Guu Original Thurlow
Guu Original on Thurlow is where the Izakaya boom started. It’s not only the first Guu to open, but is the very first Izakaya in Vancouver.
Established in 1993 as “Raku” & changed to “Guu” in 2000, this Guu offers the most authentic Izakaya experience, offering classic dishes like Yaki Udon & Oden. This is as close you’ll get to the real deal….unless you fly to Japan.
We keep seats for walk-in customers as well. No available seats on OpenTable do not mean we are fully booked. Please be aware that the time-limited per table is two hours during peak hours.

It’s a authentic japanese restaurant. Like eating in Japan.
Thank you for making my Wife's birthday extremely memorable.
Traveled from Toronto and had to make sure I celebrated my 30th birthday at the original Guu! The staff were friendly and the food was delicious, as always. Arigatou gozaimasu!
The food was great. Classic izakaya dishes. The flavours were really good and the prices are excellent. Especially for the box sets
Great food! Portions are big and not expensive. Feels like you’re transported to Tokyo
We stop here every time we’re in Vancouver. Everything was delicious. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. The staff here are friendly and very attentive.
Plenty of unique dishes, fairly priced and tasty cocktails. Our reservation got us a large table amid a bustling atmosphere and would advise others to do the same.
The udon were tasty, creamy and perfectly match with all the other ingredients! The service was perfect.
Came from toronto where the former Guu's Izakaya (now kinkas) was one of my favourites. This place was even better and i was excited my expectations were surpassed!
Delicious food and friendly service, we ordered 6 different dishes and loved them all.
ALWAYS enjoy my food here and ALWAYS get great service and ALWAYS have a great time!
Five of us including kids went there for Sunday lunch. The service and food were very good. I think it was a great spot for a weekend lunch.
One of the best casual Japanese restaurants in Vancouver. Great food diversity and quality
Tables were not fully seated, which was great. As we’re in Covid-19 situation, we didn’t want to eat in a crowed restaurant. We got a table near the wall, but walls were dirty! I saw some spider webs here and there and dusty…
Foods took a little longer than usual but they were all tasty.
Nice place to hang out with nice Japanese food on Friday night!
Small but very nice restaurant . Good food and good service
Really liked the place, it has style and it has character. The food was perfect, the service was extremely friendly. I love the setup with an open kitchen, when you can see how it's all prepared, I thought it was fascinating. It seems like the team is really enjoying what they are doing, and they are doing it so well. They create a very nice atmosphere which makes me wanna come back again and again. Actually, while we were having lunch we saw quite a few regulars showing up, all of which were enthusiastically greeted by the team, and that created a nice family feel about the place.
I will definitely come back, if not for the ambiance, then for that Yaki Udon, it was just too Guuuuud :)
Great service, great food, great ambiance!
highly recommend :)
Don't think about it. Just go. Your gonna enjoy yourself
Always the best . My favorite one
Love this place! Super authentic and great food. I especially love the takoyaki!
I make reservation online at 1pm. I can get table on time. Food come so fast. Excellent service.
Tasty food and nice stuff
I have nothing in particular to offer but the inside of the restaurant was hot.
Nice izakaya next to Robson, food is good, employees are passionate.
Food is good but bit expensive for the quality and portion.
Way too noisy.
Service is better than average of Asian restaurant.
Great food and good atmosphere
Awesome! Great food and service :-) I would definitely recommend it.
Outdoor dining is basically just the side walk but that was no problem, food was amazing, great value. Will come again.
Used to be my favorite lunch location while I was working in downtown.
Now during lock down they put up 4 tables on the entrance, which is not a very nice location sitting outside: Lot of high speed traffic on that part of Thurlow Street while no "people watching".
The food is great and same as the service. It's the best Guu when come to taste and menu selection.
Unfortunately no drinking is allowed on the patio.
Food is excellent, and shockingly low prices for what you get.
Excited to come back again!
The food here is amazing! Service is friendly. Value is great! They’re doing their best to adapt to the outdoor only COVID regulations but it’s not a real patio - they’ve just put some tables out in the front of their restaurant 🙂 kudos to them for trying!
Definitely a place to go. We were able to eat outside due to covid. Same food same quality. Highly recommended
great food great prices ,and always exelent service
outdoor dining option was moderate but it was as bit of a let down that 2-3 things we wanted or order wasn’t available. Had staple Japanese foods instead like karage, ebi Mayo, etc but those were SOOOOo good! Service was also so great and staff was really kind.
Food was extremely fresh and delicious, the service was superb and the restaurant exhibited very safe covid practices. Their sashimi appetizer was especially creative and delicious. Can’t wait to come back for more!
the food quality was excellent. service was good too. just that the floor was a bit sticky.
Lunch sets, chicken karaage, and takoyaki are our go-to's.
