About Little Jumbo Restaurant & Bar
Warm, cozy prohibition era decor in Victoria's 'Old Town". In 1882 Harry Johnson first published the Bartenders’ Manual/Guide for Hotels and Restaurants. He is still known today for his sagacious writings on service excellence and customer care. He bought the Little Jumbo Saloon in New York from a peer and rival named Jerry Thomas who had founded it in 1866. Because of Thomas’ pioneering work in popularizing cocktails across the United States; he is considered "the father of American mixology”. In addition to writing the seminal work on cocktails, his creativity and showmanship established the image of the bartender as a creative professional. We pay homage to these two and our Little Jumbo emphasizes the fine craft of preparing fresh local food with a focus on continental and contemporary and pairing it with fine wines and the best of classic and modern mixology. A particular emphasis is on creating exceptional customer experience, something very dear to Harry Johnson’s heart.

Little Jumbo Restaurant & Bar Ratings and Reviews
Great dining experience! Had one of the best bourbon sours ever. The menu is limited and not suitable if you are looking for a variety of salads and soups. The main courses were on the small size but just excellent! Dessert and coffee also great. Wine by the glass are 5 oz portions (smallish) and there was no price for carafes so the bill provided a bit of a surprise when the carafe price was revealed. All and all we thoroughly enjoyed our drinks and meals and would definitely go back.
Looking forward to having the protected bike lane right outside - that will encourage us to come more often!
A hidden treasure! Great service, wonderful food and really cool atmosphere. A must experience in Victoria! Our first time and it will not be our last!
Great restaurant, knowledgeable service, extensive spirits menu. We had a wonderful time!
Amazing vibrant atmosphere we sat at the bar and were well looked after. Everything was great oysters braised salad and chicken foie gras. Definitely will be back.
Hidden behind an anonymous door down a darkened hallway lurks...
... Friendly, interested and knowledgeable staff. Creative cocktails. Fresh local ingredients expertly prepared and presented. Attentive service. We had a great experience.
Outstanding selection of single malts and other spirits in an intimate setting. Excellent service and bartender was very skilled. Beautiful room, good food, just a wee bit pricey. But not so much to keep me away. Recommend reserving. Go and have fun!
We really enjoyed dining at this spot. Server was excellent - made sure we had everything we needed without being intrusive. We shared the lamb shank which was done to perfection - fall off the bone without being dry.
Just love this restaurant, it's got a great ambiance and staff are terrific.
No middle of the road alcohol choices. All expensive. Cheapest 5oz wine was $11.
No salad choices!! Only option was an appetizer of fried brussels sprouts. No shareable appetizer selections. They were all more like side dishes.
Food and drinks we did have were good but was in and out of there in less than an hour, and $80 later.
Hostess didn't even bother to look up to say thanks or goodnight as we were leaving.
Disappointing. Won't be back.
Great food, excellent service, not too pricey. Menu limited. Probably not a place that would accommodate Vegans.
A small intimate hidden treasure in downtown Victoria. Great food menu, a very unique drink menu, a notable wine list and the service is exceptional.
For a special occasion book well in advance.
Quite pleased with the taste of the dishes we ordered. We asked for a bit of bread to accompany the olives but was very disappointed to see that, considering the food prices, they charged us for five tiny pieces , not right.
Wonderful service from start to finish, great vibe and lots of fun!
AMAZING FOOD! WE WENT WITH OUR KIDS AND THEY HAD A GREAT TIME, BUT I RECOMMEND IT MORE ONLY FOR ADULTS
We aren't foodies, but we do love taking the time to find great places around the world. We've had food in 23 countries, and Little Jumbo has to be a top ten experience for us. I can't recall anything better if I'm honest.
I had the lentils and I'm raving. Lentils. The spices and the overall sauce it was cooked in was just second to none. I ordered it because we were supposed to be in Morocco at the time. I wasn't expecting greatness. But at Little Jumbo, everything is just fantastic.
The pricing is really impressive considering what you get. We had two drinks each, two appetizers, two entrees and a dessert. I left in pain because I couldn't stop eating. But the wallet took a moderate punch given everything we had. It was $140. For this type of feast at this quality, coming in under $200 is really quite impressive. We easily could have enjoyed ourselves for under $100.
Thank you for the experience. I was fantastic. We'll be back. Even given having to ferry or fly in and stay overnight, you won't be able to keep us away.
It was very nice. Ate from the appetizer menu and had a couple of very expensive cocktails. All tasty.
Food was delicious but the two desserts we tried were disappointing .
Simply delightful little nook of a place tucked at the back of a passageway. Unless you know it's there you won't see it.
Little Jumbo is a long narrow space with seating on one side and bar and kitchen on the other. Very intimate.
Definitely get a cocktail. I would say a speciality of the house.
Food was wonderful. Portion sizes were just right. Deserts disappeared. Go with confidence.
Absolutely outstanding food!! We shared braised greens salad, warm olives, the lamb shank and the chicken breast....perfection! I also had the Witch in the Woods cocktail...unlike anything else...refreshing and complex. I will DEFINITELY be returning here, I would rather have 1 great meal here than a month of takeout.
Regarding ambiance, the warm lighting and bricks makes it very cozy, lovely for a romantic night. Service was on point, with very good suggestions and lots of knowledge. I highly recommend it!
I love little jumbo. I will go to Victoria just to visit little jumbo.
A STAPLE IN OUR RESTAURANT CHOICES. GOOD JOB LITTLE JUMBO! COZY, FUN, SEXY AND TASTY
The cocktails were excellent as were all our meals except the halibut. The sides were very tasty but the fish was overdone. Would still recommend the restaurant!
Excellent food. Everything tasted great! Server was friendly
Fantastic food, cocktails, and service. I asked our server to recommend a cocktail to compliment my bacon wrapped rabbit loin and rabbit leg confit entrée, and they nailed it! Very pricy food and beverage menu but well worth the money for a special occasion. One of the best dining experiences I've ever had; we just can't afford to do it more than a couple times a year!
Service was not as good as food. I highly recommend to be more careful about that.
The food was excellent, as was the service. I think they are little over-priced and their wine prices are way too high. In any case, it was a good experience and I would recommend it to others, with the proviso that it's going to cost above the average.
Took wife for her birthday, and wasn't disappointed in any category
Love the atmosphere , and food was amazing and ofcourse the waiter 😊
One of our best experiences in Victoria BC. Would highly recommend to locals and out of town guest.
We were sat it a great seat. Food was great, almost as good as the date. Service was on point, informative, and it was in the the background, which is what you want when you're there for someone else.
We dined here two out of our three nights in Victoria because we had such a fantastic experience the first night. We sat at the bar both nights and watched the bartenders work their magic. It was truly a show of artistry and fun. The food is fantastic too!
Had tonight's special - pork chop with roasted turnips and espresso au jus along with truffle frites to start. Food was fantastic and the cocktails were creative and even better than the food. But the service was only okay... not really up to par with the upscale ambiance.
The bar is on point. Feels like a little-known local spot. Olives to start was a perfect decision. Salmon and gnocchi were well played and delicious. Can't go wrong here.
Birthday was fun and good was great
Little Jumbo is unique and a first class experience. Compared to other alternatives in Victoria, it is a relative bargain. Food and wine menus are somewhat limited, but diverse, and all dishes cooked superlatively. Maybe consider bringing your own wine, corkage fee is $25.
Noise level is loud, the the canned music doesn't help. But LJ still rates up in the top of Victoria.
We are wondering if there was an issue with a staff turn over or change of season or something because, the service, although professional and good quality, was sporadic and lacking attentiveness. They ran out of one of the specials by 7:30pm, and the mood was generally chaotic and disorganized around us.
We were set to have a lovely night, looking forward to having a meal here and we were chatty and engaged with each other, but we felt ignored and distracted by the fact that our order took so long. Our glasses were empty most of the night, and the tables around us were served first despite arriving after us. Our server didn't inquire if we wanted wine with dinner until we had already been served our meal and had been sitting without drinks for well over 30 min. It took 45 min for our appetizer and another 75 min for our meals to arrive.
The food... the food was extraordinary and a delight. We had both of the specials fish cakes and scallops, and another entre from the menu, all of which were perfectly balanced and well seasoned. We both felt there may have been a salt overkill, but certainly not a lack of flavor.
The pear baklava dessert was beautiful in presentation and had some really nice elements, but it was a bit too deconstructed to get the effect of each of the flavors and textures balanced in every bite.
Overall, the atmosphere and the food made us want to come back and try this place again, I hope next time the issues causing the distractions will be resolved and we will seamlessly be able to enjoy the company without wondering what on Earth is going on most of the time.
We had an incredible experience at Little Jumbo! All the food and cocktails we enjoyed during dinner were phenomenal! A must visit.
Had heard good things about this place so decided to take my dad when he came to town. It was as good as people claimed! Great drinks, good food, good vibe... I'd definitely come back.
FABULOUS! Bartenders are very entertaining and service excellent.
Not a big space, so a lot of energy in the room.
