We arrived to find it closed until 2020
Turned up for our booking (placed our booking 2 months in advance) only to find it has now closed. No communication letting us know, and no communication since asking what went wrong.
Fair enough it's closed (for good we assume). But not letting us know is a bit rich!
RESTAURANT WAS CLOSED 2 WEEKS EARLIER! Good thing it wasn’t a special occasion! They never bothered to let Open Table know they’re not in operation. We showed up and it was dark. No sign, nothing.
The restaurant is closed long-term and neither the restaurant nor Open Table contacted us to bring this to our attention. In fact, I received a reservation reminder from Open Table this afternoon. When we arrived at restaurant it was dark with doors locked. Front desk said it closed 2 weeks ago, for a long-term overhaul. As we made out reservation months ago, this is a significant oversight that hopefully won’t be repeated for too many others.
Our experience was NOT what we had expected at all. This review is actually meant for the Makana Terrace which was kind enough to accommodate us because we were NEVER notified that the Kauai Grill was closed and no longer in operation! Other than the view, there really is nothing notable about this once wonderful place. Sadly my beet salad was a huge disappointment with a few beets, something that resembled some weeds and a small smear of goat cheese. My main course was the opah and half lobster tail and it was just ok. For dessert we shared the chocolate torte, which was the best part of the meal. Our advice: until this resort gets itself together and makes some significant changes in how they are running things, avoid it and go somewhere else.
The food, service & ambiance were good, just a little spendy. 22 oz bone in ribeye for $69.
Beautiful sunset evening and my scallop dish was fantastic. I was a bit hesitant with the reservation because reviews were mixed and we knew prices would be high. Only disappointment was booth was too small for a group of four and 2 in our group unfortunately had their backs to the sunset view and is what you are paying a premium for. We are not large people. Suggest larger U shaped booths/tables to accommodate four near the windows for dinner prices. All desirable view seating is only for 2 and not a group of 4. Price was high for overall value.
Service was slow... food was meh... the view was great.
I’ve heard good thing things about this place and excited to try it out. We were hotel guest and travel often. One of our favorite things to do is try new places for dinners. This place has seen better days. The service was slow and the waiter was average. We were celebrating a birthday and I called ahead and nothing was done or even a knowledges. I ordered drinks and the waiter completely forgot. The food was average. I had the surf and turf. I asked for medium, it was over cooked and the surf was bland. I ordered a side of the potatoes and they were way too salty. I grabbed the checked, paid and left. I would never return. Overpriced, small portions and average food.
Very slow and lacking service. Beautiful sunset with average food. Probably wouldn’t return
Typical hotel restaurant. Average food and expensive price.
Great food, great view, amazing service. Will definitely be back
Kauai Grill hits it on all cylinders - great food, awesome service and the view is spectacular! We will definitely return the next time we visit Kauai!
Great place in Princeville to go for romance and a nice dinner. Amazing views and ambiance. Portions are a bit small for the cost but we left satisfied. We enjoyed their Ahi poke appetizer. My husband had the octopus appetizer which was very good and I had the sweet potatoes soup which I loved. We both had the Mahi which was the only fish entree on the menu. That was very good too. We ended with the bread pudding which was small but just enough to satisfy a sweet tooth. Our waiter was very polite and accommodating. He even took us outside to get pictures during the sunset. Not somewhere I would go every night for dinner but if you are looking for a romantic, solid dinner with amazing views would recommend.
Freezing temperatures inside, however food is good
We were very very disappointed.
The only thing good about the meal was our Sequoia...our waiter. He was the best.
We also ordered a side dish of broccoli. It came sitting in water on the plate. It tasted like they boiled it for 3 minutes put it on the plate, sprinkled a very very light dusting of parmesan cheese. It was like eating boiled broccoli without anything on it.
And, the rest of the meal had the same non flair, non taste.
But, you can believe the prices have flair.
The service was terrible! Michael was “supposed” to be our waiter, he never arrived until well after the restaurant manager had come by, taken (and delivered) our drink order, and then came back to take our dinner order. When dinner did arrive, they were missing one of the side orders. Food itself was good, but by the time we left, the poor service overall creates a very negative experience.
NOT a pleasant experience, except in the service from the manager.
This was our second time and was excellent but still pricey as you pay for the spectacular view. Only complaint is small portions of food for what you pay. It would not kill them to add slightly more quantity like 4 scallops instead of three only on that plate. Typical high end resort.
Experienced service staff that are very pleasant.
The service was great. The food was good, but we really missed the tasting menu. The menu could have been much more exciting.
Great service, great food and best view in the world.
Overall the view and atmosphere was great, but food deserves to be better. Octopus was fine, but dry. Steak is definitely was Bad - taste with no spices((( cocktail looks good and that’s all
The food and service was great. Had a table right by the window and was able to view the sunset during dinner! The valet parking was really easy.
Relaxed, low key vibe with attentive service and a very creative menu. Be prepared to pay for this though.
Service was poor Forgot Birthday request Food was very average Asked for window seating They were putting us in the back Overall totally disappointed in KauI Grill Would not recommend
Delicious tasting, beautiful views of the ocean and great service except the food service was a little slow coming out and the server allowed too much time to lapse between courses. We wish the restaurant wasn't so noisy..perhaps high-back chairs and booths would soften diners' voices? Otherwise, we will definitely be dining here again the next time we visit the island! Thank you!
Not the same like it used to be. Service was good drinks was good but the food was ok missed the old menu
As a vegetarian your stuck w/an awful beet salad. You can get a piece of local fish for less than $20 . Menu needs complete over haul and is out dated. I won't go back until Starwood takes over.
I would recommend dining here if you're able to get a window seat while it's still light out. Food took a long time to come out and they weren't busy, some items were cold/lukewarm and others hot. So maybe just order a salad and have a drink.
Excellent if pricey restaurant. Situated in the swanky St. Regis Princeville Resort, in an elegant and quiet dinning setting, we enjoyed a very good meal. After sharing a shrimp cocktail appetizer, Dana had an excellent and perfectly cooked filet. I ordered the surf and turf and it was excellent as well. We finished with a tasty molten lava chocolate cake. Expensive menu. Nice atmosphere and service was very good. We were lucky to eat in three excellent Kauai restaurants and this was one.
Better views from literally any other restaurant on property. Only 4 tables near windows. Was hoping food would make up for lack of view but waited an hour for our order and food was lukewarm when we got it. Drinks were strong and there was a terrace we could run out to to watch sunset.
Great place to watch the sunset! Menu was a little pricey but food was delicious.
This is a great restaurant for a special night out. If you can get a reservation for sunset, do it.
Was a bit disappointed with our last meal. We’ve previously been and loved our entire experience. This evening we had very mediocre service, and even the manager noticed it was happening. Would still most definitely return to this restaurant.
Service was slow. Our serving attendant had too many tables.
Worst service at this price point EVER. Never checked on us, asked about more cocktails, refilled water. Nothing. So disappointing
Very substandard and lacking its former charm and cuisine. Now....it’s just food
Quality and creativity have both declined to a new low. Closure of the Terrace has introduced noisy kids; there are few fine dinner choices in the neighborhood
High end restaurant with high end prices. Food was good, but my steak was over cooked. If you are paying those prices your food should be prepared correctly. Service was again good, but not amazing. Sat facing window for sunset, but having to squint does kill the ambience a touch. All in all a good high end place to eat, but I’ve eaten better in DC.
This place was beyond awful! Service was s slow, food took forever to get, and once food came it was overcooked and cold.
Very expensive for what you get
