dessert of the night was a fried hazelnut tofu and sweet yam icecream, both sounded unusual but tasted really good. And I actually had an urge to call and tell my friend about this place while enjoying the meal!
Exceptional food pairings great service and attention to detail.
More than amazing food that has been meticulously prepared with extreme care and skill, Frilu is a destination that has the most charismatic owners and staff you could ever ask for in a restaurant. If you choose the alcohol pairing, you will notice the restaurant has a beautifully balanced "Yin and Yang" where the dishes prepared are wonderfully matched to various wines, ciders, and sake for the best enjoyment of your culinary journey. After 4 attendances, it's becoming clear that Frilu will stay as one of my absolute favourite restaurants, perhaps for a lifetime if I have any say into the continued success of such a great establishment.
Best restaurant north of St Clair
Great food and presentation. Lovely spot to bring a date or show off to a friend. Price is reasonable compared to similar establishments in Toronto.
Our waiter was very forgetful of when we asked for lemon and water. It’s not a busy place and that’s the only order we placed as it’s a set menu. We didn’t need to ask several times until it was brought. The portions were extremely small. Each meal fit on about a teaspoon- I’ve been to restaurants like this before and the pre-set meals are very substantial you do not go home wanting to make yourself a snack but here the entire party was still hungry afterwards. We were not a fan of the dishes, they were mediocre. Edible but not outstanding. The waiter would bring each dish to our table and would whisper what they were. I understand it’s a quiet restaurant but it’s an issue when the diners cannot even hear what the waiter is saying. I would not recommend, save your money.
