Hawthorn Dining Room and Bar
The grand lobby bar embraces guests, perfect for after work drinks and a night shared with friends. The dining room offers a modern vintage experience in a comfortable setting with a rotating menu and carefully crafted wine list.
Paying homage to the past, whilst looking forward to the future - the new space sets the stage for old stories to be told and new memories to be made
Incredible food, classic ambiance, a feel of riches and modern meet. The drinks are spot on and the food is something worth coming back for.
Beautiful space. Great food. Service was a bit leisurely for a lunch. Recommend.
To indicate that the Appetizer menu is designed for 'sharing plates' is misleading. We were 4 middle aged ladies that like to eat healthy. We were there to visit with each other, enjoy the cocktails (which were outstanding! Thank you for no ice cubes in my Manhattan, it was perfectly chilled and not watered down. Yum) and have some appetizer dishes one dish at a time over the course of a few hours. There seemed very few selections that were actually shareable. They were definitely suited for one person to eat. A cheese plate with bread and fruit and olives that the server would be able to recommend with confidence as satisfactory for 4 to share. Some dips or spreads that offered vegetarian, dairy or meat options served with vegetables and or crackers. A lobby based lounge, that allows guests to relax, eat and drink comfortably, as if they were in their own home should be the goal. The appetizers that we received were delicious and beautiful. The servers were very pleasant and attentive. The atmosphere was elegant and the furniture comfortable and attractive. I would recommend it to others. Modifying the appetizer options and not claiming that the (appetizer) menu is appropriate for 'family sharing' is my point in this review. Thank for reading!
The experience was not good. While the dinning room was just about empty our group of 12 was seated in very tight corner of the room were there was hardly any room to move. Theservice was poor and while the food was very good it took a very long time to get it and they forgot two of my guess order.
New Year day celebration!
A Disaster! My Wife and Mother-in-law went to the Hawthorn Dining room for New Years day brunch. We used to frequent the restaurant when it was the Rimrock Room a few years ago, and it was always excellent.
Ordered two Mimosas, which arrived quickly, and they were very good. My Wife and Mother-in-law ordered steak and eggs with the steak cooked well done. I ordered the Eggs Benedict.
My Eggs Benedict arrived quickly, and rather than have the food get cold, I finally started eating before the steak and egg meals arrived. I almost finished the Eggs Benedict, when the two steak and eggs finally arrived.
The steaks were barely warm, and one steak was medium instead of well-done. Our server (Julie) said that she could have the meals re-done, in about fifteen minutes, but I was finished my meal and the ladies decided to skip the steak, and move on to dessert. Both ladies ordered crème brulee, and we waited for twenty minutes with no Brulees appearing.
We decided to leave, and asked our waitress for the check. We all put on our jackets, I paid the bill, from which our server had deducted one steak and eggs. The crème brulees arrived, and our waitress said they would be complimentary. I thanked Julie, (our server) and I informed her that we were not interested in the two brulees, as we were leaving the restaurant, and the whole experience was an unbelievable mess.
I would suggest that the kitchen was totally understaffed on January 01st! A very disappointing experience!! My suggestion would be to spend your time and money elsewhere!!!
The Fairmont Palliser used to be considered the place to go to for a good quality breakfast or lunch. The atmosphere used to be of a higher class which you expected there.
The new atmosphere of the Hawthorn feels at best like an over glorified Denny’s restaurant. Breakfast buffet expensive at $31 per person, with limited choices, overcooked bacon, and lukewarm coffee served in the thermos cans.
Quite honestly if I want a decent bacon and egg breakfast at a good price and hot coffee I prefer to go to A&W.
Fairmont Palliser we won’t be back , if this is the best you can do under the Fairmont name then people are just getting ripped off staying there or eating there.
Fantastic dinner, great night out. We loved every dish and our server provided great advice and info on the menu.
The food was delicious, however, I was very disappointed with the overall experience. A beautiful, elegant, old hotel deserves a beautiful, elegant, formal dining experience. It is great to have a casual eatery, but that should not be the only option. I was also hugely disappointed that the menu is designed for sharing only. Really??!! What happens if someone is travelling on business and is dining alone, as is often the case? My dining partner and I had to do some major problem solving to figure out how we were going to make the menu work for us. I will stay at the hotel again but will be looking elsewhere for eating options.
The food was outstanding, and the family style they were providing was very unique.
We started with pre-dinner drinks. The cocktail was $16. A Caesar was $14. A 9 ounce glass of wine was $26. So, before we had any food, the drinks were $82! No where on the menu did it say that the various dishes were to be shared. The server assumed that we should know, but finally caught on that it was our first visit. Everything he mentioned was his favourite or was 'sensational'. He had a few more favourites at some other tables. We felt he was insincere. After we ordered the glass of wine, he asked if we'd ever had that wine before? If we needed his advice on the wine, we would have asked for it. The duck was very good but the serving was small for two. The endive salad needed a better dressing (too bland). Brussel Sprouts were good. One of us is lactose intolerant. We ordered a chocolate tart for dessert. We were told the tart had cream so we could only have one. Well, the cream was in the sauce and it could have been left off to make it lactose free. Not much trouble to go to. Bring back the Rimrock!!
Very nice brunch with my family. we had all been before and preferred guitar player singer to keyboard but otherwise very lovely setting.
Wonderful place to dine or enjoy a handcrafted cocktail. Service was outstanding as well
We had a great Boxing Day brunch! Excellent service! I love the ambience as well- we will return in the future.
When we arrived at Hawthorne the host brought us to a small two top which was sandwiched between two other occupied tables. The restaurant was about 50% full so I would have preferred to sit elsewhere but not a big deal. The ambience and decor are top notch - I especially appreciated the crystal water pitchers
Our server was named Peter - he was very friendly and did a good job of explaining the menu. We ordered two cocktails which were expertly made and well presented. For dinner we ordered a shrimp cocktail to start and then the ribeye for two, cauliflower, and gai lan. We were told the steak would take 40 to 45 minute which makes sense considering it’s size - 32oz.
Halfway through finishing our shrimp cocktail we ordered a bottle of Barolo to have with the steak. Before we were finished with the shrimp cocktail the steak and sides arrived - so about 10 minutes from when we placed our food order which is very fast. Quick food is usually welcomed, but we did not have steak knives, plates, and most importantly we did not have wine. The manager told us that the steak is Sous Vide to speed up the cooking process and then grilled - which is why it was so quick. This is where I would say our experience went from delightful to below average. Sous Vide is a great way to cook a steak to a very specific temperature quickly, but you often lose a lot of flavour and the fat in the steak is often rubbery.
It took about five minutes to get everything missing which is fair - I don’t think Peter expected the food to come so quick either. He poured a bit of the Barolo to taste - unfortunately the wine was corked. The manager came back and said the wine was “a bit off” (quite condescendingly) and offered to bring us something else which would complement the steak better. We got a Cabernet from Knights Valley which was also corked, so we just got the bill and paid.
We didn’t expect anything, but a simple sorry or thanks for your understanding would have gone a long way.
A fantastic evening out. We arrived for our annual Christmas double date and were greeted with the warmest of welcomes, along with the preparation of our special requests. Our waiter, Joseph, was delightful and friendly through the entire evening and more than willing to provide suggestions. The atmosphere and music were divine and entirely the environment wanted for this evening. We plan to visit a minimum of once a month from here onwards!
We had reserved for Brunch at eleven. My mistake not asking if Brunch was ALaCarte. Menu items however exceeded our expectations. The bartender acted as waiter and bartender. He was amazing. So attentive, friendly and truth be told made our Brunch the best! Sorry with new restaurant that traditional Brunch is no longer but do not hesitate to try the menu. Excellent
The new renovations are thoughtful and up-to-date without losing the historic charm or the Fairmount. It’s a large space but not austere. Service was very good and most of our dishes were excellent. I’d give 4-4.5 for everything we ate.
The perfect venue for Christmas. The food was great with huge portions
Prior to the renovation, the restaurant had a very nice menu selection, and the food quality was quite exceptional. For the price for a dish, there are higher expectations and unfortunately they could not deliver. Such as the Hawthorn bread, $7.00 however there were 5 small, burnt pieces of toast, and some butter and another topping. You could taste the burnt smell throughout the bread. The Brussel sprouts were recommended by the waiter, ordered it as per the waiter recommendation. Small plate, burnt beyond, extremely salty. for $13.00. Shrimp cocktail, was quite disappointing. Expected it to come in a glass, as per the word cocktail but came in a plate filled with ice with 5 medium size shrimps. for $19.00. The expectation we had going in from our last visit to this visit was completely different, and extremely disappointed. Great place for social gatherings, for drinks but not a place for a family to dine for the price that was paid. The waiter was very friendly, and our old waiter prior to the renovation recognized us and came over and greeted us, asked to help take some photos, and told the waiter it was my parents anniversary so at the end they brought out a very nice little dessert which was very appreciated. Service was overall good, the food however, and the value of the meal, was rather disappointing.
Everything was perfect as usual
It took much too long for the food to come out. There were not many people in the restaurant.
Excellent meal and service. Thanks
Everything was great. We would have liked to have had a glass of wine with our lunch but starting at $15 for 5 oz was way too steep for us. A reasonably priced house wine would have been nice.
We are 4 gentlemen who meet each year for a Xmas lunch and gift exchange. We missed last year due to your renos. Yesterday, we all missed the "old" bar area with the high back leather chairs and atmosphere. The new set-up is too "girly"..pillows everywhere, designer chairs and small tables. The parking to the east cost each of us $25...we won't be back...sad.
Nice renovations. Pasta with lamb shoulder came with very nice sauce & generous portion of meat. Karaage chicken sandwich was nicer than a hamburger. Coffee was surprisingly substandard for a major hotel for a major hotel but not the worst. Pretty good price for lunch. Worth gong again but should try Americano instead of regular coffee next time.
Breakfast with son- last week of achool
A must try in Calgary! There is something on this menu for even the pickiest of eaters, and the food is fantastic. Well curated, beautifully designed, and worth every bite! It's unfortunate the restaurant isn't more affordable but you can splurge once in a while and this one is well worth it!
Always an outstanding experience at Hawthorn. Would recommend it to anyone looking for a new spot to check out in downtown Calgary
Excellent restaurant that has the beautiful character of a historic hotel and restaurant blended with a hip and current vibe. Excellent cocktails, lively atmosphere and delicious food.
We had a very flavourful dinner, the drinks and the food were outstanding. The server brought us a dessert that was not in the menu as a surprise and I absolutely loved it. Great service and the ambiance was great for a Friday night.
Everything we had was great and perfectly done. It was really a pleasure to dine here. Highly recommended.
Food was just ok, took an hour to get breakfast.. ambience is very nice.. just go for a drink and take in the beautiful building
Can't beat the ambience. Very attentive service . Good food and value.
The food wasn’t memorable except the trout and the sauce for the peri peri chicken. Portions small for the chicken and the 12oz steak has a lot of fat and gristle.
The sides are very expensive for what you get. Service ok, not great.
Won’t be back
Food was just ok for the price. Steak was over cooked and chewy but they did take it off of our bill so overall we were happy with the experience. Would go again.
Peter was amazing! Super friendly and welcoming, the place is gorgeous and the food is so gooddd!!
Awesome! I had the lamb pasta dish which was delicious. Only thing was there was a lot of au jus in the bottom. The server immediately wanted to take it away and get the kitchen to “fix” it but I told her all I needed was a bit of bread to sop up the goodness. So she comped me an order of Hawthorn bread. Perfect!!!
A couple minor mishaps, and quiet cramped for our larger group and it took a while for drinks so we were ordering two at a time.
Was fantastic food and service.
