The Wildflower Restaurant at The Fairmont Chateau Whistler
Tried Il Caminetto for the first time. Don't know why we waited so long. Service was great and food was delicious. Shared the burrata caprese and hummus as our starters. Hummas was smooth and had lots of flavour. Would have made it even better if it came with some pita chips or something crunchy. Still worth trying. For mains we shared the saffron spaghetti of lobster and Bistecca Alla Florentina. The steak came with an arugula salad, roasted cauliflower, and fingerling potatoes. Everything was delicious and very well prepared. They even had a kids menu which was great for our 2 kids. Will definitely have another meal at Il Caminetto the next time we're in Whistler.
Our server was very attentive and very pleasant, but we found the restaurant very noisy and we had a hard time hearing him. The menu was not especially exciting to us, the food was quite good but not as amazing as we had expected. The appetizers were not as appealing as we would have expected, the halibut was absolutely perfect but the duck was somewhat tasteless - I expected a more gamy taste, but instead it was kind of difficult to distinguish from pork. Veggies were nice and the presentation was beautiful. The desserts were not as good as expected... loved the tea cup idea for the tiramisu, but too much cocoa on top and lacking the coffee or alcohol flavor that I like. I was disappointed that the server's assistants forgot about the 70th birthday request to have a candle on my husband's dessert, but he will survive. So, compared to our many experiences with restaurants like Araxi, Rimrock, and Red Door in Whistler, this was not as amazing as we had expected - a little underwhelming.
My husband and I were there on a Monday night, so the restaurant was quiet. Our server, a French snowboarder, was very attentive and other young lady who took our second drink order was as sweet and kind as he was. The food! I had hummus, risotto, duck, and ice cream and my husband had warm olives, kanpachi, steak, and olive oil cake - yum! I was most impressed with how the chef cooked kanpachi. I am Japanese and have had kanpachi before. Although I am usually skeptical about non-Japanese cooking kanpachi (sorry, not being discriminative, but had been disappointed before at other pricy restaurants), at Il Caminetto, it was perfectly done and exceeded my expectation beautifully! I imagined the dish would be like kanpachi carpaccio, but it was thicker sliced and prepared nicely that tasted like sashimi scallops. Loved the risotto. Medium rare rib eye was so flavourful (we shared and liked his beef more than my duck), and I wish there were one more scoop of vanilla ice cream and mango sorbet each! Thank you for the fantastic meal and the memorable interactions with those nice serving staff members. Amazing experience!
Second time in two weeks that I’ve dined at ail Caminetto- the food was wonderful the attentive staff and service pace was perfect and the environment was just right for us
Service and food was amazing as usual. When we first arrived it was quite busy and therefore very noise. It got calmer after around 40 min
My favourite restaurant in Whistler. The service team is exceptional. They remembered the table I like to sit at, they accommodated our every need and went above and beyond as per usual and why I love it here so much. The food was fantastic as well. Nicely done!
The food and the service were truly exceptional. A very special last night in Whistler!
Excellent food and service we were very happy with our experience.
Beautiful atmosphere , highly knowledgeable staff, delicious food . Favourite restaurant in Whistler.
Enjoyed a fine dinner and only downside was the acoustics are poor and the noise is very high so difficult at times to hear.
Our waitress was on a training shift and she did an excellent job.
Never disappoints. Whenever i am in Whislter, i always make sure to have dinner here. Everything balances well at Caminettos, and the team that has created this place deserves acknowledgement of their fine work.
I love the Caminetto for a date night or a girl’s night. The spring special was on which made it even more fun and affordable. Perfect service that’s not snobby but knowledgeable and a beautiful wine selection. Get a glass of Moscato to finish off the night.
Overall I was disappointed with our experience even though I scored the evening as "Good" (mainly due to company and event)
Menu options: Prix fixe or a la carte...
I'm always surprised by promos that are not what they appear to be...I once went to an "all-inclusive" resort which had many items available at an additional cost to the "all-inclusive" price.
I felt the same way during our evening...many items on the "prix fixe" menu were available for an additional supplemental cost.
I am dismayed by this. If an item cannot be included without the supplement then it should stay in the a la carte menu...I am bothered by the notion that I got my "appetizer, first course and dessert" for "free" as a result of paying extra for a main course item.
In addition to the above, I felt the salad portion was a lovely presentation, but could have been a little bigger...three small roasted cauliflower florets was hardly a tasting. My ONE tortelloni ( the word is plural an implies more that one) was cold and under cooked and my fish was overcooked.
I am not in the habit of leaving reviews such as this. I do feel somewhat obliged to given we spent $400.00 and no one was raving about the taste and quality of the food.
Kitchen staff and chef can do better.
It was very quiet when we arrived early but even as it filled up the noise level was only moderate. Our waiter, Matthew, was excellent and the kitchen was able to accommodate my difficulty with vinegar. Food excellent and I highly recommend it.
My husband and I went for my bday dinner. We were sat in a nice spot in the corner of the restaurant. It took some time for our waiter to come to our table and when he did asked us if we wanted sparkling water and got our drink orders. We asked for sparkling. He left and seemed to forget about both regular or sparkling as ten minutes went by and we had another man ( manager?) pour us water.
We ordered our appetizer, which took very long to get to our table, and at which time we had to ask for bread ( the waiter poured olive oil in a dish but never offered us bread). At this time, the waiter realized we had not yet received our sparkling number water and gave us some, “free of charge.”
When deciding on which wine to order with dinner, the waiter suggested two to try. We decided on one, but again, it took a long time for the waiter to come back to our table and another waiter brought us the wine as we told him we were ready for the wine but didn’t know where the waiter was.
When the dinner finally came, which I am sure took half an hour, my husbands pasta was undercooked. At this point, we felt so disappointed by the overall experience, we wanted to leave.
The lack of service, long wait times, and undercooked pasta was such a disappointment as I know the service and food quality at this restaurant can be phenomenal.
The manager and restaurant director did apologize and did not ask for us to any for the meal, but I am not sure this is a restaurant I would ever return to given the competition in the area.
Casual dinner with exceptional service and outstanding food.
Nice ambiance for a special occasion dinner. Service was top notch. Good selection of Italian Wine. Our waiter (Steve) was very professional and took good care of us, thanks again!
Phenomenal experience overall.
From the moment we walked thru the doors to the goodbye
I am sure a majority of the time it’s a blessing and much needed capital, but there are times it can be unfortunate what new ownership will do to an institution. We’ve been vacationing in Whistler almost yearly to ski since 1982 and every time we come up a dinner at Il Caminetto di Umbertos was on the short list. After tonight not so sure. The new ownership has done a nice job with the decor and the bar is a much needed improvement. The menu however has lost its charm. It’s no longer Italian really, save a couple must haves such as lasagne and ‘something’ bolognese. Understand you look to freshen things up, add new, etc, but the Umberto’s we knew has been thoroughly rinsed out of the establishment.
There is much to like about the Caminetto. Great looking room. Decent table separation. Lovely, well prepared food. Knowledgeable wait staff and reasonable value. A place you look forward to spending an evening. .........But......... the room is way, way too noisy. Not a little noisy, but so loud you have to strain to hear people who are not seated directly from you.
It will be interesting to see if they address this issue although I could be a lone voice.
Great food with amazing service!
Pricy but worth it!
A lovely dining experience. Food, wine and service all on point.
An excellent meal overall. The noise level was on the high side for a restaurant of this calibre.
We eloped to Whistler from Vancouver, and had had dinner at Il Caminetto. They went above and beyond to make us feel special, with lots of little extras. The food and service were wonderful - so glad we chose it for our big day.
Don't miss this. It's by far one of the best choices. Order Burrata. Order some home made pasta. Oh my.. it's all good. Insane sauces. Really I wanted the entire menu! SPECTACULAR!
Food and service were both excellent. Wine was overpriced.
My new favourite whistler restaurant! Food, drinks and atmosphere was amazing. Will be back.
What a fabulous evening! Food, service and ambience did not disappoint. Felt as though we had been transported to New York City. Other restaurants in Whistler need to follow suit and consider renovating/revamping as Il Caminetto has done.
Love this restaurant and wholeheartedly recommend it! (but see the second paragraph for a disclaimer) It was just my husband and me for this visit so we split the rib eye. Last time we were there we had four of us and shared the bistecca all fiorentina and were blown away. The rib eye was not as good, but our expectations were set too high for a different cut and preparation. A gentlemen beside us had the lasagna and reported it was superb. We shared the daily pasta special, which was a lamb ragu and it was delicious. The texture of the house made pasta was remarkable.. We also had the burrata with grilled pear antipasti. It was literally such a delight to behold. I know that sounds a bit over the top, but seriously, it was poetry to eat. The pear looked like a little forest floor. I would order it again just to look at it, but the house made burrata was very good in and of itself.
I have only one thing to say in the negative and if seems to be becoming the trend: the drink prices are ridiculous. My husband doesn't drink, so we don't get a bottle. Glasses of wine are only available as 5oz pours and then a half liter (about 31oz). So for 2 glasses of wine over the coarse of my dinner I added about $75 to the bill. And that was for entry level California cab.
Exceptional food and service. Birthday dinner while in Whistler
Excellent, great food... fantastic service, this is a restaurant that you have to visit in Whistler 😀
Most Everything was great, as usual, unfortunately my husband’s steak had some really tough strings, which was unexpected and disappointing.
Excellent halibut special. Top notch experience.
Carpaccio is the best ever!
I don't really want to write a review for this restaurant - it might become so popular that next time I
want to book I might not get a table!
It was a wonderful evening - delicious dinner, great service [ look out for the excellent Irish waiter] and
fabulous negroni's in a relaxing atmosphere.
Wonderful meal in all respects. Great service and amazing food.
Wonderful. The prosciutto was dreamy. So light and and delicate and delicious. The bread is so good. Everything was lovely. I’ll be back.
Fantastic restaurant , staff are absolutely spot on . Professional, attentive , knowlegable and personable. Food was superb , second visit for us there will definately be a third . The ambience of the restaurant is also excellent . Would not hesitate to recommend the place
We were excited to try the newly remodeled restaurant. Our experience was mixed. The server was friendly but not attentive. She never apologized for the slow delivery of our appetizer or asked us how it was. The scallops were delicious but not very warm which spoiled it for me. I have a feeling it was sitting in the kitchen waiting to be brought to us.
The main courses were mixed. The fusilli pasta was undercooked but very hot. My dish was warm at best. We waited 15 plus minutes for it. The server did come by to say it would be out soon only to wait what would have been the typical amount of time for an order. There was clearly a problem with one of the dishes and it left a bad taste of our experience. I would have expected an apology and part of the meal to be comped.
Someone did come by with 2 glasses of lemoncello. Unfortunately, no mention of the problem was made and my husband does not drink.
My assessment is that they need more help in the kitchen and better training to know how to appropriately handle problems that inevitably arrive. I expect more from a restaurant of this caliber.
