Overall, great! Service was a bit slow though. The table next to us that arrived later than we did, had their drinks and food before we got to order our drinks.
Absolutely amazing but really slow service

Very nice that the wait staff made my friend feel so special. I was disappointed in the selection of entrées. Hasn’t changed since the summer. The dessert was exquisite.
We tried multiple items. Two sea food mains were delicious and so was the french onion soup the best I've had so far.

1 hr for mains to come, however tables arounds us who came later got their meals minutes after ours. Was able to make a last minute reservation, evident why that was.
Actually, we were hoping to go for dinner but there were very few options for fish (not seafood) or vegetarian so we booked for brunch instead.
Disappointed that the fries and coffee were not hot and we needed to ask for this to be remedied.
Also disappointed that the desserts on dessert menu were not available. There was only one dessert offered. We were there for a sunday brunch and there was a full restaurant so unsure why they couldn't have more desserts available.
Overall, the food was good as was the service. Will likely return for another try but not for dinner unless the menu is more inclusive/varied.
Food was exceptional. They made an error on our order, but it was rectified quickly and the staff made an effort by apologizing and our dessert was free.
I was a bit disappointed that the initial table they were going to give us was in the entrance section which didn't have nearly the same ambiance as the rest of the restaurant. We sat at the bar and had a drink and they switched our table within about 40 min which suited us perfectly.
It wasn't error free, but overall they rectified everything and we had a very enjoyable meal!
The food at Gare de l'Est is always excellent. We had another superb meal before going next door to the Crow's Nest to hear some jazz. A great way to spend a Friday evening.
Great to have a decent french restaurant in Toronto that isn't over the top expensive
Great ambience and lovely staff. A few observations to explain my review. The Onion soup broth was sublime but I think not enough as the bread piece was way too big and overwhelmed the dish. The steak was good but I always wish a restaurant would ask you if you want it pre cut or not. Mine was brought precut which I don't like. The server was nice (and made a great wine recommendation) but there were a few stretches where she didnt check in and especially after she brought the bill, the wait was so long I hailed the manager down. It's a great ambience but everything counts in a solid dining experience.

Principal server was aloof and somewhat disinterested, support server was pleasant and attentive. Portion for price was not the greatest, but the food was tasty.

The food and service were fantastic.
Stopped for dinner before a concert in the neighbourhood. We called ahead to say we were running late and they were very accommodating. Steak Tartare (main), French Onion Soup and Salade Verte: all tasty, fresh and beautifully presented. Will gladly go again when we are in the east end.

Duck confit was terrible and literally inedible - not “confit’d” at all.

I was meeting 2 of my friends for brunch and I was immediately put through the
correct Covid protocols by the wait staff.
We had a great table near the window and the ambience is great.
We all ordered different dishes and they were all very good.
The wait staff was was right on point and attentive.
I would highly recommend this place for brunch and will be going back soon.
Amazing pain perdu! The Shakshuka was delicious and my partner loved the lobster in his omelette! Definitely recommend coming for a lovely Parisian brunch

The bourride was a little pricey for the amount of seafood, but it was cooked perfectly and beautifully seasoned. Great efficient service.
Superb evening. I had Bourride de Morue (Cod Stew) which sounds best in French. Started with French Onion Soup which is right at the top of my FOS experiences, and I have had a lot of bowls over the years. Galette and latte to finish, excellent. Service, the best.

Very innovative with their menu. Delicious all around.
Food was ok. Duck was cooked perfectly, presentation was sloppy. We were served stale bread with our steak tartare which was quickly replaced with fresher bread ( softer ) but not crostini. Tartare was over powered with mustard. Server was very polite, but he appeared to be too busy and didn’t give the table the extra few minutes to make us feel easy. It was very hard to ask him questions as he always seemed to run away from the table.. yes we were hungry and ate fast but the service felt very rushed. I am a server and I understand that times are different and places are understaffed, however it’s never nice for the guest coming in for a nice relaxing night to have a sever that seems stressed the whole

This place either needs to drastically improve their food or lower their prices, as the current quality does not justify the cost. My steak, ordered medium rare, was served medium well, almost well done. The pate a choux dessert was so tough it was clearly at least a day old, I was frankly shocked they had the nerve to serve us day old pastries for $13 a piece. Maybe they thought we wouldn’t notice?
I know it’s a fancy place, I don’t begrudge them the $10 pints of lager or the $7 bottles of San Pel, our tab came to $400 and I paid without complaint. But I was stunned to see that, after being served a single piece of bread with the chicken liver mousse ($16, the liver was tasty), I was then charged another $2 for a second piece of bread! I don’t expect this kind of nickel and diming from an ostensibly high class place.
The service left something to be desired as well. The server was very nice and polite but I frequently felt forgotten. By the time our server got to us at times I’d been trying to catch her eye sometimes for 10 minutes or longer. I don’t need to be checked in on constantly but our server glancing over at our table during her rounds to see if we’re craning our necks looking for her would have been appreciated. I asked for my wine to be served with my steak, I was half finished with the steak when the wine arrived. I expect more for $100/head before tip.
Cocktails were good, I recommend the egg whites one. I will not be returning to this restaurant, however, unless I hear that their quality has increased drastically.

This was out first time at Gare de l'Est and we hope to return. We ate inside the restaurant in a nicely spaced area. The service was great, people friendly, and the food was wonderful. I hope restaurants keep forever the wide spacing of tables necessary for COVID protection. We were not claustrophobic plus we could hear ourselves speak unlike prior to COVID.
Service was great by Kirstin. Great drinks, fun appetizers. The key Issue was that after 50 minutes we inquired about our main course and found out it had been forgotten. We asked for the cheque and left so we could eat elsewhere.
Brunch was not that great;
Omelette could have used a little more salt. Other items like Croque Monsieur didn't feel as balanced.
Mimosa was not bad.
From a qualified individual who appreciates the subtle, multifaceted differences. I work in Film, travel frequently -) with finely-tuned steak, salmon and Matisse-painted salad. The presentation was simply exquisite (living sculptures). Portions were generous- more than fair. Service was individualized, highly attentive -exceptional. Ambience is uniquely respectful of clientele for discourse, yet befitting the adventurous while a jazz band sets-up. Never know who arrives? We love the adventure. Wished we would've had time to remain. um.. In short: discerning yet accessible to anyone in need of a unique hidden gem of an oasis. My gratitude to Dee, our Server, Master Chef, Ms. & Mr. Anderson for the recommendation. I am certain that I have found a new home in Toronto for my professional and personal dining. Yes- (Dare I mention) even on-par to J***'s in Yorkville now!!! I cannot thank you all enough. My gratitude.
Nice menu in a very nice atmosphere. Desserts aren't worth trying though. Service was friendly but not efficient
