Mabel Gray Ratings and Reviews
We had been trying for months to get into Mable Gray and by chance we were able to get in this past Thursday. I think they must have had a cancellation. We thoroughly enjoyed our entire experience here. Our reservation was at 5pm and we arrived a bit early. They actually don't open until 5pm but we were let in at about 4:55pm. We were greated enthusiastically and shown to our table. Mabel Gray is small. It seats about 30 and another 13 or so at the bar. I think it was originally a Coney Island. We loved the decor, very eclectic and hip. The dishes do not match and I believe that's by design. As soon as we were seated we were served water in a Lillet Bottle which was left on our table which we appreciated. I hate having to continually ask for water in a restaurant. I don't remember us having to pour another glass though, the waiter was super attentive and they were packed. Our waiter's name was Brock and I can't say enough about his style. He was professional, friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the menu and food options. Both my husband and I opted for the Tasting Menu and drink pairing and are we glad we did. Every dish was fantastic. The flavors, textures and presentation were truly remarkable. The tasting menu consists of 8 courses and 8 drink pairings. I won't go into every course, but we had seared tuna, flash fried octupus, roasted beet salad, a delicious soup with a whey base, a shrimp dumpling in broth, and bison so tender it melted in your mouth. Just prior to the bison we had sorbet to cleanse our palate. Finally we had a lemon tart for dessert. We will definitely go back.
Our server, Justin, was very knowledgeable about the food and chef . There also was a great wit about him. Fun experience.
I love Mabel Gray. I am a picky eater, but when it's from Chef James Rigato, I eat it all. Anything I've had there is the best I've ever had. I definitely recommend the tasting menu. Paul makes amazing cocktails too. We love to just go and sit at the bar and enjoy the night. Thank you for a wonderful birthday dinner!
This was my first time at Mabel Gray. After hearing so many phenomenal reviews, I wanted to see it for myself. Our party got the eight course tasting menu. It was spectacular. Our waiter Spencer was highly attentive and new all the ingredients to everything presented to us. Looking forward to going back soon!
Once again, the tasting menu did not disappoint! I always leave having tried foods I would normally turn my nose up at the mere thought of (wait - I’m ok with sweetbreads now?)
This is my favorite restaurant. The food is always excellent, with creative pairings of flavors in every dish. I also love the atmosphere, very relaxed and friendly. The waiters are knowledgeable, and they were able to accommodate my egg allergy. I will definitely be back!
I would consider this a very nice representation of hipster meets fine dining. The farm to table and eclectic atmosphere features great service (Justin though whoever Paul is be careful) and of course antlers on the wall! The food was phenomenal my husband and I waited a whole month though we had been discussing this place for a year and finally for my husbands 30th we went to Mable Gray and were not disappointed. The tasting menu with the drink pairing was tasty. The tasting menu goes thru 8 different courses and 7 wines...We started with a dumpling in an amazing chicken broth with garlic and green onions paired with a champagne-like wine.2nd course was a salad with a honey blood orange vinagarette with pastachios with a rose’. 3rd course was a cauliflower soup with ham it would make any vegetable-hater rethink their life. 4th course was a bison pierogi that made me realize we were is hazel park so close to hamtramack...polish town with a good Flemish style beer the best pairing of the evening....Mmmmm pierogis...5th course was flash fried octopus with kimchi it was a little salty for my husband but I loved it with the buttermilk...6th was a pallet cleanser kinda like shaved ice with so much delicious fruit flavor. 7th was the entire some bison medallions with pesto pinenuts and mushrooms, so good. 8th and final was dessert a coconut cake with some caramel and dark chocolate mousse and coconut cream and an apple paratiffe... They made sure we always had water and even folded...yes folded our napkins every time we got up and went to the bathroom(which there are some risky photos that had to be pointed out by my husband) . All in all a very good foodie experience with a new mystery every time you go. I am looking forward to going again and trying a whole new menu!
Food choices and presentation excellent. Service very good. Tight seating.
Always one of my favorite places for dinner. Chef is so creative, it's different but wonderful each time. And they are willing to work with me on my food allergies so I can still enjoy the tasting menu!
We went there for my birthday and it was amazing!!! The tasting menu with paired wines was beyond my highest expectations!
Really a wonderful dining experience. While complex, the ingredients in each dish did not compete. Really enjoyed the tasting menu. Excellent service.
Lucky to get a same day reservation. Best baked oysters I’ve ever had. Best perogie with homemade ricotta. Chicken was especially tasty. My coworker and I shared all the dishes. Our server, Brock, made suggestions, was prompt and knowedable as well as friendly. All the staff seemed to really enjoy what they were doing. I travel for work and get burnt out on the plentiful bar food that’s available. Mabel grey was the opposite...fresh, incredibly flavorful and inventive. Thanks for a fantastic “on the road” dining experience.
Food was great and so was the service. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the food and drinks,we will be back.
This was our first time to Mabel Gray. The service was impeccable. I was very impressed by everyone's helpfulness. The atmosphere was suitable. It was not the quiet sit-down meal I was imagining, but the room was interesting. We ordered the honey crisp apple salad, the pierogies, and the fried half chicken. I would not recommend the pierogies, but the salad and the chicken were wonderful! We plan to go again soon.
Easily our favorite restaurant in the Detroit area. The most unique dining setting there is and the service is superb. I cannot wait until our next visit!
The tasting menu was amazing! This photo is of the apple and endive salad. So many flavors to make it unique. We also had an incredible mushroom carpaccio, spicy mussels in a broth, but the favorite dish by far was the octopus! So surprising that everyone who was afraid to even try it, loved it! Very creative chef to pair so many unusual ingredients into such delicious and memorable dishes.
Lovely restaurant and wonderful food! Very knowledgeable waiter. I can’t wait to go back!
Loved everything!!! Service was stellar...we ordered the 'tasting menu' - it was excellent! We will return
The tasting menu was a lot of fun! A little scary not knowing what was coming, but everything was amazing.
It was just amazing, I am glad we were able to try it. Has to be one of the best dining experiences in Metro Detroit!
Absolutely amazing!!! We did the tasting menu and it was fabulous. Made another dining reservation while we were still dining to come back with another couple. Our waiter, Justin was fantastic, attentive and super funny. The staff was great. The food was phenomenal. James Rigato is a culinary genius! Everyone must try Mabel Gray!
This place is perfection. We enjoyed the tasting menu with the wine pairing.
Everyone needs to experience this place at least once. The food is creative and absolutely phenomenal! It's a fantastic dining experience. You will not be disappointed!
Fantastic! Always a culinary journey at Mabel Gray!
The tasting menu is the way to eat at this restaurant or you will miss out. A Mazing food and service.
The first three courses were delicious. The oysters were good, I prefer raw though. The brussel sprouts were excellent! As was the tuna, however it was TINY, three small shavings of tuna. The last dish we had, the pork bolognese, was terrible. The noodles were undercooked, and no, they were not al dente, the pork was mealy, and overall a very underwhelming end to what had been a good experience to that point. I wouldn't recommend going or not going, there are some positives and some negatives, it did not live up to the hype.
This was a very disappointing experience. The restaurant is overpriced and low on delicious food. My so-called 60-day aged beef was flavorless and the mashed potatoes that came with it were grainy. The desert cake was dry and flavorless. The restaurant itself is a mess. The menu is handwritten and can’t be read. Although I told them it was my wife’s birthday, they never mentioned it. James Rigato is ‘phoning it in’ on this one.
Amazing food and drinks!! Friendly and knowledgeable staff. The tasting menu was superb and highly recommended. Good times!!
The food is soooo delicious. We love doing the tasting and the beverage pairing. It is an experience! Waitstaff is amazing...knowledgeable, friendly, well-traveled and serious foodies just like us! We are addicted. We keep booking every 4-6 weeks and look forward to it every time!
Of all the places in the world I've ate. This is hands down my favorite.
My wife and I did the tasting and wine pairing. The meal was one of the best I ever had and the pairing of the wine couldn’t have been better. The manager, Lindsay, was friendly and took very good care of us. A chef even came out and talked to us about one of the dishes that we enjoyed. Next thing you know, she hands us the recipe for it. Great service, food and drinks. Would recommend it to anyone. Unbelievable experience.
Absolutely wonderful! Great food, drinks, ambiance, and service. The attention to detail and service were above and beyond.
Not the ambiance I was expecting given the website refinement, however I've found it's in a very Detroit spirit to mix casual decor/dress code with world-class quality expertise in dining, the workplace, theater and elsewhere. Our waiter (Brenton, if I caught his name correctly) was flawless, as were the other staff that visited. The meal was paced perfectly and each dish and wine was delicious. The scallops, poached pear salad, venison, and tuna tartare were sublime. There was no pretentiousness about the place, with a bustling galley kitchen, happy patrons lounging at the bar, and close-knit dining tables. We will absolutely be back, thank you for a wonderful experience!
Loved the option of the tasting menu. Great service. Everyone is very friendly. The food choices were amazing. Will definitely be back. Thank you!
Such an incredible and memorable experience! The food and wine pairing menu is a must do
The food is excellent. Really creative and impressive how the menu changes daily. It's fun being able to see the prep going on. The place is very small. Close quarters for dining and a bit loud. But the food is worth it and the prices are good for the quality.
Yum. That’s about all you need to know. Food was outstanding. Service was impeccable. Do the tasters menu to get a full run of the menu - good enough for 2. Michigan lamb chop with a beef empanada on mole and salsa verde; poached pears and American prosciutto and a smore’s tart amongst the fantastic dishes we had. Will be back.
The food was simply superb! It was a big day, as my family was meeting my girlfriend for the first time. Everything was perfect! Everyone enjoyed themselves! The meal was one of the best I've ever had and I cannot wait to go back!
Amazing food, great service, hard to get a seat but well worth the effort. Will be here again and again!
Referred by my foodie friends. Did not disappoint. Table ready on arrival, Great service, cool
tasting menu. Every coarse on point and made with attentive precision. If I was trying to find something to nitpick, menu was a little hard to read. Low light and written in hard font. Will definitely return!!
