Contemporary French / American
Warm, cozy prohibition era decor in Victoria's 'Old Town". In 1882 Harry Johnson first published the Bartenders’ Manual/Guide for Hotels and Restaurants. He is still known today for his sagacious writings on service excellence and customer care. He bought the Little Jumbo Saloon in New York from a peer and rival named Jerry Thomas who had founded it in 1866. Because of Thomas’ pioneering work in popularizing cocktails across the United States; he is considered "the father of American mixology”. In addition to writing the seminal work on cocktails, his creativity and showmanship established the image of the bartender as a creative professional. We pay homage to these two and our Little Jumbo emphasizes the fine craft of preparing fresh local food with a focus on continental and contemporary and pairing it with fine wines and the best of classic and modern mixology. A particular emphasis is on creating exceptional customer experience, something very dear to Harry Johnson’s heart.

Absolutely beautiful, intimate restaurant. The kale salad is incredible, had a second order for dessert! Will definitely go again.

Truffle fries and flank steak dinner were wonderful as were the oysters. Rest of the food was average. Wine list was very limited and there's no option to have a cocktail while waiting for your table.

Thanks HeatherF. Unfortunately, as a restaurant/bar (food primary) our liquor license doesn't cover standing and drinking while waiting. Our capacity is at a set limit so when we are full (i.e. tables seated) our options & yours are limited. We work tirelessly on liquor regulation reform in BC, and would encourage you to do the same, as opposed tackling this through a review. We currently have 29 curated wines - the very best of BC & specific internationals specifically paired to our cuisine.

I think we caught them on a crazy night. We sat at the bar in lieu of our table because we love to interact with bartenders and get the scoop on the menu. This night she got sat almost the whole bar at once and was also the primary bartender for the restaurant, so she was in the weeds. We went with some recommendations which didn't turn out great for our taste palate, but some were fabulous. The Kale salad is by far the winner. The duck we could only choke down 1 bite and it was very tough and gamey. They didn't take it off the bill, which was disappointing, oh well. The first cocktail I ordered was way too sweet but she recovered with another where I described what I like. All in all, great ambience, but for the cost we just didn't feel it was worth it.

What a nice surprise to find this wonderful restaurant. Loved the food and great selection of wine. It’s the kind a restaurant you’d find in New York or San Francisco, it was small but quiet and we just loved it. We will be back

Exceeded expectations for ambience and wonderfully inventive cocktails. I don't eat meat, so not a lot of choices for food but the agedashi tofu was superb!

The cocktails were delicious and a must try. I had with gin and ginger and my partner had a tall one with whiskey and pineapple and lime I think. Both were extraordinary and tasty. I had the grilled kale to start and would definitely order it again; my partner had the olives. Entries were okay, I had the flank steak and fries; my partner had the mushroom pasta dish and said it was boring and not many mushrooms. Dessert, a chocolate cake that was okay, not too sweet which was good. I would definitely go back for the cocktails and appies.

We had an amazing meal, fun and creative cocktails and a very helpful and accommodating server. My friend had the lamb entre and asked for a cocktail that might pair well with it. So, the mixologist made an amazing cocktail that included a bit of lamb jus.... and it was de-lish. Wow! Talk about creative!! We’re from out of town, but will be back for sure, the next time we’re in Victoria.

Wow! My boyfriend and I went in for a date night and got completely spoiled! The food, service and drinks were all incredible. The chef came out and chatted with us and explained every dish he was extremely knowledgeable and made our experience unforgettable. Definitely the best time we’ve ever had at a restaurant. Huge thank you to all the staff there, you guys are killing it. 11/10

This hidden gem offers great food, cocktails and environment. Perfect for intimate meals with that special someone or just hanging out with friends. Everything that came out for. The kitchen was delicious, especially the truffle fries. The dessert was innovative and definitely gave us a new experience. Their drinks selection was so diverse and for the adventurous person, try any of the cocktails. I had a mocktail that had cold corr and ginger beer. The drink had a sour plum taste and went down pretty smooth. The ganche in the chocolate cake dessert was rich and gooey. We will definitely be back to try more in the future.

The selection and quality of the food was incredible. Its really a hidden gem that shines like crazy! If you're a foodie, then Little Jumbo's is where you want to go. Loved every course we had. And the drinks menu is incredibly varied for all tastes.

Little Jumbo's was recommended to my wife and I while waiting in line at another resto for breakfast. By two different people.
Definitely recommend it. And will absolutely go back next time we visit Victoria from Montreal.

Enjoy!

Food & service were very good. However, for the first time ever in our experience, our party of 4 (over age 55 and very mellow) were asked to leave 2 hours after our reserved time. We booked using open table did not notice that our dining time was limited to 2 hours. 4 of us planned to order dessert and after dinner drinks, but could not do so due to being asked to leave. An otherwise great evening unfortunately spoiled. Hard to overlook even though our server did comp us a free drink/dessert card to compensate for asking us to leave. In excess of $400 spent prior to leaving.

Little Jumbo Restaurant & Bar

Thanks for your note. Guests have the option of requesting a longer seating, this is clear in the booking process. Popular properties struggle with giving those waiting for the experience reasonable access, this is particularly true on a Friday night when we run a wait-list giving others an opportunity. For parties of 3-4 we set the 2 hour cycle, as this table size leaves in 1 hr 45 on average. It is a balancing act to satisfy all, and we compound that by having a great comfortable ambiance.

The first time we went to Little Jumbo, we waited just shy of an hour for our first round of drinks. Then when ordering wine, our server had to come back 3 times to tell us that our choices for wine were not available. The food was fine but over-priced for the experience.
The second time we went, our server was excellent but, in spite of an early reservation for a 30th birthday, we were seated by the kitchen which is blocked off by a curtain so those of us facing the kitchen were treated to blinding light each time someone went in or came out. Blinding because of the sharp contrast between the kitchen light and the darkness of the main room. The kitchen made a mistake with one of our appetizers but forgot to make a new one. As a result, we received the last appetizer when our main courses arrived. The server offered to comp it and that was great customer service. Again though, the food was pretty good but the fruit dessert with ginger ice cream was complicated and pretentious and not delicious. 500$ bill for 6. Both times. A fine price for a special dinner but only if the dinner is special. The whole table agrees. Both times. I really hoped for redemption and was sad when it fell so very short.

Hi JenniferS. Sorry we haven't matched your standard on each occasion, but happy you got this off your chest. You are the first person to comment on the kitchen lighting in the 6+ years of our operation. Kitchen lighting is critical to deliver the highest quality food and assure the plating is precise, and for employee safety. Restaurants often have open kitchens; Little Jumbo opted to make ours the least obtrusive (curtains) as possible to accentuate its acclaimed darker, cozy environment.

We had the scallops and pork belly. Best pork belly i have ever had. The scallops were good but they gave us inly 2! 2 scallops in an ocean town was very cheap. The
Lingcod was tasty but maybe 4 ounces and it came with asparagus, 2 pieces of asparagus! We liked it better than most restaurants we ate at but disappointed in the pretentiously small portions.

It is a must in our weekend trip and never disappoints!!! I usually give the food 10/10. This time 9/10, as the ceviche was quite bland. Still an over all fantastic experience and I would recommend to anyone
