Food portion and quality was low at this location. Underwhelming service and lack of quality overall. Usually don’t have a problem with the other locations it’s just the Richmond one that is a hit or miss. I can understand if it was busy but the server seemed more annoyed and waiting for their shift to be done with rather then attending to our table. At the other locations the grill would have been changed 3 times before we had to ask but at this one we went though 2/3rd of our meat before a grill change. Fried bacon chips looked and tasted old and refried. Meat was brought to the table before tongs or plates and appetizers. We had to ask a couple of people before things were brought to the table. Overall not the best experience at this location.

I have been a long time gyu kaku customer and was happy to bring another family that haven’t tried it before. To our disappointment the meat quality wasn’t on par and we could hardly chew through some of the meat which hasn’t happened before. Even the gyu tan which is usually the softest and easiest to chew was also extremely hard to eat. I felt embarrassed for bringing my friends there when I had spoken so highly of the restaurant before going to it.

Meat portion was reduced, toro beef pieces I ordered was so thick, used to be very thin, now it’s simply a chunk of meat, takes away the flavour. Server forgot about my cheque, was helping others while my friend and I waited for him to print out ours. He didn’t even ask if we wanted on a separate bill, wasted time just waiting for him to correct the bill. Server name Daniel.

Food was amazing as always but service was horrible. Too many young kids working there that are careless. Had to ask multiple times for certain things, as well one of our dishes didn’t come. Told the waitress make sure it’s not on the bill, told me not to worry, yet it was still on the bill and realized after I paid. They had to refund me the amount in cash

Called three times, no answer: not enough staff to even pick up the phone. Arrived Sunday, January 22nd at 16:44 at the Richmond place. Front desk clerk, being 14 minutes early told me without smiling, or even a pretense at courtesy: "I'll see you at five" clearly looking at the door. That was said in a way that wasn't obviously rude, but clearly this isn't how you welcome guests. The kid doesn't know how to talk: he shouldn't be at the front desk. Set to a dirty table. We protested gently and were set to a clean table. Anjani arrived and offered truly remarkable service. If I had a restaurant I'd make her manager. Very conscientious, attending to everything, etc. Perfect. The food was fine, the sauce fine, but overall not a great value for 230$. The place needs a coat of paint, lower walls clearly dirty. Artwork on wall (the beef) of dubious artistic value and blue? A food place should have orange or red but not blue. Some research here was clearly skipped in favor of contracting who exactly? Our bbq didn't have the little golden rings the others had. The electrical cap on the breaker box under was removed, against code. For the party combo we bought the table requires military level space management and is hence clearly too small to do the job properly. There should be an assortment of sauces and an emphasis on them at the first visit since they are cheap and are what most will remember the place by. There wasn't. There is no overall branding that shines through since interior decoration is clearly not focused on anything ressembling consistency and branding. It looks as if it was an afterthought that never met a designer: it's not bad per se: its just absolutely forgettable. Value comes from the decor as well... The app and the discounts etc. all that is great.

Our server patiently explained his recommendations and other information for our meal, which was appreciated. He was great. The food is tasty, but it's probably hard to screw up marinated meats. And they were well marinated at that, everything was flavourful and tender. It's decent food at decent prices. We were there during normal hours, but the happy hour pricing wasn't a big difference if you go during those times.

The place didn’t look too busy but I have never been to one Gyukaku where our grill plate was only changed once (we are a family of 4 and ordered a set menu for 3 and a few more raw sides). The other gyukakus I have been to I won’t say the service was excellent but I felt like we were looked after. Last night I’d say we were rarely given attention (I don’t ever usually wave down my server) but last night I had to wave down somebody else coz no one ever came to us to change the grill plate and we sat there not grilling for over 15 min coz we were just waiting for someone to come. Overall, I wasn’t looking for superb service and I didn’t even get basic service I should get from a bbq restaurant.

The service was wonderful. Pierre was attentive, friendly and efficient. We ordered the combo for $42.50/person and it was more than enough for us to eat. We all thought that the the dinner was a very good value. We will be back!
