*Please note that tables will turn on busy evenings...
We hope to see you soon.
We came here for my Birthday on a Tuesday and again they did a wonderful job. The restaurant was busy but not too loud. Food is well prepared and delicious the owner Michael and his staff are very friendly and informative. We will never have enough of this restaurant. Thank you for making our night so special.
Little gem on a pretty block with friendly staff and great food
Fabulous place to celebrate our anniversary. Lovely cozy Quebec country atmosphere. Superb food, service, and wine.
Great food and staff, the owner Micheal is very informative and friendly.sit at the bar you’ll have a blast!
We’ll definitely be back!!
Amazing wait staff. Nice lads and very informative. The whole experience was great!
Noisy, no bread, vines too expensives, service not very kind
It’s a great place with an interesting menu. However, the service is a bit slow (except to refill the water). In terms of food, the quality is there...but my wife and I felt that each plate was missing a little something to be a “wow”. Also, a some of items on the menu were not available.
We recommend the restaurant without hesitation. If you go there without preconceived expectations, you will be very satisfied!
We had high hopes for L'Orignal when we booked a table. New Canadian cuisine can be hit-or-miss, but the reviews and the photos looked solid. We were sorely disappointed.
Starting with the wine menu, we were shocked that a new Canadian restaurant would offer so little domestic wine variety (we counted 3 wines from across Canada, if I recall).
Things went downhill with a chicken-liver paté tart to start. Tart shell was overworked and overbaked, presenting a dense crunchy contrast with the paté. Paté itself would have been okay except for an over-enthusiastic coating of capers.
Next course was duck with carrots three ways and a red wine sauce, my partner had the bison burger with fries. Duck itself was well-prepared, but the dish overall felt flat in terms of flavour (carrots were sweet, duck was sweet, red wine sauce was sweet) and the portion was quite small. Bison burger was better in general, but fries were underdone and burger was over-salted (although portion was significantly better).
Service was variable. After receiving our mains, three separate servers asked us how things were tasting, but we were then left waiting for ~30 minutes at the end of our meal for the bill (understandable if the restaurant had been buzzing, but it was a very quiet evening overall). Altogether, the meal with wine cost ~$200 for 2 mains, 1 appetizer, and a bottle of wine at the cheap end of their spectrum, which given the quality was probably $100 too much in my opinion.
Waitress very nice but order wrong dish to kitchen
Menu very restricted
We had been to this restaurant in the past and although the food was good we had higher expectations of the menu
Great porch chop and great steak and frites
Great staff. Killer drinks. I only wish the rest of my group was up for the tasting menu
Mike and the team killed it once again! Love the food and wine recommendations!
Poor service, low value for money, not so many plates available. Nice location
The flank steak was very tough
Service was slow, food was bland or cold. Overall a poor experience in dining for our first night in Montreal. While were never going back to L’Original we’re not giving up on Montreal!
This place is a gem. Service was quick and friendly without being intrusive. Food is amazing!! Would go back here again when I come back to Montreal.
very poor service, our waitress did not do anything we asked, and we were there at 6.45PM, so it was very quiet then, my rabbit was lukewarm - wine was very expensive, we were not offered the wine pairing like the table near us was - different waitress, main dish had just carrots, nothing else, so for the $$ it was nice but dint expect much more. The best person was a young man with glasses who filled the water, every time I asked him for anything it was done.
The service was friendly but the flow wasn’t steady. I’d work on upscaling the menu with more terroir based dishes and its execution.
Tha ambience is cozy & relaxed, the eclectic playlist & volume of musice perfectly conducive to conversation. Staff were friendly, personable, and attentive without being over-bearing. We shared the house salad which was a generous portion & lightly dressed. The halibut was creative & flavorful too. I would’ve given 5 stars had my entree been hotter. It was barely warm. Regardless, there are enough 5 star reasons to recommend this place!
We had dinner at the L'Orginal while on vacation. The food was good but rather small portions for the price of the entrées with the exception of the bison burger which was really large. Service was slow and the restaurant was not busy since it was a Monday evening. The sound track was great-just the right volume and the décor was nice as well.
$100 seafood platter is not worth it in my opinion. Also after placing a call ahead of time to confirm, the menu and environment is not kid friendly. No booster chairs, and only thing on menu for a 2yr old to eat would be fries.
Food and service was very good. Poached halibut with vegetables was delicious. Quite dark in the restaurant. We sat by the bar. Overall good dinner.
Amazing experience! We were adventurous and ordered the 6 course chef’s tasting menu. We were not told what the chef would prepare in advance. Each dish was a surprise and cooked to perfection! We had a wonderful time and diners nearby watched in amazement as each of our beautiful courses arrived. Very memorable and fun evening. Highly recommend!
Everything was lovely. The roasted quail, lamb loin special and duck breast were exquisite. Will definitely come back!
Very FRESH and unique. delicious baked oysters, and creative scallop - corn puree soup. summer root vegetables wonderful. perfectly poached halibut. wonderful food - truly captures 'farm to table' french&canadian cuisine mix.
We were intrigued by the Quebecois farm to table style, and a picture of a wall decorated with slices of wood.
The halibut, served with almonds, mushrooms radishes and sprouts, was a revelation. The sauce of mustard maple and lemon simply blew my mind. A real feast for the senses.
Like many old buildings in Montreal, it is tricky to access, through a low door and down a steep stair. But the restaurant more than rewards the effort.
Too overpriced and the food wasn’t even good, or warm...
All was good - the food, people working and the ambiance was excellent. We were the last to leave and it was 30 minutes past their normal closing hours, and we never felt they were concerned with getting rid of us. They are a very nice team who own/run L'original. It's a great place to go.
All aspects for the entire evening were superior
Cant wait to return
My wife and I went to L'Orignal for our 35th wedding anniversary supper and we were not disappointed.
the meal and service was beyond terrific. an extremely talented chef with a clear vision of his food. great plate presentation and out of this world flavours.
do not miss a chance to experience this restaurant !!!!
The food was OK, but not exceptional. The place is dark and underground which is unfortunate on a sunny summer day.
Ordered bone marrow and was a joke. 2 bites, average flavor. Steak tenderloin was extremely average. Flavors are not matching price point. A very good meal, but nothing about this place has me anticipating a return.
This is our fourth time at L'Orignal. Every time is better than the one before it. The food is wonderful and the service is absolutely unmatched!
Excellent restaurant: excellent food and service. Not too loud. Perfect meal with colleagues.
What a wonderful place! The atmosphere was so perfect. The food was delicious and staff was friendless.
Definitely a place I want to eat again when I visit Montreal!
Thank you for the nice evening!
A wonderful restaurant with fantastic food and a gracious staff! Able to easily handle gluten intolerance! Wonderful bar and wine list! Not to be missed!
Fun place with lots of interesting décor. I had the walleye which was absolutely fabulous - my favorite fish! My husband had a delicious bison burger with their truffle poutine - wow! The restaurant was relatively quiet and on a Tuesday night, not crowded. But we were seated next to a large, somewhat noisy group - would have been better to sit elsewhere, though we did not complain or ask. Still, we thoroughly enjoyed the restaurant.
Dined with friends during a Montreal vacation. The food was excellent and the experience was unique. Loved the decor-sort of “North woods meets fine dining “ we had many wonderful meals in Montreal’s excellent restaurants, but this was a special experience.
