We decided, on a whim, to go out “in 15 minutes” to dinner – on a Sunday night. That’s sometimes when the “B” team takes over at a restaurant. So I was expecting less of an experience, than on our previous visit. But if anything, it was even better! We thought the food was so good before, that we both ordered the very same cocktails, starters and entrees, all over again. (Same table, same waiter, too. ;-). The food came out even hotter; the drinks even colder. We watched the football game, over the bar. Took our time. Wonderful evening. I make better biscuits—but this is still one of our favorite places in Old Town Alexandria, for quality and value. Good space between tables. Though depending upon who’s partying that night, it might get loud. (A lot of hard surfaces.) Four thumbs-up from both of us!

The ambiance was lovely. The food was ok. My friend ordered the Virginia Breakfast. The bacon is pork belly and it was more on the softer side than crispy. The ham smelt horrible. The biscuits were dry and hard. Unfortunately, she didn’t joy her meal. We were celebrating for her birthday. I had the egg white omelette. It was light and freshening. The egg whites could have used a bit of seasoning but overall it was good. The deviled eggs were good. Heavy ok the mustard but the best thing we tried because the Prosecco. The Prosecco was lovely. Semi sweet. Brunch wasn’t my cup of tea however, I would like to go back to try their dinner.

The service was really poor. They weren’t that busy. They weren’t that friendly. Much better ambience on the blocked off section of King St closer to the water. The egg white omelet was very bland.

We’re locals—with a mildly negative view of most of our neighborhood restaurants. Many of which seem to count on a tourism business with one-time visitors. We dine at K&R every couple of weeks (mid-week)—and find the food and cocktails reliably good. (The prices are also a decent value for King Street… and the noise level is low enough to hold a conversation.) We’ve tried everything on the menu and have our favorites—and sometimes disagree over whether a dish is at its best or not. You might, too. But taken all together, K&R has become a regular go-to for us, whenever we’d like to be sure of a quality, leisurely meal.

Sooo, I am super confused so many great reviews written king and rye. Our food had no taste. The food was so tasteless. I made a comment about whether I had Covid or not LOL. I do not have Cove it. The food was just extremely unseasoned, I was very shocked, because so many reviews are opposite of my experience last night. I’m not certain if the chef was new , I’m not certain if that could’ve been the reason for why the food tasted so bad, however, our waiter was extremely nice and comped our meal, even the appetizers were underwhelming bad. The crabcake super mushy no taste the cornbread extremely hard crumbly no taste I am very disappointed. This restaurant is supposed to be a southern cuisine inspired restaurant. I don’t know what is southern about this restaurant. I am really just scratching my head at this point nonetheless , I will not be returning to this restaurant.

I took a group from out of town here for dinner and was very disappointed. The food is blah, no real flavor for anything and the service we received was even worse. The waiter was rude and quick not showing us any hospitality. My drink- Old Fashion was great! That said I would only come back to drink at the bar

The crispy red potatoes were very good. Everything else was ok at best. The creamer for the coffee was sour and bitter the waiters response was "Oh yeah people have been complaining about it for the past couple days, but I think it is just supposed to taste like that". The menu available did not match the online menu and had only one vegetarian friendly option.

We were seated and waited 30 minutes and not one server came to our table or even brought us water. I know they were busy because it was restaurant week but that is unacceptable. We eventually moved to the bar and ordered through the bartender who was lovely.

Yesterday, we had dinner at King & Rye. The food was excellent highly recommend the Short Ribs and biscuits with butter and apple butter. Only complaint was our waiter. He introduced himself but other than that he was disengaged and seemed bothered. As he was taking our order he took his hand and pushed his hair out of his face. Maybe a hair band would help.

Service was good, but hard to communicate due to language barriers of the staff. Manager was the only person that I could actually speak with clearly. The food was NOT very good at all, just ok. Worst short ribs I’ve ever had and I usually love this dish. Crab cakes tasted soggy and watery. Some cocktails tasted watery and bland. Steak was just alright. Carrots looked burnt. I’m a foodie but left really disappointed. They didn’t even explain the parking options well on the phone. Also, don’t sit near the door unless you want to smell cigarette smoke blowing in every time it opens. Overall, not worth your time or money. I have no interest in ever going back to this restaurant.

A great restaurant in Alexandria that we have enjoyed many times. We had dinner during Restaurant week - 2 courses for $35 per person (your choice of entree and either a starter or dessert). Definitely no cutting back on portions - all were regular menu sizes (which does not always happen during this kind of event). My wife and I split the Maryland crab cakes - very light and tasty! For dinner we had the short ribs (falling apart delicious) and the NY strip steak (cooked perfectly) and finished by sharing the chocolate chip cookie (and ice cream!) served in a cast iron skillet. We split a bottle of Bourbon barrel aged Zinfandel which accompanied both of our meals perfectly. Highly recommend a visit!!

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but my two friends and I went to King & Rye for restaurant week. We enjoyed the muscles which were outstanding— great portion, and they came with garlic bread that was to die, for in order to dip in the sauce! I don’t usually eat bread, but it was hard to put down! One of my friends had the short ribs, and the portion was so large she couldn’t finish it, but she said they were delicious. I had the chefs cut steak, and it was cooked to perfection. Our third companion had the crabcakes, and the trout again the portions were so generous she took half of her dish home. The server was very attentive, and very nice all in all, it was a great experience! We will be back.!!

We went to King & Rye for Alexandria Restaurant Week and had their $35 option that included an entrée and either an appetizer or a dessert. The food was all good but not much more than that. A couple of dishes were disappointing, especially the watermelon salad that unexpectedly came smothered in a molasses sauce that I personally hated. The scallops and grits entrée was delicious. There was nothing wrong with our experience but I just wouldn't go back outside of restaurant week.

One of the reasons we like this restaurant is, it always seems a little under-attended (no clue why), so we can hold a conversation. The atmosphere is urban-dark, with deep grays and browns—held over from an earlier incarnation as the “Jackson 20” restaurant. We like the food—which is tilted “Southern”—while the service is always top-notch. Good cocktails, too (I’d steer you toward the whiskey-based,.. the gin ones sometimes seem wan or too sweet). We’re locals and come often (usually mid-week).

This was my first visit to King & Rye, but it won’t be my last. The food was wonderful; the service was great; and the indoor space was laid out in a way so that it didn’t feel crowded and it was easy to have conversations. I spotted the outdoor space, and it looked wonderful too. I’ve already recommended King & Rye to a friend.

Service was good. However I’d never go back for the food again. I was raised on southern food and this just wasn’t it. The cornbread was disgusting and inedible, fried green tomatoes was just a very weird flavor, the short rib was tender was lacked a noticeable southern flare and flavor. Whatever they put under the rib was not tasty; farror and asparagus soup. Lol. Nah. The gumbo my husband thought was decent. I’d never eat there again but my husband my go for drink.
