Warm, cozy prohibition era decor in Victoria's 'Old Town". In 1882 Harry Johnson first published the Bartenders’ Manual/Guide for Hotels and Restaurants. He is still known today for his sagacious writings on service excellence and customer care. He bought the Little Jumbo Saloon in New York from a peer and rival named Jerry Thomas who had founded it in 1866. Because of Thomas’ pioneering work in popularizing cocktails across the United States; he is considered "the father of American mixology”. In addition to writing the seminal work on cocktails, his creativity and showmanship established the image of the bartender as a creative professional. We pay homage to these two and our Little Jumbo emphasizes the fine craft of preparing fresh local food with a focus on continental and contemporary and pairing it with fine wines and the best of classic and modern mixology. A particular emphasis is on creating exceptional customer experience, something very dear to Harry Johnson’s heart.

Awesome evening of food and drinks for my son's birthday. THE BEST hamburger I have had in Victoria bar none and the trifle fries were also extremely tasty. Amazing variety and VERY tasty drinks, some of which I never even thought would go so well together in regards to ingredients. Very nice atmosphere and service was great !! Will definitely go back and have already referred to some friends.

Great food. Part of our party faced an ugly wall while the others enjoyed a better view. A simple painting would help this. Food presentation was elegant while the taste was okay.

Oysters were amazing, drink (old fashioned) amazing.

We had a fantastic evening at Little Jumbo! Our waiter was excellent and knew the drink and food menu inside and out. He was very helpful in choosing drinks, and he was spot on. Our food was perfect in every way. There are so many tourist trap places in Victoria and I am so glad that we found a real gem!

Wife and I came here on a recommendation and weren’t disappointed! Cocktails were great, food was excellent and service was attentive. Less formal atmosphere with very high quality eats and drink

Although the bench seating was terrific the hard wooden chairs left much to be desired. Food delish but I might opt for the bar stools next time. My back was killing me after dinner.

What we had was good. However, we missed hearing the specials and forgot to ask so we ordered from a rather limited menu.

Excellent meal. Creative menu. My only complaint was the bright fluorescent lighting spilling out of the kitchen every time staff entered or exited. It was a jarring contrast to the low-level lighting in the dining room. If they sit you opposite this curtained entry request a different table.

When I made the reservation online I was asked to choose a type of special occasion if we had one. We did. I was our seventh anniversary. After our meal I asked the hostess if there was anything "special" coming our way as I had identified we were there for our anniversary. She said no. I asked why I was asked to provide that (optional) information. The response: "oh, we just ask. Nothing special happens though."

Why ask?

We loved the ambiance as soon as we walked in. We sat at the bar and Bryan was our bartender. He was terrific ! Was really knowledgeable and friendly, and we had a wonderful night. I would highly recommend. It was my favorite place in Victoria.

Great place for a cocktail as the drink menu is impressive. If you are coming for dinner be prepared for a VERY small food menu. This is first and foremost a cocktail bar. Drinks and appies, are great. Not recommended for a meal. Wouldn't likely go back.

Fabulous evening celebrating a birthday. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable. The food and beverages were fantastic. The only disappointment was that oysters were not available due to red tide - but no fault of Little Jumbo. Will definitely return.

The food was definitely not up to standards. Steak was chewy and tough, bearing a very sweet red wine glaze. The squid was oily and very mushy, and the burger had no flavor besides the cheese. Got the gin and tea to drink - pretty good!!

Terrific service. I had a delicious cocktail. Food was less than average. Soggy calamari. Over cooked and mushy pasta (duck confit carbonara). Forgettable burger. Best thing I ate were the French fries. We eat out every day and I was excited to add a restaurant to our weekly go-tos. However, based on the meals we had, I will not return and cannot recommend LJ.

I read many reviews before deciding to book this restaurant during a recent trip to Victoria. Our server, Adi, was outstanding, attentive without being obtrusive. He made suggestions and was very accommodating when I did not enjoy a drink that was ordered. The noise level was loud but it was to be expected especially on a Friday night of a long weekend. I ordered the squash salad and thoroughly enjoyed it. For my entree, the pork belly did not disappoint. However, my colleague ordered the salmon and had to return it because it was cold. The staff was apologetic and quickly brought out another plate but this is one entree that should have been done right, considering we were in British Columbia! It was a small portion and my colleague remarked that he cooked a better salmon than what was presented. I would go back for drinks and appetizers but not sure about dinner.

I feel the music is too loud. Small room, loud music, voices go up and up and up. Also the value for money is slipping. I paid $12 for 5 oz of house wine. Won’t be back soon.

We had excellent service, and the drinks were very good. Food was good, and beautifully presented. We arrived at 7:30 and the ambience was nice -a slight buzz, but not loud. By 8:30, the noise level had become unbearable as the bar hoppers converged and were obviously more than tipsy already. We couldn’t wait to get out, because we had sore throats from yelling across the table at each other. We might have stayed for dessert, otherwise. Too bad a lovely evening ended on a sour note.

Had heard good things about this place but had not previously ever visited but decided to try it while some Vancouver friends were visiting. All four of us were most impressed with the layout, ambience and most particularly the food and service. A winner in our view - can't wait for a return visit!

My husband and I are fast becoming regulars. Each change of the cocktail menu has me claiming a new favourite. The bartenders are also skilled at twists to classic drinks. Menu is delicious and flexible - you can treat the appetizers as tapas quite easily. Seating is comfortable and intimate whether you are at the bar or a table.

We were delighted with Little Jumbo! It was our 33rd Wedding Anniversary and we were seated at one of the cozy booths and offered a glass of champagne in celebration. It was so tasty we ordered more. The food was beautifully presented and deliciously prepared with some unique, seasonal twists...including a marinated squash & bocconcini salad, crispy shallots with grilled asparagus and rhubarb, duck with nettles. Desserts looked yummy, however still having some Sokol Blosser wine to finish the chef was gracious enough to prepare a delectable cheese plate which was not offered on the menu. The staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable.
Too bad we don't live in Victoria full time...though will definitely be back!!!
