Guu Otokomae - Gastown Ratings and Reviews
The food had very traditional asian qualities, not my particular taste preference, but well done overall! The service was great, and they were very accommodating. Love the restaurant layout and decor. Overall, I enjoyed the experience but felt some of the food options had too much flavour (overwhelmingly so) and would've preferred something more pared down that lets the food speak for itself (as opposed to combining a ton of different flavours).
Your location needs more staff in service and kitchen too, especially for lunch time! Please review your staffing issues immediately! Thank you :)
Great food & service. Convenient location!
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Guu. Very friendly and helpful staff to make the dining a great experience. Food is excellent, with great variety of dishes, complemented with local craft beers that they rotate every few days. Noise level is high, but a fun ambience. We like the freshness and simplicity of their dishes, yet each is made a little differently to make for interesting dining.
Made reservation and put you in front of the stair that you can fall back down the stair.
They run out too many things that was on their menu.
Next table was complaint slow service many time.
The host staff was wonderfully friendly but the service ended there. While each wait person touch point was very friendly, it was infrequent and it took several wait persons to manage our table of two. It was very busy, so I understand what was going on, but they seemed barely able to keep it together.
I also had in my mind that I'd see more sushi and sashimi options - in addition to the izakaya concept. There were a lot of options unfamiliar to me, like Tasty Cheese Tofu and Negitoro Garlic which seemed interesting in the description but were surprisingly flavorless. The textures were unsettling. I was hungry and didn't want to send them back and have to wait and wait, so we ate everything anyway. I did order some salmon and yellow fin sashimi. The salmon was very good. My daughter liked the gyoza - the shrimp + pork mix and flavors were very nice. The very best thing that I ordered was the Kazaemon Yuzu Gifu (under Plum/Fruit Sake) on the drinks menu. I should have skipped the food and spent all my money on a bottle of it. We spent around $80+ for two people (one adult, one child), excluding tip. I wish I would have spent it elsewhere.
The entry was funky and crusty (didn't mind) and atmosphere was cheerful. I liked our view above Gastown's main corner. The tables turned very slowly - because the food came very slowly. Again, it was Christmas, so perhaps we came on a bad day. Funny that they have a "2 hour" dining limit rule. If they turned their tables faster, they'd be able to take on twice the reservations ($$$).
I see that this is a popular restaurant/chain and but am confused as to why that is. Perhaps I just ordered the wrong stuff. Or perhaps it's all about branding. Or my palate is geared to more complex flavors with better service.
I'd proceed with caution here. Spend your dollars wisely. Maybe try out lunch or go for drinks and appetizers before the dinner rush. For heaven's sake, don't go on a holiday or during peak tourist season.
Great food and service once we were seated. I really like the ebi mayo! Make sure you book a reservation for dinner with the correct number of people! The host was reluctant to seat one more person for us despite plenty of room but finally did when I suggested we leave to find another restaurant nearby (whew) but made sure we knew we had to leave for the next reservation in 2 hours...
This was my third visits, I think I and my coworkers probably won't go here again.
The table for 8 I booked through the online was too small. The table was actually the table for 6, not 8. I don't understand why they reserved the small table for 8 guys, even there were plenty of the emptied tables.
For the foods, chicken curry was good, pork cutlet was not bad, but the teriyaki was terrible.
Mushroom cheese bimbimbab is one of my favorite dishes
well average food, price is ok and service is good.
I did not find this location as good as other Guu restaurants. Food was ok, service was sparse but friendly when we had it. I personally also hoped for a bigger cocktail suggestion. For some reason our table of 9 was only allowed 2 menus... not sure why.
The place was beautiful. The atmosphere is definitely above average. I enjoyed my dinner with a full satisfaction.
I had booked a reservation for a business meeting and had asked in the notes for a table in a quieter area in the restaurant and indicated it was a business meeting. No one called me to let me know there was no quiet area. I showed up for my reservation and there was loud music playing, definitely not appropriate for a business meeting. I mentioned to the greeter that I had specifically requested for a quiet table as this was for a business meeting and she said I'm sorry we don't have a quiet area. So we had to leave and go find another place to eat. I wish they would have read the notes in my reservation and called me to notify me of that. The food there is good, I've been there before, but I would not recommend it for a business meeting.
Guu was amazing. The Izakaya menu was tasty and we'll priced. The drink selection was great.
Food was okay, but not great. It was better before. Chefs changed?
Amazing food. The grilled squid and beef tataki we’re AMAZING.
Guu is good!
Always a fun time and great for trying flavor combinations you've never had before.
I have been to Guu many times before and at various locations. This time was not the greatest and I don't know if I'll be a returning customer. My partner and I wanted to order a few dishes and to our surprise both dishes we chose were sold out. This was at 9:30 pm! I would think at maybe 11:00 they would sell out as it's the end of the night but that early!? I then wanted to order another drink and our server was no where to be seen. I think that Guu (Gastown) is awesome but today was a bit of a let down.
First time back after many years. The dishes were still imaginative asian small plates, but the execution wasn't as good, so it was a so-so meal. Service was also rather slow.
We were very excited to try Guu for the first time and we had arrived on time to our reservation. We overheard a few other parties ahead of us who didn't have reservations get seated before us. They asked us to wait and we ended up waiting 30 min past our reservation time and the waiter offered to give us a free dessert for our troubles. We ended up being very full after eating most of our food we ordered and asked instead of getting the free dessert if they could take off one of our appetizers instead. The waiter came back after asking his manager and said no, even though one of our apps was just $4. He finally agreed to take that off. It would have been a nice experience if we didn't have to wait and have that kind of bad service. It's not even about the price of whatever you give us for free, it's about the fact that your restaurant understands that they made an error in seating and made someone who had a reservation seated much later than their planned time and make up for it in any way so we would want to come back or refer friends to come. Disappointed in our experience at Guu.
Had a nice evening with my Fiancée.
Authentic cuisine, fresh and delicious food. In the mid of gastown you have many options for a drink after
Perhaps it was because it was a lunch menu but we had the bibimbap cheese in a stone bowl– there were no vegetables in it. The curry was standard fare and the cubed beef steak in a stone bowl wasn't very fresh. It was already emitting a smell that said that meat was beginning to go rancid. I came wanting to like this place but it was not the experience we were hoping for.
Japanese tapas . Good for sharing
I went there on Saturday night for my boyfriend Bday. I was very happy that they took in consideration my request for a window seat , it was the perfect spot. We had a very good time until a group got place behind us, they were loud , very disrespectful toward the waiter and claimed that they had made a 10 people reservations wich was arrange as a 4 top . All of that lead to an argument with the host and the server , moving table by themselves and after my boyfriend who was facing back to them got push a few times and had them leaning on the back of his chair , we decided it was time to go and have desert somewhere else. Good points are that the food is great , we enjoyed everything..
Anyways, it was great but I wouldn't go back for a special occasion , it's a good hang out casual place but when you want everything to be perfect , it's not a fit.
This place has one of the best service, the host/hostess kept our waters full and share small friendly chats with us. We ordered Beef Tenderloin Steak Bowl, Guuu'd Yaki Udon, Seared Beef Slices, Tuna Poké, Mussels, Flamed Mackerel, and three cocktails. I cant get enough of the mussels, the mussels were perfectly tender (wanted to drink the broth, too). Everything else tasted flavourful as well. Price-wise it is definitely suitable for working class, nonetheless, give it a try! (I can't stop thinking about the mussels..)
The noise and atmosphere is always great. We typically love the dishes as they are full of flavour and good value for money. This time, however, we arrived 30mins after opening to find that they had already run out of popular menu items. The service was so slow so we couldn't order quickly and then they asked us for last call. It felt like we were not getting fully served and then being rushed out. The cocktails were good, the waiter was very friendly when he could help us.
As soon as we were seated, my mother picked up her napkin and found a shard inside of glass on which she cut her hand. We let the server know and all they did was replace the napkin and briefly apologize. I feel like this situation was poorly handled as it was a serious concern and my mother could have gotten seriously injured if she hadn't found it.
We ordered the deep fried brie cheese which was extremely under cooked and cold. None of our many empty plates were cleared from our table, unless we requested.
It was my birthday, so my mother asked what they had for dessert and in a very tacky and rude manner the server let us know they do a birthday special followed by "BUT YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT" in a loud voice. Of course we would pay for it, were in a restaurant? After making it known it was my birthday, they couldnt even include a candle?
I have never had a bad experience here before which is a shame because this visit was for a special occasion. I feel the service was unacceptable especially for the amount of food and alcohol was ordered. Most likely will not be returning.
This is not like the Guu I remember. The food was much better before, especially the attention to detail which the Japanese are renowned for.
The chef's are usually Japanese and though we are in Canada, I would expect the chef to be Japanese and influence the menu and food quality. The tacoyaki and gyoza should be homemade and not store bought and frozen, there should be more traditional foods such as gomae, okura, and daikon.
After living in Japan, I have something to compare it to and although the service was great, the food was unfortunately Canadian:(
Try it, you'll love it. Great tapa style plates with awesome flavors. A touch on the pricey side but it's Gastown, so nothing new.
My friend was visiting from Toronto and was very excited go to Guu Gastown to celebrate her birthday. Unfortunately, we received truly disappointing service here.
Reservations were made for 730pm and we were seated right away, but after menus were distributed, we were not checked up on for at least 15 min. We had to flag down a server to get water first, and then drinks. After we had ordered drinks to celebrate the occasion, we had ordered food but from a different server than the one who had took our drinks. Our table was starving - and we waited patiently, thinking the kitchen was backed up from the restaurant from being busy. However, when I passed the kitchen on my way to the bathroom, there were no orders being made -- the chefs were on their phones.
When I went back to our table we checked the time and it was about 915pm. So we flagged down the "drink" server to ask him the status of our food - which he had no idea about. The girl who took our food order came quickly and just said that the food is coming out any time. And then she asked if there were any changes we wanted to make in our order...which we were confused about because why would we need changes if the orders were already put through and being made in the kitchen. And then we slowly realized she didn't input the orders at all. However, she didn't apologize or own up to that fact and just said that it would be out shortly. Two min later she brought out yaki-udon and takoyaki. This frustrated us the most because it took them 2 minutes to actually make the food after inputing the order. At this point we decided to cancel all the food and go someplace else. The girl server who messed up then mentioned that some of the food would be comp'ed, but we didn't care. Her unapologetic demeanor was completely infuriating and we left.
My friend's birthday night was saved when we went down the block to The Flying Pig and received prompt and exceptional service there. Guu Gastown should take note.
Always love Guu! Our go to place for a get-together with friends. Their food is really good and the vibe is fun and energetic.
bit sad that guu is no longer what it was. I've been a loyal fan for years, but this time we went most of the dishes were pretty lacklustre, and the servers completely disappeared for long stretches at a time. Our ordered sashimi never arrived, we asked the server and were told that it was really busy and that's why it was taking so long (had been at least 45 minutes at this point, restaurant was not full). waited for another long while, asked another server, was told again that it was really busy and that it was coming. waited another long while, at this point 1.5 hours after we had ordered. We asked to cancel it and just get the bill, and she said oh it's just come up! yeah no thanks. very disappointed, guess guu is over!
beware there is a two hour limit, you wont see the notice until after the reservation is confirmed, that's if you see it, and none of the staff will tell you either, until two hours later.
Nice place to go for a Japanese Izakaya style experience. It was busy, I recommend making a reservation if you have a group.
Good place for a quick bite or casual dinner with friends
Friendly servers but not enough of them to accommodate needs of customers.
Before we were seated, we were told that there's another group reserved for 8pm. This diminishes the loud, seemingly warm welcome we received. The table given to us by the window has a cold draft. The food is great overall. We left early & did not stay till 8pm.
Been coming here for 10 years for family get togethers. Food's gone totally downhill, they used to be extremely lively and warm when you came in, yelling their greeting, that was all gone.
Food portions got smaller, some came warm, some came cold (same dish). They've removed some of the winner's off the menu, prices higher. A steady decline.
Seems like upper management or the owners have blead the love out of this place. Broke my heart really. What a shame.
That was our last visit. Good luck.
