An authentic, modern French brasserie in the heart of Toronto’s vibrant east end, Gare de l’Est was named after one of the oldest and largest train terminals in Paris, France.     This restaurant is just fine. The menu looks really nice but the food itself was below expectation especially for that price for breakfast. It was definitely just fine but mediocre for the cost.

    Having eaten here before and enjoyed it immensely, we were very disappointed in the Toronto Tasting Menu offered in partnership with Crow’s Theatre. In comparison to the regular menu, the food was very disappointing. Dishes did not make sense compositionally, fried dishes weren’t hot, and overall flavours weren’t very strong. As Crow’s subscribers, we have a discount with the restaurant that we were told was not applicable to the tasting menu despite receiving specific emails to the contrary. We were able to get the discount after escalating to the manager. Great drinks and service was good until the bill. Would stick to the regular menu next time.

    Prompt, efficient service. Nice options on the prix fixe menu. Duck breast was outstanding, the lamb was somewhat tough/overdone and probably not that a good cut to begin with. Good vibe in the restaurant, interesting cocktails from the bar and a good wine list. Would go there again.

    Thank you to all the staff (front of house, bartender, kitchen, chefs), especially our great server, for delicious food, great ambience, and the curated menu inspired by The Master Plan (at Crows Theatre) which we saw after the wonderful time at your restaurant.     Great food, service, portion size, etc. We will be coming back! We did go on a holiday and it was not very busy, so cannot judge what the noise level would be at a busy time.

    Beautiful restaurant with excellent service and menu selection. Our waiter, Will, was very attentive and gave us some suggestions on the menu and wine pairing. It is a little dark once the sun goes down but other than that I’d highly recommend it.

    Be careful ordering wine by the bottle here. I ordered a bottle of the Syrah. The server brought a full decanter of wine to the table without showing me the bottle, nor letting me taste it. I explained the wine etiquette - that I needed to see the bottle and to taste it. She genuinely didn’t seem to understand so I decided just to trust her and I accepted the decanter. It was definitely not the Syrah. It may have been the Grenache blend but it had been open for several days. It was dead. I should have made a stink but didn’t want to ruin my, nor my partner’s, evening. Also, I ordered the steak frites. My steak had a lot of gristle. I had trouble cutting it and I had to spit out several pieces that I couldn’t even chew. Not so pleasant. The fries were very good though. The peppercorn sauce was also delicious. Without the sauce, the steak would have been just awful. For the price of the plate ($45) the sauce should be included ($4). This restaurant must be losing money to be so cheap!

    Wonderful service from all staff from the first welcome by the host. Our server was excellent - knowledgeable, patient and pleasant. My father has a walker and they were accommodating and kind about his mobility issues. Family-friendly menu. Nice to see more restaurants are providing a variety of non-alcoholic options for those who don’t drink. Noise level was comfortable for my parents especially who are both hard of hearing. A great spot for a nice family occasion!

    The plating of the food is beautiful, but for the price point- we would have expected it to be executed better, and taste better. We have been disappointed a few times coming here- we are always expecting a really really lovely meal- and end up dropping a fair amount of money on it, but it should be better. The lamb was cold , carrots too raw to put a fork in (like actually went flying when we tried to pick them up). Two guests had the same fish dish and the serving sizes were wildly different.

    Greatly exceeded expectations, not too loud unlike many restaurants now, music kept quiet which maintains a reasonable level in the place. Absolutely excellent food and wait staff. Will return.

    While all three courses on the Summerlicious menu were superb, I would go back for the lemon tart alone. A lovely, relaxed evening of wonderful food and wine in a beautiful space.

    Impeccable, genial, professional service from our server, Jacob, to the 15 year old aspiring server; really great food with brilliant saucing. Wine suggestions were spot on. We lucked into a sommelier’s mistake and we’re served a glass of 2010 superior champagne for a dollar more than our original Crémant choice. Half price oysters on Mondays. We shall return.

    Summerlicious was spectacular ! First time at Gare de l’Est and everything was superb - the summerlicious menu had some great options and our server was thoughtful and authentic. I’m definitely coming back for their regular menu
