Located in the heart of Little Italy is our very first LC location. This is where the once pop-up based concept became a reality and where many people in Toronto first got to know us. Though we're surrounded by some amazing neighbours La Carnita stands alone as a Mexican offering in the area.View Private Dining Details
I was here for my birthday. The service was absolutely horrible. It really ruined the night for us. We had a reservation for 10:15, no one came to take our dinner order until last call at 10:45, and then we were told to leave shortly after 11. If everyone needs to leave at 11, do not take reservations for big groups up until 10:30. We spent a lot in the short time we were given an opportunity to order, and would have spent considerably more if it wasn’t such an awful experience. I t’s a shame it was such an awful experience. I’ve had a good time here in the past, but I do not want to risk another night like this one so I’ll be sure to never come back.
La Carnita is a trendy spot with a good music playing, beautiful interior and good appetizers and drink selection. The actual tacos themselves lacked good quality meat and the tortilla shells had a strange smell so I wasn’t overly impressed with them. The service was just okay but it took too long in between drinks to be asked if we would like more. Also, our first server seemed to be annoyed to be there and we didn’t appreciate that. Since it was a friends birthday it would have been nice to be offered a free shot or at least free dessert for the birthday girl. I would return for drinks to enjoy the appetizers and ambience.
The menu selection was very limited but food was very good. If you are hungry and expecting bigger portions - it’s more tapas style - a la carte. If you are looking for really healthy portions of Mexican food.. it’s not here... but looking for a good ambiance to hang out , share food, and have conversation in a nice ambiance this is it.
Outstanding food and atmosphere. It was our first time there and we will be back. Service was also excellent.
Really like this restaurant but my friends and I were all very annoyed/disappointed that they allowed us to make a reservation for 5pm and we showed up at 4:45pm and had to stand outside freezing because they didn’t open the doors until 5:05 even though they saw us standing outside and had knocked as well. Start your reservations at 5:15 then
Music was way too loud
The environment and food was overall good. However, the service was absolutely awful. Our waitress didn't once come to our table after she took our order. We had to ask where the food was multiple times. Very unpleasant server which made the whole experience sub-par.
as always consistenly great tasting, great service and great value
Everything was great - except for Valentine’s Day I would think there would be more space between tables. We were seated too close to neighboring tables leaving not much in terms of privacy/romantic dinner. Food was amazing as always, server was on top of it.
Food was great but service was non existent. Spoke with other servers more than our own.
We tried the "Winter Feels" - it was a good deal and a lot of food but the food was very heavy and did not taste that great
The tacos tasted great. Really small portion though for the price. Atmosphere was nice. The service could have been a lot better in terms of friendliness and attentiveness. It was difficult to get the server’s attention. Whether it was for a drink or placing another order or another bill.
Very tasty food, great overall experience. However, a bit pricy and tight setup.
Great venue and food. Staff was rude throughout the night.
Great food & ambience, but really let down by the overcrowded nature of the restaurant - felt like a trapped sardene.
Lost track of the number of times somebody's butt brushed up against me as they walked past my table - it's so tight you can't help but just get bumped and bruised by people.
Food was amazing! Service was great
Good food, but it's REALLY loud in this place. I think the acoustics are weird in this restaurant. We couldn't have a conversation at our table without yelling because it was really loud towards the back of the restaurant.
Service was quick. Food was excellent. Staff had a relaxed vibe and looked like they were genuinely enjoying themselves. Loud and fun place to grab a quick bite
As always I enjoyed my meal at La Carnita. I will say though that the other night's meal was EXCEPTIONALLY spicy and not in the way I like it. Both me and my guest had to stop between each bite to drink and allow our mouths to cool. I had Pollo Frito which I've grown accustomed to and this was def different. Also the music is very loud. We could barely hear each other.
Food was amazing ! I had 3 types of tacos (cod, chicken, and asada) and their meatballs and everything was delicious. I didn’t look at the prices before ordering drinks and thought the pitcher would just be more cost efficient and I was wrong—$60 for a pitcher seems extremely high. Other than that, I definitely would recommend the food !
The hostess was sullen and rude, half the food went back for being too pickled without any taste and they only have one hot sauce. Which is not spicy would not recommend or go back.
Atmosphere was nice. Food was tasty but very overpriced for the portion sizes. Drinks were expensive too but that's nothing new in Toronto. Daily drink deals weren't bad.
We ordered a few tacos without cilantro and after asking why there was cilantro on the tacos anyway, the server told us it comes already mixed into the salsa. Strange that they wouldn't give a heads up on that in case of allergy etc. and nothing was done about it.
Overall, pretty "meh" experience for such a huge price tag. Likely wouldn't go back.
We've been coming here for years and just this past visit we noticed the menu had changed. Food has slightly gone down in quality and taste compared to previous visits and prices have slightly increased, however overall still good mexican food, great hiphop vibes
Great ambience, great service and yummy food! Tacos were delish!
Very over priced and the tacos had way to much toppings that made it sloppy. Not the good toppings like meat and beef or chicken but the condiments on it. I found it not very fresh tasting and very over priced. I wouldn’t recommend this place to a friend. My mother and I ate three meatballs and six tacos, two beers and two glasses of wines (9oz). The bill was $115 and it wasn’t even that tasty. I don’t know if that chef that night was rushing or off his meds but the food was not good by far. Also be prepared for loud loud music. Especially if your right next to the speaker.
Delicious and flavourful tacos, one of the best in the city!!
It was great, food was delicious but service was slow tonight. Usually great!
Music is a little loud, hard to hear / talk to the person across from you. Space is also quite tight- maybe drop a table or two to make it more comfortable to be seated. The table space is also very very tight- hard to fit drinks and a med size plate.
The best tacos I ever had. I had been in Mexico several times in the past few years and the food at this restaurant is much better than the iconic Mexican restaurants in Playa del Carmen, Mexico City and Cancun . I prefer flour tortillas and they use them here. When I got my tacos I really thought that they were over priced because the size was just like the authentic tacos in Mexico. The difference is that you get 3-4 for the same price if you were there. After you have the first bite you understand why is priced this way. Is like a symphony in your mouth. Just fresh and delicious. Simple Mexican food with a twist that elevate it to a new level. The chorizo and pollo frito tacos are a must try and of course the chorizo meatballs and street corn. You won’t be disappointed.
Food and drinks were fantastic. The margarita is likely the best I have had, without being in Mexico (and better than most in Mexico).
Food was full of flavour and far above many other Mexican restos that are opening up around town.
I would have no troubles recommending La Carnita to anyone.
this hot stinky bunker was so noisy i could not hear myself think. i guess if you are looking for designer tacos and bad tasting cocktails this is the place for you. if you want a satisfying meal try another mexican restaurant. dont order Grow A Pear its gross.
Had a great time and the location was perfect for a night out.
Delicious food, great ambiance but I left hungry. It was a bit overpriced for what your received. Good place for apps but not for dinner.
Amazing restaurant. Have been going for years but this time specifically the service was spectacular and made turning 30 feel exceptional.
I like this place overall.
The vibe is cool, the set up is nice, great menu.
My only comment on my visit was I found the food as a whole overly salty.
If that was toned down a bit I would have scored the food ratings much higher.
Generally the food was good with lots of lavour though some of the food was served cold. There were great vegetarian options (street corn, tacos, etc).
We were dissapointed in the service near the end of our meal. We were a big group that ordered a lot of food (margarita pitchers, starters, lots of tacos and dessert) but the second we finished our last bite, the service staff kept giving us the impression that we were taking up space. No one thanked us or acknowledged us as we left the restaurant.
Food was very quick but felt very rushed. After receiving our starter, server seemed quite aggetated when we asked for more time before ordering tacos for our main dish. Felt like servers were swarming our table to grab plates and glasses before we had a chance to divey up the tacos or finish the drink. I have been here before and the food was as tasty as always but the service really put a damper on our overall experience. I understand the service business and need to turn over tables but made a reservation ordered quite a bit of food/drink and felt rushed right from the beginning.
Went here to celebrate my wife's birthday with some friends. Food was decent enough, just wished the tacos were a bit warmer. One of the fish tacos had almost no fish in it, also messed up one of our orders but that's no big deal. Took a while to get refills on our drinks also. So we had to wave down other servers to actually get a drink. Got to say the interior of the place is pretty cool though. The biggest let down was our main server. We had a few other servers help out but they were good.
So here's my main issue. I asked one of the servers that was helping take care of our table if they did anything for birthdays. He said "yes, we can get you a desert. Would you like the churros or tres leches?". Thinking that is was free we said yes because we would not usually pay $7 for three small churros (they were good though). Ended up seeing it was charges on the bill, I was not impressed. Asked one of the servers and he said i did charge it your main server must have. Asked our main server why it was charged since we were under the impression it was free since it was my wife's bd. Then she starting having attitude right away saying "I talked to you on the phone when you made the reservation and told you this!"..... I then informed her we never talked and when I called multiple times to confirm resevation no one answered. Her repley to everything was "oh well".... Oh well?? Went back and forth a bit aboit it. I ended up saying whatever ill pay the $7 but I am not happy about this. Thats amazing customer service.... And thats why I paid the $7 but she received no too. Would have tipped 20% on our $160 bill if she had even tried to give any customer service for the miss understanding. Anyways my wife and I, plus our 5 other friends will not be going back here.
I always have a good time at La Carnita. I’ve been to the other locations and this is my first time at the college restaurant. The thing I like about this place is, even though the menu is small, they do it right. Everything they make is great. Not a big selection but the food is excellent. The service was a bit hit and miss. It was a busy night and it seemed like something was going on that caused some confusion. The servers were polite though, which is always a plus. Even with just average service, it was still good. Didn’t take away at all from the experience. I’ll be back soon. Love this place.
