We had a wonderful dinner at John's Grill on Saturday, November 27. We went there to celebrate our daughter's birthday and sat at the bar for a bit and the bartenders were very nice and attentive. Then we sat upstairs and had a delicious meal. It was such a wonderful evening and we look forward to returning.
Don’t let the outside fool
You. Great food, drinks, and service. We enjoyed our meals, see you again next year. 💯🔥
Great little place with a warm, intimate ambiance and fascinating history. We went here for my son's 18th birthday and everything was fabulous. The martini's were perfection, my filet was the tenderest I've ever had, my husbands strip steak was incredible and my son said the fish and chips (yes, in a steak house LOL) were the best he's ever had. I can attest as I tried a bite. Our waiter was extremely attentive, but allowed us to enjoy ourselves and a great meal without feeling rushed. We will definitely go back.
Traditional high quality American food … steaks and seafood and great burgers… all deliciously prepared and served at speed.
Amazing food and service!
We always love this place!
Amazing food and service!! The ribeye was perfect and the vino too!
Excellent service, food is always good and presented well.
I always bring visitors to San Francisco to Historic John's Grill for an immersion into Bagdad-by-the-Bay, made famous by Dashiel Hammett, Herb Caen and a parade of colorful personalities. Really? Where else does Mr. Speaker Willie Brown regularly hold court? The lamb chops are guaranteed to be perfect. The Bernaise sauce is exquisite and the Caesar salad spot on. The martini's are shaken hard. Nothing is amiss. My 5 guests from last night are singing praises this morning. Another great look back at my San Francisco that continues to please, again and again.
Traditionally dine at John’s Grill on Black Friday. Our 30th year. It is a marvelous example of old San Francisco charm. So cozy and welcoming. Beautifully decorated for the holidays. Great, reasonably priced food and wonderful service. Provided Kir Royales on the house to our party to celebrate our anniversary.
Classic old San Francisco. Service was great! As was the Cosmopolitan cocktail.
Great food, environment & service.
3rd time coming to dine and i always enjoy it.
Drab. Understaffed. Crappy shrimp Louis.
Service was excellent and ambiance was great. Easy to talk at our table and not too loud. Busy night for a Sunday. Food was great. My lamp chops did not have mint sauce and was not warm enough for my taste. Drinks were great and deserts were wonderful.
Not very nice sitting outside, quality was mediocre at best, obviously past it.
Lamb chops and filet medallions were delicious! Service was attentive.
We thoroughly enjoyed our small room on the third floor for a group of 11. Service was excellent from cocktails, through appetizers, dinner, and dessert. Everyone raved about their food: vegetarians and carnivores alike.
We celebrated our 40th anniversary. Nat took excellent care of us. The dinner was fantastic (lamb chops and salmon) and we had a wonderful evening.
Always fantastic. We love coming every time we are in SF.
Like going back to old time in San Francisco when I was young. I celebration my 81 birthday. Great fun.
Loved dining in this historic restaurant. Bring back the oysters!
Great food, drinks, and service.
Love this restaurant. Always try to visit when we’re in the city!!
We had a wonderful time. The atmosphere was casual and welcoming. Wonderful staff. We plan to go back when visiting San Francisco
What a fantastic evening! Service was great, food was the best! Everyone was friendly, polite and helpful. Service was spot on! Everything was so clean, felt very safe there.
A fantastic classic steakhouse with an excellent dirty gin martini.
As locals for many, many years John's Grill is still our steakhouse for dining. There are many steakhouses in SF in which we also patronize. If you're looking for a historical great food and old world service, this is your place to dine.
John's Grill is great, old-school, classy San Francisco. Excellent service all around. Menu offers many eye-catching choices -- steaks, seafood, salads, and more. For lunch, I started with a hearty lunch salad with seasonal greens and bleu cheese dressing, and the Jumbo Prawns Dijonnaise. Wow. Huge prawns and mushrooms in a rich and creamy sauce. My friend ordered the mouth-watering Medallions of Beef (Filet Mignon) in a Bearnaise Sauce and potato gratin. Steps away from Union Square and Westfield Mall.
It’s been around forever and you have a good chance of a celebrity sighting in San Francisco
Great place with character. Good service and food was wonderful.
Our party of 8 had a wonderful meal and experience at John's Grill. The food was excellent, the server was wonderful, where they placed us, at a big, round table, really allowed group conversation, and the acoustics in the restaurant were good, so we could hear each other. A truly wonderful experience.
Food was great. Service was excellent.
Great food and service. Alas, we were the only famous people there.
Restaurant is amazing in historical atmosphere- we ate outside which didn’t have any atmosphere.
We love this place. We drive an hour to eat at john’s. We don’t even think of other options in city. It’s always this place. Always consistent and great. Even our kids are in love with it.
Not my first visit here. Ate at John’s 60 years ago with my grandparents. It never gets old or stale. Jack LaLane salad is one of the best in the city. Steaks are good and mine last night was cooked perfectly!
It was our first time and we had a wonderful experience! The food was great!
On this visit I would say John’s Grill is back to pre-covid levels , very busy dining room. We celebrated a birthday and enjoyed Caesar salad, escargot, medallions of beef with prawns and Jerusalem chicken. Very hearty portions. While we were perusing the dessert menu, our server brought over a flan with birthday candle, and singing birthday song, rousing nearby guests to singalong. Love the dark cozy atmosphere, classic American food, friendly, warm and efficient service, and the birthday surprise.
Great old restaurant with so much history and character. Best salmon I have had in a long time. Thanks.
