Guu Otokomae - Gastown
Each dish is carefully crafted to art-like perfection, making them both delicious & visually pleasing. Otokomae is perfect for groups, or for a sophisticated dinner for two at the counter.
We keep seats for walk-in customers as well. No available seats on opentable does not mean we are fully booked. Please be aware that the time limited per table is two hours during peak hours.
Initialy a very cool place. We ordered drinks and appetizers but then there was a mouse running on the floor, going from table to table so we walked out before drinking or eating anything.
If you have mice in a busy common area, it’s pretty much gaurenteed they are in the kitchen!!!
Pretty meh to be honest. Other guu are better. Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
Not the same atmosphere I expect from an izakaya. Quieter and more tame although some may prefer the quieter environment. We were late for our reservation so I appreciated that they were going to call to confirm before giving away our table - we got there just as they were going to call. Didn't have a daily specials menu so we couldn't order some dishes you would typically expect at an izakaya (Eg grilled cod, grilled makereral)
Excellent, prompt service with food to match! Everything was tasty, but definitely recommend the pork/shrimp dumplings and grilled squid (requested hot sauce with it). The burning pudding (flambé creme brûlée) was an entertaining finish and tasted great (we ordered a second one). We would definitely return here!
Went for a dinner around 5:30, was not super busy compare to the usual. The service was a bit slow, server did not speak English very well so had some trouble communicating. In the end, they charged us extra two dishes worth $20 that we did not order. I had already paid with visa and realized when I went over the receipt. I asked to get a refund and repay. However it took them about 20 minutes to get the manager and said they will just have to pay me back the cash difference. Very incovenient and dissapointing service so I dont think I will go back again.
We go to Guu every Christmas now! ... we have big family dinners on either side of Christmas day , so we started going to different Restaurants each year, but in recent years we are drawn back to Guu Gastown!
Horrible service. Food came late; dirty dishes not cleared; water glasses not filled. Good food.
Good place to meet up
Delicious food! We ordered a ton of food shared between four of us, and it was absolutely amazing.
very slow in service that day, waited 15 min to get a waitress to give us the bill. usually better.
Very good food, but the menu is half as big as Thurlow. Doesn’t have the same frenetic energy of the others. More chill.
Always liked this place. Would be nice if they had more vegetarian/vegan options.
Went there with my partner - both him and I got crazy stomachache after eating... I had to rush to the bathroom. Hope nobody else got that. There was a table right next to us full with drunk and loud people which killed the nice ambience, which is just too bad. But, food was really good and the service was good too. So 3 stars.
The food was fantastic!
It was good but the food wasn’t the way it always is.
Incredible shareable food and a fun, vibrant atmosphere. Amazing venue for going out for drinks with friends before a show.
Waited almost half an hour for someone to even come take our drink orders... we actually left and went somewhere else. Not my first time here, used to be a regular favourite. Sad to say we won’t be coming back. We’ve had better service when it was busy.
Food quality was not very good.. Ordered the "wagyu" beef tataki, salmon dashichazuke, and pork chashu. Beef tataki was very chewy and still half frozen, salmon was unbelievably small and their dashi was completely bland. Pork chashu was average. Service and ambiance were good, but food quality is nowhere near the quality you'd get at Guu on Thurlow.
It’s been awhile since we’ve been to the Guu in gastown. We made reservations but the table was not ready and the seating was not standard chairs so nowhere to hang your coats and bags. Food was tasty but tapas style so portions are small. You need to ask your server for help if you don’t want to leave hungry or disappointed. The beef tenderloin rice in stone bowl is good but stir it (egg) up and leave the rice to crisp before eating. Daily menu sheet changes so if you’re not adventurous, stick with the staples. Nothing was jumping out from the menu on this occasion; the menu listed in OpenTable is not reflective.
Foods are generally good and were served quickly, though I prefer having a salad first (everything incl. rice came together). The service was a bit slow and we had to raise hands long occasionally but overall it was a nice experience as usual.
One of my favorite restaurants that never disappoints.
The host mixed up with other reservation and we had to wait for 10 mins or so. But it was ok.
Staff are friendly and the food is very original and tasty!
Prefer the Thurlow or Robson Guu over this one nowadays. A convenient location, but the daily fresh sheet left something to be desired, and a number of dishes were not well executed. Stick to the basics like ebi mayo, stone bowls/udon, tuna tataki and wagyu carpaccio, being adventurous at this Guu did not pan out and we left a tad disappointed.
Was on a business lunch trying to max out a budget. The waiter halted us from ordering more and didn't record the right number of desserts. It was kind of condescending and made the situation very uncomfortable. I've never had a waiter stop us from ordering before. On top of this, the service was incredibly slow. We were seated at approx 12:06 and we waited until 12:50 to get the main dishes. This was a business lunch, time was not abundant and we left extremely displeased. Would not recommend or at least try to tell your waiters to have more tact.
It was our first time at this Guu location. We had an amazing open window seat. My boyfriend's parents and I came to celebrate my boyfriends belated birthday. Alm the dishes we ordered were tasty and the presentation was unique especially with the Saba & dessert custard. Staff was attentive and friendly. We found it odd that they shouted our order from the top floor to the bottom floor. Otherwise, our dining experience was splendid..
On vacation lots of fun and great food
Food was great.
Chicken curry lunch special was amazing, although curry itself was a bit salty.
Garlic negitoro is why I go there!
That’s soooooooo good
Always good and never disappointing at any Guu
Guu was amazing as always! It’s one of my husband’s favourite places. The staff is friendly and helpful giving recommendations on new dishes and drinks. If you haven’t been, you need to go!
The entrees were great but what really stole the show was the green tea ice cream
The food has gone downhill over the years. We ordered mussels and they were so bland and disgusting. Everything else was just ok and we ordered a large variety. Drinks are also somewhat overpriced.
Food was good and service was great! Staff was very friendly and helpful. Bathrooms were gross (dirty/stinky) not maintained.
Food was delicious, one of my favourite places.
I wanted to order the stone bowl ice cream but they didn't offer it the night of. It's something I really wanted. The food was good so that made up for it .
The food, service and ambience was great. Portions of menu items and pricing were fair.
The food and environment for lunch was not as good as my dinner experience 2 years ago. Not as many choices of drinks and creative food as I expected. Even though the venue was quite empty, and I booked at least a week ago, only a small and unstable table was reserved. I wont go next time.
