Grand Cru Wine Bar & Bistro
The menu at Grand Cru consists of an impressive array of tapas items, world class entrees, fondue and hand crafted desserts. the idea is equisite food paired great wines at a price you can afford. But if you are in the mood to eat at home, stop by and pick up a bottle of wine to go.
Food was amazing every dish we had was an experience. We will male this a once a week stop.
This restaurant was great. Food wonderful and the staff were all very accommodating. I’ll be back!!
Had a cheese platter and really enjoyed the interesting selection of cheeses. Also had the Lamb and Pappardelle pasta and it was amazing! Would definitely recommend.
This was a surprisingly excellent restaurant. The food and service were superb.
We had a quiet corner table. The service was friendly and attentive but not intrusive. A very memorable date night.
The Valentine's Day Prix Fixe was excellent. The Scallop starter, Chateaubriand for one, and the Prosciutto Wrapped Pork Tenderloin were outstanding. Additionally, the Build Your Own Wine Flight allowed us to pair wines with each of our meal selections. Finally, the Chocolate Fondue for two was a great finish to a wonderful meal!!
I don't know how the food was. We left after 45 minutes waiting for the waitress to take our order
We were a party of 6 on a Saturday night and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We had the Artisan Cheese Platter and Charcuterie Platter. Both very good. Most at our table had the salmon which was delicious. Would highly recommend coming to this restaurant.
Wonderful place to really chat over good food and wine. Service was prompt and friendly, and the variety of menu options perfect for a group with varied diets . We all had as wonderful time visiting over shared fondu and choosing meals to suit us all.
This is one of our favorite restaurants. The food is uniformly excellent. I had the beet salad and rockfish, hubby had lobster thermidor and mushroom orzo, friends had salmon and divers scallops. All so good.
The management needs to deal with large tables of loud customers, exceptionally loud, far beyond acceptable
Good food and nice location
My husband and I had our first date at Grand Cru and we regularly go back to enjoy the great food, wine and service, while reminiscing about our romance. Grand Cru will always have a special place in our lives.
Nice quiet place with good drinks and decent food. I went with my roommate and seemed to be the only non-couple there. Good date spot
This is one of our favorite places in Ballston. The service is attentive and considerate. It is nice to pick your wine off of the shelf. The wine prices are reasonable and their license allows you to take wine if you don't finish the bottle. I really enjoy the Filet here.
Great dinner! Awesome wine selection!
New Year's Eve dinner with wine pairing was grand. Good choice of entrees, we had bouillabaisse and rockfish. First course of butternut squash soup and stuffed oysters was delicious. And the assorted dessert plate continues to be the best thing here next to the entrees. Wine pairing was also a hit.
We have eaten here a few times & loved it! I was so looking forward to eating there for New Years eve, however was disappointed with the limited menu options. There was truly nothing on the main entree I was even interested in. I ended up with the soup, butternut squash which was delicious. The area we sat in was quite dark. Service was so so, started out ok, but my soup came way before the rest of my party had there meals. I will go back but not when they only offer the limited menu. When we were ready to order desert the wait was quite long.
The New Years Eve menu with its wine pairing was wonderful. The two starters and three entrees were exquisitely presented and absolutely delicious. The Grand Cru dessert sampler was scrumptious, an epicurean delight!!
Solid, but noise level is distracting. Service good, but could be better.
Great experience with quick service, preparation, and great food. Nice and very affordable wine selection. Would come back again
Fantastic dinner and wine! Service was impeccable! We’ll be back! Thank you for a wonderful evening.
Have dined her many times because you pick out your own wine from the shelves. They can provide guidance/advice/recommendations if you want it. The food is good and the specials are particularly interesting.
The staff are very helpful, courteous and you don't feel rushed. The bar area has seating both at the bar and high top tables. They also have a more private section for private parties but if the room is not engaged you may sit in that area as well.
Recommend reservation, particularly during the holiday season.
First time visitor and I was impressed. Was there for lunch and had the executive lunch special. Service was excellent and attentive. The onion soup was tasty and the chicken/mushroom crepe was a much larger portion than I had expected, which was nice because often crepes are very dainty affairs. I didn't order wine but hope to go back soon to sample their other fare. Quite a warm, welcoming place.
We had an amazing, delicious, quality dinner - the portion of my steak and frites was absolutely huge and my SO really enjoyed the mushroom orzo. We had the lamb meatballs and ahi tuna for appetizers and we thought they had amazing touches. The best part was our waitress - Jocelyn I believe her name was. She was a delight and answered our questions thoughtfully.
I liked the idea of picking a wine bottle by browsing. The wine collection was outstanding.
The duck, salmon, and steak frites were fab, not to mention the great service and allowing our table of 6 to have a small birthday celebration for an 11 year old! We love having great wine choices at reasonable prices and the wonderful cocktail suggestions and service by Melvin behind the bar! Kudos to all!
We had a great time with an amazing menu, wine selection, and ambience. Also, the staff was very accommodating to a small child, which we very much appreciated!
Great service, great food and great selection of wine
My husband and I ate at Grand Cru for the first time. We’ll definitely return. The food was outstanding. French onion soup, charcuterie plate, Brussels sprouts salad and crab cakes were on our menu. I had the crab cakes, which had great chunks of crab meat with little filler. We enjoyed our server and found the atmosphere pleasant. My only concern was the high noise level, but that’s pretty common in all eateries these days.
Great food and great service.
The French Onion soup was excellent. However, the risotto and lobster appetizer was not even warm when it was served, requiring it to be returned and redone, thus delaying arrival of our appetizer. The coffee granita with doughnuts was a fabulous dessert.
The bar was filthy. When sitting there we had to look at boxes and other items suited for storage. The bartenders wiped out wine glasses with a dirty rag, they never refreshed the rag. We ordered appetizers the lamb meatballs were excellent. The clams smelled horrible and tasted like they were cooked in old grease. I ordered a bourbon that I know well and I would bet dollars to donuts that what I was served is not what I ordered even though it was in the bottle that I requested. My companion ordered one of the wine flights and only one of the three was drinkable. They have no wine system to keep the wine refreshed. If they have any business at all it’s because of their location.
I was alarmed at your review, so took a look at the camera, which told a somewhat different story. The drink was made directly in front of you with the correct liquor. The bar is cleaned very very very thoroughly each night. Rags are switched for every shift. The system no longer allows happy hour inputs after 6:40. We go through 3 to 4 bottles of each of our wines daily. They are always fresh. Our location is hidden. The reason we are voted the top wine bar is not due to location.
Great food, attentive, kind and friendly service... what more could one want? The steak frites underscores why it is a perennial classic, and the Grand Cru hamburger is emphatically satisfying. After a few dinners there, and after a delightful lunch, Grand Cru could become a de fault destination.
We like Grand Cru: the food is very tasty and the location is very convenient both to the Metro and our house. The service is good but this visit proved once again, that if you arrive after 8:45 PM, even though hours are listed to 9:30-10, one feels rushed with the service/servers, hoping you don't want dessert or another glass of wine.
Grand Cru would be is a great restaurant in theory but fails to deliver in reality. Ambiance is good, menu looks appealing but food is not well prepared, poor proportions and lacks flavor commiserate with price. I paid $31 for a steak that lacked flavor, small portion and tough. Appetizers were over priced, lacked character, detracted from ambiance and did not taste very good. Service was horrible. The waiter yelled at me, referred to my wife as my Hag and ignored us on our date night... all because I expected drinks to be refilled, the staff to accept follow-on drink orders and meals to be delivered on time. Until management evaluates the purpose of the establishment, the staff will experience roll conflict. Is this a mid to high end fine dinning establishment or a posh wine bar.... they can't be both. Service was really bad. I don't expect much but please don't disrespect my wife and neglect basic service requirements.
Hi Douglas, sorry about your experience. Do you know whom your server was? Grand Cru has for many years and continues to be voted the top romantic restaurant in the area as well as wine bar and is ranked as second in French Restaurants. This is due to our meat being all prime and our normally excellent service. But I did notice that you were there on the night that the computer system failed and although it is no excuse, everyone was likely a bit more frazzled than normal.
Grand Cru has an excellent wine selection. The staff members are very helpful in identifying and selecting a wine.
It was good.
All four of us were delighted with our meals, but the traditional French bistro classic, steak frites, and the US classic hamburger were each quite spectacular. The dessert menu is almost overwhelming - were I dining alone I'd over one of each - but the desserts that we decided up were fantastic (unnecessary, but fantastic). Grand Cru turned out to be precisely the right spot to have dinner and catch up with dear friends.
