Ever wonder what it would look like if San Francisco and New Orleans had a baby? Enter Gentilly, opened in November 2019 by San Francisco Excelsior residents Alexis Hyatt and Sarah Duncan, whose shared love of New Orleans food, drinks, and culture inspired them to create a French Quarter-themed bar and restaurant that pays tribute to the flavors, aesthetic, and spirit of New Orleans, and bring a little bit of Bourbon St to Mission St. with Cajun comfort food and cocktails that’ll leave you feeling good from head to toe. A truly unique spot in the Excelsior, with a beautifully decorated front lounge and back dining room, a classy front parklet, and a a ramshackle glam patio featuring a mural done by local artists in the Mission district.

Whether you’re in the mood for a Po’ Boy, Gumbo, our signature Maple Bacon Glazed Fried Chicken, or any of the lovingly cooked comfort food dishes on our menu, we bring the heat. Don’t forget to save room for beignets…

This place is a gem. A unique, casual atmosphere with outstanding Cajun food. Bam Bam shrimp appetizer just whet our appetite for the amazing gumbo and cajun green beans. You must order the sourdough garlic bread, too-- you're gonna need it to wipe your gumbo bowl clean.

Service was impeccable. Very attentive and accommodating but absolutely not overbearing. We enjoyed our conversation with our server/hostess/owner(?) as much as we enjoyed the meal. And I am embarrassingly remiss for not getting her name.

We absolutely will be back!

A neighborhood favorite. My wife and I snuck in a mid-week "date". Always a treat!

Great food. Fun atmosphere at the bar, but dining room is in the back and not as festive. Food was very slow to arrive.

If you like fried food that has been handled perfectly, Gentilly is the place for you. I could have the onion rings for dessert any day of the week. The chef has a good touch for spices, so that items have a bite but the flavors are complex and the heat isn't overwhelming. I'd also praise the bar for a good array of complex and tasty cocktails. A meal at Gentilly is the perfect date night for us.

Took my daughter here for her Birthday for Brunch on a Saturday. We liked the amtosphere. Loved he music. Arrived shortly after opening; hostess greeted she loved it. I had the Pulled Pork Hash; it was very good; could have used some type of side condiment other than Ketchup. The Lemon Pound Cake was so good; the Lavendar Ice Cream that came with it had my mouth singing with all the flavors. Had a Lemon Sage Hot Toddy .... so good; wish I could have taken one home to snuggle in bed and watch TV. Will be going back again!

Really great food at a reasonable price. Cute indoor dining with outside dining available as well.

The food was great especially the spicy chicken sandwich. The pulled pork was amazing as well. The beer biscuits was good, but not great. I would visit this restaurant again for the spicy chicken!

Their specialty drink, the Marie Lavieu, is simply one of the best cocktails around. Hands down.

Happy hour drinks and snacks were the perfect start: the Marie Laveau cocktail was delicious! We sat at the bar and the bartender super friendly and great with recommendations. Food was really good, especially the gumbo: fantastic! My friend said her shrimp po’boy was really good. Will definitely come back.
